reassuring to many of those people.”
Cambridge Valley Cycling
President: Gary Dormandy
Cambridge Valley Cycling was
founded in 2004 and comprises
cyclists of all levels who enjoy
riding and socializing together.
The club holds regular rides
during “the season,” three
times a week. Rides usually
begin at 5:30 or 6 p.m. for Mild
Monday and Wednesday rides,
and at 9:30 or 10 a.m. for
Sunday rides. Most routes are
primarily on paved roads with
some dirt roads. We do have a
group of gravel riders who
enjoy the dirt, so we also
schedule rides where the roads
are predominantly dirt ones.
Rides usually begin at the
Cambridge Town Library parking
lot, but other starting points
include the Buskirk Covered
Bridge, Greenwich, Salem,
Arlington, and even Mt.
Greylock. The regular season
runs from March through the
end of November, and for some
diehard members, the club will
squeeze in winter rides, as well.
In addition to the regular riding
schedule, members of the club
participate in many local or
regional biking events. Tour de
Battenkill, Tour de Cure, Billy’s
Ride, Black Fly Challenge,
Whiteface Mtn. And the MHCC
Gravel Gobbler, are among
events in which club members
have participated. Last year we
also began scheduling club rail
trail rides several times during
the season. Finally, there is a
social aspect to the club. We
often will gather at the Argyle
Brewing in Cambridge after our
Wednesday night rides, have a
picnic ride in July from the club
president’s home, start rides
from the RS Taylor Brewery in
Salem or Brown’s Taproom in
Walloomsac, and also a Monday
night favorite, rides from
Benson’s Dairy Bar in Eagle
Bridge. Hope you might come
out and join the fun. More information
and pictures are available
The Cambridge Valley Chamber of
Commerce was established in 1997 by a small
group of business people with a vision of
improving the community and business
opportunities.
During the 20+ years the Chamber has
brought many events and services to the
Cambridge Valley.
Through the years the Chamber created
and has successfully organized 19 Balloon
Festivals, organizing Christmas in
Cambridge celebrations, and worked with
other organizations to enhance the quality of
life for the region. We have also designed and
supplied the Welcome to Cambridge street
banners to the Village along with other decorations,
and annual spring flower planting.
The Chamber has annually updated and
distributed member brochures along with
maintaining the website, plus taking part in
regional discussions regarding tourism and
economic development. We have joined with
our adjoining chambers of Greenwich and
Salem to help publicize a regional destination
of The Battenkill Valley.
The Chamber is the voice of its members.
We strive to maintain and expand the local
business climate, and invite visitors to participate
in our annual events, and day to day
experiences. The Cambridge Valley is a beautiful,
Battenkill Chorale adjusts to singing during Covid era
The Battenkill Chorale
was established in 1995 by
founding director Janet
McGhee. Through the years,
this eclectic and dedicated
group of amateur singers has
become one of the “cultural
crown jewels” of the North
County and the Capital
Region.
The Battenkill Chorale
performs major works from
the choral music literature
from intimate chamber pieces
to larger-scale dramatic
works for soloists, chorus
and orchestra. Its richly varied
and critically acclaimed
repertoire includes both
sacred and secular music
from the 15th to 20th centuries,
all sung in the original
language.
Its 2018 performance of
Verdi’s Requiem was ranked
as the Capital District’s
number-one classical music
performance in the
Schenectady Daily Gazette’s
“Best of 2018.”
The chorale has gone
through some big changes in
the last few years, said the
group’s president and executive
director Judy Leon.
“When Janet McGhee, our
The chorale in rehearsal with founding director Janet
McGhee
founding artistic director,
retired in 2019 after almost
25 years at the helm, many of
our singers took the opportunity
to retire as well. We
went from a chorus of 75 to
100 singers to fewer than 50
quite suddenly.”
The group’s new guest
conductor Noah Palmer
began with a small chorus
but was successfully adding
to its numbers with each
concert cycle. Palmer
became artistic director for
the chorale’s 25th-anniversary
season with a concert in
January 2020.
“Noah took over about a
week before we started hearing
reports about this mysterious
virus,” said Leon.
A collaboration with the
Berkshire Lyric Chorus culminating
in a grand concert
at Seiji Ozawa Hall at
Tanglewood in Lenox,
Massachusetts, had to be
shelved when Covid shut
down everything in March
2020.
It was a real loss, said
Leon. “I was reading reports
about nothing as risky as
singing. It was heartbreaking
to not being able to do it,
for singers and audiences
alike. One oboe sounds a lot
like another, but human
voices? There just isn’t anything
like it.”
The chorale explored a
variety of virtual options,
Leon said, but abandoned
these due to technical and
connectivity issues in rural
Washington County.
The group planned two
live outdoor “pop-up” concerts
when public health
conditions improved.
Interested singers were
mailed the music and a practice
CD and expected to practice
on their own until it was
safe to get together, Leon
said.
In August 2021, chorale
members finally were able to
have several in-person
rehearsals for the pop-up
concert. “We rehearsed without
masks in a large open
barn, everyone was fully
vaccinated and we maintained
distance at all times,”
said Leon. But when one person
in the chorus tested positive
for Covid, members
were masked at all times
until the concerts, which
were both outdoors, one in
Cambridge and one in
Saratoga.
“We voted unanimously
to sing without masks. It was
such a joy to sing together
unencumbered, but also bittersweet,
because our conductor
Noah Palmer had
decided to pursue other
opportunities.”
The group then recruited
chorale friend and accomplished
soprano, organist,
teacher and conductor Gene
Marie Callahan as its guest
conductor and began
rehearsals in September 2021
for concerts scheduled for
mid-January 2022 at the
Arthur Zankel Music Center
at Skidmore College in
Saratoga Springs.
“We had 35 singers registered,
and our rules were
that everyone had to be fully
vaccinated – we checked vaccination
cards at the first
rehearsal – we would wear
masks at all times within the
rehearsal space and we
would maintain distance at
all times.” But then a series
of unfortunate events intervened:
The venue told the
chorale that it would not be
allowed to perform there, the
chorale’s accompanist tested
positive for Covid the day
after a rehearsal, “and then
Omicron hit and that made
us nervous enough to pause
rehearsals indefinitely in
WANT NEWS DELIVERED
RIGHT TO YOUR INBOX?
December 2021.”
The chorale hopes to
begin rehearsals again in
early March and perform on
the weekend of June 4 and 5,
Leon said. Details, including
venue, are still being worked
out.
“Meanwhile, to keep
everyone together and progressing,
our intrepid conductor
Gene Marie Callahan
is providing virtual rehearsals
or ‘listening sessions’
every Thursday at 7 p.m.,
our usual rehearsal time.
This is valuable, but the reality
is that nothing can ever
take the place of in-person
rehearsals. It’s just the
nature of choral singing,”
said Leon.
The pandemic has been a
rough time for choruses,
Leon said. “Nevertheless, we
persevere, because in the
end we just want to be singing.”
The chorale is always
looking for interested singers.
“You don’t have to read
music,” said Leon, because
Sign up at nyvtmedia.com/newsletters
practice CDs are provided.
“People learn music differently,”
she said. “Some
might have pianos in their
houses, others use the CDs to
learn the music by memory.”
Leon rehearses with the
practice CD as she’s driving.
“When people think of a
small community chorus,
they think it might be rinkydink,”
Leon laughed. When
she moved to Cambridge
from an area close to New
York City, she didn’t expect
to find the Battenkill
Chorale. “But then I went to
my first rehearsal, the person
next to me shared her
music with me and I was
blown away.”
Battenkill Conservancy preserves, enhances watershed
The Battenkill
Conservancy began as a
grassroots organization in
1990. It is primarily an all-volunteer
organization promoting
clean water and open
space by preserving and
enhancing New York and
Vermont’s Battenkill watershed
and beyond through
land conservation, education,
advocacy and its River Watch
water quality program.
The Battenkill watershed
covers 450 square miles
beginning in Vermont and
ending where the Battenkill
empties into the Hudson
River in Saratoga, said parttime
executive director
The Battenkill Runs Through It Festival takes place on the Saturday of Memorial Day
weekend each year.
Lorraine Merghart Ballard,
who has been involved with
the conservancy since 2011.
“Cambridge technically
splits the watershed,” said
Ballard. “We’re right on the
A focus of the conservancy’s work is creating public
access to the Battenkill.
cusp. We have a little office in
Cambridge, but we’re all over
the place.”
The conservancy was
instrumental in creating the
525-acre Battenkill Forest, the
530-acre Eldridge Swamp
Preserve and the State Line
Route 313 Rest Area and
Visitor Center. “When
Hurricane Irene hit in 2011,
Eldridge Swamp Preserve
absorbed a lot of the overflow
from the Battenkill,” Ballard
said.
Three additional preserves
held by the conservancy
include the 17-acre Livingston
Brook Heron Rookery in
Greenwich, the 11-acre
Schmidt Meadow Preserve in
Jackson and the three-acre
Rexleigh Marble Mill in
Salem.
“A big part of our mission,”
Ballard said, “is to help
people recognize the 60 miles
of shoreline as a key asset in
the area. Most people haven’t
been on the Battenkill or
don’t know how to get on it.”
A big focus of the conservancy’s
work is creating access to
the Battenkill and educating
the public about “the places
you can legally get on it,
legally fish, legally jump in,
legally put a kayak in.”
It also organizes adopt-astream
programs, community
paddles, river and roadside
cleanups during the spring,
summer and fall, a speaker
series, a recent full-moon
cross-country ski/snowshoe
hike and bonfire, a summer
trip/camp for middle school
students to get out onto the
river to fish and learn biology
. . . “anything to make people
aware of the connection
between land management
and clean water,” Ballard
said.
By working with groups,
schools, colleges, local governments
and the general
public, the conservancy aims
to build environmental literacy
and instill an appreciation
for the watershed that
includes respect for the ecosystem,
shared responsibility
for its well-being and the
experience of a special sense
of place.
“The Battenkill Runs
Through It Festival is our signature
event,” Ballard said.
Taking place in the seven-acre
Battenkill Riverside
Park in Greenwich on the
Saturday of Memorial Day
weekend, the annual event
“brings awareness to the
park, which is located right
on the Battenkill.”
“We want to make people
aware of the watershed and to
think about clean water in a
way that isn’t just drinking
water or swimming water but
more about what’s involved
in maintaining a clean watershed,”
Ballard said. “And if
people love the river, they’ll
take care of it.”
for the big 20th in 2022.
The festival is the second
largest event in Washington
County, right behind the
Washington County Fair.
Because it is run by volunteers
and thanks to its generous
sponsors, it always is
free.
This year’s event is tentatively
scheduled for Friday-
Sunday, June 3-5, with food,
music and community events
adding to the fun.
Organized by the
draws more than 5,000 visitors
and features multiple
launches of about a dozen hot
air balloons throughout the
weekend. It is exciting for
both new and returning spectators
to see these majestic
balloons rise into the sky and
float through the surrounding
countryside.
Launches take place at
weather and wind permitting.
Between the launches, the
Cambridge community has
traditionally rolled out the
red carpet, providing myriad
activities, including in years
past a block party and candlestick
glow on Main Street followed
by a fireworks display.
The candlestick glow is a
magical vision of balloon baskets
with their burners lit.
If festivals from previous
years are any indication, this
year’s will showcase local
food producers and restaurants;
offer a craft fair, farmers’
market, museum tour,
concerts and more; and feature
the annual Moon Glow, a
spectacular evening display
of hot air balloons illuminated
from within that light up
in rhythm to music provided
by a DJ.

“Sponsors are crucial to
the success of the balloon festival.
They make it possible
for the event to occur free of
charge,” said festival co-chair
Lisa Pembroke. “We couldn’t
do it without them!”
Sponsorship opportunities
range from smaller donations
to the sponsorship of an
entire balloon with benefits
that may include free rides
along with free tickets to pilot
events.
The event also is funded by
sales of official Balloon
Festival merchandise, including
T-shirts, mugs and more.
Since 1966, New Skete has
been a peaceful presence in
southern Washington County.
The Eastern Orthodox monks
and nuns of New Skete strive
to worship authentically and
intensely and share with the
broader community their
efforts to translate the essentials
of early Christian
monasticism into American
culture.
In 1967 the monks cleared
the steep and rocky land on
the mountain to begin building
their monastery. Today,
in addition to the monks’ private
living quarters, there are
classrooms, a gift shop, two
guest rooms and two parlors.
The nuns of New Skete
arrived in 1969 and built their
monastery about four miles
west of the monks’ on
Ashgrove Road. Their monastery
includes a kitchen, bedrooms,
dining area, community
rooms, a small chapel for
daily services, an art studio,
guest areas, library, workshops
and bakery, along with
a tiny gift shop for the sale of
the nuns’ famous cheesecakes,
seasonal brandied
fruitcakes and other treats.
Explore monastic life at New Skete
In 1983 the community of
the Companions of New
Skete, a fellowship of lay people
who seek to be formally
connected with the New Skete
communities to deepen their
spiritual lives, built Emmaus
House on the monks’ land,
and it now serves as the
monks’ main guest house.
New Skete has two churches
at the monks’ monastery.
The first, a small temple
distinctive gold cupolas or
1969 and is dedicated to the
Transfiguration of Christ. A
larger church dedicated to
Holy Wisdom was built in
1983 by the monks and local
carpenters to accommodate
the monastic communities,
local parishioners and the
growing number of retreatants
and visitors.
The nuns of New Skete make cheesecakes that ‘give new meaning to the term heavenly.’
All are welcome to join the
monks and nuns in worship.
The divine services at New
Skete are the single most
important work of the members
in common. They are
sung for the spiritual benefit
of all who participate in them
and for all who are commemorated
during their celebrations.
Two important aspects are
immediately obvious to the
listener. First, most of the
priest’s prayers are sung
aloud for all to hear. Second,
all the services have been
translated into contemporary
American literary English.
As with the layout, design,
and furnishing of the church
building, both music, and
texts, and the structure and
movement, of the liturgical
services, form an integral
whole. Every element of it
must help lead the worshipper
to a further experience of
the presence of Christ in our
midst.
munities at New Skete are
self-supporting and receive no
financial support from the
national church. They are
sustained financially through
charitable donations and the
work of their own hands. The
communities, since their
founding, have worked in
liturgical arts, producing
icons and publishing liturgical
books and music. In addition,
the monks are world-famous
for breeding German
Shepherds and their dog
training programs, whereas
the nuns are known for their
heavenly cheesecakes.
The monks’ love for their
first German Shepherd dog
Kir led them to begin breeding,
raising and socializing
these intelligent and beautiful
animals. Today, the monks of
New Skete dedicate themselves
to providing the best
possible companion dogs.
Based on their experience
and expertise, the monks
have written extensively on
the relationship of dogs and
people. They also offer a
course of dog training that
includes standard AKC obedience
and incorporates the values
of the monastic environment.
“The cheesecakes made by
the Nuns of New Skete are,
dare we say, divine? They
give new meaning to the term
heavenly,” said an article in
Food pantry provides sustenance for body and spirit
Affiliated with the Regional Food
Bank of Northeastern New York, the
Cambridge Food Pantry and Christian
Outreach Center offers food from the
four major food groups as well as paper
supplies to those in need.
Each week, approximately 30 volunteers
pick up groceries, stock shelves
and serve anywhere from 120 to 150 families
in the Cambridge Central School
District.
No one who visits the pantry will ever
leave hungry. Even if an individual or
family is not from within the pantry’s
distribution area, staff will provide food
and assistance in accessing a food pantry
in their home area if possible.
In the face of Covid-19, the food pantry
has made a few changes in the way it
distributes goods to recipients. These
days, cars pull into the driveway, a tally
is made of family members and staff fill
food boxes and load them into the trunks
of recipients’ cars.
In addition to providing food through
the pantry, the organization’s backpack
program for students in kindergarten
through 12th grade provides breakfast
and lunch for weekends and during
vacations when needy students are not
receiving breakfast or lunch at school.
The food pantry’s weekly Friday community
lunch program and Code Blue
affiliation are not currently in operation.
Since 2015, the Code Blue site had provided
a warm shelter for those who were
homeless or had inadequate heating
during the winter’s coldest nights.
Pantry hours are Wednesdays from 1
p.m. to 3 p.m., Fridays from 4 p.m. to 6
