Your Award Winning Community Magazine
Welcome to the latest issue of
Target Magazine.
It has been quite a few weeks for us... We won
an award. The team are delighted to have
claimed the prize for community support at the
Business Growth Awards. This is a major result
for the target team as less than three years ago
the magazine was just an idea scribbled on
a piece of paper and a dream that we could
start something that might make a difference,
however small.
I want to say a big thanks to our clients, my
team and of course you the reader for embracing
the magazine from the start.
There are big things planned for the magazine
this year and we hope you continue to enjoy
reading. If you are a local charity and good
cause and would like us to help you get your
message to the right people completely free of
charge then please get in touch and we can help
you through our community partners scheme.
If you are a local business and would like to
work with an award winning team to help you
achieve your marketing goals then please get in
touch, we would love to help.
Spring is around the corner and we have a few
exciting things happening over the next few
months but for now I hope you enjoy the magazine
and if you do choose to use one of our
advertisers please mention Target as it helps the
magazine to grow.
Until next month..

Jamie Oliver’s Chai
Sticky Date Pudding
with Toffee Sauce
Introduction
There has been a tradition in recent years to let
our Christmas flavours and tastes extend into
the new year, and I really like that. After all, why
should it be that we can’t enjoy turkey in spring,
or add brandy butter to our desserts in summer.
Dates are one of those fruits that count as another
festive filler that seems to be forgotten about during
other times of the year, but I don’t see why – they’re
sweet, full of texture and actually really versatile.
So as we work our way through winter, why not extend
that homely, rustic feeling with this date and toffee pudding. It’s
warm, tasty and reassuring; and unlike Christmas, it won’t cost you
the earth!
Ingredients
(serves 6)
• 150g unsalted butter (at
room temperature), plus extra
for greasing
• 500g self-raising flour, plus
extra for dusting
• 500g dried pitted dates
• 1 orange
• 2 chai tea bags
• 20g of bicarb
• 350g dark brown sugar
• 5 large free-range eggs
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 50g golden syrup
• 75g black treacle
For the Toffee Sauce
• 125g double cream
• 50g unsalted butter
• 50g dark brown sugar
• 30g golden syrup
• 1 lug of brandy
Method
1. Preheat the oven to 160°C
and place a tray of water in the
bottom (this creates steam to
keep the pudding moist), then
butter and flour a 25cm tin.
Now chop the pitted dates, and
zest the orange.
2. Boil 400ml of water, turn the
heat off, then add the tea bags
and infuse for 3mins. Boil again,
whisk in the bicarb and add the
dates. Leave to one side to cool
to room temperature.
3. Next, cream the butter and
sugar in a food processor until
light and fluffy. Now whisk
the eggs, vanilla, orange zest,
golden syrup and treacle and
pour into the butter mixture in
stages, beating until smooth
each time. Sieve the flour and
fold gently into the batter. Stir in
the date mixture, then pour into
the Bundt tin.
4. Bake for one hour, or until a
knife inserted into the centre
comes out clean. Leave to cool
in the tins for 5mins.
5. Pop all the sauce ingredients
in a small pan and bring to
the boil over a medium heat.
Simmer for 5mins, stirring, then
remove from the heat.
6. Finally, invert the pudding
onto a platter and baste with
a little of the sauce. Serve
with clotted cream and the
remaining sauce on the side.

Mental Health
Tell A Fella
Why men should never be
afraid to open up about
their mental health.
We all know that life can be
stressful for everyone, but it
is men who are not able to
find an outlet for these
pressures and this leads to
long term problems.
In the UK, suicide is the highest cause
of death among men under the age 45.
In fact the highest suicide rate in the
UK is recorded for men aged 40–44.
The figures are startling, and this
doesn’t consider that behind each one
of those tragedies is a family left to
pick up the pieces.
Despite this, men all over the UK are
still afraid to open up and tell someone
that they are struggling. There are
many factors for this but there seems
to be a trend that it is just not ‘manly’
to say that you are no doing so well –
this needs to change. Of course, men
are talking a lot more over recent years,
but this is still a long way short of
where we need to be.
The mental health of the nation is at a
crisis point and this has been exaggerated
by the recent troubles brought on
by the COVID 19 pandemic. Men are
trying to juggle money worries, family
life, work and just being strong for
their families.
We all know that life can be stressful for
everyone, but it is men who are not able
to find an outlet for these pressures and
this leads to long term problems.
This year I have struggled with my own
mental health. It has been a real challenge
to be truthful, particularly as a husband, father
and small business owner. Depression,
low self-worth and constant self-doubt can
make everything twice as hard, especially
when running a business. Throw in a recent
diagnosis of OCD and you have a real mix
of potential daily pitfalls.
What has helped with as well as the support
from my wife has been opening up to a
friend. A good mate of mine has also been
going through his own battles with OCD
and mental health this year and we began
to talk. Talking to someone, anyone will
make you feel better but also speaking to
someone who is going through something
similar makes you realise that you are not
alone.
Tell A Fella
It was during one of these talks that
we hit on the idea for Tell A Fella.
An outlet for men where they can
talk to other guys going living with
mental health. The idea is simple
really – Tell A Fella your problems,
lean on each other and get through
it! Having a buddy has certainly
helped my friend and I and we are
always their at the end of a phone
when a trigger happens or the day is
just tough.
We will also be launching a podcast in the next few weeks to further raise awareness
and encourage men to come forward and talk.
The statistics will only get better if we make all men realise that far from being
weak, telling someone you are not doing so well is incredibly brave!
So guys if you feel things are getting too much for you don’t suffer in silence, Tell a
fella.

Standing with Ukraine
Written by Oliver Eddolls
The horrors we’re witnessing in Ukraine
are overwhelming. Putting one’s own
self in the shoes of the millions fleeing
the war is challenging for many of
us living in Torfaen, who have never
experienced anything close to the heart
ache, fear and loss of those brave people
ripped from the place they call home.
Perhaps it’s this feeling of privilege;
coupled with helplessness in the face
of what looks to be growing into a
monumental humanitarian crisis; that
has caused many across the UK to ask;
quite earnestly; what small part they
can play in helping? From donations to
collective displays of support within the
community; here are a few ways that,
should you feel able to in what have
proven difficult times for us all, you can
do your bit to help those in need.
DEC Ukraine Appeal
(donation.dec.org.uk)
The DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee)
is an umbrella group of UK
charities, including but not limited to
Oxfam, Actionaid and the British Red
Cross. Many of the charities operating
under the umbrella of the DEC are running
individual appeals. By donating to
the DEC appeal, you can help provide
food, water, shelter and healthcare to
those who need it most. Every pound
donated to the appeal will be matched
by the UK government.
Additionally, by selecting the ‘Gift Aid’
option you can add 25% to your donation,
as well as donating directly online,
you can also give via the Post Office.
With Ukraine
(crowdfunder.co.uk)
You can also donate to Ukraine via
the Ukrainian Embassy. Additionally,
should wish to go the extra mile,
this method allows you to start a
fundraising appeal, either on behalf
of UNICEF, The DEC, or your own
personal appeal, all through the site
Crowdfunder.
Médecins Sans Frontières
(msf.org.uk/secure/donate)
MSF have been aiding those affected
by conflict or humanitarian crises
for the last fifty years. Providing
both medical supplies and emergency
medical training, Médecins Sans
Frontières needs help in meeting
the needs of Ukrainians fleeing the
conflict to Poland and other neighbouring
countries.
Donating Essential Supplies
There are co-ordinated efforts across
South Wales to donate supplies such
as toiletries, clothes, linen and baby
items to Ukrainian families. Many
of these appeals have reached their
capacity of donations, so it is wise to
Target Talks
check online for those still accepting
donations. You can do this by visiting
community Facebook groups in
your area.
If you’re struggling to find donation
centres in your area, the site refugease.org
allows you to buy vital
bundles and care packages, donated
straight to those who need them
most in Hungary.
What to think about when donating
If you decide to donate money to an organisation not listed above; it is important
that you check the reliability of the organisation you choose. You can do this by
searching the name or number of the organisation on The Government Charity Register,
available online at www.gov.uk/find-charity-information.
If you manage to find a donation centre still accepting physical goods; it’s advisable
to only donate new clothes and linen. This prevents the centres from having to
spend time sanitising the goods ready to be shipped over.
