This spring issue of Estetica USA will once again focus on inspiration, centered
on two complementary articles. In her contribution this time around, Editor-at-
Large Maggie Mulhern chose to highlight the finalists of NAHA category of
Editorial Stylist of the Year. Then in our professional section we followed up with
another article on the photographers of these same collections, aiming to offer
“I’m not going to continue
knocking that old door
that doesn’t open for me.
I’m going to create my own
door and walk through that.”
— Ava DuVernay
more insight into the creative process and the teamwork involved.
And the one overwhelming message
being conveyed is to continue inspiring
and being inspired, to keep moving
forward.
The same theme is showcased in our USA and International hair fashion albums,
our “Power Lines” and “Bling for Spring” articles, as well as coverage of events
like ABS, and the latest products and cutting-edge tools. Everything you need to
help you on your journey. Bon voyage!
Power Lines
If it’s not about the colour, then it must be all about the shape. A
combination of geometry and creativity is always head-turning!
Gary Kelly and Marie Scarano
Lines form angles and angles create shapes. We drew on the international talent and expertise of some international
stylists and colourists to show us their favourite Power Lines – fringes, bangs, partings, asymmetric cuts – a look with
a sharp geometric, eye-catching edge to it!
CLEAN CUT
“The extreme styling is a combination of a clean cut tailoring with strong powerful outlines. Hair is given a subtle midnight blue coloured blended with
handcrafted shape. These powerful angular lines reflect the new take on "natural daylight” gradients. To achieve this ultra-styling, I prepped with Oribe Imperial
Blowout Transformative Styling Crème to create a full, flawless, smooth blow dry that gives styling in strength. Finished with Oribe Très Set Structure Spray, this
light spray foam adds structure, density, shine and all-day memory.” Marco Chan, (Hong Kong)
Hair: Marco Chan (@marcochanpro); Photo: Karl Lam; Model: Fion Hui
SHARP & STRONG
“At Rainbow Room International we love haircuts with sharp, strong lines. We use a lot of colour in our work and pairing the colour with a haircut with
precision cutting it enhances the colour, gives the look sleekness and creates even more of a statement finish. Precise bobs are a classic geometric cut but
at Rainbow Room International we like to create something less simple and more edgy with our lines. With this look in particular we wanted to create a
horizontal line at eye level to help draw you into the models facial features such as their eyes and cheekbones and to give the look a geometric finish that
showcases our cutting skills when it comes to these shorter more precise cuts.” Dylan Brittain, Rainbow Room International (UK)
DEFIANT SHAPES
“At Marc Antoni we love to create strong, defiant shapes that stand out. This image was created with
femininity and great strength in mind. We wanted to show that cropped styles with intricate details,
sharp lines and geometric shapes can still represent beauty and create a feminine feel. The exaggerated
tapered sides accentuate the models incredible bone structure and cheek bones. The style was
finished off with carefully placed pieces of hair falling onto the forehead. This was to add another
dimension to the look and show a playful side simultaneously.” Bruno Marc, Marc Antoni Salons &
JOICO Ambassador for Europe (UK)
Colour & Cut: Marc Antoni Artistic Team; Photo: Jamie Blanshard
ANGULAR BRAID
“I love the almost blue colour of a moonlit night sky around a full moon. With this collection I wanted
to channel the dark hues of the night sky into a range of looks that take a darker turn, yet are glamorous
and express my love for working with afro hair in all its beauty. I love braiding and in this picture the
shape created by the braid is awesome and the flick of hair at the front really makes it come to life.”
DRAMATIC EDGE
“The power of detail and placement of the graphic disconnections frame the eye, cheekbone and jaw.
Inspired by the youth culture aesthetic of making a quick, dramatic statement with their look by cutting
in side panels. It’s the perfect look for the client that wants everything. Extravagant, healthy and brave,
framing the face to highlight features creating a very edgy look on extremely long hair. It’s a double cut;
hide the length and it’s a bob. The fractured silhouette is enhanced with sleeves of bold colour placement
with an organic fluid colour palette.” Daniele de Angelis, TONI&GUY (UK)
BEAUTIFUL BLENDING
“I’m really proud of this look for its combination of smoothness and angularity. Beautiful blending combines
with a heavyweight feature line to create an iconic hairstyle which is both progressive and innovative.” Eason
STREET SHAPE
“This image is from my collection Tokyo Love Booth. It’s a really bold, striking image that the whole collection hangs around. I’m
fascinated by the Tokyo street fashion scene and how the young Japanese style themselves, blending old and new. This particular
image was inspired by the ‘minka’ style roof you would see on traditional Japanese homes. They were designed like this so that when it
rained, they believed the curve on the roof would send the rain or evil spirits bouncing back up to the sky. I love thinking that this hair
style does the same thing!” Tim Scott-Wright (UK)
Hair: Tim Scott-Wright; Photo: Michael Young; Make-up: Kirsten B @kirstenbmakeupartist;
Styling: Claire Frith
ANTI-GRAVITY
“I created the hair with anti-gravity texture and waves that are synonymous with the wind blowing randomly and informally on the
hair. I created three bold, vibrant colours accentuated by orange. My Empress Collection was inspired by Buddha’s teaching to remain
firm in the face of the eight contrasting worldly winds of prosperity, decline, disgrace, honour, praise, censure, suffering, and pleasure,
that may blow into our lives from time to time - even into the life of an Empress!” Anakin Chan (USA)
EXTREME SHADOWS
This look is inspired by shadows; not only in the lighting but also in the individual pieces of hair, which were created with an
extreme ‘shadow ombré’. The ends were lightened to a pale yellow and overlaid with high line green. Special lighting gives the hair
a more florescent look. Models hair was very short so the hair you see are hairpieces using wig tape to secure . Hair was flat ironed
and point cut to customize the shape.” Allen Furlan (USA)
Hair: Allen Furlan; Make-up: Romelia Pelin; Photographer: John Ng
“This photo was a from a collection called Discotheque, all about strong women in the clubs at night. Strong Lines, strong shapes
and powerful colours. Like a streak of lightning – but in a clear blue sky!” Dana Lyseng (USA)
DISCONNECTED HARMONY
“Inspired by a refined rawness in the colour and hair texture. Creating a combination
of warm golds, light pinks and peach to accentuate the disconnection in the fringe
and lengths. Disconnected harmony in colour and cut. The image gives a bohemian
inspiration in a story told by the raw beauty of each model.” Timothy Switzer (USA)
SPOTLIGHT
“Our classic signature looks are seen in on our walls @industryhair. These classic looks stem from the iconic
“bob”, “one length” and the modern “pixie”. They are progressions from our beauty school days that clearly
are timeless looks that will be forever in fashion and forever evolve. Creating these looks was important to us.
We wanted to share our gratitude to where we came from. We were stylist and now educators as well and
share the love for our craft to others looking for inspiration. We love to show beautiful shapes accented with
beautiful colours and allow the image to create our story.” David & Marilyn Vendittelli (USA)
NAHA 2022:
the challenge
One of the most exciting categories of the North American
Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) is “Editorial Stylist of the Year”
Morris Salon,
sees this entry as
softer and more
subtle than what he’s
seen nominated in
the past.
The NAHA category “Editorial Stylist of the Year” is unique in that it combines not only the vision
of the beauty team creating the images, but the approval and publication by an editor at a consumer
magazine. This category requires acceptance on many levels making it one of the most challenging in
the competition. The guidelines are specific: the images must come from a printed or online consumer
publication (not trade), must have been published between Sept 1, 2020 and September 1, 2021 and
cannot be industry specific or used to promote a beauty industry product (advertising). Wigs, hairpieces
and extensions are allowed, but ornamentation or art worn on the head excludes the entry. Editorial
artists are traditionally based in the major cities like NY, LA, Chicago, Toronto or Montreal. The artists
entered in the NAHA category “Editorial Stylist of the Year” are inspiring in that each represents a
smaller or unexpected market like Elsmere, Kentucky and Naperville, Illinois. The entries here run the
gamut from powerful wigs, strong color and Avant Garde design to fun contemporary shape. It’s an
eclectic mix representing everything from on-trend to futuristic.
The North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) is the most prestigious professional beauty competition in
North America and honors the salon industry’s top artists who are celebrated for pushing the boundaries of skill
and creativity. Estetica chose to profile the five finalists in the “Editorial” category as each had the challenge of
creating unique hair designs for photographs to be published in a consumer magazine. The hair was not created
for the sake of the artist but to accent fashion or enhance a story. “The idea behind creating space for this in the
NAHA platform was to get beyond taking photos specifically for NAHA and instead reward the individuals who
are doing photographic work everyday as all or part of their living,” says Michael Shaun Corby, Chairman of the
NAHA Committee.
It is the colour of the season! Encompassing the qualities of blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red
undertone Very Peri “displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous
creativity and imaginative expression”. For hair colourists, it's the dream ticket! Violet has in recent months
been a hugely popular colour choice for salon clients who are craving a strong hair statement; and it doesn't
end there as we've seen the catwalks follow suit, with both couture and accessories embracing the shade.

America’s Beauty Show continues to be a leading innovator
and trendsetter, thanks to their signature editorial fashion
collection - this year created by the talented ULTA Team.
82 events
ABS
Best of the best
For the 2022 edition of America's Beauty Show, the ULTA Beauty Pro Team of talented hair, make-up and nail
artists stepped up to deliver yet another fashion-forward, trendsetting editorial collection to convey the most
important message of this yearly trade event: education, innovation, community, inclusion and fun. Estetica asked
Nick Stenson about working on these colorful and hip looks.
In your own words, how did you draw your inspiration for the ABS collection?
The inspiration for this year’s ABS collection was inspired by street art. Celebrating creativity not only in beauty
but all around us.
What message did you want to convey?
With this year’s collection we want the attendees to see themselves in any one of the models in the collection.
Get inspired by a look a model is wearing or inspired to learn how to recreate it for their guests siting in their chair.
How do you feel these images representative of ABS ?
ABS is evolving and growing and these images represent a fresh approach we are taking to inspire the industry.

How did make-up, styling, nails and barbering fit for the overall looks?
All aspects of beauty have a role in this collection. It's about celebrating all types of beauty artistry for all people.
What new trends do you see forthcoming in color, cuts, and styling?
We are in a moment where people are having fun expressing themselves through beauty. I don't feel one trend
is more popular than another. Regardless if you’re into beautiful balayage, incredible texture, strong shapes that
we are seeing with barbering or even a pop of a bold color, our goal at ABS is that you receive all the inspiration
and tools needed to be able to bring beauty to life on every client that walks through your door.

Image Hunters
The focus of NAHA is obviously on the hair. But there is
always a team effort behind a winning collection. And it’s
the photographer’s job to bring it all together and to life.
The somewhat unsung heroes of NAHA - the ones not behind the chair, but behind the camera. The
photographers who make the vision come to life. The photographer is the glue that holds the hair,
make-up and nail art, and wardrobe stylis together, adds light and shadows and the perfect crop to
capture the magic that is beauty. To complement Maggie Mulhern's article about the NAHA Editorial
finalists, we asked the relative photographers for their viewpoint. What is the secret to winning NAHA?
Nohemi Capetillo, who snapped Liza Espinoza Achurra's Editorial collection, says, “Be 100% true to
yourself and your vision. Be prepared, adapt to challenges, and have fun with it all.”
ROBERTO LIGRESTI
“I’m always open to a healthy discussion with the artist. I need to know their thoughts
before approaching the shoot (is their “feeling” Dark, and Goth, or if it’s instead angelic, and light...)
I also make sure that the wardrobe enhances the collection without distracting from it.”

CAROLINE MILLER
“For the longest time I didn’t even realize that full Creative Direction
was a role I was taking on with my photo shoots. It just came naturally
to envision the shoot’s full concept, style, and execution.”
Caroline Miller was the “eye” behind finalist Matthew Morris’s ethereal images, succeeding in her quest
for an “other-worldly” vibe.
What contributions do you make to the concept of a collection?
I am a big story teller with my work so I like to get into the mood, progression and connection of each
look, and the overall vibe we are looking to capture. I believe in the importance of being prepared for
the day of the shoot but also the importance of leaving room to play and be spontaneous. Some of the
best shots come from improvising with some variations after we think we’ve got the shot.
How do you select models and decide on poses and lighting??
I not only want to look for the right features and hair color/texture, but if they themselves can connect with
the idea and dig deep to emote it. Can they be soft and angelic? Can they evoke darkness or intensity?
For posing I am always inspired by shapes and movement. I was a dancer and professional figure skater
for 15 years so I transfer that body awareness into my photography. I find negative space just as
important to draw the eye in. In general, I am very inspired by art, specifically painters. I pay attention to
the movement of the brush strokes and colors and try to imitate it in photographic art.
What advice would you give to hairdressers who aspire to winning NAHA?
Create with intention. Take the time to really look at your idea from all angles and ask yourself: Am I
creating something new? Am I creating something interesting? What am I saying? A great idea can come
in a flash but really hone in and research to develop it fully.
JOSEPH CARTRIGHT
“It’s not all about hair. If it were, you would be able to simply create
your vision on a mannequin and shoot it on your camera phone and be done.
It’s about you as an artist and your art.
What you are trying to create is an art piece - Not just hair.”
Finalist Ashley Stewart Wright recruited more than an expert photographer to capture her hair vision.
Joseph Cartright is the ultimate eclectic!
How do you approach working with the hairdresser on the concept?
The concept guides the art direction and it gives the team a vision and focus where they can place their
creative talents... Once we are comfortable with a concept/direction we create a new board that
encompasses the concept, the hair “story” and the fashion, makeup and lighting direction. We then share
the board with the team and get their input and allow them to expand or contract the board, allowing
them to get engaged in the project.
Where do you draw your inspiration for selecting models and deciding on poses and lighting?
Model selection is about finding the right “actor” Then on set, giving and directing the model thru a
story helps them connect with the camera. Once they are in the “zone” it becomes a dance of movement,
lighting and direction to capture the moment when everything is in sync.
What advice would you give to hairdressers who aspire to winning NAHA??
Fail, fail and fail some more. Failure is not the enemy but it usually is the reason you are paralyzed into
not creating. The fear of failure is real! And I get it but do you really think creative success is a switch?
Just turn it on and go? Umm… no… the process is a slog - sometimes entertaining, sometimes brutally
defeating, sometimes unsatisfying and sometimes rewarding, but you know what it always is ….
Educating! Creative success is built on a hill of failures - go out and fail spectacularly!
Tool power
Take stock in some latest cutting and styling tools that
can help keep you at the top of your game. Some minor
investments in your salon can help you reap big benefits.
The salon industry has made enormous advances in technology over the years, but it never decides
to rest on its laurels. There is always something new coming down the pipeline or already available.
And not only in terms of hair color and salon services, but also in the so-called "hardware" that can
make all the difference in your comfort behind that chair as well as in the results you can achieve.
Every year manufacturers invest in research on new materials and ergonomics with a view to
improving both the efficiency and form of everything - from basics like brushes, combs, and shears
to more complex devices, like hot tools, clippers and shavers.
Some lend a cutting-edge to your salon design, with sleek lines and colors, while others work more
efficiently in terms of energy savings, cordless autonomy and other advantages.
Here is our latest round-up of the must-have tools that can make a change in your professional life.
Freestyle Systems
Dennese King, Cosmetology Instructor
at Francis Tuttle Technology Center, says
“We installed Freestylists at the center for
safety reasons – having the blow dryers
suspended from the ceiling eliminates
tripping on cords, banging into stuffed
drawers that won’t close or having to clean
cables. It also prevents blow dryers from
dropping to the floor breaking or injuring
someone,” she adds. “It’s innovative
technology that makes teaching and
learning more convenient and controlled."
What better way
to flaunt your
barbering skills
than this classic
pomp with a
modern twist for
SS2022?
1. First, use thinning scissors to
create shape and texture to the top.
2. Using the Andis Master®
Cordless clippers with a number 2
attachment comb and a closed
blade, define the graduation
working your way down through
the haircut.
3. Next, switch to a number 1
attachment comb with the blade
closed to smooth out the
transition between the long and
short hair.
7
4. Clean and sharpen the haircut
using the Andis Master without an
attachment comb and the blade
open.
5. To get a sharp fade, adjust the
lever between closed and halfway
open to smooth out the transition
lines.
6. With the Andis Slimline® Pro
GTX, define the edges to create a
classic look with a modern twist.
7. Use the Andis ProFoil® shaver,
to finish up the sides and back to
get a clean finish.
SINDI SAYS...
“Tools can make you money, that’s
for sure – with the right tools you
can take off around 6-10 minutes
of the overall cut time,” says Sindi
Devitte, Andis Global Educator,
“You can then use that time to ,
strengthen the bond between
barber and client. I find the best
tools for everything are the
cordless Andis tools; they’re
definitely way ahead.” Moreover,
barbering skills are becoming
increasingly in demand for
women, too! “We see more and
more women going to barbershops
every day. Not only for pixie cuts
and shorter styles, but also for
shaping eyebrows,” Sindi notes.
wellness, and so many more. With
the customization opportunities of
this program, a student can pursue a
exposure to beauty, humanity,
culture, and beyond. It will expand
their life experience and enrich them
as humans. It will take their
communication and interaction skills
to a whole new level. On the
technical front, it will expose them to
global fashion, trends, and the
intelligence and strategy that goes
into this space. Since beauty has the
power of bringing people together,
the more the students feel and
experience their power in different
cultures, the more intellectually
confident they will become.
CREATE YOUR
ONLINE STORE EASILY
AND QUICKLY
It’s natural to want to impress
clients, so salons needn’t worry
if they feel they don’t have
the technical skills to create a
professional looking online shop.
Fresha has made it so simple and
intuitive that any salon can set
up and have a fully functioning
e-commerce store in minutes.
“We’ve created a simple, intuitive
e-commerce experience within
Fresha that’s designed for salon
professionals, not IT experts,”
explains Nick Miller, Fresha cofounder.
“Within just a few clicks,
you can personalise your store with
a logo, store name and description.
Adding products couldn’t be easier
and you can also add social links, so
all your customers will know that
you’re now trading online.”
IT’S TIME TO TELL
YOUR CLIENTS
When your store is set up a unique
store link is generated, so it’s easy to
promote it on social media, and by
using the marketing tools available
within the Fresha platform. With
delivery and collection options
available, partners can offer clients
the option to collect their purchase
from the salon, reserve it for when
they attend their next appointment
or have it shipped directly their home,
workplace or specified delivery
address. “Salons mailing products
will need to ensure they have the
right packaging and materials for
their safe transit and arrival,” adds
Nick. “But providing a professional
shopping experience and encouraging
clients to leave reviews is a great
way to maximise additional income
from product sales.”
EASY ONLINE PAYMENTS
To ensure smooth, seamless
payments to your online store,
Fresha Payment Processing is
the perfect way to collect online
payments, as partners receive
money upfront, and it’s contactless
Fresha co-founders William Zeqiri and Nick Miller.
too. When your store is activated,
Fresha simply charges a transaction
fee of 2.19% + $0.20, so partners
only pay as they sell. And if for
any reason a refund needs to be
processed for a purchase made
on your online store, that’s easily
done at the click of a button. “The
potential for online retail in the
hair, beauty and wellness industry
is huge, yet many businesses are
yet to take advantage of this,”
continues William Zeqiri, Fresha
CEO and founder. “Fresha Store is
a big step in the right direction as
we’ve made it easy to create a store
within Fresha. As part of our feature
mix, it means salon businesses
have everything in one place,
which simplifies their business lives
too. Their clients are comfortable
shopping online with other retailers
and e-commerce businesses, and it’s
a big part of our lives as shopping
trends continue to evolve. Salon
businesses need to benefit from this
retail transformation and now they
can with Fresha Store.”
Join Fresha FREE and set up
your online store today at
When your store
is set up a unique
store link is
easy to promote
it on social media,
and by using the
marketing tools
available within
the Fresha platform.

Denman is making
positive choices
about their
environmental
impact (so you
can too!)
Global brand Denman
has made huge strides
in their sustainability
efforts over the last five
years and they don’t
plan on stopping or
even slowing down any
time soon. International Business
Manager Martyn Wady says,
“Denman has found incredible
partners for purchasing recycled
raw materials and packaging and
they are now an intrinsic part of
our efforts.
Our staff are all focused on seeing
the ways in which they can reduce
waste and energy consumption,
reuse materials and recycle.
Once you get started on the
sustainability journey it becomes
a brilliant shift of culture!”
And once your culture has shifted,
heightened awareness makes it all
seem so easy. For example,
Denman have made the following
5 basic changes:
• Removed all single use plastics
from packaging and packaging is
now 100% sustainable and
recyclable. The amount of
packaging has also been reduced.
• The Iconic D3 Brush range is
100% recyclable.
• Offers replacement pin pads
for the Iconic Range to lengthen
the life of the brush.
• Currently recycling used PPE
waste into brushes and combs.
• All plastic waste in the
Reducing packaging and switching to
recyclable materials is just a starting point.
For example, PPE waste can be converted into
brushes and combs. Even plastic waste
resulting from the manufacturing process can
be ground up and recycled.
manufacturing process is ground
and recycled.
Denman’s initiatives have
generated an improved mindset
on innovation and accountability
and created many ways to
demonstrates a commitment to
caring for the global community.
Hair professionals have real power
to make a difference by choosing
brands that align with a
sustainable future.
Denman’s biggest tip on moving
to a sustainable business future?
... just THINK harder about the
choices you make on a daily basis
when consuming resources.
The rest will become second nature!
