Lectures about the Revolution

Camden County College and the Skirmish

Committee are preparing to present a series of

lectures about the American Revolution, from the

perspective of our communities.

The series is part of the build-up for the Sat Jun 4

Skirmish on Kings Highway.

The series begins with a lecture on Wed Mar 30

at 7pm at the Masonic Temple (16 Kings Hwy E).

Garry Stone will describe the life of John Inskeep

(born near Haddonfield in 1757).

Inskeep volunteered in June 1776 to serve five

months in a temporary regiment sent to help

defend New York City. In fact, he served for the

next two years – as a militia cavalry man, artillerist,

quartermaster, and commissary.

He was at the battles of Princeton, Billingsport,

and Fort Mercer. Later he served as a quartermaster

for Continental Army.

His story is a vivid illustration of the ways the

American Revolution affected South Jersey.

Lecturer Garry Stone has a PhD in American

Studies from the University of Pennsylvania.

His entire career focuses on researching,

restoring, and interpreting historic sites and

landscapes.

He has served as chief archaeologist and then

director of research at Historic St. Mary’s City,

Maryland, historian at Monmouth Battlefield

State Park and historian at the Indian King Tavern

Museum in Haddonfield.

He is the author of numerous articles on

archaeology and history and a contributing author

of Fatal Sunday: George Washington, the Monmouth

Campaign, and the Politics of Battle.

The second lecture in the series, in the Borough

Hall at 7pm on Wed Apr 6, will be presented by

Doug Rauschenberger,

He will talk about life in Haddonfield during the

American Revolution.

Details about the Skirmish, and the lecture

series in particular, may be found here n, or on the

website of the Friends of the Indian Kings Tavern

Museum: IndianKingFriends.org.
