No, No, No. Not that kind of tale!!!
I’m talking about dogs in the bedroom…something
that was never on my wish list. My bedroom was
my sanctuary, whereas Gary was all for sharing. It’s
a personal choice and I know some of you will be
horrified at the thought, while others wonder what
all the fuss is about. Anyhow, I was overruled and
now share my bedroom (and King size bed) with
three hairy, annoying and often smelly males.
The dogs do have their own beds – and they usually
start the night sleeping in them. But once we’re
fast asleep, with the stealth of a cat burglar, they
climb onto the bed. Quite often one of us will wake
up unable to move our legs. After establishing that
we’re not paralysed from the waist down, we try and
shift them. No matter how much you try they won’t
budge. How they become twice the weight at night
is a mystery.
Just to be clear, they are not allowed actually in the
bed. Come on, we do have some standards! So how
is it that when I get a rare opportunity to actually
stretch my legs out, all I can feel is grit? Having
sand between my toes when I’m not on a beach isn’t
great.
To be fair, 80% of the time they are no problem.
They find a gap, get in it and everyone sleeps
happily ever after. Apart from when they don’t.
That’s when the fun starts.
It becomes a battle of the wills. Who can fake sleep
the longest and ignore the scratching at the door,
the tippy tappy claws as they trot around the room,
the paws on the arms, the quiet barking that gets
louder and louder.
The
Bedroom
Tale
To be fair, I am pretty good at it and usually win.
Fake snoring and a bit of sleep talking usually
does the trick. I can hear Gary huffing and puffing
and eventually, because he is basically a kind and
conscientious pet owner and I am not, he gets up
and takes them down to the garden. The finale
to my performance is to act really surprised the
following morning when Gary is moaning and
cussing. Like you didn’t hear a thing…
As for romance, forget it. Having a hairy mutt giving
you evils is about as big a passion killer as you can
get. Not always a bad thing…
Now let’s talk about bones. Raw, bloody, grotty
bones. We used to give the dogs the occasional
bone as a treat. A normal dog would take his bone
off and spend hours gnawing away at it in doggy
bliss.
Not Herbie. He has no idea what to do with it, so
he panics and buries it outside. Then hours later it
turns up. Under Gary’s pillow. Raw meat, caked in
soil. Who wouldn’t want that waiting for them when
they go to bed?
We do like to have the odd weekend away in a dog
friendly cottage. The only problem is that often
these little places only have a double bed – so by
the end of the night one of us has usually rolled
off the edge and the other one feels like they have
gone ten rounds with Tyson Fury. The dogs are fine
though. Well rested and raring to go. And the way
they look at you…like, what’s all the fuss about??
Just tickle my belly and stop moaning.
NatWest bank on the
junction between
Mansfield Road and Hucknall
Road bordering Mapperley
Park, Masala Junction offers
both home style and modern
Indian dining in a building full
of history and character.
Naj Aziz bought the bank in
2015, and with the help of
architect sister-in-law Lyn
Niblock-Aziz, transformed
the building into the stunning
restaurant it is today.
With over 30 years experience
and a string of award winning
restaurants behind the family,
it’s no surprise Masala Junction
won the accolade Best
Independent Neighbourhood
Venue at the last Nottingham
Bar & Restaurant Awards
and previously, Winner of
Best Indian Restaurant at the
Nottinghamshire Food and
Drink Awards.
The menu is a reflection of
the Aziz’s love of fine Indian
home cooking and offers a
very warm insight to the food
scene from their origins of
Kashmir. “Simple dishes with
fresh ingredients, wonderfully
cooked by my mother are
a vivid memory.” says Naj
Aziz and it’s this inspired
style of cooking that we
were delighted to sample in
the Junction Goat Ka Salan
dish – a family recipe that
the Aziz brothers enjoyed
whilst growing up to celebrate
special occasions.
The menu is carefully curated
to satisfy every taste, beside
the home style and modern
Indian fare, sit delicious meat
alternatives such as Mattar
Soya Keema, a traditional dish
with a modern vegan twist.
The vegan and vegetarian
dishes are clearly not an after
thought here. Our starters,
the Carrot and Beet cutlets
(pictured) and Avocado
Golgappas are deliciously
crisp, beautifully presented
and spiced to perfection.
The wine list, crafted by
and reflects careful and ideal
at Masala Junction.
Stuffed!
Stuffi ng has been around since at least
Roman times. The cook book ‘Apicus
de re Coquinaria’ has recipes for
stuffi ng made from vegetables, herbs,
nuts and offal and it was used to stuff
chicken, pigs and even dormouse!
Since the late 1800’s in America it is
called ‘dressing’. This stems from the
way it was cooked at Thanksgiving,
outside the bird rather than in the cavity.
Stuffi ng was also deemed too crude a
term for the well to do.
The great thing about stuffi ng is that
you can stuff pretty much anything with
pretty much anything! From chicken
(see Kiev recipe opposite) to seafood
and most vegetables. But also thinking
outside the box you can hollow out
a loaf of bread, stuff it and you have
the perfect picnic food. It isn’t just for
savoury fi llings either. You can stuff
pancakes, cookies, cupcakes, apples
and the list goes on...
Stuffi ng as a method of cooking is used
across the globe. From Greek stuffed
vine leaves to Indian stuffed paratha to
the Russian pirozhki (stuffed bread). If
you think about it every country has a
speciality that involves stuffi ng. How
about a Cornish pasty? Or an Italian
Calzone? Or a Japanese gyoza? We
love to stuff everything!
My absolute favourite has to be sage
and onion. Not the dry stuff you get
from a packet, but homemade with
grated onion, dried sage, breadcrumbs,
sausagemeat and an egg. I bake it in a
dish and could eat it all day.
Stuff ed Squash with
Blue Cheese /Serves 2
1 butternut squash
200g blue cheese – crumbled
30g pine nuts – toasted
2 echalion shallots – sliced
1 tbsp thyme leaves
250g sachet cooked rice/grains
Salt & pepper
Knob of butter
Method
Heat the oven to 200°C. Line a baking tray.
Half the squash, scoop out the seeds and
stringy bits. Score the fl esh and rub with
olive oil. Season and put a knob of butter
in the cavity of each half. Bake in oven for
45 – 90 mins depending on the size of your
squash.
In a small pan with a splash of oil, slowly
cook the onion until soft and slightly crispy.
Allow to cool.
Meanwhile – put 150g of the cheese in a
bowl, along with 20g of the toasted pine
nuts, the rice or grains. Add the cooled
onion. Once the squash is soft, remove
from the oven, scoop out most of the fl esh
and add to the bowl. Mix well and check
seasoning. Once well combined, spoon
back into the squash shells. Top with
remaining cheese and pine nuts and put
back in the oven for 15 mins until the top is
brown and bubbling.
This is a meal in itself and needs nothing to
accompany it, although some broccoli or a
green salad wouldn’t go amiss.
Chicken Kiev /Serves 4
4 chicken breasts – boneless & skinless
75g unsalted butter
2 cloves garlic – crushed
½ lemon – zested
2 tbsp parsley – chopped
½ tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
75g fl our – add a tsp paprika (optional)
2 eggs – beaten
150g breadcrumbs – add parmesan (optional)
Sunfl ower oil for shallow frying
Method
First make the garlic butter. Mix together the butter,
garlic, lemon zest, parsley, salt & pepper. Place in cling
fi lm, shape into a cylinder & freeze for about 20 mins.
Meanwhile get 3 shallow bowls ready. One with fl our,
one with beaten egg & one with breadcrumbs. Heat
oven to 200°C. Then prep the chicken. The aim is to
stop the garlic butter leaking out while the chicken is
cooking. You can google YouTube videos on how to
do it. I used a really sharp knife and made a thumb
size pocket in the thick end of the breast. Be careful
not to break through the bottom. Once the garlic
butter is hard, slice it and use it to stuff the cavity
in the breast. Use cocktail sticks to seal shut. Then
toss the breast in fl our, then egg, then breadcrumbs,
making sure they are well covered.
Heat the sunfl ower oil in a frying pan until a little
crumb sizzles. Fry chicken for 3 mins on each side,
until golden. Transfer to a baking tray lined with
greaseproof paper. Bake in oven for 20 mins or until
cooked through. Hopefully the butter will still be inside
the breast. If you get any leakage simply spoon back
over the breast to make it even crispier. Delicious
served with a green salad and new potatoes.
3 Habits that will improve
your health quickly
Something I’ve been working on with our team
since the start of the new year is how creating
small habits can have a great outcome.
I’m going to give you a quick rundown on how
you can turn the tables, get back on track and
see quick, positive results.
SLEEP
Yes, sleep…. it drastically affects so much more
than just how tired you feel.
We require 7-8 hours a night to optimally recover
our bodies.
Yet most of us get less than 6, due to social
media, watching telly late into the evening or just
having a poor bedtime routine.
If you get 7-8 hours of actual, good quality sleep
it’s not just your tiredness that you’ll see improve.
You will be less stressed, your mood will be
better and your brain will be sharper. There is also
evidence that it can improve your overall health.
NUTRITION
The quality of what we put into our bodies is so
important. It is so much more than simply eating
what we fancy (although there is also a place
for this!)
As with sleep, you can change how well your
body responds to food in a short time. The
benefits of eating more mindfully can have many
positive effects apart from just weight loss.
Energy improves, skin improves, mood improves
along with all kinds of good things that go off
inside the body.
If you were to change just 2 things for a
MAXIMUM positive outcome that will change
things within 7 days…. SLEEP and NUTRITION Serves are 2
super fast at responding.
HYDRATION
Notice I didn’t mention exercise? That’s because ½ lemon, juiced
salt & pepper
exercise is a long game played daily. HYDRATION,
chopped
like sleep and nutrition can again, quickly
improve how your body functions and how fast 19
you produce results.
Good hydration starts with around 2 litres of
water (yes, just water) daily. Combine this with
Serves 2
the other habits and you’re well on your way to
improving your all-round health in less than 7 days.
Take these up long term and the benefits could
be life changing.
Add in a little movement and… you’ve got an
entirely different life.
Good health doesn’t need to be complicated.
By creating these three simple (4 if you want to
move more) habits, you will change so much
more than how you look in a mirror.
Simple checklist:
Sleep = 7-8 hours daily
Nutrition = eat the rainbow
Hydration = start at 2 litres of water daily
(movement) = keep it simple. 8-10k steps a day is
more than enough to start to see change.
Libra, Aquarius, Gemini
(Knight of Cups, Strength, The Empress)
Whatever ~love mission~ you’ve been on recently,
the Knight of Cups and The Empress are going to
bring you your heart’s desire. If it’s a new beau
then expect the very best (maybe a water sign
or a Libran or Taurean), if it’s a heart to heart or
rekindling of passion with your current beau, then
it’ll happen, if it’s feeling more self love and care
for yourself then that will unfold too. Take the fi rst
step and let the cosmos do the rest. Strength
shows that this has been a testing time for you and
you’ve handled it well. You’ve shown resilience,
courage and all of this hardship and trial will
now pay off in you entering into a glorious and
rewarding relationship phase.
Earth signs
Capricorn, Virgo,
Taurus
(Page of Wands, Five of Coins,
The Lovers)
It’s been a funny old time for you, and you’re
all mixed up and emotional. Let’s sort it out!
The Lovers sees you feeling confl icted / torn
about something close to your heart- you
need to admit what it is and clarify the
options and how you feel. The Five of Coins
sees you worrying about things fading, dying
or diminishing in your life. you’re worried about
what you’ll lose, more than what you’d gain.
The Page of Wands asks you to kickstart that
switch by doing things which enliven you,
energise you, make you happy. lift the mood,
boost the vibe and address this.
Fire signs
Leo, Aries, Sagittarius
(The Hermit, Page of Cups, Ace of Cups)
This trio of cards combine to make me think of
self love and self care. The Hermit is all about
taking your needs and your life seriously, and
withdrawing from others’ drama to refl ect and
nurture yourself. The Page and Ace of Cups
are loving, kind, compassionate cards about
activating a new chapter of self love and care,
tlc for yours truly. Indulge, relax, journal, create,
seek solitude, make your space cosy, go to bed
super early, read, clear your mind, meditate,
bathe, walk, eat and drink well.Clear your
psyche and enthuse and enliven your spirits.
Water signs
Scorpio
(The Wheel of Fortune, Ten of Cups,
The Fool)
Wow, your relationship landscape is set for all
kinds of transformation- are you ready? The
Wheel of Fortune means change is afoot, some
under your control, some not. The Fool means
new people are going to enter your life, possibly
Aries, and they are going to really impact your
outlook and feelings. It could, as signalled by the
happy-ever-after Ten of Cups, be your own love
of a lifetime, a close friend, a long-lost family
member, or just someone with a point of view
that changes how you feel about something
else.
YOUNG PEOPLE’S CARE SERVICE URGENTLY NEEDS CREATIVE PEOPLE
TO JOIN THEIR TEAM
by FTM Dance
Children
and young
people with
additional
needs in Notts
risk losing
out on vital
services if
more paid
carers are not recruited to help with their essential care.
FTM Dance is a provider of respite care through performing
arts classes, offering support for families of children and
young adults with additional needs and diverse abilities
across Nottinghamshire. Its unique proactive care model
not only gives families much needed respite time but their
fun dance and drama sessions promote physical and social
skills and enable creative expression, enhancing wellbeing
and promoting independence for the participants.
It currently supports over 100 children across the county
and employs carers for its creative classes but needs more
to support increasing local need.
Leanne Evans, FTM Dance Founder and Director, said: “We
hear about the crisis in care sector recruitment daily in the news
and it’s a critical problem. It’s not just care homes for the elderly
that are lacking vital support. Day services, respite care and
many more care environments also urgently need additional
paid people.”
“The bottom line is we need more staff urgently to be able
to continue our crucial services and say yes to more local
families, their children and the young people who need our
support.”
How police keep thousands safe on nights out
From dealing with drunken fights
to hen parties asking for a ‘selfie’,
policing Nottingham’s night-time
economy swings and fluctuates like no
other shift.
One minute officers find themselves
engaging with excited groups on a fun
night out. The next they are bundling a
suspect into the back of a police van
following a violent incident at a nearby bar.
They are long shifts – 8pm to 6am on a
Saturday night – and the all-embracing
aim of the policing teams is to ensure
people can enjoy a safe night out.
Occasionally this will require taking
someone into custody. But most of the
time officers will simply be patrolling
the streets, engaging with revellers and
providing help and assistance where
needed.
It’s why Sergeant Richard Tiernan, of the
city centre neighbourhood policing team,
enjoys policing the night-time economy.
“Ultimately it’s policing in its purest form,”
he said. “You’re out there and doing
what you joined up for, which is keeping
people safe.
“People have perceptions of what
policing the night-time economy is like
but you do get some rewarding jobs. The
other night we talked someone down
from the roof of a car park who was
having a mental health crisis.”
An estimated 40,000 people descend
on Nottingham every weekend to
enjoy the city’s nightlife and a mix of
Nottinghamshire Police teams are
tasked with keeping them safe.
Working to a rota, the weekend nighttime
team consists of up to 15 police
constables, two sergeants and one
inspector, but there are also response
officers, armed officers and the dog unit
on standby, ready to deal with any major
incidents.
Managing the night-time economy
involves a huge amount of planning
and Nottinghamshire Police works in
partnership with many organisations
including Nottingham City Council,
East Midlands Ambulance Service,
St John’s Ambulance, the University
of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent
University to keep revellers safe.
Police also work with door staff,
pub managers, street pastors and
community protection officers employed
by the council.
But regardless of how much planning
and work goes into policing the nighttime
economy, much will depend on
the weather gods. Rain means revellers
will go straight home, but dry weather
means they will remain in the city after
the pubs and clubs have closed.
Nottinghamshire Police is also
continuing to encourage local residents
to sign up to Nottinghamshire Alert so
they can have direct engagement with
the force and its partners around issues
that matter to them.
your guide to choosing a stairlift
by Sarah Mawer - Priority Stairlifts
Sarah, Customer Care Manager
We know the
decision to have a
stairlift installed
is often a very
difficult one to
make, but when
compared with
the alternative of
moving, or only
living on one level
of their home,
many people have
found a stairlift to
be their preferred
solution.
The idea of deciding which stairlift is right for you,
and having it fitted, can be a very daunting one so, to
guide you through the process, these simple steps
should be helpful.
• Firstly, approach your local authority – you may be
eligible for a grant to help towards the cost.
• Obtain two or three different quotes and think
about choosing a local supplier who would be able
to get to you quickly in the event of a breakdown.
It’s also very important to check reviews on Google
and other reputable sites.
• Arrange a survey – most companies can give you
a price over the phone and you should NEVER feel
pressured into making a decision.
• All stairlifts are fitted to the stairs rather than the
wall of the staircase, so you needn’t worry about
having to sort out any decorating work. They are all
powered from the mains and come with a battery
backup in case of a power failure.
• Do you want a new, reconditioned or rental
stairlift? Most companies offer a range of options
to suit your budget and needs.
• Do you need a straight or curved one? If your
stairs go straight up with no bends, you need a
straight stairlift. If your staircase has a bend, you
will need a curved one.
• Check out the aftercare and warranty – ask if your
supplier has a 24hr call out and what the response
time would be.
• A written quotation will be provided for the cost
of the stairlift, including installation. You may be
exempt from paying VAT, so check if you’re eligible.
• Once you have decided on your preferred supplier,
the installation process is very simple. Most
stairlifts can be installed within 5 working days
(some even next day) and the installation takes
between 1-4hrs depending on the type. You will be
given a thorough demonstration once it’s fitted and
the engineer won’t leave until you are comfortable
using it.
Your husband or wife does not automatically inherit the whole of your Estate
on your death. If you are an unmarried couple (whether or not it’s a same-sex
relationship), you can make sure your partner is provided for in the event of
your death.
By making a Will, YOU decide who inherits your estate
If you do not make a Will there are certain rules which dictate how your estate
will be divided and this may not be the way that you would like or expect it
to be distributed.
You can choose your Executors (who are the people who will deal with your
Estate), appoint Guardians for any minor children and decide at what age you
would like your children/grandchildren to inherit as well as so much more.
Making a Will does not have to be a frightening experience and it is our
intention to make this process as easy and stress free as possible. We are
here to listen and advise you accordingly as to your wishes so you can forget
about this issue and enjoy your life.
Magazine
Deadline:
4 May
Age UK Nottingham & Nottinghamshire has
launched a new scams prevention and support
programme for older people in Nottinghamshire.
The programme, funded by Lloyds Banking Group,
will help to prevent older people from falling for
scams by increasing their knowledge and confidence
to recognise and deal with attempted scams. It will
also provide support to older fraud victims recovering
after an incident.
Older people can be particularly vulnerable to fraud
and scams, which can have a serious emotional and
financial impact, and can damage quality of life and
wellbeing for many.
Sophisticated scams have been on the rise during the
pandemic with criminals devising even more ways to
target those they believe to be vulnerable. This means
it’s even more vital to support those that may be at
greater risk.
To find out more about Age UK Nottingham &
Nottinghamshire’s Scams Prevention and Support
Programme, please contact the Safe & Sound
team on 0115 8599 209 or email safeandsound@
Age UK Nottingham & Nottinghamshire provides
a wide range of services for older people from all
communities and backgrounds in Nottingham and
Nottinghamshire. Find out more at Welcome to Age
Spring Flowering
Favourites
After a long winter it’s
wonderful to walk around
my garden and see signs
of my spring flowering
favourites getting busy for
a wonderful show.
Ajuga, (common name, bugle)
has kept looking good through
the winter but now the rosettes
of leaves are looking fresh and
glossy and I’m just waiting for
the first short spikes of blue
flowers to emerge. These are
unassuming plants that spread,
noninvasively, by sending out
runners much like strawberry
plants do creating ground
hugging clumps. They do
well in some shade but aren’t
that fussy. My favourites are
the bronze-leaved types like
“Atropurpurea”, the darker
“Black Scallop” and the reddish
“Burgundy Glow.” The flower
spikes are short and neat about
6in / 15cm tall. Larger and
more impressive is “Caitlin’s
Giant”. Ajuga are easy to grow
and propagate as the runners
root easily. They don’t seem
to suffer from any pests or
diseases.
Another tough and
accommodating spring flowerer
is lungwort (Pulmonaria). The
name comes from the belief in
the past that the spotted leaves
of some species resembled
the inside of a lung. Another
common name, army and navy,
is given because the wild plants
bear both blue and reddish
flowers at once, harking back
to the military uniform colours
of the time. Whatever the
name, the flowers are loved
by early flying bees. The plants
grow in sun or part shade and
prefer moisture. They do seed
a bit and are best cut back
really hard after flowering
as the leaves can be tatty
and sometimes get a bit of
powdery mildew. They soon
grow fresh, healthy leaves after
this treatment. Good varieties
include the vivid “Blue Ensign”,
the paler “Opal” and the pink
flowered “Mawson’s Red” or
“Dora Bielefeld”. One of my
favourites is “Cotton Cool”,
with almost completely silvered
leaves that makes a wonderful
foliage plant through the year.
Another lovely spring-flowering
foliage plant is Brunnera, a
relative of borage and equally
good for bees. The clumps
of heart-shaped leaves are
crowned with forget-me-not
like blue or sometimes white
flowers. Modern varieties have
introduced incredible silvered
leaves, either netted with silver
lines as in “Jack Frost” (blue
flowers) and “Mr. Morse” (white
flowers) or almost entirely
silver like “Looking Glass”. They
are best cut back hard in early
summer to encourage fresh,
new leaves.
Spring in the perennial garden
is truly something worth
waiting for with lots of easy to
grow flowers to perk up your
plots and beautify your borders.
new highway code rules for 2022
Courtesy of Link Magazines
The Highway Code has received a refresh, with
a new set of rules coming into force from 29th
January 2022. As well as some 49 existing laws
having been updated, new rules will be introduced.
The changes are extensive and further information
is available on the website link located at the
bottom of this article. However, the key areas are
summarised below.
Hierarchy of road users
Previously The Highway Code stated all road users
should be considerate towards each other, applying
this principle to pedestrians and drivers equally. It
meant that equal responsibility was originally placed
on all road users for assuring the safety of others.
The new hierarchy places responsibility on road
users who could do greatest harm to others, and it
is with them that the greatest obligation to protect
the most vulnerable on the road now lies. Top of
the hierarchy are lorry drivers, cars, vans, buses and
motorcycles. But it should be noted that cyclists,
horse riders and horse-drawn carriage drivers have
a greater responsibility to reduce the danger posed
to pedestrians.
Pedestrian priorities at junctions
Prior to the rule change, road users would have given
way to pedestrians who have started to cross the
road into which they are turning.
Under the new rules priority must be given to
pedestrians who are waiting to cross the road, which
means that if you are about to turn into a road and a
pedestrian is waiting to cross, you should give way.
New rule for drivers and motorcyclists at junctions
The new rule states that when turning into or out of
a junction, drivers should not cut across the path of
any other road user, including cyclists, horse riders
or horse-drawn vehicles, if doing so would cause the
other road-user to slow down, stop or swerve.
Safe passing distances
An amendment to existing Rule 163 sets out safe
passing distances for drivers when overtaking
cyclists, motorcyclists, horse riders and those in
horse-drawn carriages.
Drivers must give at least a 1.5 metre space when
overtaking a cyclist at speeds of up to 30mph. More
space should be allowed when overtaking at speeds
of more than 30mph. Rule 72 establishes the right
for cyclists to ride in the centre of their lane, to
ensure that they remain visible.
When passing a pedestrian who is walking in the
road, drivers should allow at least two metres of
space and maintain a low speed.
Rule 213 has also changed and now states that on
narrow sections of roads, horse riders may ride in
the centre of the lane and drivers should allow them
to do so for their own safety, to ensure they can see
and be seen. Drivers should pass a horse at least 2
metres distance and at a slow speed.
In all cases, drivers will now have to wait behind
a motorcyclist, cyclist, horse rider, horse-drawn
vehicle or pedestrian and not overtake if it is unsafe
or not possible to meet these clearances. Extra
care should be taken in poor weather, including high
winds.
Tim Saunders is an advanced
motorist and journalist. He
has always been passionate
about motoring and regularly
reviews cars from the leading
manufacturers. His Youtube
channel videos have been watched
boost his subscribers from 300 to over 1,000.
His first report on a BMW 520i was
published in the Dorset Echo when he
was 17 (just after passing his driving
test) in 1995. He went on to become
business and motoring editor at the
Bournemouth Echo. Now, his engaging
and informative reviews are published
I sit inside the VW Tiguan
where even the heating is
operated through swiping.
Save me. You have to be
precise with this stuff
otherwise it just won’t work.
This is a problem when
driving because you really
have to focus on this rather
than devoting 100 per cent
attention to the road. And
that is not good. My wife has
to deal with it for me. There
is such a thing as driving
without due care and
attention, you know.
In Hampshire alone deaths caused
by drivers using mobile phones
include a school crossing patrol
and a cyclist, the latter happened
to be one of my wife’s students.
We all do well to remember that
cars are killing machines. The
more basic the vehicle the better it
is, I believe.
Inside the nearly £33,000 Tiguan
I curse how technology continues
to take us all over while Ken Dodd
sings Happiness, oh happiness.
It’s the first time I’ve actually
listened to this song all the way
through; I really should have
done that before I spoke to him a
few years ago. I smile. How true,
that success in life should be
measured by happiness instead
of money.
There are some good things about
this sports utility vehicle. The
wheel base is wide enough to
evade the irritating speed humps
on some of the local roads to my
dentist... The raised height is
helpful and it’s an attractive car
from the outside helped by the
chrome edged windows although
this doesn’t quite match up on the
passenger side. There’s a large
panoramic glass sunroof; the roof
slides open above the front seats
and this roof is similar to the one in
the £201,000 Bentley Flying Spur.
The 7-speed DSG automatic can
be driven like a manual thanks
to paddleshifts either side of the
steering wheel. But for me this
isn’t comparable to a traditional
manual; it’s lazy driving that takes
away the fun of making those gear
changes.
This 1.5-litre VW returns 42mpg
over the course of the test. The
Tiguan’s numberplate ends in
BFF. Best Friend Forever my
daughters reliably inform me. No,
unfortunately it is not for me.
When all is said and done I
struggle with being told that we
must behave in a certain way
and then discover that few are
Watch the video review at www.testdrives.biz
actually doing so. This goes for
both Covid and the environment.
There are petrol engines that
are really efficient and surely
these are the ones that should
be being used in cars now. If
it is not possible to have both
performance and efficiency then
surely manufacturers must make
the right choice.
“I like this car,” pipes up Harriett
(10). “It’s comfortable. I like the
fact that there are five seats and it
looks nice.” That’s me told.
trends
by Gliderobes
With many of us
still spending
more time
at home it’s
given us all an
opportunity
to access our
needs in the
home. For that
clutter free,
practical living good storage solutions seem to be top of
everyone’s list this year – especially in the bedroom.
Jonathan Ryder, Product Designer at Gliderobes shares
his tips on bedroom storage and colour trends for Spring
2022.
In small areas you need to be clever in terms of storage
solutions, décor and lighting to create the illusion of space
and make the most of the area you have.
The obvious storage solution in bedrooms are wardrobes
but do think about investing in bespoke sliding wardrobes
which can be made to measure to your exact needs.
At Gliderobes unlike other suppliers we don’t use
standard door sizes, ‘your’ wardrobe is made to ‘your’
exact size. The wardrobe interior, just like the exterior
is fully customisable too so we can ensure flexibility and
functionality.
You will need to
consider the amount
of shelving or drawers
to hanging space,
remember drawers
look good but they take
up more room than
shelving or hanging
space compared to what they can actually store.
When you’re going through your check list of storage
needs, don’t forget about integrated lighting – a feature
available both internally and externally, these lights can be
remote control or on sensors and easily rechargeable with
a USB port
To draw the eye around the room, use wardrobe doors
which have horizontal decorative spilt bars this will
enhance the proportions of the space and making the
room feel much wider.
If you use various shades of the same colour this can
visibly expand the space too, and of course using mirrors
and reflective surfaces like glass will reflect light back into
the room, again making the space seem bigger.
Over recent years wooden headboards have dominated
the key look in bedrooms over but in 2021 upholstery is
back. So have the best of both with our made to measure
wood and upholstered headboards. And once you’re
tucked up in bed, you’ll need to keep everything within
arm’s reach with our matching bedside tables.
For a warm, cosy feel indulge yourself in textures and
sumptuous colours like rich creams and caramels. They’ll
make your bedroom elegant but for a sense of well-being
in your personal space use soft pastel colours for a fresh
look that will ease and re-energise the senses.
Team uplifting
shades of green,
lilac and pink
with natural
materials such
as wood, glass
and luscious
greenery which
will help you create a balanced and peaceful bedroom.
Our showroom is full of inspirational ideas and stylish
displays where you can see for yourself the huge range of
options available. Of course, our friendly sales team will
be on hand to help you or alternatively our website has a
user friendly, state of the art online configurator where you
can design and price your own wardrobe.
Better still all our furniture is manufactured from quality
raw materials in our very own factory based in Derbyshire.
So, take control of your bedroom and keep clutter at bay
with a Gliderobes bespoke fitted wardrobes and furniture.
THERE’S MORE GOING ON IN KIMBERLEY THAT YOU MIGHT THINK!
by Neil Doherty
Kimberley is a thriving community, with its wide
range of shops, fantastic pub to people ratio,
cafes, and green spaces.
The pace of life has been slower recently, due to two
years of covid restrictions but even so, behind the
scenes the Town Council and local volunteers have
been focussed on making our town a better place.
Not just the things you would expect from a Town
Council, arranging flowers on Main Street, running
the Parish Hall, maintenance of the recreation
facilities in the town, although there’s been plenty
of that, from repairs to play equipment at the Stag
Recreation Ground, renovating the beautiful old
ironwork along the old Great Northern Railway
Line, and getting funding to plant native trees on
Knowle Park and the Stag Recreation Ground. We’ve
provided grant funding to local groups such as the
Scouts and Rainbows, and helped with the set-up of
a new pétanque pitch at the Stag Ground.
We’ve also organised the installation of new
defibrillators in the old phone box at Cliff Boulevard,
outside the White Lion on Swingate and outside the
Parish Hall on Newdigate.
There’s been plenty of focus on fun activities as
well, involving lots of local volunteers. There was a
fantastic Halloween event for younger children at
the end of October, featuring a Halloween disco and
a spooky ghost walk along the old railway line, and
the annual Christmas Lights switch-on event, where
many of you will remember the amazing fireworks
after Santa arrived on his sleigh. And more seriously,
the Council organises our very well attended
Remembrance Day ceremony each year.
In February, over Valentine’s weekend, Kimberley
hosted the UK’s first ever Valentine’s Festival, with
amazing lights and lasers across the town centre,
‘love fireworks’ each night, and brilliant live music
acts in most of the pubs and restaurants. There
were ‘Love Trees’ to leave romantic messages,
and a Love Wall to project a giant message to your
loved one! The idea was to boost local hospitality
businesses during the winter months as they recover
from Covid, and the whole event was a brilliant
success.
And there are lots of things to look forward to in
2022, as – hopefully – life gets back to normal.
Coming soon, the Town Council is planning for a
Beacon Lighting event on Thursday 2nd June, and
the return of the popular Picnic in the Park on Friday
3rd June, to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
If you want to get involved let us know, we’re always
looking for more volunteers. Find out more at
kimberley-tc.gov.uk or the Kimberley Town Council
Facebook page.
Welcome to my windowsill... by Gloria Morgan
Growing on my windowsill, I have a number of pot
plants that have accompanied me wherever I have
lived over the past 40-odd years. They are forgiving
plants – all they ask for is sunlight and a drink of
water.
If the word “papyrus” caught your eye, it is because
the other predominant use of this plant was by the
ancient Egyptians who produced a type of paper
from it, upon which many of their documents were
inscribed.
They are not showy. Their colour is a uniform dark
green. They produce tall stems, each topped with a
cluster of thin, finger-like leaves, which makes them
look like a pot full of rather tatty green feather dusters.
To be honest, they don’t do much. They don’t produce
lots of pretty blooms in interesting colours. If you
search about diligently you might occasionally find
a scrappy little brownish flower lurking, but that has
been enough to keep the plants going, year in, year
out.
To me, the real interest in these plants is the way
they propagate themselves. They are the ultimate
proponents of the concept of “up-side-down”.
If you wanted a cutting from one of mine, I would snip
off a stalk near the soil, up-end it and place it in a tall
container with the ball of leaves at the bottom. Sure
enough, given time, new roots would emerge at the
bottom from what previously were the leaves at the
top of the plant.
This humble occupant of my windowsills can, in
the wild, grow to a height of 5 meters. Its habit of
producing tall stalks that then bend over into the
water and produce new roots from their previous tops,
has enabled this plant to flourish and colonise the
edges of rivers and lakes throughout Africa.
For centuries, its immensely
strong, flexible stems have been
harvested by river-side residents
and put to numerous uses. To
this day, in some parts of the
world, the buoyant stems are
plaited together to construct
small rafts and canoes for
fishing.
So what is this rather odd plant
called? Its full name is Cyperus
papyrus, otherwise known as
Nile River Grass.
Papyrus was made from the stem of the plant. The
coarse, outer rind was removed, and the inner pith
then cut lengthwise into thin strips. These strips
would be placed side by side on a hard surface, and
then another layer of strips would be laid across
them at right angles. The pithy centre of the stems is
sticky, so effectively the two layers were glued to one
another.
The layers would then be pounded together, to mash
them into a single sheet. The sheet would be dried
under pressure, to keep it flat, and then a stone with
rounded corners would be used to polish it until the
surface was smooth to write on.
I love knowing
how the
predecessors of
my windowsill
plants were used.
It is another little
dip into the river of
history that flows
all around us.
greasley MW Bowls Club: roundup
by John Armstrong
including club competitions.
Greasley Miners
Welfare Bowls
Club is now
busy preparing
for the new
outdoor season.
Our fixture list
shows over 60
matches, not
Bowls, along with many other social activities, has
had a difficult time over the past two years. The
constant disruption became a tipping point for many
older players.
Although our club has retained a good number
of members, bringing new players into the game
is crucial. The Eastwood area has an increasing
population and we hope this transfers into increased
participation in local sport.
We know that regular exercise and social contact is
vital to our wellbeing. It is a fact that, for those over
70, regular exercise reduces health problems.
Bowls is not a high profile sport, there is no big
money, just local people enjoying themselves. For
club players there is the added enjoyment of getting
out and about, testing your skills in league and cup
matches.
Our club is part of and enjoys the support of the
Greasley MW Welfare Social Club. We play at
Broxtowe Council’s Coronation Park, Eastwood,
open from May to Late September. Why not give
lawn green bowls a try?
Interested? Please see our details on the website c/o
Tanya About Town
Spring is finally in the
air, and with it comes
a whole host of
things to do around
our county. Here’s
my pick of what’s on
in and around Notts
during April and May.
April of course welcomes Easter,
so expect to see seasonal
activities for the kids popping
up as we get closer. Already
announced is Belvoir Castle’s
half-term family friendly Easter
Adventure (1-8 April). Journey
through Belvoir’s formal gardens,
solving Easter activity puzzles
along the way.
Enjoy an immersive experience in
the woodlands of Rufford Abbey
(8-17 April) as the creatures come
to life for an hour of puppetry,
performers, music and excitement
with an adaptation of the Beatrix
Potter classic Peter Rabbit.
Step into history at Bromley
House Library (2 April) as Times
columnist and Bromley House
Library President, Ann Treneman
hosts a special day in the library
and garden with the team leading
its restoration. They will tell the
history, and why it is exciting
a growing number of garden
historians.
Whether you are a Nottingham
resident or visitor, the multi award
winning Robin Hood Town Tour
is the definitive way to learn all
about the world famous legend
and to find out the best that the
city has to offer (9, 16, 23, 30
April/ 7, 14, 21, 28 May).
Fans of history can also enjoy a
fascinating day out at Britain’s
finest Victorian water works
by visiting a Steaming Day at
Papplewick Pumping Station
(17-18 April/1-2 May) or you
could combine history with a
spot of ghost hunting when
Haunted Heritage investigate
the stunning Holme Pierrepont
Hall (8 April).
There’s plenty of live entertainment
to choose from too, starting
with the Motorpoint Arena.
Experience live entertainment like
never before with Champions
of Magic (2 April) – an evening
of impossible illusions and
spectacular special effects.
Witness a daring escape from
Houdini’s water torture cell, and
levitation high above the stage.
Craig David drops in (7 April)
then The Masked Singer Live
(16 April), an all-new stage
production of the hit tv show
visits with mystery celebrities.
Think you can guess ‘who’s that
behind the mask?’ Don’t miss
it! Dua Lipa visits (26 April)
and May welcomes one of the
most influential bands to emerge
from New York’s punk scene,
Blondie (5 May). I’m looking
forward to this next one - Alan
Partridge brings STRATAGEM,
a live stage show that promises
to inform, educate and entertain
in approximately equal measure
(6/7 May), Little Mix follow (9/10
May) with their ‘Confetti’ tour.
Get LOST IN MUSIC! (13 May)
for a musical journey straight to
the heart of Disco! Relive some of
the greatest songs of all time from
artists such as Donna Summer,
Gloria Gaynor, Earth, Wind & Fire,
Sister Sledge and Chic.
Direct from London’s West
End, A Celebration of George
Michael calls in (14 May), we
then have The Script (24 May)
celebrating a journey that has
included five UK No.1 albums
and six billion streams with the
release of the career-spanning
greatest hits album ‘Tales From
The Script’.
Finally, EM-Con returns for 2022
(28/29 May) with a show that’s
set to be out of this world.
Over at the Royal Concert Hall,
Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story will
be presented live in concert for
the first time in the UK in 2022 (7
April) featuring a screening of the
ground-breaking complete film
with Oscar and Grammy-winning
composer Randy Newman’s
musical score performed live to
the film by the Novello Orchestra.
Next door at the Theatre Royal
they welcome George Orwell’s
world-famous Animal Farm (5-9
April). The fable tells the story of
a revolution and its aftermath.
I can’t claim to be a ballet
connoisseur, but I quite fancy
seeing The Nutcracker when it
visits the Theatre Royal (12-16
April). Adored by critics and
audiences alike. With familysized
helpings of Bourne’s
trademark wit, pathos and
magical fantasy.
The official Strictly Come
Dancing – The Professionals
UK Tour is back (10/22 May) and
direct from the USA, the biggest
and best Elvis show in the
world is also back starring three
‘Ultimate Elvis Tribute’ World
Champions (16 May).
If you fancy seeing behind the
scenes, discover the world
behind the curtain and learn
about the amazing story of
the Theatre Royal and Royal
Concert Hall on their Limelight
Backstage Tour (23 April).
Since starting in Nottingham in
2005 Dot To Dot Festival has
established itself as the UK’s
premier festival for unearthing
the hottest new talent around,
alongside established acts from
all over the globe and it’s back
for 2022 at various venues across
the city (29 May). The festival
has put acts such as The 1975,
Catfish and the Bottlemen,
Mumford & Sons, Florence + The
Machine, Ed Sheeran and The xx
on the map.
Also returning are The Lady
Boys of Bangkok (22-30 April),
in Sneinton Market Square,
featuring 16 of the world’s
most glamorous and beautiful
showgirls...that just happen to
be men! Expect plenty of funfilled
comedy, and outrageous
cheekiness, with over 400
incredible costumes.
Castle Rock Brewery’s annual
(and long overdue) celebration
of beer is back for 2022 (20 - 21
May). Join them in the brewery
yard for a weekend of live music,
great food and good times.
Finally, now here’s something a
bit different – The Red Hot Chilli
Pipers (the most famous bagpipe
band in the world) are playing at
the Albert Hall Nottingham on
Thursday 26 April.

LICORICE PIZZA
NIGHTMARE ALLEY
To say I was excited for Licorice Pizza
would be an understatement. Paul
Thomas Anderson is my favourite
director of all time, so to say that this
film still surpassed my expectations is a
miracle. This film is the director’s loving
ode to San Fernando Valley, where he
grew up and set many of his earlier
works. Much like Quentin Tarantino’s
‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’,
this film does not really have much
of a conventional plot structure to
speak of. It moves at a very odd pace
as it shows scenes with seemingly no
greater place in the narrative beyond
enhancing the characters and themes
of the film, which is exactly why I love
it. Where most directors would have
a very clear-cut plot, this film has a
sprawling, episodic feel that allows it
to relish in the nostalgic atmosphere
present throughout the entire runtime.
Yet it always maintains this dark
undercurrent, something that drives
the two leads together and led me
to further empathise with both main
characters. This was arguably my
favourite new release in years and I
suggest everybody go and watch it!
Writer: Sam Leary 10/10
Nightmare Alley is a visually stunning and
passionately performed return to cinemas for the
director of Pacific Rim, Hellboy and Crimson Peak,
Guillermo Del Toro.
Unfortunately, that is where it ends.
This slick neo-noir follows Stanton Carlisle (Bradley
Cooper) as he escapes a mysterious past straight into
the macabre wonders of a ‘freak-show’. He ingratiates
himself and propels himself onward into troubled
success.
Del Toro excels at crafting a rich, artfully crafted world
that pulls you in, and yet that shiny, art deco facade
is easily chipped. Nightmare Alley is all style and no
substance. It relies on its incredible cinematography
and production design, leaning heavily on fervent
performances from Cooper and Cate Blanchett.
They embody their flawed, unlikeable characters
with an easy authenticity, yet Rooney Mara (Girl with
the Dragon Tattoo) is left will very little to get her
talented teeth into.
Our circus of antagonists blunder from one plot point
to another, with very little in the way of story, never
mind a genuine emotional payoff in the finale. It’s
heavy on metaphors and foreshadowing, preferring
an arthouse ‘show don’t tell’ approach to verbal
exposition, but doesn’t give enough to draw any real
conclusions from.
You’re left guessing at what you’ve just watched; you
probably did just enjoy the visual feast, yet are left
with the slightly bitter aftertaste of wood alcohol.
WIN A PRIVATE FALCONRY EXPERIENCE
for you and your friends and family
Step into the tranquil surroundings
of Thoresby Park and experience
nature at first hand. Grasp an
unforgettable experience and
knowledge as you delve deeply
into the remarkable world of
Birds of Prey. From Bluebell, the
beautiful and large Great Grey Owl
to Tilly, the small but boisterous,
Kestrel - the team at Hawkeye
host a remarkable and exclusive
experience with their wide range
of birds.
Hawkeye Falconry UK have cared
for birds, both large and small
for over 30 years now. Originally
based in Shropshire, near Ludlow,
the team expanded around 10
years ago to form a second
location, in Nottinghamshire. The
team focus on the conservation of
birds and also provide educational,
entertaining displays at some of
the largest events in the UK.
At the start of the covid pandemic,
like all suppliers and traders
on the show circuit, the diary
cleared of events and did look
sparse. Therefore the team
contacted Thoresby Park, near
Ollerton, to see if they would be
happy for Hawkeye to undertake
experiences. The aim was to
keep the birds enthused with
excitement, to meet and fly to
members of the public, as well as
flying daily at the teams base. Due
to the amazing feedback gathered,
the team are now permanently
undertaking experiences at
Thoresby, in addition to attending
the usual calendar of events.
Alistair, who runs the experiences
at Thoresby, undertakes exclusive
sessions with his personal team of
raptors. The experiences vary in
itinerary and are pre-booked only.
Usually they are undertaken in a
small group of guests with multiple
opportunities to fly the birds.
For a more special encounter,
Private and Family Experiences are
available, meaning the birds are
there just for you. Photography
Workshops are also undertaken
for budding photographers, to
learn a wide range of photography
skills. For the more experienced
photographer, the day provides an
opportunity to refine abilities such
as high-speed photography.
Choir member Magnus, sings NBC’s praises;
“Nottingham Boys Choir is a fantastic place to learn
to sing, to make friends and to have fun.
I am 18 and later this year will be leaving NBC
to take up a place at a university in London. No
longer associating Wednesday evenings with choir
rehearsals will be so strange; NBC has been a part
of my life since I was 6 years old, and I will miss so
many things about it.
The annual pantomime trips (tickets funded by a
generous benefactor), football kick-abouts in the
local park, outings to trampoline centres and laser
tag, have all been great fun and I have loved being
part of a ‘club’ with other boys. But the singing is the
thing I will miss the most.
At NBC we sing everything from pop songs to 8-part
15th century madrigals, exploring folk, classical, and
other genres along the way. Our musical director,
Matthew Burton, is so enthusiastic and he is an
amazing singer too; his vocal range is phenomenal –
he can demonstrate the treble parts, and power out
the bass notes comfortably too!
It’s going to be a sad day for me when I perform in
my final concert with NBC, but I know the Choir will
continue to thrive, and I look forward to attending
NBC concerts in the future. New members are
always welcome, and I promise you, it’s brilliant!”
