Partnering for Impact Scotch would not be what it is today without the involvement of passionate and committed supporters. We asked the Ciardiello, the Ness and the Brake families to give us their perspective on giving and to share with us what inspires them to give to Scotch. Keeah and Richard Ness Current parents; Edwina & Harriet (Year 11) Scotch to us means a lifelong legacy for our children. Legacy which covers not just a physical campus for them to revisit long after they have left school, but also legacy of values and conduct that will set them up for the rest of their lives whether they’re conducting a business transaction or connecting socially. There is just something about the ‘Scotch way’ of doing life, finally Scotch means a chance for our children to walk their journey of knowing who they are encouraged and guided by an army of gold standard teachers and staff. The feeling of giving is something that we completely underestimated. To support the DARE campaign is a chance to ignite part of you that you probably didn’t even know existed. The first donation we made was simply exciting… just to know that we are able to help in our own small way and be part of something so much bigger and greater than us is such a gift. We feel we are part of a lifelong team with good times and just such good stuff to come. To be part of the experiment of the DARE campaign is an investment not only in the fabric of Scotch but in your own personal memory bank. It’s just such an elevating experience that you can’t easily describe but simply have to be part of to know how it feels. Emily and Ili Ciardiello Current parents; Orly (Year 5) & Raff (Year 8) Scotch College is a place where our children can thrive in both their educational and personal growth learning; where we as parents can be involved in a community that aligns with our values and beliefs that children should be given the opportunity to be challenged to achieve success in all areas of their life and not just what they are ‘good at.’ Being a part of Scotch now for over a year, we love the focus on helping our son to be not just a good student, but to be a good person in the world. The DARE campaign was such an ambitious campaign, but it is certainly for the right reasons. Students of today are leaders of the world tomorrow and they need to be sent out into the world the best possible humans they can be. Scotch cultivates this and while a brand-new building itself doesn’t make a school or a student better, a building with purpose and vision in mind does. The new Wellbeing & Sports Centre is not just a building; it symbolises progression where an educational institution understands that wellbeing is the most important factor for success in life. Philanthropy to us means using the knowledge and success gained on our own personal journey to help others on their journey and in turn, to make the planet a better place than when we started. 6
So why Scotch? After an extended period of some 35 years, educating our six children across three continents, we have experienced a variety of educational establishments, but none have that special Scotch X-factor. When we are philanthropic, we feel good knowing we are contributing to positive change and for assisting in creating an environment for a successful future. Philanthropy is attributing positive change for an optimistic future. We encourage others to give to such campaigns wherever they may find them in their world. Scotch can lead as an example of what can be achieved. Pauline & Christopher Brake Past parents; Libby Brake ‘17 & Millie Brake ‘20 Current grandparents; Zoe Windle (Year 6), Zara Windle (Year 10), Freddie Windle (Year 11) We are passionate about Scotch and wish to see the wonderful opportunities afforded to every student continued through the ‘next 100 years’. Pauline and I had the good fortune to ‘discover’ Scotch when our son was in Adelaide with the England Rugby 7s team training on the Scotch oval. At this stage we were still UK residents but after further research, we took the leap of faith and sent daughter Libby as an international boarder in Year 10, with Millie following on a couple of years later. So why Scotch? After an extended period of some 35 years, educating our six children across three continents, we have experienced a variety of educational establishments, but none have that special Scotch X-factor. The energy, enthusiasm and sense of wellbeing encountered when setting foot on either the Junior or Senior School campuses is infectious in the best possible way. In our opinion, Scotch has got the balance right - the appropriate focus on academics alongside an exciting array of additional life enhancing learning opportunities. When you happen upon something so good you want to promote and share it. Involvement with philanthrophy allows us to continue to support Scotch College as the school enters its second 100 years. The DARE campaign, with its focus on sports and wellbeing, will provide many benefits for present and future Scotchies. Education in the 21st century requires a holistic approach and Scotch is undoubtedly a leader with its pioneering vision. The Scotch community is unique and as a family we are delighted that our eldest daughter Emma has also decided to follow us to the other side of the world, so we now have our three grandchildren benefitting from everything Scotch College has to offer too! 7
