IN THE CHAIR
with Simon Negus
A warm welcome to Virginia Water for today's
Cherry Red Records Combined Counties
League Premier Division North fixture.
Good afternoon and welcome to the Racecourse for
todays Combined Counties league game against our close
neighbours from Virginia Water.
I’m sure we all share the sentiment on the front cover of
todays programme, standing firmly in support for Ukraine.
As a club we are making a significant donation to the
fundraising efforts, and are exploring other things we can
do to help. It is perhaps a good time to announce that we
have just appointed our first ever Club Chaplain. I’m
delighted to say that Tim Rose, a coach in our junior
section and Reverend at St Mary Magdalene in Littleton,
has volunteered to take this role and anyone in our club or
wider football community is welcome to contact him to
discuss any pastoral concerns or issues.
We were delighted with the draw for the Semi-Final of the
Senior County Cup… a home match against Wycombe
Wanderers, the draw that Jamie wanted! No date has been
agreed yet at the time of writing, but plans are already
being discussed for what is likely to be the biggest game
we’ve hosted for many years. Watch out for the appeal for
volunteers! With the team on such a good run at the
moment, it’s great to have the positivity flowing around
the club.
We have two teams in County Cup Final action this
weekend - the U16 Diamonds Girls play Crystal Palace in
the Surrey Cup at Dorking FC and the U14 Youth Boys play
Aylesbury Vale Dynamos in the Berks & Bucks Cup @ AFC
Wallingford… good luck to all involved.
It’s also a big weekend for the Ladies senior teams - the
First Team can secure their highest ever league finish
with a positive result against Eastleigh, and the all
conquering Reserves will wrap up the League title with at
least a point against Ruislip. Whatever happens, the
Ladies Section goes from strength to strength and I can
see an exciting few seasons ahead.
Good luck to all of teams this weekend! Simon

FROM THE DUGOUT
Welcome to the players, officials
and supporters of Virginia Water.
Enjoy the game!
Jamie Tompkins
First Team Manager
Hello and welcome to Virginia Water FC players, staff and club committee and to all supporters in
attendance for this afternoons fixture.
The busy football calendar continues and we are in the middle of 5 games in two weeks! Still, the
squad are full of energy and aiming to set a club record of 10 consecutive wins.
A hard fought win and a touch of class from Taylor Morgan and Sam Gray secured the 3 points on
Tuesday night.
Like our opponent’s midweek, Virginia Water are scrapping for points at the bottom end of the table
and these games are always the hardest to play in. A comfortable 5-1 win against Edgware Town last
week and two wins against Abbey Rangers this season, shows they have ability to outperform any
team on their day.
In other team news, we are delighted to welcome back two former players to the club this week, Elliott
Carey and Kai Walters, both great characters and will add further quality to the squad.
Good luck to our ladies first team and reserves this weekend! It has been a brilliant season for both
teams, an almost-certain league title for the reserves and a potential record high finish for the first
team so we will look to draw inspiration from this.
Thank you to our sponsors, club officials and volunteers for all the fantastic work and ongoing support
towards our football club.
Enjoy the game! Jamie
ON COURSE!
With Programme Editor Neal Jeffs
Welcome to the players, officials and
supporters of Virginia Water for this Cherry
Red Records Combined Counties League
Premier Division North match.
Happy
reading, and
enjoy the
game! Neal
Welcome back to The Racecourse for another important league game as the pressure
mounts at the top. We’re certainly doing our bit but looking at the table it is so tight
with only 2 points separating 2nd and 6th place! It was great to see Elliot Carey back
on the pitch for us on Tuesday. When he was in top form during his last spell he was
superb in a combative, dominant midfield role and hopefully we can see more of that
over the next few weeks. My 2nd hope for this week is that the rain stays away as, after
90 minutes behind the goal on Tuesday, my feet and flags have only just dried out! My
main focus this week is on tomorrow. It is such a big day for our football club with 2
county cup finals – boys U14 Berks and Bucks cup final in the morning at Wallingford
and girls U16 Surrey cup final at Dorking in the afternoon – and all that is in addition to
the 2 Ladies games which have huge significance to final standings. If you are free
tomorrow afternoon then The Racecourse is the place to be as The Ladies Reserves
will win the title if they draw with 2nd-placed Ruislip Rangers, who are the only team
that can mathematically catch them.
ми з україною
Looking ahead, we’ve got a brilliant county cup draw looming against Wycombe
Wanderers. I know we are assessing demand and ticketing and we are also
intending to publish a commemorative paper copy of our matchday programme,
so more on that later. More on the date later, but we expect it to be set for the end
of March / beginning of April. The other semi-final sees MK Dons travel to the
winners of the to-be-played Quarter final tie between Chesham United and
Reading FC. And, on Tuesday night we are on the road at Abbey Rangers. That is
another massive six-pointer and so if you can get yourself down to Addlestone
Moor then do so! And finally, as this week’s imagery shows, there are bigger
things than football right now and it goes without saying we all hope for an end
to conflict soon. Neal

ASCOT UNITED ALLIED U18
ALLIED COUNTIES YOUTH LEAGUE SOUTH
David Thompson rounds up recent news from Nicey's camp
After the highs of the thrilling 3-3 draw in the top of the table clash against Westfield a few weeks back (see
previous games programme notes), the young Yellamen have had match after match postponed in both the
Subsidiary Cup and the Allied Counties League Cup. In fact, twice the game against Guildford City in the
League Cup has fallen foul to a waterlogged pitch at the hosts stadium!
This has left a fixture pile up with games to come in the League, League Cup, Subsidiary Cup and the Grant
McLellan (Combined Counties) Under 18 Cup including 2 games which would win the young Yellamen the
league if they beat Virginia Water and Fleet Spurs!
Manager Josh Nice will certainly need to try and keep his lads all fit for some big games coming up!
The full list as it stands for the next few weeks is below which includes 2 matches in 2 days on the 28th and
29th March!!
Away v Virginia Water (League) 07/03
Away v Guildford City (Lge. Cup) 14/03
Home v Badshot Lea (Subsidiary Cup) 22/03
Away v Windsor (Subsidiary Cup) 28/03
Home v Farnham (Grant McLellan Cup) 29/03.
All support home and away for the young lads is always appreciated by them and anyone who was at the
Westfield game will testify how enjoyable and competitive the under 18 games are! The lads would
especially welcome the extra support on the 29th v Farnham who are likely to bring a sizeable contingent of
fans themselves!
Finally, good luck to Toby Thompson who has been signed by Chalvey Sports FC Men’s team in the Combined
Counties Div 1, until the end of the season, to help them in their current relegation battle! Toby joins 3 other
new signings last week for them, in their battle to stay up! He will still be playing in the U18 team for Ascot!
And, good luck to Ascot Ladies from all at Ascot Allied. In their respective games this weekend the
Yellawomen reserves are at home and will win the league title if they draw with 2nd Placed Ruislip and the
first team are away at Eastleigh where a win would guarantee them a record high league finish of 3rd. Good
luck ladies!!
That is it for the under 18 round up and hopefully normal service will resume with full match reports of
those big games due in the coming weeks! (weather permitting!!!)

MATCH REPORT ROUNDUP
ASCOT EDGE OUT HOLYPORT TO MOVE THIRD
Morgan’s goal enough to equal record winning sequence
Tuesday 1st March 2022 - Cherry Red Records Premier Division North - Ascot
United 1 - 0 Holyport
Taylor Morgan’s first-half goal was enough to secure Ascot United a club record-equalling ninth
consecutive victory against relegation-haunted Holyport on Tuesday evening, moving them up to
third in the league. However, The Yellamen were second-best for long periods against Derek
Sweetman’s energetic side, who will feel that they could have taken something from a tight
encounter.
Holyport arrived in desperate need of points having slipped to 2nd-bottom with a five-point gap to
16th-placed Wokingham and Emmbrook. However, Ascot manager Jamie Tompkins had made it
clear in his program notes that teams scrapping near the bottom are often hard to beat, and with a
smattering of ex-Yellamen in their squad, the visitors were also looking to avenge an opening-day
FA Cup defeat at The Racecourse.
And, ‘Port were the better team in the opening quarter of an hour and almost took a 15th minute lead
when Ashley Hunt smartly headed on for George Lock to run onto – the Holyport number 11 sharing
the same name as Ascot’s number 2 – although his low shot was smartly saved by home ’keeper
Sam Gray. But The Yellamen improved and would take the lead four minutes later in what was the
only other clear cut chance of the half; Morgan superbly planting a left-footed effort into the left
hand corner of the goal after Keaton August had picked him out from the right wing.
Tompkins would introduce all five substitutes between half time and the final whistle, and it was
one of them – James Richardson – that blazed his side’s only meaningful attempt of the second half
over from Sean McCormack’s powerful cross early in the period; albeit a difficult chance arriving at
pace and taken first-time. But the visitors looked most likely to score after that and Festus Lori
might have done better with a flashing header at the far post from Lock’s cross before Gray made a
couple of decent stops amidst penalty area ping-pong, although it was his 80th minute save from
Usman Lalustani’s strike that took a couple of deflections which earned the plaudits when he
clawed the ex-Yellamen’s effort away at full stretch low down to his right. Defender Dan Wilson
might have done better in the third minute of stoppage time when the ball broke kindly for him on
the edge of the area, but the big defender rushed his effort which sailed well wide as Holyport’s
final chance went begging.
A win is a win regardless, and incredibly this was probably Ascot’s toughest test in a run that has
seen them beat two step four sides; much credit for that goes to Holyport who will surely take
confidence as their quest for safety continues. Ascot United: Gray, Lock, Masters, Merrick (Carey),
Bouwers (Everiss), Bailey, McCormack, Scott, Morgan (Davies), August (Richardson), Surpanu
(Nortey).

ASCOT UNITED LADIES
Ascot United Ladies Reserves caused a cup upset as they
edged into the league cup semi finals on Sunday afternoon at
the expense of Long Crendon. John Swallow’s invincible
Thames Valley League Division 3 (East) were made to work for
it by the high-flying Division 1 outfit – who clawed themselves
back from 2-0 down to level the tie at 2-2 at half time – before
The Yellawomen nicked it in the final fifteen minutes to record
a 31st consecutive victory.
Ascot opened the scoring in the 16th minute when impressive Lauren Knight pressed and regained
possession near the half-way line, paving the way for Clodagh Farrell to rifle into the roof of the net from
inside the area. Tia Johnson then doubled her side’s advantage five minutes later with a speculative low
shot that crept in at the near post.
But the visitors would claw their way back into the game and scored two goals in a lengthy period of
stoppage time at the end of the half – both of them almost carbon copies of each other – as Michelle Bailey
nipped in on both occasions to lob Cara O ‘Brien and level the tie at the break.
The second half was a tight affair with Darcey Young constantly asking questions of the visiting defence
with her intelligent passes into the channels, and eventually they were undone when Johnson nipped in
between defender and goalkeeper to flick home the winner in the 79th minute, only moments after
signalling her intent with a long range effort that had fizzed over.
But it took a smart late save from O-Brien to deny Bailey a hat-trick when she stood up well to beat her effort
away for a corner and seal Swallow’s side a place in the last-four. And, as importantly, this was a good test
for the already-promoted Reserves against higher-ranked opposition ahead of next season – and next week
they get the chance to seal the title when second-placed Ruislip Rangers visit The Racecourse.
Ascot United Ladies saw their league cup quarter final tie at
Abingdon United on Sunday called off two days earlier. In the
league, The Yellawomen can guarantee finishing 3rd if they win
their final league fixture at Eastleigh this weekend. Youngster Tia
Johnson (pictured with Alix Todd) bagged January's player of the
month award after her impressive step into first team action from
the U16s, netting 4 goals in what seems to have been a seamless
transition from the junior ranks.
CLUB HISTORY - ASCOT UNITED
Ascot United as we know it, was founded in 1965 by a men’s team who played their games at Sunninghill with “after
match meetings” in The Wells in Cheapside village (now Mikado’s). Teams played as long ago as 1928 under the name
Ascot United but nothing to link them directly to the current club. In 1965, the club had gained permission from the Ascot
Racecourse Trustees to convert the land east of coach park 10 into a football pitch. A wooden clubhouse was built and
this team went on to win many prestigious trophies in the years that followed.
Various youth teams represented Ascot United over the years up to 1988, and 1992 the East Berks 7-a-side Association
was formed by our then Chairman Keith Wicks introducing small-sided junior games and having disbanded in 1980 the
men’s team also reformed. The club continued to grow, entering into partnership with Charters School and being
awarded FA Charter Standard status in 2004. The men’s senior team enjoyed early success through the East Berks
League gaining continued promotions to the Senior division and winning various Cups including the Fielden Charity Cup
in 1996/7. 2001 saw the 1st team join the Reading Senior League and winning the Evening Post Senior Cup at the
Madejski Stadium in 2006. Promotion to the Hellenic League soon followed in 2007, followed by promotion to the
Hellenic Premier Division in 2009. The club today has grown to become one of the largest Community football clubs in
the UK with over 1000 registered players and over 70 teams playing every weekend embracing all ages and abilities
from 5 year olds through to Vets. A new clubhouse opened in September 2010, together with an improved main pitch,
floodlights and a stand.
The club has enjoyed much success at all levels particularly in the Ladies and Girls Section where they are regularly
winners of leagues and county Cups. Our senior Ladies won promotion to the Premier Division of the Southern Region
Women’s’ Football League in 2017-18 and consolidated their position with a mid-table finish in 2018-19. Meanwhile, 2018-
19 was an outstanding one for our junior Boys’ teams who won an array of county cups at various age groups, a feat
we’ve rarely previously achieved.
The past decade has been hugely successful for our first team; our debut in the FA Cup in 2011 attracted 1,149 people to
the Racecourse on a Friday evening where the famous trophy itself was on display and the match was streamed live on
Facebook. Between 2012-13 and 2015-16 we reached the Quarter Final of the FA Vase twice, enjoyed two top-three
finishes in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Division, and won both the Bluefin Sport Challenge Cup and Perpetua
Press Floodlit Cup. More recently, our players’ development took the spotlight, as a host of Yellamen have enjoyed
success with other local sides and many of our talented development players stepped up into the first team. After
finishing 2017-18 in style, in 2018-19 new manager Jamie Tompkins led his side to the top of the table for long spells,
winning two team-of-the-month awards, and finishing with league cup glory once again by defeating Windsor 3-1.
We were transferred into the Combined Counties League for the 2019-20 season, playing on our new 3G pitch facility,
which transformed the club by facilitating more of our teams’ matches and training at The Racecourse. The stronger
platform facilitated further player development, and Jamie’s young side would lead the table for long periods before
establishing what looked like a title-winning margin at the top shortly before the league was aborted due to
Coronavirus. Retaining much of the same squad for 2020-21, Jamie saw his side in and around the challengers before
another pandemic-curtailed season, although they battled through to the league cup final where they were ultimately
beaten on penalties by Redhill.
As Ascot enjoy a third season in the Combined Counties League, everyone hopes for a safe and consistent campaign,
and if silverware comes with it then that will surely be a bonus in current times!
