Introduction to the Town
If you visit just one place in the Cotswolds, the charming, small market town of
Chipping Campden should be it. Its gently curving and unspoilt High Street is a
masterpiece of mellow stone.
From the splendour of St James’ Church, one of the Cotswolds finest wool churches
to one of Campden’s oldest buildings, Grevel House, there are more
than two hundred listed buildings in Chipping Campden and there are many
buildings associated with the Arts and Crafts and the Guild of Handicraft movement.
Visitors with special interests in architectural and social history,
as well as arts and crafts, love Campden but, essentially, it is a relaxing place which
offers great hotels, restaurants, shops and so much else of interest for longer stay as
well as day visitors.
Cotswold stone, centuries of fine craftsmanship and a rich social history endow
Campden with an extraordinary and beautiful built heritage. History lingers
here, and the town has a timeless sanctuary-like quality. A well-founded sense of
community life and pride in this still thriving small town adds to its charm.
“Five roads lead into Campden. Whichever way you come, or wherever you stand on the
low hills that all but ring the little town, the glory of the Perpendicular tower of St. James’
Church will catch your eye.” - Col G. S. Powell - author
Restaurants,
Cafés and
Pubs
Chipping Campden seems to attract
excellent chefs from far and wide,
bringing with them a rich variety
of influences. The result is some
exceptional restaurants, all within
walking distance, right in the heart
of Campden.
With excellent local produce to work
with, you can eat extremely well in
Campden, and there are many pubs
and bars where you can chat over
a drink.
There is no better way to meet local
characters than around the bar of
a Campden pub or inn. These great
British institutions have been around
for the last 900 years and they
still form the thriving centre of the
community in Cotswold villages and
market towns.
A delight in Campden is to wander
into one of the many coffee shops
and tea rooms for a morning coffee
and pastry, either with friends or to
read the newspapers.
If you can tear yourself away from
Campden itself, you will find a wealth
of great restaurants within a short
drive of Campden. There are even
pubs you can walk to across the
fields from Campden.
Glorious Food...
The Cotswolds is an agricultural area and its food producers offer specialities
including superb cheeses, wines, fruits, vegetables, juices, biscuits, beers, and
the famous Cotswold Lamb.
There are many farm shops and farmers’ markets in and around Campden
where you can buy local produce and there are producers to visit; perhaps a
brewery visit, a wine tasting, or a visit to a local farm food shop.
The famous Pudding Club is in the next village of Mickleton.
Chipping Campden is famous for producing sprouts and other vegetables,
whilst the Vale of Evesham is celebrated for the well-known asparagus
festival in Badsey. The Market Garden of England is at the foot of the
dramatic escarpment the far side of Dover’s Hill.
Bee keeping, cider and gin making and other traditional country activities
remain popular in the area.
www.chippingcampdenonline.org 11

Chipping Campden
“Nothing much is known about life
in Campden before the Romans
came, although Neolithic, Bronze
and Iron Age remains abound
locally. We also have Roman roads
all around, from the Fosse Way
(A429) to the east, and Ryknild
Street and Buckle Street to the
west, as well as evidence of Roman
settlements all over the area.”
We have unsubstantiated evidence
that a council of Saxon kings was
held here around 689. It is reputed
to have been a meeting place for
the Saxons of the Widless Hundred
possibly at the Kiftsgate Stone,
about which little is known, which
sits quietly in the woods above
the town.
Local place names give us a little
more substantial evidence, as most
local names, including Campden,
are of Saxon origin. The Domesday
Book records that the Manor &
Village (now Broad Campden)
previously belonged to King Harold.
100 years later this was granted
to Hugh De Gondeville and he is
reputed to have created Campden’s
mile-long High St. with its
characteristic bulge providing space
for a market place created when
the town’s first charter was granted
in 1186 (and Chipping – meaning
market – was added).
The hills that surround Campden
on three sides proved ideal for
sheep and Cotswold wool was soon
considered amongst the finest
in Europe. Chipping Campden
became a major centre of the wool
trade with purchasers coming from
as far as Italy. The wealthy wool
merchants built houses here, two
still survive in Grevel House and
Woolstaplers Hall and money was
provided to rebuild the church,
which is now considered one of the
three finest “wool churches” in the
Cotswolds, it contains the oldest
surviving priest’s cope from the
14th century. The unique Altar
Frontals C1500
were copied by
command of
Queen Mary for
the High Altar of
Westminster for
the Coronation
Ceremony in
1912.
12 www.chippingcampdenonline.org

A Brief History...
The manor was bought in 1609 by
Sir Baptist Hicks, a wealthy London
textile merchant and moneylender.
He built a superb house here using
the local limestone and gave many
gifts to the town and church,
including the Market Hall and
the Almshouses. The house was
partially destroyed by the Royalist
garrison about 1645.
After the death of Cromwell,
Charles II was restored to the
throne and a most intriguing event
took place. In 1660, the estate
steward went missing whilst out
collecting rents. A manservant
(together with brother and mother)
was eventually charged with murder
(even without the body), after
2 trials they were convicted and
executed. A year later the Steward
returned with a tale of abduction,
piracy, slavery and eventual escape.
It became known as “The Campden
Wonder”.
Many of the stone façades of the
High Street houses were added
or improved during the 1700s and
1800s when the town continued
to prosper. Some of these houses
bear dates, not of their original
foundation, but of when these
new fashionably decorated fronts
were built.
After the decline in wool, the
town was briefly revived by the
introduction of silk throwing
(or spinning) in the Old Silk Mill.
It gave much needed employment
to the poor until the industry
collapsed following a trade
agreement with France around 1860.
Just outside the town stands Burnt
Norton, where, in 1741, the Lord of
the Manor set fire to the grandest
of mansions which he had built for
the housemaid with whom he was
infatuated. When she abandoned
him, he was penniless and drunk
and died in the inferno. T S Eliot,
whilst walking in the grounds nearly
200 years later was moved to
compose part of his Four Quartets:
Burnt Norton.
www.chippingcampdenonline.org 13

Dovers Hill
The town remained small and was
affected in the late 1800s by the
agricultural depression.
In 1902 its fortunes changed yet
again when C.R. Ashbee brought
the Guild of Handicraft here from
London. Followers of William
Morris, they brought new crafts to
the town, taking over the disused
Silk Mill in Sheep Street.
See our stunning display of
jewellery, silver, pottery, sculptures
and carvings, and more, from both
our own and other collections.
Events are held throughout the
year and the Museum shop offers a
range of original and individual gifts
by local designer/makers together
with a good selection of books on
Arts & Crafts and related subjects.
The Traditional Cotswold Olimpick
Games, founded by Robert Dover
over 400 years ago, are still held
each year on Dover’s Hill above
Chipping Campden. However the
Wednesday Market, authorised by
the Royal Charter, was discontinued
after WWII. Together with
Scuttlebrook Wake (itself going
Today exhibitions there and in Court
Barn Museum display their work
and that of their successors.
Court Barn celebrates talented
designers and craftspeople who
have worked in Chipping Campden
and the north Cotswolds since the
beginning of the twentieth century.
Find out at the museum how
Chipping Campden became a
gathering place for designers
and craftspeople of national and
international reputation, including
C.R. Ashbee, Gordon Russell, Hart
Silversmiths and Robert Welch.
back to the early 1800s), held
the next day, they form quite a
weekend.
Visitors now find an historic town in
very much its original setting, little
spoiled by new building breaking the
interface between the town and the
surrounding fields and hills. Much
of the centre is a Conservation Area
and the surrounding countryside
is designated as an Area of
Outstanding Natural Beauty. Yet it is
as lively and forward looking as it has
always been, still very much a part of
the century in which it is living.
14 www.chippingcampdenonline.org

Traditional & Historic Activities
Robert Dover’s Cotswold Olimpick
Games, which celebrated its 400th
anniversary in 2012, are traditionally
held on the Friday night following the
Spring Bank Holiday. The games are
unique. There is nothing like them for
their setting, continuity and forms of
entertainment. They are mentioned
in accounts of the Cotswolds, social
and literary histories of Britain, and
in worldwide surveys of the Olympic
movement. For more information visit:
www.olimpickgames.co.uk
The Campden Mummers have recently
been revived, after an absence of
some years, performing their unique
seasonal folk play, sometimes in the
street but more usually as house-tohouse
visits and in public houses.
Scuttlebrook Wake takes place on the
day after Dover’s Games and it too
has a long history. It is a traditional
Whitsun Club Wake, it has been
as one of the unbroken traditional
sides. Their dances are unique and
traditional to the town. They can
often be seen dancing in the town.
The Cart Wash
celebrated in its present form since
1938 when the first Scuttlebrook Wake
Queen was crowned.
For more information see:
www.chippingcampdenonline.org
Chipping Campden Morrismen, dating
from the early 1700’s, are recognised
Opposite the Almshouses is a stonelined
cart wash, the “New Pool”,
made in the early 1830’s to replace
the “Town Pool” that had existed
for centuries at the junction of High
Street, Leasebourne and Church
Street. The Scuttle Brook flowed over
the road at this point and all carts
and other wheeled traffic coming in
ran through it. It was, unsurprisingly,
highly insanitary. This is one of the last
examples of its kind in the country.
Quirky Campden
Punk
Conduit House
The Millennium
Sign Snail
Punk - created by local
craftsman, the late
Ian Ashhurst, it has
achieved a degree
of notoriety, as he is
featured in quite a few
guide books. He can be
found in the High Street,
by the door of the
Old School House.
Conduit House - not a
house, but resembles a
small lockup used to
house drunks overnight.
Built circa 1615 as a
collection point for water
from the many natural
springs overlooking
Campden, it provided
water for Old Campden
House as well as the
Almshouses.
The Four Cross Hands or Izods Post - has been standing at
the Junction of the A44 with the Road into Campden since
1669. Although it has been replaced over the years, its
original format of iron hands with pointing fingers atop a
wooden post has been maintained. The original destination
spellings of Woster, Warwick, Oxford and Gloster plus their
distances have been kept although seemingly inaccurate.
However, in the 17th Century the local mile was 1.5 times
that of the modern statute mile.
The Village Pump
The Village Pump -
stands at the junction of
the High St, Leysbourne
and Church St. This is
a replica of the original,
when in 1832 the cattle
or Scuttlebrook was
covered over. The locals
had no other source of
clean water so the Vicar
arranged for a pump
to be installed.
We have a local version
of the old folk song
“The Village Pump”.
The Millennium Sign Snail - if you examine the sign
very carefully you can see the snail as it crawls up the
ironwork. This is the signature of the metalworker…
Jeff Humpage, who created the sign for Campden’s
millennium celebrations and if you look carefully on the
railings leading up to the south door of
St James’ church you can find one and
there is another one inside.
There are also some more to
find in the high street.
The Four Cross
Hands or
Izods Post
16 www.chippingcampdenonline.org

The Kiftsgate Stone
The Kiftsgate Stone - is a holed standing stone
which lies next to the Cotswold Way, near Dover’s
Hill. The stone stands on the site of a former ‘Moot
Site’ where local people met to discuss tribal issues.
Kifts’ is thought to be derived from the Old English
‘cyft’ meaning ‘meeting or conference’ and so
‘Kiftsgate’ would imply this was a gap or gateway
where meetings were held (which may also explain
the perforation if the stone supported a gate) thus
making this the moot for the hundred of Kiftsgate.
This is a busy road, please take care if crossing to
view the stone which is inside the hedge line.
Sun Dials -
A Sun Dial shows time by a shadow cast by
the Sun. The High St has 7 of the vertical
type, which is unusual for a town of this size.
We have a booklet in the Information Centre
showing their locations together with some
other Quirky features in the High St.
Sun Dials
Town Hall Clock Tower, it leans a bit as the
Cupola is too heavy, it is not known for certain
where it came from, but it is very similar to the one
on Burnt Norton House.
Tarot Cards
Tarot Cards - infamous occultist and
author, Aleister Crowley, spent quite
a bit of time in Chipping Campden,
whilst he was liaising with artist Lady
Frieda Harris. They were working
on a design for a new deck of Tarot
cards. Although Crowley died in
1947, the cards were eventually
published in 1970. They have
become one of the most popular
Specialist Shopping
When so many High Streets are virtual clones of one another with
national chains jockeying for position, it is refreshing to visit a High Street
composed predominantly of independent shops.
Shopping is easy and a real pleasure in Chipping Campden. Residents
are delighted that the majority of their shopping can be done within
the town and there is plenty of interest to the visitor; from the smallest
memento to a work of art to remember your visit. Whether it is a special
bottle of wine, something for the home, clothes, or award-winning
cutlery, you will find them all, and plenty more, in Chipping Campden.
There are a number of specialist food stores, general stores, newsagents,
milliners, hairdressers, jewellers, and fashion shops, as well as the usual
solicitors, financial institutions, estate agencies, computer sales, repairs
and business hub and local businesses.
Campden is also an outstanding location for weddings. We have
beauticians, hairdressers, make up and nail boutiques, two specialist
florists, hat shop as well as a Spa. There is also considerable choice
of accommodation.
Open Gardens Weekend
Mid-June
This is an annual event held over
a June weekend, which is always
extremely popular with both visitors
and locals.
It is an opportunity for us to showcase
our beautiful Town.
It has been running for more than 35
years, and is a means of fundraising
for charity. For the last few years the
chosen charity has been Campden
Home Nursing Trust, which provides
palliative nursing care for the
terminally ill who wish to be cared for
at home. There is no charge to any
family for the care given.
There are usually around 30 large and
small gardens, open over two days
for people to enjoy. You can visit for
just one day, or take in all the gardens
over the whole weekend. In addition
to the delightful and very varied
gardens, you can enjoy tea and cake,
served throughout the day, at several
locations. There is an opportunity to
purchase plants you may have seen
growing. Many of the gardens invite
you to just sit and relax and admire
some very attractive surroundings.
Further information on Campden
Home Nursing can be found at
Cotswold Gardens
The Cotswolds are blessed with
a temperate climate, and local
inhabitants have taken advantage
of this to create gardens in a rich
variety of styles and sizes.
Many a delightful garden can be
glimpsed over wisteria-clad dry
stone walls simply by walking
through the villages in the area.
Many of the gardens in Campden
are open to the public once a year on
the Open Gardens Weekend.
The delightful hidden garden that is
the E.H.Wilson Memorial garden can
be found in the heart of Campden
and celebrates the life and work of
one of the foremost plant collectors
of his time, who was born here in 1876.
He introduced around 1200 species
of trees and shrubs and collected
over 100,000
herbarium
specimens.
The garden was
opened in 1984
by Roy Lancaster
the well-known
broadcaster and
plant hunter.
Local Villages
Ebrington village is located 2 miles east
of Chipping Campden. A beautifull small
village overlooking the valley through
which the little Knee Brook flows on
its way to join the River Stour . The
locals still call the village ‘Yubberton’
and has several attractive thatched
stone cottages at the side of its little
sunken roads. The village of Ebrington
shines like a jewel in a golden crown,
its narrow lanes and tiny streets are
aglow with beautiful mellow Cotswold
stone houses and cottages. Some of the
cottages are quite old and are topped
with thick golden thatch, while others
hide beneath steep tiles with slender tall
chimneys.
Paxford village is located 2.5 miles
east of Chipping Campden. Paxford
is a delightful quiet village centrally
positioned for easy access to the well
known Cotswolds. With an abundance
of public footpaths providing beautiful
walks, Paxford is surrounded by
beautiful Cotswold countryside of rolling
hills and an ideal place for those seeking
a peacefull and tranquil environment.
Located 3 miles North of Chipping
Campden, Gloucestershire.
Mickleton lies in a fine setting
immediately beneath the Cotswold edge
overlooked by Meon Hill. It has several
attractive stone houses and cottages in
addition to those of thatch and halftimber.
The little Victorian Memorial
Fountain close by the Three Ways
Hotel (home of the Pudding Club) is an
interesting feature by William Burges,
the architect of Cardiff Castle and Castle
Coch, two excellent examples of the
High Victorian Gothic. The church has
a fine 14th-century tower and spire,
and a most unusual 17th-century twostoreyed
porch. Inside will be found a
12th-century crucifix or rood over the
north aisle chapel alter. A nice circular
walk leads up the hill from the church to
Kiftsgate, and Hidcote Manor Gardens.
Located 1 mile South of Chipping
Campden.
Broad Campden is tucked away in a
small valley, with woods never far away
- a beautiful and exquisite little village
with the majority of the old houses and
cottages having thatched roofs. This
village has to be one of the best in the
Cotswolds. The village also has a small
Victorian chapel and an 17th Century
Quaker meeting house with many of
the original furnishings intact. Charles
Ashbee converted a derelict Norman
chapel into a house for himself soon
after his arrival in the area in 1905.
Saintbury is located between the larger
settlements of Willersey and Weston
sub Edge. The name Saintbury is
thought to come from Swain meaning
villager and Bury meaning hill or Burth
meaning fort, which given the village’s
age and hillside location, makes perfect
sense. The church of St Nicholas’ earliest
feature is a sundial thought to be from
the 11th century.
The villages of Weston and Aston sub
Edge are located at the foot of Dover’s
Hill bordering the Vale of Evesham.
The houses within the villages are
made up of predominantly 17th century
farmhouses and cottages in Cotswold
stone.
