GILLY FLAHERTY
Good morning and welcome to the Chigwell Construction
Stadium for today’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League match
between West Ham United and Manchester City.
e’re looking to get back to our usual
performance levels today after our
Wdisappointing defeat to Brighton & Hove
Albion last time out.
It was one of those matches where we really didn’t
start well, something that hasn’t happened too
much at home this season.
It was a third home defeat of the season, and
we as a team have been really proud of the record
that we’ve had here this year, but again, we’re
disappointed to lose a game that we feel as though
we could have won, had we been more clinical and
not made the individual errors that we did.
We need to show a reaction here today, because
we know that we weren’t at our best in the previous
game.
On a more positive note, it was great to see players
from our Sister Club, Nutmeg East London, at the
game last weekend. It’s great that we are able to
inspire the younger generations as the exposure
our game is receiving continues to grow. They were
certainly very loud and it was great to be able to
pose with their flag at full-time.
I have such fond memories of our win against
Manchester City earlier in the season. We defended
for our lives that day and executed the game plan
to perfection – taking our opportunities and being
clinical when the chances came our way.
To get a clean sheet at the Academy Stadium is
something very few teams manage, and we did
that back in October – and it’s something that, as a
defender, you relish.
So, we know that as a team we’re capable of
getting a result, and that has to be our aim again this
afternoon.
The season has certainly flown by quickly, and
I can’t believe that we only have three league
matches remaining after today. I think that all of our
players and staff can be immensely proud of what
we have achieved so far but at the same time, we
need to make sure that we finish the season strongly
and end on a high.
We know that it won’t be an easy task with some
tough fixtures coming up, including today’s – but
we have the quality within our ranks to finish
strongly if we give everything.
Thank you again for your support this season, it
has been superb. We hope that you will continue to
push us on in our remaining matches!
COME ON YOU IRONS!
OLLI HARDER
Good morning and welcome to the Chigwell Construction
Stadium for today’s Barclays FA Women’s Super League clash
between West Ham United and Manchester City.
W
e come into this match looking to bounce back
after a poor performance and result against
Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend.
Prior to last Sunday’s match, our home record this
season had been magnificent, with our only defeats
in Dagenham coming at the hands of the reigning
Barclays FA WSL champions, Chelsea.
The loss to Brighton was an uncharacteristic
performance from our team and we conceded two
immensely disappointing goals. Ultimately, those goals
were down to individual errors, something we have
thankfully not made many of throughout the campaign
so far.
On a positive note, we were able to find some good
spaces and created a number of goalscoring chances.
However, to not take those meaningful opportunities
was frustrating and left us without points in a game we
felt confident of winning prior to kick-off.
Of course, these things happen in football, and that’s
what makes the sport so exciting. But the onus is now
on us to make sure such errors and the subsequent
results do not become a regular occurrence.
Today we face a different sort of challenge, and with
that in mind, I’d like to welcome Gareth Taylor, his staff
and players for today’s match.
We know that Manchester City will look to control
the play, so we have to be disciplined in our approach
and look to maximise our opportunities when they
arrive.
We’ve already proven this season that we can get a
result against them – when we went to the Academy
Stadium and won 2-0 back in October. I know that
if we play in a similar vein to how we did on that
memorable afternoon, then we have a very good
chance of getting a positive result again.
I’ve said previously about the progress we have made
as a team when we go up against opposition like this,
and today is another chance to really back up that
claim by putting in a good performance.
Once again, your support has been invaluable this
season, and I really hope you can get behind the team
today.
We’re hurtling towards the end of the season, and
we want to finish in the strongest possible way – and
your fantastic support will certainly help us in that
endeavour.
Come On You Irons!
HAMMERS BESTED BY
BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION
West Ham United were beaten
for only the second time
at home this season in the
Barclays FA Women’s Super
League as Brighton & Hove
Albion ran out 2-0 winners.
An early goal from Aileen
Whelan put the away
side ahead, and despite a
strong resurgence from the
Irons, Inessa Kaagman’s
late goal after a mistake at
the back sealed all three
points for the Seagulls.
It was a nightmare start
for the Hammers in east
London, as Whelan found
space on the edge of the area
westhamwomen
and placed the ball beyond
Mackenzie Arnold with only
two minutes on the clock.
And the pressure continued
from the away side, as
Kaagman was afforded
time on the edge of the
box, but the final ball from
the Seagulls was cleared
away by Grace Fisk.
It took Olli Harder’s side 20
minutes to create their first
real opening. A bobbling ball
fell through into the path of
Dagný Brynjarsdóttir, but her
effort on goal was blocked
superbly by Danique Kirkdijk.
The follow-up attempts
from Kate Longhurst flew
well over the crossbar.
Things improved for the
home side as they started to
look after the ball a little bit
better than they had done
in the opening stages. A
wonderful cross-field ball
from Yui Hasegawa set up the
chance for Tameka Yallop to
fire a ball into the area, but
the cross was well claimed
by Katie Startup – who was
making her competitive
debut for Brighton.
Another fantastic ball,
this time from Abbey-Leigh
Stringer, found Kateřina

11
Svitková with room to run
in behind. Her ball across
found Yallop, who forced
Startup into a good save.
In the second half, it was
Danielle Carter who was
looking lively, forcing Arnold
into another smart save
down to her left-hand side.
And Brighton continued
to cause problems, and
almost had their second
of the game when Megan
Connolly smashed an effort
off the crossbar after some
poor play at the back.
The game turned
transitional, with both sides
looking to get onto the front
foot at any opportunity.
Longhurst stood up a lovely
ball for Brynjarsdóttir to
attack, but Startup was
able to push the Icelandic
midfielder’s header behind.
But it would be a mistake
at the back that would undo
all of the hard work that West
Ham had put in to try and
get back into the game.
A loose back-pass from
Hawa Cissoko caused
confusion at the back, causing
Arnold and Grace Fisk to go
for the same ball - with it
eventually falling to Kaagman,
who slotted into an empty net.
And that would be one of
the final attacking moments
in the game, as the Hammers
slipped to defeat.
REACTION
West Ham United manager Olli Harder:
“We’re really disappointed to not
come away with anything today.
“We gave away two sloppy goals,
and it’s those individual errors
that have let us down today.
“To be put on the backfoot almost
immediately meant that it took
us a little while to get going, and
in the end it wasn’t enough.
“We found some good spaces and
created some good chances, meaningful
opportunities that we didn’t take.
“We had a hold of the game
for long periods, but we
couldn’t capitalise on that.
“The second goal is a catalogue of
errors and it’s really disappointing that
we couldn’t get back into the game.”
Midfielder Dagný Brynjarsdóttir:
“It was a disappointing game
for us today. We didn’t play to
our usual standard, and we didn’t
come out on the front foot.
“I think for the majority of the
match, we were the team that was
in control, but we were not sharp
enough at both ends of the field.
“I think the games against
Manchester City will be a bit different
to the one we’ve played today.
They’re going to have a lot more
of the ball and we’re going to have
to defend very well as a group.
“We won’t get many chances
because of how good they usually
are defensively, so we need to make
sure we take those chances when we
get them and cut out the mistakes
that we’ve made as a team today.”
TAKING
THE LEAP
WORDS: GEORGE BENSON
Anna Leat has her whole career
ahead of her. The promising young
goalkeeper arrived in east London this
summer from her native New Zealand -
taking the leap into professional football
for the first time.
westhamwomen

WHUW v Manchester City
westhamwomen

Previously, Leat has played for East
Coast Bays, and at Georgetown
University in Washington DC - but
it’s here at West Ham United that
the next chapter of the 20-yearold’s
story is being written.
Life on the sidelines for a
goalkeeper can be tough, but the
Arrowtown native has embraced her
role within the team – cheering her
team-mates and fellow goalkeepe
Mackenzie Arnold through matches
on the touchline, offering words
of encouragement when she isn’t
between the sticks herself.
Leat has had her fair share of
opportunities to shine, making
nine appearances so far this term,
keeping five clean sheets in the
process in wins – including a 100
per cent clean sheet record in the
Continental Tyres League Cup
group stage.
Included in those nine matches
are four matches in the Barclays
FA Women’s Super League, where
Leat stepped in during the month
of January, whilst Arnold was away
at the 2020 AFC Women’s Asian
Cup with Australia.
And the ‘keeper knows that her
journey in the professional game
is just beginning and is relishing
more opportunities to show what
she can do.
The 20-year-old spoke to the
Official Programme about her time
in England to date, some of her
favourite moments and shares an
insight into some of her interests…
What would you say your first
season in English football has been
like?
It’s been cool! It’s been a big, big
life changer for me. January 2022
was a huge opportunity and a great
stepping stone as I made my WSL
debut and had a month of being in
the starting line-up.
It’s been a rollercoaster ride, and
it’s been one that I’ve ridden with
the team the whole way. I think the
beauty of the league here is that it’s
such a journey, and it has such a
culture to it as well.
Speaking of culture, how have you
found adapting to a new one here
in England?
It has been very challenging.
I think any big move like that is
going to come with its ups and
downs and it’s important to have
the mindset to be able to get
through that, and to have a longerterm
vision in mind is key.
But I have to say, everyone
here at West Ham has been really
supportive, as they are with all of
the players that make the move to
London.
Being in a great goalkeeping unit
here at West Ham has also helped.
We all have good relationships
with each other; Mackenzie, Billy
Stewart, our goalkeeping coach,
and I, really get on well.
You also live in a house with three
other players, that must be great?
Oh, it’s great craic, Abbey
[Stringer], Claudia [Walker] and Zee
[Zaneta Wyne] are all great! They’ve
looked after me, helped me to
adjust to a new lifestyle and they’ve
been very important to me. I won’t
be forgetting the way that they
helped me out and welcomed me
for a very long time.
Let’s talk a little bit more about
your spell between the sticks in
January…
It was great to get those minutes
and it was an insight for me into
what I’m working towards. It
showed me the possibilities that
there are for me in this league,
which will hopefully be coming
soon. Being able to go through
that month of consistent starts
really opened my eyes.
Looking back now, January was
so valuable for me. It’s also about
being a good teammate from the
side-lines though, and I think that’s
one of the most important things
to remember when you’re in a
team environment.
When you’re not out there on the
pitch yourself, you’ve got to just
remember what’s important and be
westhamwomen
15

WHUW v Manchester City
westhamwomen

supportive from the bench. I think
that’s probably the biggest takeaway
for me this year.
17
Away from the pitch, you’re very
much a musically inclined person,
aren’t you?
Yeah, I play guitar! Olli [Harder]
and I love to have our musical jams
on away trips, because he’s big into
it as well. It’s just something that
I love to do. I performed for my
West Ham initiation and I’m one of
those people who can’t do things
by half, so I had the idea and just
went for it. I played a medley of
‘Fergalicious’ and Fergie’s ‘Big Girls
Don’t Cry’!
There’s definitely footage of that
on someone’s phone somewhere,
but I’m hoping it doesn’t see the
light of day anytime soon!
Your dad has had a big influence
on you, even coming to visit this
season to cheer you on!
My Dad’s my best mate! We just
get along so well. It was really cool
to have him in England in January
and February this year and so he
got to be here for my WSL debut
and see me start for the team, so
those months for me were really
special.
We also found out that we had
family land over here and he was
born just around the corner from
here - it’s quite crazy how it’s all
come together. I’ll never forget the
moment after the Tottenham game
when Kate (Longhurst) scored the
last-minute equaliser. I went over
to him after the game and he was
absolutely beaming!
Staying with things off the pitch,
you’ve also been raising awareness
for mental health with the Mind
‘27/27’ challenge…
Yeah, I’ve just finished running
27 miles in 27 days for Mind. For
the first part I was running and
then I switched it up and moved
to cycling. It was just a really cool
thing to commit to for a month.
It’s a cause that’s very important
and really close to home for me. I
saw the opportunity pop up and I
just thought why not try it out? It’s
been good for me, and hopefully
people have seen the journey and
got something out of it too.
It was something that my
housemates got involved with
too and that was super special. It
ended up being something that
everyone in the house helped me
with, and we were all going out
for our evening bike rides. They
all supported and got behind the
cause as well, which is what the
challenge is all about, and so that
was really great to see.
The team have hit a record
number of points in the WSL and
reached the FA Cup semi-finals - is
it pleasing for you to have been
able to contribute to the team’s
progress this year?
Yeah, it’s been really pleasing, and
obviously the season still isn’t over
yet! This team has such a great
culture and a great energy about it,
and so I’d say that we were bound
to do well this season and to make
history with the Club is super cool.
We all know that we have more
in the tank as well which is very
exciting for the end of the season.
Hopefully we can pick up a couple
of positive results between now
and the end of the campaign.
How would you reflect on
the season as a whole for you
personally?
It’s been a huge learning curve
and I think that I’m in a very
different headspace now to what
I was when I came here. It’s good
for me to have a year under the
belt of hard graft and to be able
to soak everything in, in terms of
getting to know the league, the
team, the players, the coaches, and
professional football in general. I
think coming here was a real foot
in the door and I’m excited to see
what’s on the other side.
ONES TO WATCH
Lauren Hemp:
At just 21 years of age, it feels as
though Hemp has been around
for a lot longer. The flying winger
joined City from Bristol City in
2018 and has gone on to make
56 league appearances for the
club, scoring 19 goals in the
process. Hemp is a regular with
England too, scoring her first of
four England goals in a 20-0 win
over Latvia in November 2021,
the national record for the largest
victory in a senior international
football match. Hemp has six goals
in the WSL this season.
Ellen White
A West Ham United fan,
Ellen White has been
performing at the top
level for almost two
decades now. Having
played for the likes of
Chelsea, Arsenal, Notts
County, Birmingham City
and now Manchester
City, she has bags of
experience and certainly
knows where the back of
Georgia Stanway
Stanway has been with
Manchester City since
2015 and has made 91
league appearances
for the club. At only 23,
Stanway is a key cog in
the City machine, capable
of performing in a variety
of positions, but excelling
further forward. Stanway
has five goals this season
in the WSL.

THE WSB
OVER THE COURSE
OF THE SEASON, WE
WILL BE FEATURING
DIFFERENT MEMBERS
OF THE WOMEN’S
SUPPORTERS BOARD
(WSB). THIS WEEK IS
THE TURN OF ALLIE
COKER, THE AWAY
REPRESENTATIVE
FOR THE WSB.
Allie with midfielder, Kate Longhurst
Allie, tell us a little bit about yourself… Well, I’m a born and
bred West Ham United fan – and the fault lies squarely at
my mother’s feet! Despite living 220 miles from home, I still
manage to get to almost all of our matches and you could
say I’m an enthusiast of M6 service stations because of it.
How long have you been a fan of West Ham United
Women? I have been a fan of the women’s team since they
turned professional in 2018. I can remember the first game
at Boreham Wood in the Continental Tyres League Cup
where Brianna Visalli scored our first professional goal.
What’s the best memory you have from a West Ham
Women’s game? For me, it has to be the roar when
Cho’s penalty at Reading in the FA Cup semi-final hit
the back of the net. The whole day was just superb from
start to finish. The togetherness from the fans driving the
team on, and then being able to celebrate that joyous
moment with all of the players, it was wonderful.
Allie with members of the WSB at an away match
activities of the Women’s
Supporters Board? Well, they
now have their very own Twitter
account which you can follow!
Twitter Handle: @whuwsb
Why did you decide to join the WSB? I really want
to help this football club to grow, and I think every
supporter has a part to play in that. I know that West
Ham United fans are the most passionate in the game.
I want to spread the passion that you see at our home
matches to our travelling support so that we can
really push the team on in those tough away trips.
What do you hope to achieve from being on the WSB?
For me, my main goal is to get as many people following
the team away from home as possible. As I said, we really
want our team to have a good backing when we travel
away, because we know that it can make a big difference
in matches. West Ham has some of the best supporters in
the world, and we want that to filter down to the women’s
team’ to ‘and we want to see them at women’s games!
Have any other questions for Allie? You can find
her at the WSB stand, which is located by the
NCS SUMMER ’22:
BOOK YOUR PLACE
T
he NCS summer programme
delivered by West Ham
United Foundation is open
for registration.
Spaces are quickly filling on
the scheme which focuses on
providing 15-17-year-olds in
England and Northern Ireland with
a unique opportunity to take part
in a voluntary personal and social
development programme.
The young people meet new
people, take on new challenges
and make an impact in their local
community.
The Foundation has delivered the
scheme since 2019 and this year
the Summer ’22 cohort will take
part in a two-week programme
which consists of four phases: Be
Epic, Live Life, Do Good and Go
Party. They will stay away from
home for four nights and five days
(Monday to Friday) during the
first week and based out of the
Foundation’s community hub for
the second week.
The group will stay at Taplow Lakes
and will “Be Epic” by taking part in
activities such as kayaking, paddle
boarding, archery, axe throwing
plus many more!
The first week will also include
“Live Life” where the young
people will move on to activities
that are all about getting life skills
to set them up for the future like
cooking, money management, CV
workshops and public speaking.
During week two the group will be
based within the local community
in East London and they will
team up to help a local charity or
cause of their choice to make a
difference to their area; completing
the “Do Good” phase of the
programme in the process.
Finally, they will “Go Party!” at the
NCS graduation. This is a chance to
celebrate all the great work that’s
been achieved and look back on
memories that have been made.
Every NCS graduate receives a
certificate signed by the Prime
Minister, which is a great addition
to their CV!
Here’s some insight and feedback
from previous NCS participants
with the West Ham United
Foundation…
How would you sum up the
programme?
“I would sum up the experience of
the NCS programme as the best
thing ever. It gave me a completely
new confidence, the chance
to meet new people and I did
something that I always thought I
would never be able to do. I want
to become a volunteer for the
programme in the future because I
want to be able to inspire and help
others.”
I know that other people would.
If you get the chance to take part,
just do it.”
IT’S ALL KICKING OFF

Mother’s Day Joy
for Brynjarsdóttir
Sunday’s match against Brighton & Hove
Albion was one that Dagný Brynjarsdóttir will
remember for a very long time.
Despite the defeat to the Seagulls, it was
the moments that were had before the match
and as the team walked out of the tunnel at
the Chigwell Construction Stadium that the
midfielder will remember with such fondness.
The Iceland international was surprised by
her son, Brynjar, and he walked alongside his
mother onto the pitch to celebrate Mother’s
Day – becoming our first ever mascot since
moving to Dagenham.
Brynjar smiled alongside his mother as the
pair walked out and were cheered onto the
field by both sets of supporters – and they were
then presented with flowers and a goody-bag
from General Manager, Aidan Boxall.
Brynjarsdóttir spoke about the wonderful
moment at the full-time whistle:
“It was absolutely amazing. Brynjar has never
been on the pitch with me before, so it was
very special to me, and the club did an amazing
job of surprising me.
“I didn’t know he was going to be walking
on with me until after the warm-up, so it was
a very special moment for me and I’m very
thankful for that.”
HAMMERS SECURE
FIRST EVER WIN
OVER CITIZENS
West Ham United’s win away at
Manchester City in October will go
down as one of the most memorable
matches from the 2021/22 season.
The Hammers had never taken a
point off the Citizens in the Barclays FA
Women’s Super League before making
the trip up to the Academy Stadium.
But they produced a resilient
performance on the day! A first half
header from Dagný Brynjarsdóttir
gave the Hammers the lead before an
exquisite lob from Yui Hasegawa doubled
the advantage deep into added time.
An exceptionally hard-working
defensive performance saw Olli
Harder’s side reap the rewards, with
Mackenzie Arnold in inspired form
in the Irons goal throughout.
