Connectivity enables people to plug into global flows of information, communication and services. In tandem with technological advances – such as AI and IoT – and increased mobile usage, connectivity demand and service expectations have risen significantly, with both businesses and consumers asking for very high speed, low latency and secure networks. Tele-health, teleworking, and tele-education are all made possible via optimum use of telecom services. A world of opportunities to serve our people, bridge the digital divide widened by the pandemic, enable innovation and new business models, and strengthen our country’s posture as an international services hub. CyprusProfile Digital Series Telecoms & Satellite Communication mation and industrial digital adoption, address the ongoing depopulation and increase the business attractiveness of rural areas, create new employment opportunities and address environmental considerations. To further stimulate demand and supply, the government is implementing different measures under our new National Broadband Plan, aimed at increasing coverage and take-up in both fixed and mobile ultra-fast networks, facilitating private investments and advancing public interventions in areas beyond the interest of private investors. Fully utilising EU funding tools such as the Connecting Europe Facility and the Resilience and Recovery Fund can be instrumental in our journey towards a gigabit society. In specific, via our national RRP, we have included investments of around €60 million to expand very high-capacity networks in underserved areas – to every city and village where such networks do not exist – enhance building cabling and encourage take up of end users, as well as develop a new submarine cable to connect Cyprus with Greece, offering significantly higher performance and capacity and ensuring increased levels of security and resilience for the entire telecommunications infrastructure of the island. To further strengthen our digital connectivity and capitalising on a strong geostrategic location, we also place great emphasis on satellite communications, an indispensable part of most telecommunications networks of today. Cyprus has developed a simple, flexible, and competitive licensing model which successfully allowed it to issue eight authorisations resulting in three satellites in operation, while also hosting two highly equipped, state-of-the-art satellite ground stations, operated and maintained by experienced, renowned companies. Attracting considerable investment, Cyprus has created a growing satellite network, which has also spurred academic interest, resulting in the establishment of Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence, engaged in Earth Observation, space technology and geospatial information research. Cyprus wants and can be part of the space revolution, forming synergies at regional and international level, and capitalising on a strong collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), which will soon lead to our upcoming accession to the ESA Convention as an Associate Member. We need to stay ahead of developments. As more people and things connect, greater demand will continue to be placed on the accessibility, speed, reliability and safety of all communication networks.
