Community News Update
Tuesday, March 29, 2022
Message from Mayor Lake
It has been a busy few weeks in Cumberland
following recent rainfall and storms. Many of our
areas have been heavily impacted and we continue
to receive reports of damaged roads and footpaths.
To date, Council has received 980 reports of potholes
with 653 of them already repaired. Streets and
parklands have also been attended to and cleared of
debris, tree branches and fallen trees. Staff are working hard to
maintain the safety of parks and reserves in order to reopen them
following closures.
Although Council is still attending to the backlog of reports, we
anticipate that the works may take a few more weeks to complete. We
appreciate your patience during this time as Council continues to patrol
and repair the damage throughout the Cumberland area.
I (and other Councillors) continue to hear from Cumberland residents
whose homes have been damaged in the recent storms and who are
experiencing difficulty in having their claims for government disaster
relief considered and determined. This is concerning, particularly given
that residents of neighbouring local government areas do not appear
to be having such problems. On 18 March I wrote to Senator Bridget
McKenzie, Minister for Emergency Management (Cth) and the Hon
Stephanie Cooke, Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience
(NSW) asking for clarification and assistance. At the time of writing this
I have yet to receive a response. I will continue to press for an equitable
resolution.
Lastly, Council has been a hive of activities over the last few days with
the Seniors Festival that kicked off last Friday. There has been a talent
quest, morning teas and lunches, dine in movie day and Tai Chi classes,
with more events scheduled this week across our libraries and services.
Following the challenges the community has faced over the past few
years, the Seniors Festival has been a wonderful opportunity for our
senior citizens to get active and reconnect.
LOCAL NEWS
System under pressure
Opposition, nurses fear patient care is suffering as data shows long waits
ELLIE BUSBY
New data has revealed that emergency
treatment, ambulance
wait times and elective surgery
lists for western Sydney patients are
longer than ever before.
There are fears western Sydney patients
are further falling behind under key
health and hospital indicators, following
the release of data from the Bureau of
Health Information (BHI).
The data reveals the median waiting time
for T2 emergency patients is 15 minutes
across the Western Sydney Local Health
District (WSLHD), compared to only one
minute for patients in St Vincent’s LHD.
At Westmead Hospital, only 36.4 per cent
of T2 emergency patients had their treatment
starting on time.
Half the patients arriving by ambulance
to Westmead Hospital waited 21 minutes
before being transferred to emergency
care. 10 per cent waited over 58 minutes,
an increase from 41 minutes last year.
“The health system in NSW is under
enormous strain, if you need emergency
care tomorrow, you will wait longer for
Westmead Health Precinct.
the ambulance to turn up then you have
done in over 10 years,” Shadow Minister
for Health Ryan Park said.
“We know the health and hospital
system is under enormous strain but
this data set proves it very clearly. Health
workers, nurses, doctors, medical staff are
saying to the Government very clearly that
patient safety is at risk, their own health
and safety is at risk unless we start to see
an investment in additional staff going
forward.”
The NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association
(NSWNMA) said the data showed
the growing workload pressures on nurses
and midwives within the public health
system.
“The pressure on ambulance services
and emergency departments has continued
to build during the pandemic and it’s
taking a toll on health staff,” NSWNMA
Assistant General Secretary Shaye
Candish said.
“It’s unsafe for the patients and it’s
unsafe for staff.”
WSLHD Chief Executive Graeme Loy
said he acknowledged the most recent BHI
reporting period was a challenging one
for WSLHD, but said there were also some
positives.
“It should be noted that despite staffing
difficulties and the challenges around
ensuring the high number of complex
COVID-related patients presenting to
our hospitals were safely accommodated,
more than half of all presentations to our
emergency departments started treatment
on time and left the ED within four
hours,” Mr Loy said.
One issue with Buddy euphoria
Buddy Franklin kicking his 1000th AFL
goal and the subsequent celebrations was
one of the great moments in Australian
sport and will be replayed on highlights
reels for decades to come.
And when it is, we’ll see thousands of
people running around with their mobile
phone held up, desperate to live out the
moment through a camera lens rather
than actually be part of it.
But that’s society today: if you didn’t
your device, it didn’t happen.
It’s a shame really, but a reflection of
where we’re at.
America has always held a special place
in my life. Returning time and again has
allowed me to explore new horizons and
consider Australia with fresh perspective.
As a Sydney Morning Herald journalist,
I remember visiting New York in the
summer of 2005 and admiring the city’s
resilience from the September 11 terror
attacks.
Studying a masters of public policy at
the University of Chicago two years later,
I stayed up all night to watch Labor sweep
to power.
Kevin Rudd had perfectly captured the
times, painting a vision of a modern,
post-mining boom Australia with revolutionised
health and education systems,
indigenous reconciliation and action on
climate change.
Fuelled by Barack Obama’s barrierbreaking
victory a year later, it felt like a
pinnacle for progressive politics – a time
when anything was possible.
Yet in 2010, it all came to tears for Rudd.
This time, I was working for Newsweek in
New York and glued to his final press conference
several time zones away; the last
person in the office other than the janitor
vacuuming the carpet.
Since then, I’ve travelled to America
many times, including amidst this year’s
Omicron wave. After a 2021 in Parramatta
constrained by curfews and lockdowns,
California’s coastal highway and the
granite cliffs of Yosemite inspired awe.
Yet in other ways, a nation that once carried
such hope for me felt unrecognisable.
Formerly dynamic city centres were
emptied out and dotted with homeless.
Out on the streets, drugs were being
swapped in plain sight, while on cable
television, conservative presenters
railed at Joe Biden. From the west coast
to the rural hinterlands and down south,
I also witnessed completely polarised approaches
to handling the virus.
Perhaps a similar malaise befalls Australia
in this Federal Election year. Exhausted
by the pandemic, dulled by the
war in Ukraine, battered by the price at
the supermarket checkout and petrol
pump, it certainly feels as if we’ve become
more disillusioned and disconnected.
The risk is that like Americans, we’re
permanently checking out.
This is a time of transitions: a post-pandemic
society, a decarbonising economy,
a new tripolar era in international security.
I think the task for Scott Morrison
and Anthony Albanese – starting with
this week’s federal budget – is to inspire
Australians to believe we can rediscover
our national purpose even amidst challenging
times.
Big narratives and themes such as: taking
national digital transformation to the
next level, using infrastructure like the
NBN, 5G and soon 6G to innovate and
create new jobs. Rebalancing economic
activity between Australia’s cities, suburbs
and regions, and supporting people
to live and work how they want. Harnessing
the green opportunity. Embracing a
caring society that strengthens our safety
net, values our elderly and ensures we
prepare for future pandemics.
As renewal occurs nationally, so too
in Parramatta, where MP Julie Owens is
retiring after 18 years. While I’ve been
honoured that many community members
have encouraged me to stand for Labor
preselection, it is clear that Andrew
Charlton has the confidence of the party
and senior figures.
Let’s make the next election a true contest
of ideas for the future of the nation.
Above all, though there is much that is
fine about America, we cannot ever descend
into the carnage, cynicism and
tragic divisions of America. Let’s remember
our shared spirit as Australians – and
let’s never lose hope.
Labor representatives fear backlash
after it was revealed Opposition
Leader Anthony Albanese wants
Andrew Charlton to be the party’s
candidate for the federal seat of
Parramatta.
Mr Charlton, Accenture Managing
Director and former economics
adviser to Kevin Rudd, is
reportedly Mr Albanese’s pick
for the seat to be vacated by
Julie Owens at this year’s
election.
It comes after Labor
was criticised for parachuting
candidacy
for Fowler,
Australian
Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese speaking to the media.
LOCAL NEWS
Questions continue as Albo’s
captain’s pick is scrutinised
If Mr Charlton were to be selected it
would be ahead of local solicitor Durga
Owen and union lawyer Abha Devasia,
two women who are from diverse backgrounds.
As an owner of a $16 million house in
Sydney’s Bellevue Hill, many Labor locals
fear that Mr Charlton won’t understand
the needs of Parramatta’s residents.
City of Parramatta Councillor for the
Dundas Ward Pierre Esber called it a
“disgrace”.
“I know [Mr Charlton] went to school
here as a kid but we’ve got plenty of good
people locally who could run for the Labor
seat,” Cr Esber said.
“Andrew has got a connection to Bellevue
Hill, which is fine, but what’s his
connection to Parramatta? The time has
come where politics has to be local.
“It’s a slap in the face for the locals. If you
can’t decide on the candidate let the rank
and file decide.”
President of the Parramatta Federal
Electorate Committee (FEC) James Shaw
said he would be disappointed if branch
members didn’t get a say in who the
Parramatta candidate is.
“I have nothing personal against
Andrew, but I strongly believe that branch
members should choose the candidate for
Parramatta, as per the rules,” Mr Shaw
said.
Parramatta FEC issued a statement on
Tuesday, March 22, calling for a rank and
file ballot to be held immediately.
“The knowledge and understanding of
our extraordinary diverse area and the
dedication of local branch members has
kept Labor in Parramatta,” the statement
said.
“Local branch members know what is
needed and giving them the opportunity
to decide who our candidate will be is the
best way of ensuring we win Parramatta
and win government.”
When asked about Mr Charlton, Mr
Albanese told the ABC he’s a great success
story.
“He’s an outstanding contributor to
public debate particularly in the area of
economics,” Mr Albanese said.
“We’ll have those discussions and deliberations.
It was hoped that a consensus
candidate in Parramatta would emerge.
Those discussions are ongoing.”
Officially opened in April 2021, the Escarpment
Boardwalk is one of the final links in the popular
Parramatta Valley Cycleway, connecting over
20 kilometres of off-road paths along both sides
of the Parramatta River, from Parramatta Park
to Melrose Park. The Boardwalk has been used
by almost one million pedestrians and cyclists
since it opened.
Two new sets of stairs connecting the path to
Stewart and Macarthur streets were also installed
as part of the $18 million project. We are so lucky
to have a boardwalk that makes the most of the
local natural environment and Parramatta River
– congratulations to all Council staff involved in
delivering this very unique project!
Work begins on Alfred Street Bridge
Council has started construction on Alfred Street
Bridge, an impressive new pedestrian and cyclist
connection over the Parramatta River. Located
between James Ruse Drive and Gasworks Bridge,
the 4.5-metre-wide, 200-metre-long link will be
the first true diagonal arch bridge in Australia.
The $19 million project, co-funded by Council
and the NSW Government, will provide the City’s
growing number of residents, workers, students
and visitors a safe, convenient and scenic walking
and cycling link over the River and directly to the
Parramatta Light Rail. The Alfred Street Bridge
is scheduled to be completed later this year and
will transform the Parramatta River foreshore
and the way people walk and ride in the area
and access the Parramatta CBD.
Council signs renewable energy
agreement
City of Parramatta Council’s electricity supply will
be 100 per cent powered by renewable energy
following a landmark deal with ZEN Energy,
delivered in partnership with Southern Sydney
Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC).
The renewable energy agreement, which was
signed by 25 councils across NSW, is a key
component in the City of Parramatta’s
commitment as outlined in its Environmental
Sustainability Strategy.
The multi-council renewable electricity supply
agreement with ZEN Energy commences in July
2022 and runs to 2026 with an option to extend
to 2030. Worth approximately $180 million, it will
deliver more than 214 gigawatt hours of electricity
per year to council areas across NSW.
The renewable energy will be sourced from large
solar farms at Moree, Hillston and Nevertire
in NSW, and will power more than 300 major
council facilities, 210,000 streetlights, and 3,000
council-managed small sites across the state.
The Alfred Street Bridge will be Australia’s first true diagonal
arch bridge.
A
disability tenant has been told
to vacate her beloved home and
claims she’s been told to move to a
house with known mould issues.
Georgina Chalhoub has lived in her
Merrylands home for over two decades,
raising her family in the place she had
hoped would be her forever home.
Now, she’s been told she has to vacate
the premises by tomorrow (Wednesday,
March 30).
After it was revealed plans to redevelop
the Housing NSW property she lives in had
been approved, Ms Chalhoub was issued
a Confirmation of Redevelopment letter
from the Department of Communities
and Justice (DCJ) and told she would have
to move to a new house.
Upon inspecting the South Wentworthville
residence that has been offered to her,
Ms Chalhoub claimed it was so upsetting
that she collapsed.
George Kincses, a community care
advocate who has acted independently in
this case, said the home has known mould
issues and a stormwater drain pipe that
was not connected to an underground
pipe.
“A neighbour actually came over and told
us that the people who lived there before
were complaining about the mould, and
that was one of the reasons why they were
leaving,” Mr Kincses said.
Although Mr Kincses said that the house
has since been painted with mouldinhibitor
paint, he claims the stormwater
drainage system has still yet to be fixed
and is worried the mould will impact
Ms Chalhoub’s asthma and other health
issues.
“They knew there was mould in there
and they’ve been pushing to get [Ms Chalhoub]
in there for a while, and now they’re
only putting the mould-inhibitor paint
on,” Mr Kincses said.
“As a vulnerable disability tenant, her
safety and wellbeing [should be] a major
priority.”
Ms Chalhoub told Parra News that she
didn’t want to move to the South Wentworthville
property.
“They want to put me in a [new house]
where I have to start over again with
mould issues,” Ms Chalhoub said.
“I don’t even know how to concentrate
on what tablets to take anymore with the
pressure they’re putting me under. How do
you do that to a person with a disability?”
The NSW Land and Housing Corporation
(LAHC) claims extensive work has
been done to the South Wentworthville
property to prepare it for Ms Chalhoub.
“A mould specialist has also been
arranged to inspect the property and
report its findings by the end of April 2022
to further alleviate any concerns the new
tenant may have,” a spokesperson said.
PUBLIC EXHIBITION
Draft site-specific Planning Proposal (PP) and site-specific
Development Control Plan (DCP) for 195 Church Street, 65–79 Macquarie
Street, 38 & 45 Hunter Street, Parramatta (St John’s Anglican Church site)
The City of Parramatta Council is publicly exhibiting a draft site-specific PP and draft site-specific
DCP for the St John’s Anglican Church site to enable redevelopment on the site for two buildings
- a commercial tower and mixed-use building.
The draft site-specific DCP proposes guidelines on heritage, public domain, built form, vehicle
access and car parking, flood management, and environmental sustainability for two development
options in relation to St John’s Parish Church Hall (a local heritage item). The controls for Option A
relate to removal and replacement of the Church Hall, and the controls for Option B relate to partial
retention of the original c1910 Church Hall structure.
The draft site-specific PP proposes controls to change the zoning of some of the land, amend the
permissible density controls on the site and identify a portion of land on the Land Reservation
Acquisition Map together with some other amendments.
A draft Planning Agreement will be exhibited separately and will detail the public benefits the
Church will be required to provide if they are able to secure approval to demolish the Church Hall.
The public benefits include public access to the Church grounds which the Church has also agreed
to upgrade, and provision of vehicle and pedestrian access arrangements that will make moving
around this part of the City easier and safer.
LAST WEEK’S ANSWER
Last week’s photo was taken at the
Parramatta.
Congratulations to Ash Barty on an
incredible career in tennis. She brings
the curtain down way too early, but
does so on her own terms. Never one
to let her sport define her, Ash walks
away as a true champion who has inspired a new
generation of tennis stars who will follow her
path. The Australian Open of 2022 will forever be
remembered as Ash’s crowning glory, and one
that inspired the nation.
There was talk over the off-season
that the Nine Network’s coverage
of the NRL this year would be more
positive. That was clearly fake news,
because the ‘home of rugby league’
continues to have its commentators whinge and
moan during games and concentrate on negativity.
It brings the broadcast down, and it’s not
good for rugby league. Time for Nine to shake
things up once and for all.
ELLIE BUSBY
Australia’s first true diagonal arch
foot bridge is set to transform
the way people travel around
Parramatta.
Nearly five years after the project was
announced, City of Parramatta has finally
started construction on Alfred Street
Bridge. The 4.5-metre-wide, 200-metrelong
link will cater to pedestrians and
cyclists, reaching over the Parramatta
River between James Ruse Drive and
Gasworks Bridge.
As Parramatta continues to grow, the
foot bridge will provide the city’s populace
with a scenic walking and cycling link over
the river and directly to the Parramatta
Light Rail.
It comes after data compiled by Transport
for NSW revealed that walking and
bike riding are becoming an increasingly
popular way of getting to work, school or
the shops.
“Not only is this bridge going to be a
landmark and look incredible over our
beautiful Parramatta River, it’s also
going to make moving in and out of our
Design of the Alfred Street Bridge.
Parramatta CBD much easier for a growing
number pedestrians and cyclists,” City
of Parramatta Lord Mayor Donna Davis
said.
LOCAL NEWS
Bridge will make history and
give Parramatta a unique icon
“We’ve seen the number of people using
our riverside paths and cycleways in this
area double over the last five years, with
usage spiking during the pandemic. There
has been a clear need for a bridge at the
eastern end of our CBD and the new Alfred
Street Bridge will make these trips around
our City safer and faster.”
Funded by both Council and the NSW
Government, the $19 million bridge is
being manufactured in western Sydney
using 280 tonnes of Australian steel.
The Alfred Street Bridge project forms
part of City of Parramatta’s plans to
revitalise the Parramatta River foreshore,
including the redevelopment of Charles
Street Square. Work has now begun on the
upgrade of this precinct, which sits adjacent
the Ferry Wharf at Parramatta Quay.
The upgraded square will feature new
ramps and stairs, a wide riverfront walk,
paved terraces, an amphitheatre and
new public shelter, set amongst trees and
gardens.
“Charles Street Square has been a
gathering place for locals and visitors for
thousands of years and is the gateway to
the Parramatta CBD for people who come
by ferry,” Cr Davis said.
Alfred Street Bridge is due for completion
later this year, with work on the Charles
Street Square upgrade scheduled to finish
in early 2023.
Parramatta’s outdoor autumn event
series is “bringing back the music”
in a big way – with over 250 artists
set to perform.
After COVID put Parramatta’s night life
in hibernation, the City of Parramatta is
finally bringing entertainment back to
the city’s streets. Running up to Saturday,
April 23, Parramatta’s event program
will look to shine a light on the arts and
support local businesses.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Donna
Davis believes the events will help locals
begin to celebrate life again, as they start
to come out of the COVID crisis.
“We’re so keen to have people coming
back into our city, staying back after work,
visiting not just once but several times,” Cr
Davis said.
“The amount of entertainment we have
over the next three weeks will give people
an opportunity to come back again and
again.
“It’s just incredible to see so many people
out there, soaking up the atmosphere and
buying food from local vendors, that’s
what it’s about for us – supporting our
businesses.”
Caroline Butler-Bowdon is hoping the
program will help to build citizen confidence.
“The NSW Government is so thrilled
to be supporting open streets, we know
how hard many of our local councils have
struggled during COVID,” Ms Butler-
Bowdon said.
“[The event series] is about how we can
boost citizen confidence but also about
how we get people to start spending again,
how do we get people out and supporting
local businesses.”
The biggest event series since the
pandemic began, the program features
the Parramatta Nights Street Festival,
two concerts in Parramatta Park, jazz in
Parramatta Square, as well as art installations,
roving performers and food and
beverage offerings.
A new addition to Parramatta Nights,
Ngana Birrung (Dharug for black stars)
will see performances by some of Australia’s
most renowned First Nations artists,
including Briggs.
Cr Davis said that all events will be delivered
in line with public health orders.
“Please get down to Parramatta and you
will be surprised how much talent we have
and what we’re doing to support the arts,
not just for Parramatta but western Sydney
and greater Sydney,” Cr Davis said.
BUSINESS
WITH GRAHAM FITZPATRICK
WESTERN SYDNEY BUSINESS CENTRE • 4721 5011
Making sure your business can
handle whatever confronts it
One of the things we have been
hearing a lot about as a result
of the pandemic, bush fires and
floods is Business Resilience. So what is
it and why is it important?
Business Resilience by definition
allows businesses to adapt quickly to
disruptions, maintain continuous business
operations and safeguard people,
assets and brand equity.
Resilient businesses are best placed to
survive an economic slowdown and ride
out uncertainty.
Your staff are a key asset when it comes
to how resilient your business is. Having
transferable skills should be high on the
list when it comes to employing staff.
Transferable skills relate to staff that
have a range of skills that are useful
to employers across various jobs and
industries.
For example, communication, technical
and problem-solving skills. Employees
that are very adaptable is also a big
plus when it comes to being resilient.
Upskilling your staff is also vital to your
Resilience planning.
One of the big issues that we have all
experienced at some time due to the
pandemic was the loss of key personnel.
Businesses need to identify who their
strongest, most important players are
and understand what critical skills and
knowledge gaps would exist if they are
away for an extended period of time.
There is also the need to be aware at all
times of what your employees are working
on and what processes they follow to
complete their work.
Communication is also important
when it comes to being more resilient.
Providing staff with context is important.
There is no such thing as over communication
in times of crisis. Involving
your staff in the planning process is also
important to ensure engagement and
commitment.
The other important factor in all of this
is you. Business owners and managers
need to be able to make plans and implement
them. Today’s leaders need to have
an agile mindset and be responsive.
Being optimistic and looking for new
opportunities is important more than
ever before.
The mental health of you and your
team is also important. Make sure that
everyone is aware of what support is
available and make sure that everyone
looks out for one another.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Curious, quirky Aquarians are keen to
ricochet off in diverse new directions.
Which is exactly how it should be, as
you explore and experiment to the max.
And don’t worry about making messy
(or embarrassing) mistakes along the
way. Keep stretching your wings, trying
new things and being the authentic you!
Your inspirational quote is from singersongwriter-musician
Emmylou Harris,
who turns 75 on Saturday. “Normal is a
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
The New Moon lights up your cash
zone, which signals a fresh financial
chapter. So the more proactive and informed
you are about money matters,
the better your fiscal future will be.
Strong self-esteem is also a priority this
week Pisces. Try to get the balance right
between quiet relaxation and vigorous
work. Your motto is from French writer
Emile Zola, who was born on April 2,
1840. “The artist is nothing without the
gift, but the gift is nothing without work.”
ARIES
MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
Restless Rams are ready to charge off
in exciting new directions, as the New
Moon lights up your sign on Friday. So
it’s the best week of the year to percolate
ideas, make plans and be proactive. But
the week starts with the Venus/Saturn
conjunction in your hopes and wishes
zone. So avoid the temptation to get carried
away, over-promise and then under-deliver.
If you fail to follow through
on your fabulous intentions, then everyone
will end up feeling disappointed.
TAURUS
APRIL 21 TO MAY 21
The New Moon lights up your seclusion
zone so you’re keen to meditate,
contemplate, ruminate and rejuvenate.
But don’t use it as an excuse to hide away
and escape the challenges of the world.
On Monday and Tuesday, taskmaster
Saturn hooks up with your patron planet
Venus, in your career zone. So there are
ambitious goals to set and professional
standards to reach. Which will require
hard work, patience and persistence. No
snoozing on the job Bulls!
The current planetary aspects help you
communicate your ideas with extra passion
and power, as you link up with likeminded
friends and influential people
at work and within your peer group. But
don’t get so stirred up and side-tracked
that you lose sight of the authentic Gemini
within. Be inspired by singer Celine
Dion (who turns 54 on March 30). “What
do you need to stay grounded, in touch,
in love, connected and emotionally balanced?
Look within yourself.”
Avoid being a lonesome Crab! This
week professional projects and creative
collaborations with colleagues are
favoured, as you spark ideas off each
other and pool your talents to produce
something special. The New Moon
and Mercury increase enthusiasm and
encourage rebooting a rickety work
relationship that’s been experiencing
problems. Venus and Saturn also help a
union move to a deeper and more satisfying
level. Close consultation is the key.
Are you in the process of making an
important decision? A parent, teacher,
mentor or close friend has some wise
advice for you. Listen closely to what
they say and then let your intuition be
your guide. Coupled Cats – Venus and
Saturn hook up in your romance zone,
so work hard to make the relationship
even better. Single Lions – you will find
your soul mate, as long as you are realistic.
(Remember, the ‘perfect’ partner
doesn’t exist - everyone has flaws!)
Some interpersonal challenges are
likely (especially with loved ones or work
colleagues) so straightforward speech is
recommended this week. You’ll get the
best results if you research something
thoroughly (with your Virgo x-ray vision)
and then tell it like it is. Other people will
appreciate your direct and no-nonsense
approach. It’s also a good time to read a
detective story, uncover a secret, solve a
puzzling problem or get to the bottom of
an intriguing mystery.
Is a close relationship stuck in a rut?
This week the New Moon and Mercury
encourage you to blast away the cobwebs
and look at things from a fresh angle.
Attached Librans – are you doing all
the giving, while your partner is doing all
the taking? Singles – look for someone
who is creative and kind. But how well
do you really know your nearest and
dearest? It’s time to dig deeper and gain
valuable insights into the inner motivations
of a friend or family member.
Courtesy of the New Moon, it’s a good
week to review your physical well-being
and fitness levels. Can you introduce
healthier food choices, stop bad habits
(like smoking) or reboot your exercise
program? Get moving and make a dynamic
start! Avoid the temptation to operate
on autopilot. If you shake up your
daily routine, then it will put an extra
spring in your Scorpio step. But a relationship
with a family member could involve
you taking on more responsibility.
Sagittarians can be selfish, self-indulgent
souls. With the New Moon spotlighting
your leisure zone, you’ll be
preoccupied with your immediate entertainment
wants and personal pampering
needs. However, over the coming
year, you’ll shift your focus further afield,
as you make some important decisions
about your place in the wider world.
Saturn will teach you that social responsibility
and community involvement are
just as important as individual priorities.
This week’s fiery New Moon activates
your domestic zone so it’s a good time
to declutter and tweak the feng shui at
home, support a family member or get
stuck into a DIY project. There’s also a
conjunction between Venus and your
power planet Saturn. So make sure you
are clear and concise in the way you
communicate with friends, work colleagues,
clients and/or customers. And
don’t be afraid to take on professional
and financial challenges.
Lymphatic drainage
is a useful massage,
treating conditions
including lymphoedema, post
surgery swelling, oedema,
and IBS. Being a lighter form
of massage, it can also be
beneficial for people with
arthritis, both osteo and rheumatoid,
and fibromyalgia.
So, what is lymphatic drainage
massage? It is a softer
technique, that involves a
combination of strokes and
movements to boost the action
of the lymphatic system,
assisting it to move and remove
toxins from the body.
The lymphatic system does
not have a pump, so a boost,
by way of massage, is often
beneficial. As the lymphatic
system is primarily just under
the surface of the skin, massaging
deep into the muscles is not
conducive to increasing the
flow of lymph.
Lymphatic drainage, being
light, can be incredibly relaxing,
and it is not uncommon
A different kind of massage therapy
it can be helpful in reducing
stress and anxiety, fatigue, and
improving mood, relaxation,
and digestion.
As the lymphatic system
is stimulated, there is an
increase in the movement of
waste through the body, so
people often find they need to
use the bathroom soon after
a massage. For this reason,
it is also important to keep
hydrated. A glass or two of
water afterwards can also help
you to wake up and feel more
refreshed.
There are some serious
contraindications to lymphatic
drainage, so it is important
to check with your GP before
booking in. These include
kidney failure, blood clots and
infections, and some heart
conditions. In saying this, the
majority of people can safely
receive lymphatic drainage
massage, so for a relaxing
refresher, book in to see your
TALKING TECH
WITH DAVID NORRIS • NORTEC IT • 9894 9514
An alternative Internet solution
Starlink is a series of satellites owned
and launched by SpaceX. They are
designed to deliver high speed, low
latency Internet across the globe.
Starlink is now available in Australia
and is a serious competitor to the NBN,
especially in country areas with either
the NBN satellite solution or other slow
Internet solutions. If you have a slow
Internet connection, it could be the
solution you are looking for. Starlink’s
download speeds range between 100-200
Mbps and have a latency of 20-40ms. This
is faster than an NBN 100 Mbps plan for
downloads, but the latency is double the
current NBN latency.
All Internet services are compared by
using Bandwidth measurements. This is
the speed at which a web service can be
delivered to you. Latency is how long a
signal takes to travel to its destination and
back. An excellent example of how latency
works is when watching the news, and
they do a live cross, the host will do a shout
out saying, “Good morning Peter”. Peter
will smile at the camera for a few seconds
and then respond. This is latency.
High latency can affect video chat,
streaming and gaming. It can cause syncing
and freezing on voice or video calls. It
will also affect day to day web browsing.
If you go to a website, the page will load
lightning-fast, but there will be a latency
delay first. Gaming is also affected; in
online games, players’ reaction speed can
make all the difference in a game, latency
even a second slower than other gamers
can determine if you live or die in any
first-person game. SpaceX knows this and
are working to improve the latency, but
remembering that the signal is travelling
to a satellite and back, it will never reach
the latency times of the NBN. Most videos
and on-demand services buffer their
content, so latency doesn’t have a noticeable
effect. The video will take a little
longer to start.
Starlink is a perfect solution for rural
areas and homes or commercial premises
that cannot get the NBN. The NBN satellite
solutions max out at 25 Mbps and
have very low download data limits, so
Starlink is a better and cheaper solution. If
you already have NBN and have 100Mbps
speeds or better, then this at the current
time is the better solution.
Starlink have a simple pricing model with
unlimited data included. Their plans are
competitively priced at $139 per month.
The equipment cost, including delivery,
is around $800 per month and consists of
a satellite dish, tripod and router. Go to
Tuesday, March 29, 2022
I
have always wanted a boat. Didn’t
really care what sort. Well, one stipulation
was that it must have a motor.
The romance of a sail boat has enticed at
times, but I am the sort of guy who wants
to get on and get going.
Sailing just always seemed like too much
hard work, with all those sails and ropes. I
could be wrong, but I probably will never
find out now that I have experienced bareboat
hiring.
Now, some of you may be reading this
and be thinking, Scotty, I have never skippered
a boat in my life. How the heck am
I going to be able to handle an unfamiliar
vessel, with a group of friends, or my
family or heaven forbid, what if it’s just me
and my partner? Is this even something I
should be considering!? Okay here’s the
deal, and no word of a lie.
I have minimal boating experience,
but if you can drive a car, you can steer
a boat. My first mate (my lovely wife),
had no boating experience at all, and we
managed only two marital moments when
it came to what I believe was our hardest
task, and that was tying up to a mooring.
By the end of our three days on the water,
Sam was nailing the moorings on her first
attempt. Besides, you don’t embark on
your nautical adventure without getting
the run of the vessel first.
Niels and Henry at Church Point Charter
are the fundamental professionals when
it comes to making sure that the vessel is
in tip top shape and everything has been
safety checked accordingly before you
board. The chosen skipper and anyone
that wants to be part of the crew are also
given an induction to the general operations
and rules prior to your cruising experience.
The boys will also give you a local’s
perspective on some of the must visits and
the perfect overnight mooring locations
depending on the winds and tides at the
time. If you are smart, like I like to think
I am, you will organise to go through this
process prior to your hire day as it will give
you more time on the water experiencing
the splendour of Pittwater.
The conditions we encountered on
our sojourn determined that we could
only explore the waterways extending
from Church Point north towards Palm
Beach and across to the Basin but there
is so much more to Pittwater and that has
only made me book my return as I must
experience the estuaries that extend from
the mouth of Broken Bay west towards,
Cottage Point. The magic of Jerusalem and
Refuge Bays and the sandstone cliffs of the
surrounding Ku-ring-gai Chase national
Park are beckoning my presence. If, I was
to talk about highlights, for me I would say
the serenity of Towlers Bay as an overnight
location was definitely a stand out.
The Basin was our daytime hang and
was the perfect combination of fun and
sun, a safe swimming location and the
opportunity to walk a few bush tracks
and meet the local fauna. Come morning
I would grab the tinny, head ashore and
TRAVEL
PITTWATER / CHURCH POINT CHARTER
encountered Wallabies, Echidnas and
Water Dragons. I also witnessed a glorious
Sea Eagle grab an unwary fish and enjoy
breakfast perched in a tree overlooking us.
That was a sight to behold.
There is a wonderful sense of freedom
you will experience cruising Pittwater, we
certainly did. The calmness of the water
will set you at ease. Having the creature
comforts of home albeit downsized a tad,
make it comfortable yet still practical and
at the end of the day when you have a full
belly and a couple of relaxing beverages,
you will be gently rocked to sleep in your
snug and cosy cabin.
Don’t forget to take advantage of having
the boat stocked with some of the goodies
available on offer from the team at Waterfront
Café and General store. You will
genuinely be glad you did, as it just takes
the whole experience to a divine level.
The beauty of having the bulk of your
foodie desires already onboard and waiting
for you is not to be taken lightly. It’s just
less for you to worry about and of course
for you to have to organise. You just look
at the pre order list from Waterfront Café
and it will be pre-loaded and placed in the
appropriate fridge or esky for you to enjoy
at your leisure. Simple as that. Oh, and
there is a heck of a lot to choose from, and
all at more than reasonable prices. If you
have ever dined at the much-loved Church
Point institution you will understand what
I mean. Always top-quality produce and
service, and you always leave with your
expectations more than fulfilled.
A few examples of the divine offerings
available to placate your taste buds
ICONIC
COMBO
parra news » Tuesday, March 29, 2022
ON STAGE
CASSIDY PEARCE
With a career spanning
over 50 years, 16 studio
albums under his belt
and an induction into the
ARIA Hall of Fame, it’s
no surprise Ian Moss is considered one of
Australia’s most iconic musicians.
After starting what would become Cold
Chisel in 1973, Ian and his bandmates
went from playing small gigs in Adelaide
to sold-out venues nationwide.
Though he never expected Cold Chisel
to become what it is today, Ian said it’s the
journey here that’s been most memorable
for him.
“Those days of watching it grow, and
watching as you slowly figure things out
and things clicked into place, you figured
out how to write songs – they were exciting,”
he said.
“And then you went and played them in
front of people and they understood it and
they got that excitement, and then the next
time you went back to that venue, there’s
more people, and then the next time
there’s more, and more again. It’s a fortunate
life so far.”
Despite transitioning to a solo career
after Cold Chisel initially disbanded, Ian
hasn’t stopped collaborating with others,
and is currently working with Troy Cassar-
Daley on their ‘Together Alone Tour’ and
accompanying EP.
“About 12 years ago, Troy kicked off our
relationship,” Ian said.
“He was doing an album with more blues
and soul songs, and invited me to come
and do a duet on the old classic, ‘Dark End
of the Street’. Up to that point, I thought
that Troy was just a country singer, but the
boy can sing the blues!”
And this goes both ways, with Ian channelling
his country roots for his contribution
on Troy’s iconic tunes.
“As a kid, growing up in Alice Springs, on
the radio, country music was first and foremost
what you heard usually,” he said
“I loved that stuff, it was stuck in my
head, I just took more of a turn for rock
and blues as I got a little older, but they’re
all very closely intertwined, and I think our
styles are melding really well.”
Aside from the bond created over their
respective genres, the two have found a
shared appreciation for lyricism, which
will be front and centre throughout the
tour.
“Troy writes some fantastic lyrics, and
that’s the thing with the songs we sing in
the show – there’s lots of great stories in the
lyrics themselves, and there’s lots of great
stories behind the lyrics,” Ian said.
The ‘Together Alone Tour’ will be on at
Blue Mountains Theatre on Friday, April
1 at 8pm. Call 4723 5050 for details.
UK prison drama ‘Time’, which was
a surprise hit for me last year, has been
renewed for a second season. It’ll feature
an all-new cast, and this time be set in a
female prison. ‘Time’ screened on BBC
First via Foxtel last year, and is likely to
do the same in 2023 which is the likely air
date.
Channel Seven is gearing up for its
next season of ‘Big Brother’, announcing
the return of legendary housemates
and previous winners Tim Dormer and
Reggie Bird. Bird won the series on 10 in
2003 and Dormer on Nine a decade later.
The pair are among former ‘Big Brother’
“royalty” contestants, who will meet new
contenders in the upcoming season. The
new season of ‘Big Brother’ will air in the
coming months.
TV NEWS
Former ‘Home and Away’ star Lincoln
Younes has been (perfectly) cast as
infamous nightclub mogul John Ibrahim,
in the upcoming Paramount+ series
‘Last King of the Cross’. The local drama
LAST KING OF THE CROSS
PARAMOUNT+
will track Ibrahim’s rise from a povertystricken
immigrant with no education, no
money, and no prospects, to Australia’s
most infamous nightclub mogul in
Sydney’s Kings Cross. The 10-part series,
which is due out later this year, is inspired
by Ibrahim’s autobiography of the same
name.
Magic Johnson seems to be having a
renaissance of late, with Apple TV+ set to
release a four-part documentary on the
life and career of the legendary former
LA Lakers star. ‘They Call Me Magic’ will
offer a rare glimpse into the incredible
real-life story of Johnson, who left his
mark on history through his work – both
on and off the court – and continues
to impact our culture today. The series
features intimate, never-before-seen
interviews with Magic, his family, and an
all-star line-up including Cookie Johnson,
EJ Johnson, Larry Bird, LL Cool J, Snoop
Dogg, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Jordan,
Shaquille O’Neil, President Obama, Dwyane
Wade, Jerry West and more. It will
premiere on Friday, April 22.
New Disney+ series ‘Ms Marvel’ will
premiere on Wednesday, June 8. The
Marvel Studios series stars Iman Vellani
as a superhero who tries to balance high
school life, her family and her emerging
super powers.
One for all the Trekkies out there,
with ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ set
to premiere on Paramount+ on Friday,
May 6. The series will follow Captain
Pike, Science Officer Spock and Number
One in the years before Captain Kirk
boarded the U.S.S. Enterprise, as they
explore new worlds around the galaxy.
Episodes will stream weekly.
The Duke
X
parra news » Tuesday, March 29, 2022
In 1961, Kempton Bunton, a 60-yearold
taxi driver, stole Goya’s portrait
of the Duke of Wellington from the
National Gallery in London.
It was the first and only theft in the
Gallery’s history. Kempton sent ransom
notes saying that he would return the
painting on condition that the government
invested more in care for the
elderly – he had long campaigned for
pensioners to receive free television.
What happened next became the stuff
of legend.
In cinemas March 31.
In 1979, a group of young filmmakers
set out to make an adult film in rural
Texas, but when their reclusive, elderly
hosts catch them in the act, the cast find
themselves in a desperate fight for their
lives.
With a star studded cast including
Jenna Ortega (‘The Fallout’, ‘Scream
5’), Mia Goth (‘A Cure for Wellness’,
‘Emma’) and Brittany Snow (‘Pitch
Perfect’, ‘Someone Great’), this R rated
American slasher film is sure to have
you on the edge of your seat.
‘X’ is out now.
on their own behalf. OCVs are appointed by the Minister for Families, Communities and Disability
Services. The work is part-time, sessional work mainly in the evenings and on weekends and visiting
hours are variable (between 15–40 hrs per month). Hourly remuneration is $34.14 plus expenses.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and people with disability are encouraged to apply. Current
Stone miracle secures Eels victory
NATHAN TAYLOR
Heroic Parramatta Eels forward Ray
Stone, who scored the match-winning
try in Golden Point against Melbourne
on Saturday night, may have played his last
game for the club after seriously injuring his
knee in the act of scoring.
The 24-year-old Redcliffe Dolphins-bound
utility suffered a suspected ACL injury in the
epic 28-24 Golden Point win at AAMI Park
when he chased after a long-range Mitchell
Moses field goal attempt that bounced off the
right upright. Stone – being in the right place
at the right time – managed to pick up the ball,
step to his left and plant down the incredible
match-winner.
What should have been a celebratory moment
for the Eels quickly turned into a period of
concern, with Stone left clutching his right
knee in agony and unable to get up.
At the time of print, Eels officials were yet
to update the public on Stone’s status, but it’s
feared he has played his last game for the Blue
& Golds.
Speaking after the match, a relieved Eels
coach Brad Arthur was full of praise for his
injured forward, who helped Parramatta to
their second win of the season.
“It’s always good when a little bit of luck goes
to those players you can rely on and Stoney is
one of those guys, he works hard,” Arthur said.
“Sometimes he’s in and out of the team but
he never complains, he just gets on with it and
does his job.”
Parramatta captain Clint Gutherson was also
complimentary towards his teammate after
the match.
“He (Stone) just competes on everything.
He can play fullback to prop to coach. Hopefully
his knee isn’t too bad, and he can be
there next week,” he said.
With injuries starting to bite, the Eels will
enjoy the lengthy break between games with
their showdown against St George-Illawarra
set down for Sunday night at CommBank
Stadium.
Arthur said despite his side’s solid 2-1 record
to start the season, they need to improve
their attitude and professionalism.
“We’ve made it harder than it needs to be
[in recent weeks] and we’ve got to improve
some professionalism at the back end of games
and the attitude that we came with today we
need to find that every single week regardless
of what colour jersey we are playing against,”
he said.
Meanwhile, Parramatta have failed to make
the Finals in their first NRLW season.
