STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES FOR COMMUNICATION SITES AC POWER SPD REQUIREMENTS<br />

7.4.3 INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS<br />

All SPDs shall be installed per the manufacturer’s installation instructions <strong>and</strong> in accordance with all<br />

applicable codes. Type 1 <strong>and</strong> Type 2 devices shall be securely attached to the mounting surface <strong>and</strong><br />

shall not depend on the interconnecting raceway <strong>for</strong> support.<br />

7.4.3.1 LOCATION<br />

When selecting the location, consideration must be given to conductor routing, length <strong>and</strong> required<br />

number of bends in each conductor. The SPD shall be installed as close as possible to the associated<br />

main disconnect or panelboard, <strong>and</strong> in a location that permits the shortest <strong>and</strong> most direct electrical<br />

connection. The most suitable location is immediately adjacent to the associated panelboard keeping the<br />

conductor length as short as possible. To accommodate this specification some manufacturers have<br />

developed specific models <strong>for</strong> installation directly above, below, or to the right or left of the associated<br />

panelboard.<br />

7.4.3.2 INTERCONNECTING RACEWAY OR CONDUIT<br />

The raceway or conduit between the panelboard (or disconnecting means) <strong>and</strong> the SPD shall be sized<br />

<strong>for</strong> the size <strong>and</strong> number of conductors to be routed through it. A non metallic conduit (such as PVC) or<br />

raceway is recommended. The length shall be as short as possible. This raceway shall be routed as<br />

direct as possible between the SPD, the disconnecting means (if a separate enclosure is used), <strong>and</strong> the<br />

associated panelboard. The raceway or conduit shall not be used as a support <strong>for</strong> the device.<br />

7.4.3.3 CIRCUIT BREAKER OR DISCONNECTING MEANS<br />

The SPD shall be wired through a 60-Ampere (or larger) circuit breaker, NFPA 70-2005, Article 110.9,<br />

or in accordance with local jurisdictional codes.<br />

7.4.3.4 CONDUCTOR SIZE, LENGTH AND ROUTING<br />

Conductor size, total circuit length, <strong>and</strong> routing are critical to proper SPD per<strong>for</strong>mance. The conductor<br />

shall be of the minimum size recommended by the manufacturer, however, shall not be smaller than<br />

16 mm 2 csa (#6 AWG). Larger conductor sizes are most desirable. A maximum conductor length of<br />

610 mm (2 ft.) is most desirable. The conductors shall be routed together <strong>and</strong> shall be free of sharp<br />

bends or angles of less than 90 degrees.<br />

7.4.3.5 PERFORMANCE EVALUATION<br />

SPDs shall be evaluated using the specific criteria outlined in “AC Power Line SPD Test Certification<br />

Requirements” on page 7-47, <strong>and</strong> shall meet the requirements established in this section <strong>and</strong> Table 7-4<br />

on page 7-32. Devices that do not meet this minimum criteria shall not be furnished, installed, or<br />

recommended <strong>for</strong> installation.<br />
