STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES FOR COMMUNICATION SITES GLOSSARY<br />

British Thermal Unit: A st<strong>and</strong>ard measurement of generated energy, typically as heat. (1 BTU<br />

equals 1.055 kJoules of energy.)<br />

Brownout: A long-term under-voltage condition lasting minutes, hours or even days at a time. They<br />

are often intentionally instituted by an electric utility company when peak dem<strong>and</strong> exceeds generating<br />

capacity.<br />

BTU: British Thermal Unit.<br />

Building: For the purposes of this manual, a permanent structure capable of regular human occupancy<br />

built on a foundation that contains <strong>communication</strong>s equipment <strong>and</strong> related ancillary support systems,<br />

<strong>and</strong> may contain other unrelated equipment <strong>and</strong>/or facilities.<br />

Cabinet/enclosure: An enclosure that houses <strong>communication</strong>s equipment <strong>and</strong> ancillary systems<br />

only. It is designed such that equipment contained within can be accessed without the need <strong>for</strong><br />

personnel to enter the cabinet.<br />

Cable ladder: An open steel structure (painted or anodized) suspended from the ceiling that provides<br />

an orderly means of support <strong>and</strong> routing <strong>for</strong> wires <strong>and</strong> cables throughout a <strong>communication</strong>s site. May be<br />

installed inside the building or vertically to guide cables on a tower. All exterior cable ladders should be<br />

constructed of galvanized metal. See Cable runway.<br />

Cable runway: A structure provided <strong>for</strong> the routing <strong>and</strong> management of cabling. May be located<br />

below a raised floor, suspended from the ceiling, or mounted on top of equipment racks <strong>and</strong>/or cabinets.<br />

The term Cable Runway is used in this manual to include both cable ladders <strong>and</strong> cable trays.<br />

Cable tray: A solid structure, typically constructed of aluminum or fiberglass, suspended from the<br />

ceiling that provides an orderly means of support <strong>and</strong> routing <strong>for</strong> wires <strong>and</strong> cables throughout the<br />

interior of a <strong>communication</strong>s site. See Cable runway.<br />

Caisson: A drilled cylindrical foundation shaft used to transfer a load through soft soil strata to firm<br />

strata or bedrock. The shaft is filled with either rein<strong>for</strong>ced or unrein<strong>for</strong>ced concrete. A caisson may<br />

either be a straight shaft or bell type of installation.<br />

CATV: Cable Television.<br />

CCTV: Closed-Circuit Television.<br />

CEB: Central Electronics Bank<br />

Cellular: A multi-site, low-power full-duplex radio system that interfaces to the PSTN.<br />

Central Electronics Bank: Electronic equipment that provides the interface between the console<br />

dispatch positions <strong>and</strong> the RF equipment (CEB).<br />

Central Office: The main switching center of a telephone service provider or local exchange carrier<br />

(LEC).<br />

CEPT: European Committee of Post <strong>and</strong> Telegraphs.<br />

CFC-free: Denotes a refrigerant which does not use chlorofluorocarbons.<br />

CFR: Code of Federal Regulations.<br />

Channel bank: A device that places multiple channels on a digital or analog carrier signal.<br />

Channel Service Unit: A digital DCE used to terminate digital circuits (such as DDS or T-1 lines) at<br />

the customer site. It conditions the line, ensures network compliance with FCC rules, <strong>and</strong> responds to<br />

loopback comm<strong>and</strong>s from the central office.<br />
