Ode to Autumn
“Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness”
John Keats captured the essence of autumn
in his wonderful ode from 1816. We don’t often
think of autumn as an exciting or beautiful time,
unless you live in Vermont. We tend to prefer
other times of the year. The most famous of
Vivaldi’s Four Seasons is La Primavera, which
celebrates spring. We all know Shakespeare’s
wonderful statement: “Shall I compare thee to a
summer’s day?”.
However, we don’t get too excited by autumn,
and we certainly don’t get excited by winter.
Winter is seen as a time hibernation, of cold
frosty mornings with little to cheer the soul in
those short dark days, particularly in the
northern hemisphere.
We are excited by the autumn of the DARE: The
Centenary Campaign, that began back in 2016.
Year 2021 was a hive of summer activity bringing
us to a period of mellow fruitfulness. Autumn is a
time of harvest and celebration of the wonderful
resources we receive from nature. In the same
way we are celebrating the extraordinary gifts
that we have received from our community. It is
a moment to recall all that the Scotch community
means to us as the gifts are gathered in.
And there will be one great moment of
celebration on the Giving Day this year. We hope
that signals the moment of harvest and provides
an opportunity for rejoicing in the generosity of
all around us.
Not only is this a time of thankfulness to you
our community, but it is also equally a time of
triumph for us as a team. My job as the Principal
is to ensure the Philanthropy Team and all who
have worked with them, celebrate their success,
and know that their extraordinary efforts have
brought great results.
Our targets of the DARE: The Centenary Campaign
amidst all our other philanthropic aspirations,
were optimistic. The team has worked long
hours and used intelligent investment to get to
where we are today. It has been a time of intense
activity, and 2021 has seen some great results
with various Appeals.
I am delighted therefore with the content
of this report. The case for support for the
Wellbeing and Sports Centre, has resulted in high
participation from our entire community. As you
would now be aware the Wellbeing and Sports
Centre, will now be known as ‘Purruna, Spencer
Newton Centre’, a name agreed on by the Council
with community consultation. As Scotch, we are
focused on more than raising funds to support
a particular program. We have a larger goal – to
embed a culture of philanthropy to support our
bold ambitions today and into the future. To
this end we are working on how we measure the
sustainability of the culture of philanthropy, and
how we can continuously build on the success of
the last 5 years to deepen the habit of giving.
I commend this report to you all. It shows that
when we gather around a clear set of beliefs and
convictions, a college and an institution can do
remarkable things. Long may Scotch nurture and
grow those convictions about the profound and
enduring benefit education brings to the lives
of young people, and through them, the world
they move into. If we all begin our new plans with
those convictions in mind, our summers will be
long, and the harvests will be rich.
This year we have our last community fundraising
effort, ‘DARE Today’, a Giving Day at Scotch that
will encompass the celebration of giving and will
be a fun and inclusive day for the entire school
and community. I encourage your involvement in
this celebration on Thursday 11 August.

Partnering for Impact
Scotch would not be what it is today without the involvement of passionate
and committed supporters. We asked the Ciardiello, the Ness and the
Brake families to give us their perspective on giving and to share with us
what inspires them to give to Scotch.

Scotch to us means a lifelong
legacy for our children. Legacy
which covers not just a physical
campus for them to revisit long
after they have left school, but also
legacy of values and conduct that
will set them up for the rest of their
lives whether they’re conducting a
business transaction or
connecting socially.
There is just something about the
‘Scotch way’ of doing life, finally
Scotch means a chance for our
children to walk their journey of
knowing who they are encouraged
and guided by an army of gold
standard teachers and staff.
The feeling of giving is something
that we completely underestimated.
To support the DARE campaign is a
chance to ignite part of you that you
probably didn’t even know existed.
The first donation we made was
simply exciting… just to know that
we are able to help in our own small
way and be part of something so
much bigger and greater than us is
such a gift. We feel we are part of
a lifelong team with good times and
just such good stuff to come.
To be part of the experiment of the
DARE campaign is an investment not
only in the fabric of Scotch but in
your own personal memory bank.
It’s just such an elevating experience
that you can’t easily describe but
simply have to be part of to know
how it feels.

Scotch College is a place where our
children can thrive in both their
educational and personal growth
learning; where we as parents can
be involved in a community that
aligns with our values and beliefs
that children should be given the
opportunity to be challenged to
achieve success in all areas of their
life and not just what they are
‘good at.’
Being a part of Scotch now for over
a year, we love the focus on helping
our son to be not just a good
student, but to be a good person in
the world.
The DARE campaign was such
an ambitious campaign, but it is
certainly for the right reasons.
Students of today are leaders of
the world tomorrow and they need
to be sent out into the world the
best possible humans they can be.
Scotch cultivates this and while a
brand-new building itself doesn’t
make a school or a student better,
a building with purpose and vision
in mind does. The new Wellbeing &
Sports Centre is not just a building;
it symbolises progression where an
educational institution understands
that wellbeing is the most important
factor for success in life.
Philanthropy to us means using the
knowledge and success gained on
our own personal journey to help
others on their journey and in turn,
to make the planet a better place
than when we started.

So why Scotch? After an extended period of some 35 years,
educating our six children across three continents, we have
experienced a variety of educational establishments, but none have
that special Scotch X-factor.
When we are philanthropic, we feel
good knowing we are contributing
to positive change and for assisting
in creating an environment for a
successful future. Philanthropy is
attributing positive change for an
optimistic future.
We encourage others to give to such
campaigns wherever they may find
them in their world. Scotch
can lead as an example of what
can be achieved.

We are passionate about Scotch
and wish to see the wonderful
opportunities afforded to every
student continued through the ‘next
100 years’. Pauline and I had the
good fortune to ‘discover’ Scotch
when our son was in Adelaide with
the England Rugby 7s team training
on the Scotch oval.
At this stage we were still UK
residents but after further research,
we took the leap of faith and sent
daughter Libby as an international
boarder in Year 10, with Millie
following on a couple of years later.
So why Scotch? After an
extended period of some 35
years, educating our six children
across three continents, we have
experienced a variety of educational
establishments, but none have that
special Scotch X-factor. The energy,
enthusiasm and sense of wellbeing
encountered when setting foot on
either the Junior or Senior School
campuses is infectious in the best
possible way.
In our opinion, Scotch has got the
balance right - the appropriate
focus on academics alongside an
exciting array of additional life
enhancing learning opportunities.
When you happen upon something
so good you want to promote
and share it. Involvement with
philanthrophy allows us to continue
to support Scotch College as
the school enters its second 100
years. The DARE campaign, with its
focus on sports and wellbeing, will
provide many benefits for present
and future Scotchies. Education in
the 21st century requires a holistic
approach and Scotch is undoubtedly
a leader with its pioneering vision.
The Scotch community is unique
and as a family we are delighted that
our eldest daughter Emma has also
decided to follow us to the other
side of the world, so we now have
our three grandchildren benefitting
from everything Scotch College has
to offer too!

The Most Powerful Weapon to Change the World
Nelson Mandela, former President of South Africa and Nobel Laureate said it best; “Education
is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

the most powerful weapon which you can use to
change the world.”
It will surprise some that Scotch not only believes
in what Mandela said but also puts aside nearly
$1M from its operating budget every year to
provide scholarships to over 100 students in
Mitcham and Torrens Park Campus. A majority
of these scholarships are “merit- based” and
celebrate potential and achievement, both inside
the classroom as well as outside. Others, like
the Merrylees Centenary Scholar or the Bird in
Hand Scholars, are “needs-based” scholarships
to provide access to a transformational Scotch
education to those that could never afford this
opportunity. Investing nearly $1M every year
is a significant investment, that generates a
tremendous impact on our community, state,
and country.
In 2016, we realised that our ability to provide
access and diversity to students through
scholarships was limited by what we could afford.
So, we sought to change that paradigm. That
year the Scotch College Foundation established
a permanent Scholarship Endowment Fund,
increasing opportunities for young people to
access a Scotch education, as well as enhancing
diversity in the College community. The Fund was
established so the principal, will never be spent.
Donations to this endowment are tax deductible
and a portion of the income generated each
year, through prudent specialised investment, is
provided to the College to fund the Foundation’s
commitment to scholarships, with the remainder
reinvested for growing future scholarship
contributions.
In addition to individual gifts that we received
through the DARE Campaign for the Education
Fund, the End of Year Appeal in 2021 raised nearly
$45,000 for the endowment. We encouraged our
community to donate to build this endowment
because every gift to this pool of money, would
provide benefits for many generations.
Today, Mandela’s legacy lives on in myriad ways
– through the policies he implemented, the
foundations and charities he created and – for
many – through the words he spoke and wrote.
Similarly, those that invest in the education of
others establish similar legacies.
As we consider the crucial factors that enable
children to thrive and reach their fullest potential,
we can all be inspired by this vision, and the
fundamental belief that education can do good
in the world.

The Muggs Hill Road Mathematics Scholarship
The Hosking Family have established the Muggs
Hill Road Mathematics Scholarship to enable an
indigenous young man or woman, with potential
or promise in the field of mathematics to attend
Scotch in the middle and senior school.
“This combines our passion for First Nations’
advancement as well as our passion for
diversity and inclusion at Scotch. As a Professor
of Mathematics, I know the importance of
mathematics in education, to be utilized in a
broad range of careers.
We have supported the introduction of an
Indigenous Mathematics Scholarship as too
few are doing maths; I want to assist in a needbased
future student being able to attend
Scotch College.
I believe in Philanthropy for a good cause and
good reason. My four sons have all attended
Scotch, enabling a great education for them all.
I have been a supporter of Ken Webb and John
Newton, and their hard work and vision over the
years at the school. As a family it is something
that we wanted to do, and it provides satisfaction
and fulfilment in doing so. I would encourage
others to become donors towards the Education
or Building Fund as a gift to the current students
as well as future generations.”

Wellbeing & Sports Centre Progress
Purruna, Spencer Newton Centre
The Wellbeing & Sports Centre will be a new hub
for so many activities in the College with 2 full
sized indoor courts, a 25m swimming pool, learnto-swim
pool, 2 gyms with a high-performance
area, collaborative classroom spaces, meeting
rooms, a yoga room and space for Allied Health
Professionals.
It will truly be a transformative facility for
students all the way from Reception to Year 12; a
place for Scotchies to learn, play and grow.
In the language of the Kaurna people, the
name of our new Wellbeing & Sports Centre
is a word that gives life. It is about living, the
wellbeing of our physical self and how our
mind and our hearts enable us to connect
in a wise and knowledgeable way, both with
each other and the land.
‘Purruna, Spencer Newton Centre’ is a
tribute to both the traditional owners of the
land on which we meet and gather, and two
icons in the history of Scotch College, who
have both been instrumental in the most
significant building project in the College’s
history. The Scotch College Council of
Governors is thrilled to bestow such a fitting
name on a facility that will
represent the spirit of Scotch as we enter
our second century.

The Scotch which we know and love, would not be what it is today without the involvement

‘Scotch has been part of our lives as a family
since 1982 when the twins, Ben and Sam entered
the Junior School in Yr 6. It took us a while to
integrate, coming from the state school system,
but Scotchies in all shapes and sizes wormed
their way into our hearts and we cherish the
relationships. We give because we believe in
Scotch – in a choice of education system and
school for everyone – hence we give to the
scholarship endowment program as well
as buildings.’

DARE Today: Scotch Giving Day
Dare Today, Scotch Giving Day will be held on
Thursday 11th August. This will be a 24-hour
online event, incorporating the entire school and
community. It will be a day of celebration and fun for
all those who love Scotch, and an occasion where
we can all come together in the final fundraising
effort for DARE: The Centenary Campaign.
