APO CONNECTING
2022

NAU MAI, HAERE MAI
Welcome to our Connecting programme for
2022. Whoever you are and wherever you
live in this wonderful city of ours, Tāmaki
Makau Rau, we are committed to bringing you
inspiring, engaging and entertaining musical
activities and opportunities, if not right now,
then as soon as we’re able to do so!
APO Connecting’s philosophy is that
‘Music opens Minds’. Music can improve
your wellbeing and help promote a sense of
community, belonging and cultural fulfilment.
And, as we come to terms with another year
living through the pandemic, the importance of
having music in our lives is immeasurable.
A big thank you to our sponsors, funders
and donors who champion and generously
contribute to the APO Connecting programme
each year. This support enables us to deliver a
diverse range of activities that benefit everyone
across the Auckland region.
Take the time to browse this guide and see the
exciting concerts and events on offer. We look
forward to connecting with you through music
in 2022.
BARBARA GLASER
APO CHIEF EXECUTIVE
KIA ORA KOUTOU KATOA,
It is with great pleasure that we welcome
you to an exciting year of APO Connecting
activity in 2022. This year is jam-packed as
ever with something for everyone – from the
smallest pēpē to our beloved tupuna.
Our popular concert for pre-schoolers, APO
4 Kids, will be ‘outta this world’ as we explore
the theme of space, with sing and play along
activities in a fun-filled interactive concert for
your tamariki. And we’re cooling things down
with our free full orchestral concert series
Community Classics, featuring music from or
about the frozen tundra.
For schools we are exploring the theme of
journeys in our annual Discovery concert for
akonga in secondary school. Our Kiwi Kapers
concert for primary and intermediate schools
takes on a Pacific twist with a new commission
written to tell a special Cook Island story.
I can’t wait to see you all at one of our concerts
or events this year. We are looking forward to
bringing live music back to Tāmaki Makau Rau
– there is nothing like the real thing!
SUPPORT
YOUR
ORCHESTRA
ZOSIA’S STORY
Zosia Herlihy-O’Brien has been playing
the violin since she was four years old.
Her love of music developed as she grew
older. From summer camps to the Chamber
Music New Zealand Contest final, her desire
to share her passion took her around the
country. But it was her experience in APO’s
Aspiring Musicians programme that gave her
something unique.
“Being an APO Aspiring Musician
is different to anything I have been
involved with before. I learnt so much
– not just about performing. It all fuelled
my desire to continue to share my love
for classical music, both on the main
stage and in the community as well.
I will always be grateful to the APO
for the experience.”
The APO Aspiring Musicians, an
APO Connecting initiative, are a group
of talented young musicians selected to
participate in APO events throughout the
year. The programme gives emerging talent
the chance to gain real-life experience as
working musicians.
The Future Fund supports APO
Connecting activities from APOPs to our
youth justice and dementia programmes.
These generous donors recognise the
ability that music holds to heal and inspire
our Auckland communities.
If you are interested donating to the Future
Fund and supporting the work of APO
