STANDARDS AND GUIDELINES FOR COMMUNICATION SITES SAFETY INFORMATION<br />

1.3.2 GENERAL SAFETY GUIDELINES<br />

The following are general safety precautions that must be observed:<br />

WARNING<br />

All Motorola employees <strong>and</strong> contractors, <strong>and</strong> other personnel shall be required to use<br />

an appropriate EME monitoring device when working in the vicinity of fixed<br />

transmission sources of RF energy, unless they are able to conclude clearly that RF<br />

energy levels where they are working do not exceed those permitted by applicable<br />

<strong>st<strong>and</strong>ards</strong> <strong>and</strong> regulations. See Appendix A <strong>for</strong> additional in<strong>for</strong>mation. Contact<br />

Motorola's Site Design <strong>and</strong> Integration Team <strong>for</strong> further in<strong>for</strong>mation on EME awareness<br />

<strong>and</strong> monitors.<br />

• All Motorola employees, contractors, <strong>and</strong> other personnel working at <strong>communication</strong> <strong>sites</strong> shall be<br />

familiar with the in<strong>for</strong>mation contained in this manual <strong>and</strong> shall follow the appropriate <strong>guidelines</strong>.<br />

• To avoid injury or death caused by electric shock, do not wear a grounded wrist strap when working<br />

with high-voltage equipment.<br />

• Objects heavier than 18.2 kg (40 lb.) should be lifted by two or more people.<br />

• Be<strong>for</strong>e disturbing the surfaces in an existing structure ensure that asbestos is not present. Surfaces<br />

containing asbestos can result in an inhalation hazard when disturbed by drilling, cutting, s<strong>and</strong>ing,<br />

or demolition. Only certified asbestos abatement professionals shall per<strong>for</strong>m asbestos removal. A<br />

certificate of occupancy shall be secured where such abatement has been per<strong>for</strong>med.<br />

• Personnel per<strong>for</strong>ming installation <strong>and</strong> maintenance should wash their h<strong>and</strong>s be<strong>for</strong>e eating <strong>and</strong><br />

avoid touching mouth <strong>and</strong> nose while h<strong>and</strong>ling equipment <strong>and</strong>/or debris.<br />

• In environments where explosion hazards may exist, non-incendive intrinsically safe electrical<br />

components shall be used. Note that certain locations may be entirely unacceptable <strong>for</strong> housing<br />

electronic equipment.<br />

• Communications equipment shall not be installed in elevator equipment rooms unless specific,<br />

code-allowed measures have been taken to mechanically isolate any wiring from moving<br />

equipment.<br />

• All applicable health <strong>and</strong> safety codes shall be followed when per<strong>for</strong>ming tasks discussed in this<br />

manual.<br />

• Climbing of ladders <strong>and</strong> towers poses significant safety risks. Only personnel trained in this<br />

practice, <strong>and</strong> who possess the proper equipment shall per<strong>for</strong>m such work. The Motorola<br />

Contractors Fall Protection Program shall be observed.<br />

• Utility locator services shall be used to locate buried utilities be<strong>for</strong>e conducting any subsurface<br />

explorations.<br />

• To ensure personnel safety, all excavations shall be conducted in accordance with OSHA safety<br />

<strong>and</strong> excavation regulations, <strong>and</strong>/or local safety regulations (whichever is more stringent).<br />

• The fire department shall be notified as soon as a fire is discovered. Notification shall not be<br />

delayed in order to assess the results of fire fighting ef<strong>for</strong>t using on-site portable fire extinguishers.<br />
