Welcome to the stallion edition of British 

Breeder magazine. As the breeding 

season gets underway, thoughts are 

turning to the decisions that need to 

be made and careful plans are being 

made for the next generation of sport 

horses. 

This issue is eagerly anticipated with 

such a wonderful selection of stallions 

showcased from across the disciplines 

and we look forward to meeting these 

super sires up close and personal at the 

Stallion Event. 

We are also looking forward to seeing 

the delightful selection of young horses 

forward for the Equine Bridge. This 

two-day performance evaluation gives 

young horses a chance to show their 

potential under saddle, with the top 

scorers in each discipline taking away a 

valuable £1000 bursary as well as 

discipline membership for a year.

between like-minded charities and 

organisations. We aim to facilitate 

research and education to help 

breeders make informed decisions 

which will result in the breeding of 

quality, fit for purpose youngstock, 

no matter the discipline or the

Update 

From the 15th January 2022, to 

export horses abroad you will 

require a CPH number. This CPH 

number will be required to be 

inputted on to the Defra Health 

Certificates issued by your official 

vet (OV). 

The form that will need to be completed 

and returned can be found courtesy of 

British Showjumping by following the link 

below, and should be returned to Equine. 

Registration@apha.gov.uk. CPH numbers 

should be received from Defra within 2-3 

days after submitting the form.

Badminton Box 

Office Opens 

The countdown to Badminton 

begins now. The Box Office has 

opened for Badminton Horse Trials, 

bringing with it some New Year 

cheer and the promise of a thrilling 

return to top-class competition in 

Britain. 

There will not only be the opportunity to 

watch the Olympic and European 

champions in action on home ground, but 

also the very best international 

combinations vying to impress ahead 

of the World Championships in Italy in 

September. 

“Badminton means the world to riders, it’s 

our ‘Wimbledon’, the one everyone wants 

to win and we’re all so looking forward to 

having it back,” said Tom McEwen MBE. 

A major change for 2022 is that parking 

and admission tickets can only be bought 

in advance — there will be no tickets 

available at the gate. This includes 

Saturday’s Cross Country, when there will 

be improved new traffic access. 

Badminton’s new live-streaming service, 

will mean that everyone can keep up 

with the action whether attending as a 

spectator or watching from home. Now 

available for purchase via the Badminton 

TV page of the website for a discounted 

annual fee of £14.99; if purchased from 

1st April onwards the cost will be £19.99 

and, even if you are unable to watch it 

live, you won’t miss a beat of the action, 

as it will be possible to view on demand 

post-event. 

“We are hugely excited at the prospect 

of providing a wonderful five days of 

competition and seeing everyone back 

at Badminton again,” said Horse Trials 

Director Jane Tuckwell. “We know how 

much the event means to riders, owners, 

sponsors, trade stand holders and 

spectators, and we are doing our best to 

ensure everyone has a thoroughly 

enjoyable visit after a two-year-break.

Memorial Bursary 

Supporting British Bred Young Event 

Horses. British breeding were extremely 

proud to be named as a recipient of 

donations in memory of the late Tim 

Holderness Roddam. Tim was a 

passionate and knowledgeable 

advocate of eventing for many years, 

and a great supporter of British 

Breeding. 

It was fitting that the fund should be 

used to support breeders of young sport 

horses and ponies. A JustGiving page 

was set up in Tim’s memory, and 100% 

of the funds will be used to support the 

further development of the top 

scoring event horse in the British 

Breeding Equine Bridge young horse 

performance assessments. The top 

scoring event horse at the Equine 

Bridge on 11/12 February will receive 

a bursary of £1000 to be used to 

further develop their training.

Charley Hamilton wins SEIB Winter 

Novice Qualifier at Northcote Stud 

Charley Hamilton wins SEIB 

Winter Novice Qualifier at 

Northcote Stud in January. 

With a turn of speed, Charley Hamilton 

from Milltimber, Aberdeenshire claimed 

first place in the seventh SEIB Winter 

Novice Qualifier of the season held at 

Northcote Stud on Sunday, riding 

Caroline Ironside’s 6 year old chestnut 

mare, Loretta Blue MFS. 

Out of thirty-six starters, eighteen 

navigated a first round clear with just 

four going on to produce a double clear. 

Charley Hamilton rode a lightning fast 

round to stop the clock on her winning 

double clear in 28.80 seconds. 

MFS Loretta Blue (Zirocco Blue VDL 

x Goodtimes) is owned and bred by 

Caroline Ironside at MFS Stud Farm, a 

highly regarded sport horse breeding 

establishment breeding mainly KWPN, 

Oldenburg and Hanoverian dressage, 

showjumping and event horses. As a 

foal, Caroline described Loretta blue 

as “a phenomenal daughter of the 

International Grand Prix stallion 

ZIROCCO BLUE VDL. Her dam has 

produced numerous horses competing 

in both dressage and showjumping 

and comes from the amazing mare line 

of CORLAND VDL, one of the 

best Holstein mare lines. Her dam 

RETINA-S comes from a top 

showjumping breeder in Holland and 

the whole line is renowned for producing 

horses to the very highest levels in sport. 

Even at a young age this filly possesses 

all the attributes to make a top class 

showjumping horse and will make an 

exceptional addition to our breeding 

lines for the future”. 

The mare has already got a number of 

wins under her belt, including the 5 year 

old young horse qualifier at the Daimler 

Foundation at Morris Equestrian in July, 

as well as being placed in Newcomers 

classes with big double clears. 

“Delighted to watch this combination 

grow together”, commented Caroline on 

facebook. 

The stud is located in a beautiful part of 

the North East of Scotland, overlooking 

the Moray Firth/North Sea, and has 

bred Champion foals and youngstock 

that have topped the BEF Futurity, Annual 

Breed Shows, Young Horse 

Championships and County Shows in the 

UK and USA. 

Hot on their heels and taking the runner 

up spot was Jessica Quine and Lalu 

TW securing a double clear in 29.47 

second. 

National 

Equine Forum 

announces 

30th Birthday 

programme 

The National Equine Forum (NEF) has 

announced an exciting and practical 

programme to celebrate its 30th birthday 

in March 2022. Currently the intention 

is to hold a hybrid event at the Institution 

of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), with 

a reduced number of attendees and 

the opportunity for others to join via the 

livestreaming, on Thursday 3rd March 

2022. 

The day will include a special celebratory 

review of the past 30 years of NEF 

as well as consideration of what the 

next 30 years may have in store. Other 

highlights include a debate on workforce 

sustainability within the equine sector, 

Defra’s view of the industry, a look at 

equine herd health status and the latest 

on anthelmintic resistance. 


Tim Brigstocke, Chairman of the NEF 

said: “In this, our 30th year, and a time 

at which the industry continues to face 

challenges imposed by the pandemic, 

we have tried to cover important 

practical issues within the sector as well 

as sharing the latest knowledge and 

news. We hope the day will be 

engaging, informative and fun and that 

our hybrid format will once again 

broaden our reach around the globe.” 

The Equine Industry in a Changing 

World will include contributions from 

The Rt Hon Lord Benyon, Parliamentary 

Under Secretary of State, Defra, Robert 

Huey, Chief Veterinary Officer Northern 

Ireland Executive and Dr Martin Blake, 

Chief Veterinary Officer, Department 

of Agriculture, Food and the Marine,

Equine Health will see David Mountford, 

Chair of the British Horse Council and Dr 

Richard Newton discussing topical 

aspects of disease prevention and 

control. 

Workforce sustainability in the equine 

sector will deliver a real-world insight 

into the roles of humans and horses with 

contributions from the British Grooms 

Association, the Equestrian Employers 

Association, the racing industry and 

riding schools, along with equestrian 

colleges and universities. The session 

will close with a panel discussion and 

questions from the audience. 

Equine anthelmintic resistance will take 

a detailed look at the growing threat of 

resistance to the equine wormers that we 

have available with presentations from 

Dr Claire Stratford and Dr Alison Pyatt at 

the Veterinary Medicines 

Directorate. The responsibilities of 

owners, vets, and RAMAs/SQPs in 

helping to slow resistance will then be 

discussed, with the inclusion of case 

studies and opportunities for delegate 

participation via Slido. 

Breeding changes in the last 30 years 

will be explored by Tullis Matson in the 

Memorial lecture. The day will close 

with the announcement of the Sir Colin 

Spedding Award 2022 winner. 

Q&A opportunities have been built in 

at the end of all the main sessions to 

give the audience a chance to engage 

with the discussions. Questions can be

Equestrian sport named in 

Olympic programme for 

Los Angeles 2028 

digital platforms. This significant and 

rapid growth in the change of the digital 

landscape, meant more fans were able 

to experience the Games, with greater 

accessibility to more content than ever 

before. 

The FEI President has welcomed 

the announcement by the 

International Olympic Committee 

(IOC) that equestrian sport will 

be proposed for inclusion in the 

Olympic programme for the Los 

Angeles 2028 Games. 

During the IOC Executive Board meeting 

in December, the initial list of 

twenty-eight sports to be recommended 

the LA28 Initial Sports Programme, which 

includes equestrian, was agreed and is 

now subject to final approval at the IOC 

Session in February 2022. Discussions 

also focussed on defining the process for 

finalising the disciplines in each sport 

offering early certainty to athletes, 

National Olympic Committees (NOCs), 

International Federations (IFs) and the 

Organising Committee for the Olympic 

Games (OCOG). 

Universality, integrity and fairness, 

gender equality and popularity were 

highlighted as key requirements of the 

evaluation criteria which will be used to 

determine the disciplines and events for 

the programme. Athlete safety, 

environmental sustainability and keeping 

the sport relevant to youth were also 

reiterated as significant factors. 

“I am confident equestrian sport, a 

celebration of the unique bond between 

human and equine athletes, has its place 

in the Los Angeles 2028 

Olympic Games programme”, FEI 

President Ingmar De Vos said. 

The IOC also published figures in 

December which revealed the Tokyo 

2020 Games reached a global 

broadcast audience of more than three 

billion people across linear TV and 

“We need to guarantee global visibility 

of our sport in the media and digital 

platforms, and continue to showcase 

relevant content and entice new fans. 

We have this opportunity every four 

years and consolidating equestrian sport 

in the Olympic Movement is crucial for 

the FEI and for our community” FEI 

President Ingmar De Vos continued. 

“Another key focus for the FEI is Youth 

development. Keeping the youth 

engaged in equestrian sport and 

inspiring new generations to make the 

Olympic Games their goal. We have 

robust development programmes around 

the world targeting the next generation 

of athletes, but also fans and industry 

professionals, because equestrian sport 

is a way of life that is multifaceted and 

extremely diverse.” 

The approval of the Initial Sports 

Programme will take place in February 

2022 and the finalisation of the events 

and athlete quota will be confirmed in 

December 2024, following the Olympic 

Games Paris 2024. 

Using the wrong 

wormer can 

increase the risk 

of potentially 

fatal disease 

Zoetis Inc. is advising horse 

owners to ensure they use a 

wormer that is indicated to treat 

encysted small redworm this 

winter. 

“You may think any wormer will do for 

the treatment of the dangerous encysted 

small redworm but using one that does 

not specifically treat the encysted stages 

during late autumn or winter can actually 

increase the risk of a horse with a high 

encysted small redworm burden 

developing larval cyathostominosis, 

which can be fatal,” explains Zoetis vet 

Wendy Talbot. 

All horses of more than six months of age 

should be blood tested by a vet to 

determine the presence of an encysted 

small redworm burden or treated with a 

wormer that is licensed to treat 

encysted small redworm in autumn/ 

winter, regardless of their faecal worm 

egg count. 

“It’s imperative that the wormer used is 

indicated for encysted small redworm,” 

advises Wendy. “This is because wormers 

such as those containing ivermectin, 

pyrantel or single dose fenbendazole 

will remove the adult stages of small 

redworm from the gut which then leaves 

room for the encysted stages in the gut 

wall to emerge and take their place. It 

is this en masse emergence which can 

cause severe damage to the gut resulting 

in clinical signs such as diarrhoea, colic 

and even death” 

Moxidectin is the only active ingredient 

licensed to treat encysted small redworm 

in a single dose. Because moxidectin 

acts against the encysted stages before 

they have a chance to emerge, it is less 

likely that larvae in the gut wall will be 

able to cause this effect. 

A five-day course of fenbendazole is 

also licensed to treat encysted small 

redworm but there is widespread 

evidence of small redworm resistance 

to fenbendazole, including the five-day 

dose so a resistance test is 

recommended before using it. 

“A practical and cost-effective solution 

to targeting parasites of concern over 

winter, may be to combine a bot treatment 

with encysted small redworm and 

tapeworm treatments using a single dose 

of moxidectin and praziquantel,” says 

Wendy.

Zackorado is a very attractive stallion 

with a super temperament. He was 

crowned Champion Stallion at 

the stallion licensing in 2018, and 

in 2019 he completed his 14-day 

performance test with a total score of 

8.34 points. Zackorado was placed 

second at the mid-selection for 4y/o 

dressage horses in 2020 with the 

marks: 8.8 for canter, 9.0 for walk,

He is a successful athlete in his own 

right, being a stakes winner with total 

winnings of £181,286 from just 

a few starts and in the 2010 Italian 

Derby he came from the back of the 

field to take second, just missing 

out on first place. 

He returned to training after time off 

for covering and finished third in a 

maiden hurdle at Limerick in 2013. 

This was his first run back and 

demonstrates that not only does he 

have speed he also 

has a super jump. 

He has a superb pedigree containing 

Northern Dancer and not one, but 

two crosses of the famous Grey 

Sovereign. 

The Grey Sovereign line has been 

extremely influential in infusing 

blood in European warmbloods and 

appears in the pedigree of many top 

show jumpers including Olympians

a rare achievement by becoming 

the highest scoring Futurity Eventing 

youngster in two consequtive years 

as a two year old and three year 

old. He won the Breeders Award 

in 2015 as the highest scoring BEF 

Futurity Overall Event Young stock 

and also the highest scoring Two 

year old scoring a high Elite of 9.08. 

In 2016, he went on to increase 

his scoring to achieve a high Elite 

score of 9.18 and take the Award for 

the highest scoring 3yr old Futurity 

Eventer. In 2020/2021 he has been

Eventing sires and Leprince is his

international eventers (Opposition 

Buzz, Trevalgar II, Ngong Hills,

Beth Bainbridge in Le Mans 

The Elite dressage team is one of the UK’s 

leading competition sales and breeding 

stabled in the U.K. headed up by 

international dressage rider and former 

British championship team member Anna 

Ross. Working in close collaboration with 

Elite Stallions, Newton Stud and Equus 

vets they have an extensive breeding 

program using top sports mares for 

embryo transfer. 

Head rider Beth Bainbridge and 

international Grand Prix competitor Alex 

Baker are key members of the 

management team . Together the team 

produce horses and riders to international 

Championship team levels for sales and 

competition from their base in Devon. 

In 2021 the team had a a vintage year 

with Beth winning the five-year-old 

championship with Newton Tiger and the 

Intermediate Freestyle at Le Mans CDI in 

France with Habouche. Anna had a top 

four placing in the Grand Prix Freestyle 

at the BD National championships and 

second place in Le Mans, France with 

Newton Domino and finished the year 

with victories at the High Profile show 

at Keysoe International with Habouche. 

Alex had a top 4 four placing in the small 

place small final of the World 

Championships for young horses and was 

reserve champion at the BD nationals with 

Newton Tiger. She was selected for the 

Irish European championship team with 

her own horse Dutchman. 

These celebrated sports mares are all part 

of the embryo transfer program and have 

bred over 15 foals between them whilst 

seamlessly continuing their sports careers. 

Anna , Beth and Alex are assisted by a 

team of talented up-and-coming riders 

at Elite Dressage who train and compete 

the sales horses at National level and 

are well on the way becoming serious 

competitors in their own right. 

Beth Bainbridge will be the ride assessor 

for the Equine bridge running forward her 

knowledge of training a myriad of horses 

to Championship level. 

She will present the German Licensing 

champion Blue Hors Zackorado in the 

stallion show as he stands in the UK at 

Elite stallions breeders and ride in the 

masterclass with 5* judge Isobel Wessels.

How does it work? 

For the 2022 season we are delighted 

to announce a very exciting step in our 

studbook development aimed at offering 

our breeders and stallion owners the 

very best service and state-of-the art 

support in breeding talented, healthy 

and happy equine athletes. We will be 

delighted to be working with our friends 

at the KWPN who have been carrying 

out groundbreaking work in developing 

reliable breeding values to promote 

equine health. We are proud to become 

the first UK studbook to offer a DNA test 

to determine a horse’s breeding value for 

osteochondrosis.

The test will be available to AES horses 

The DNA-test requires a hair-sample 

(with roots) that can be taken by your 

vet, for example when they microchip 

your foal and complete the sketch form, 

or by one of our studbook inspectors or 

representatives. You will be notified as 

soon as your results are available, and 

we will send you a report via email or in 

the post. 

You will receive a Genomic Breeding 

Value, which indicates the likelihood of 

your horse having a genetic 

predisposition to develop or potentially 

pass on OCD. If your horse’s Genomic 

Breeding Value OC is higher than 95 he 

or she will become eligible for a Select 

Studbook Health Premium.

We will make the test available to all 

newly licensed stallions as a reliable 

alternative to x-rays. 

Studbook Evaluator Lucy Simpson 

explains: 

“When we see signs of OCD on an 

x-ray, we still cannot know for sure if 

these have developed as a result of a 

heritable propensity to develop the 

disease, or whether this is down to 

environmental or developmental issues. 

This uncertainty can be very frustrating, 

particularly when a horse otherwise 

shows no soundness issues. The test is 

focused on heredity and determines a 

horse’s ability to pass on OC to any 

offspring. We are delighted that the 

DNA test can therefore offer a sensible 

and reliable alternative to assess the 

suitability of breeding animals, stallions 

and broodmares alike.” 

The advantages of DNA testing are 

clear. The test can already be done on a 

foal, which gives owners and breeders 

valuable information about the future 

direction for their horse. The result of the 

DNA test, which is expressed in an easily 

interpreted Genomic Breeding Value 

(GFW OC), has been found by the 

KWPN to be three times more reliable 

for breeding purposes than 

“conventional” assessments. 

What are Breeding Values? 

In order to understand and interpret the 

OCD test results, it is important to 

explore how breeding values are 

calculated, and what they represent. 

Breeding values are calculated by first 

observing a large reference population 

with known phenotypes and 

genotypes, in the case of OCD, 

horses with and without OCD findings. 

By relating detailed DNA profiles of 

horses to their physical properties, we 

can identify correlations, which form the 

basis for understanding the likelihood of 

other horses who carry the same genetic 

markers to develop those same traits, 

i.e. in this instance OCD. 

In order to calculate a breeding value, 

studbooks can use data about a stallion 

or mare’s progeny, including national 

and international performance records 

and linear profiles. 

These can be collated to identify the 

phenotype and performance 

characteristics that the horse appears to 

be most likely to pass on. method used to 

create indices for various characteristics 

for breeding animals within a 

population. A common index is based 

on a deviation from 100, which is the 

population norm so an index of 120 is 

above the norm, whereas an index of 80 

indicates an animal below the norm. 

As the development of OCD in horses is 

also subject to a wide range 

environmental influences, from nutrition 

of the broodmare all the way to 

ongoing management, these values are 

an estimation. 

Since there is large variability among 

individuals - even closely related 

individuals - large data sets are required 

to develop the benchmark index. 

Historically, studbooks have been 

working with their own separate data 

sets. As many of the most successful and 

popular stallions are graded with 

multiple studbooks, and produce 

offspring all over the world, it makes 

perfect sense to work together across 

different studbooks to share data and 

experiences.

“The fragmentation and relatively small 

breeding populations of sports horses in 

the UK have been a challenge when it 

comes to calculating reliable breeding 

values and promote genomic selection 

as a way of developing sports horse 

breeding in this country. 

This is why we have invested a lot of 

energy in supporting cross-studbook 

initiatives, such as the British Breeding 

Futurity. Our OCD DNA testing project 

with the KWPN is another great example 

how we can take leaps ahead by 

working together.”

First BWBS Licenced Stallion 

we know today. Renamed in 2005 when 

Debbie and her husband retired and 

moved to South Africa, the past nearly 

half-century has seen a total of well over 

420 stallions graded with the Society 

(including 48 British Sports Horses and 

12 ponies) with an increasing number 

of them being British-bred (including a 

number with BHHS passports), although 

imported stallions or British bred 

stallions with foreign passports still tend 

to predominate, now the foreign 

studbooks are unable to register in the 

UK, British studbooks will take the credit 

for these home bred animals. The mare 

studbook Is equally distinguished and 

for a mare to be given Select status in 

the WBSUK mare’s book is an honour 

indeed. The most recent WBSUK grading 

took place on 6th November 2021 at 

Home Farm, Theddingworth. Judged by 

Katy Holder-Vale and Hans Heinrich 

Bruning. Eleven stallions came forward 

for assessment.

With the Warmblood Breeders Studbook 

UK (formerly the British Warm-Blood 

Society) now fast approaching its 45th 

birthday it is probably a good time to 

remind people of its origins and early 

years as many of its ground-breaking 

innovations are now regarded as almost 

commonplace by breeders of sports 

horses and ponies in the UK. 

Founded in 1977 by American-born Mrs 

Debbie Wallin and her Swedish husband 

Anders when they moved to the UK from 

Denmark and found no studbook in the 

country would accept their performance 

tested Danish, Hannoverian and 

Swedish warmblood mares into their 

breeding registers or consider their 

outstanding young Danish Warmblood 

colt Atlantus as a breeding stallion, the 

then British Warm-Blood Society soon 

found favour with a top class group of 

competition-minded breeders including 

Jane Kidd (Maple Stud with Maple Duel 

and Maple courier), Jennie 

Loriston-Clarke (Catherston Stud with 

Dutch Courage and Dutch Gold), Fred 

Welch (owner of the international 

showjumper Interpol) and Marie Smith 

(owner of the first stallion in the BWBS 

book, the Hannoverian Furisto). These 

pioneers were soon followed by Mrs E 

M Kirby and her well-known 100-day 

tested Hannoverian stallion Akkord and 

the Holme Grove Stud with their first 

stallion Istanbul. 

With such an illustrious beginnings it is 

perhaps not surprising that the past 45 

years have been starred with many firsts. 

These include being the first UK studbook: 

• To open its graded studbooks for 

stallions and mares to all recognised 

warmblood and sports horse and 

sports pony breeds 

• To hold public gradings for stallions 

and mares with publicly viewable 

marks and full grading critiques 

• To promote showing on the triangle 

and the wearing of whites when 

presenting stock for judging 

• To use internationally recognised 

grading judges from other European 

studbooks 

• To recognise competition 

performance as part of a 

progressive grading structure. 

From these beginnings has grown the 

Warmblood Breeders Studbook UK that

2022 

The first major event for the NPS will be 

the 2022 AGM that will take place on 

19th February in Warwick. At the AGM 

the winners of the 2021 Stallion Awards 

will be recognised and owners invited to 

come forward and receive their prizes. 

The awards are calculated based on 

results achieved by progeny in both 

ridden and in hand classes at recognised 

Premium shows in the 2021 season. 

The overall champion is Mrs MacInnes’s 

late Kilvington Scoundel, still a much 

sort after sire through frozen semen and 

he was also the leading sire of 148cm 

ponies. Previous champion Cusop 

Dimension, also now retired from 

breeding, was reserve overall champion 

and the leading sire of 138cm ponies. 

Cusop Dimension is owned by Mr 

Pitman and has been the senior sire at 

Wycroft Stud for many years. 

The leading sire of 128cm ponies was 

Hightopps Jet owned by Miss Roberts. 

The Stanley Grange Trophy is awarded 

to the leading young stallion 8 years and 

under and has proved to be an 

excellent indicator to future leading sires. 

The award this year has been made to 

Ian Boylan’s home bred Alonby 

Chardonnier, a successful competitor 

himself and now producing some very 

exciting youngstock. 

Results at Premium shows also feed into 

the Stallion Premium programme which 

was a new incentive in 2021. Premiums 

are awarded annually to stallions who 

have offspring successful in breeding 

classes.

in sport. International Grand Prix rider 

Sonnar Murray-Brown already has a 

tremendous partnership with his Latimer

added three new Trakehners to his string. 

The 4 year old Samba by Millennium 

, St.Pr.u.Pr.St. Herbstrot by All Inklusive 

and the licensed stallion Sinatra by 

Honoré du Soir have all arrived in 

Gloucestershire and we are very excited 

to follow their progress. 

Although the competition season has 

only just got underway within the last 

week, Godington Stud have already got 

some dressage wins under their belts 

with licensed stallion Godington Utah 

winning at Elementary and Godington

The SHB(GB) graded Thoroughbred stallion Recharge 

(Cape Cross-Robellino) now stands at new Hill Farm, Worsely. 

Who would have thought a year ago 

that we would once again looking 

forward to spring when we can all start 

getting out and about again – and 

hopefully some promise of blue sky 

which has been in short supply the last 

month or so. Despite the problems last 

year threw at us all SHB(GB) managed 

to continue with a programme of mare, 

stallion and our new foal gradings. All 

things considered our grading days 

were successful with a pleasing overall 

number of horses and foals forward. 

Hopefully we will see and grade even 

more mares and foals this year. 

Stallion Grading 

Due to lockdown and a continuing 

uncertainty throughout the year we 

continued to grade stallions on demand. 

We added 13 new stallions to the 

studbook of which six are Thoroughbreds 

– the highest number of Thoroughbreds 

forward for several years. The latest 

addition is the good-looking Cape Cross 

son Recharge, one of 10 for his dam, the 

Group One winner Rebelline 

(Robellino-Rainbow Quest). The 

16-year-old, Recharge who 

formerly stood at Shade Oak Stud, is 

now standing at New Hill Farm Worsely 

near Manchester. 

Paul Hallam’s four-year-old Zest for Life 

(WHS Zorro ex Didansa by San Remo) 

is the latest to pass the full grading. 

Other recent grading successes are; 

MC’s Ringo King 2018 (Cornetto King 

ex Sannanvalley by Igguldon Skye 

Laird) and Sea Tzar 2003 (Alice’s 

Diamond Slipper RID ex Seashell II by 

Sea Crest). 

Mare Grading 

We graded 39 mares over the summer 

with 17 (44%) grading into the Head 

Studbook, a good illustration of the high 

quality forward. The accolade of the 

highest marked mare went to 

four-year-old, half-bred Woodclose 

Anisa. The mare, bred by Irish Draught 

enthusiast Sue Benson from Cleckheaton 

in Yorkshire, comes from an exceptional 

line of high scoring SHB(GB) graded 

mares; her grand-dam Woodclose Silver 

Storm was the top graded SHB(GB) 

mare in 2012 and her Irish Draught dam 

Woodclose Rhianna (Grove 

Warrior-Gort Boy) the runner up in 2017. 

Anisa, by the Thoroughbred Andes, was 

champion foal and reserve supreme 

in-hand hunter on her only outing at the 

2017Great Yorkshire Show. 

The second highest scoring mare was the 

Thoroughbred Double Spirit 

(Double Trigger ex Miss Soprano by 

Opera Ghost) owned by Mrs Elizabeth 

Jones of Millbry Hill Stud. 

Fifteen-year-old Spirit is in foal to the 

SHB(GB) graded Irish Draught Stallion 

Castlegar Cool Mist – her second foal 

by the stallion that stands at the stud. 

Foal Grading – sponsored by VT 

Vets 

We graded a total of 34 foals with 20 

of them awarded a premium (a score 

of 8 or more). Ian Darcy’s homebred 

colt foal Westerdale St George came 

out top scoring full marks. He is by the 

eventing stallion Up with the Lark out 

Westerdale Queen of Hearts by the 

Thoroughbred Chase the Ace. The high 

scoring runner-up, Millbry Wuthering 

Heights was also by Up with the Lark out 

of the KWPN mare Bronte by Riverman. 

With thanks to our foal grading sponsor 

VT Vets the owner of the leading foal will 

receive a stud voucher to the value of 

£500 and the owner of the runner-up a 

stud voucher for £300.

Results 

Following from the success of our virtual 

events in 2020, the SPSS took a blended 

approach to Gradings and Evaluations 

in 2021. There were full “in-person” 

stallion & mare gradings at a 

number of venues plus the opportunity to 

eGrade mares or present a stallion for a 

prE-grading virtual “eAssessment” (both 

by supplying video footage). Overall, 

we were very pleased with the success 

of this approach and a hybrid approach 

was also used for SPSS passported or 

overstamped youngstock who could be 

evaluated in person at an SPSS event or 

they could be evaluated through the 

British Breeding Futurity (both in-person 

& virtual) where they were also eligible 

for an SPSS Premium, based on their 

Futurity Evaluation score. The scores of 

all eligible youngstock went forward to 

the SPSS End of Year Youngstock Awards 

and the SPSS is delighted to also 

announce those results as well as the 

Mare & Stallion Grading Champions. 

Stallions 

The SPSS team were pleased that all bar 

one of the 2020 eAssessed stallions who 

were presented in-person passed and 

have been accepted as SPSS Graded 

Stallions as were a further two stallions 

which went straight to the in-person 

grading stage. Another stallion was 

accepted at the in-person grading 

but has deferred completion of the 

post-grading process until 2022. In 

addition, two 2 year old stallions were 

presented for eAssessment and both 

were accepted, allowing them to cover 

as SPSS stallions in 2021/2022, before 

being presented at a full SPSS stallion 

grading in 2022. So our congratulations 

to the breeders & owners of... 

2021 Stallion Grading Champion, 

Godrics Dionysus (SPSS Elite Danger 

36 x Donnerwetter). This 5 year old 

Deutsche Reitpony, British-bred by Bev 

Brown, is owned by Andrew Constable 

(pictured left with his granddaughter 

Daisy Bullman on Dionysus), Pat Pomp 

& Elly Darling. Daisy has had a very 

successful season competing at British 

Dressage on Dionysus and was praised 

by SPSS judge Anna Lowndes for being 

a lovely rider - they were the Preliminary 

Champions at the Keysoe Area

Under 21 class at the Winter Area 

Festival Championship in July. Ten 

days later, they were back at Hartpury 

competing in the 5 Year Old Young Pony 

Final where they were again Reserve 

Champions - a remarkable achievement 

when 12 year old Daisy was the 

youngest rider across all of the 3 Young 

Pony Finals. Since then, Daisy & 

Dionysus have competed at the Summer 

Regional Championships at Preliminary, 

a Summer Area Festival at Novice and 

have won at Elementary level. At the 

grading, Dionysus scored 82.33% and 

was praised for his “excellent workable 

attitude” and for being a “lovely sports 

pony stallion”. 

2021 Stallion Grading Reserve 

Champion, Hearnesbrook New Moon 

(Hearnesbrook Halley x Thunderbolt). 

A 13 year old Connemara, British-bred 

by Mrs RC & Miss V Buxton and owned 

by Jane Holderness-Roddam, New 

Moon is a proven competition pony with 

many successes in Working Hunter Pony 

classes including winning his class and 

then being Reserve Champion at Royal 

Windsor in 2019. He has also 

competed at British Showjumping 

(1.10m) and British Eventing (BE90 & 

BE 100). In 2021, ridden by Gabriella 

Wilton-Baker he was second in his class 

at the Barbury Cotswold Cup, finishing 

on his dressage score. 

At the grading, the judges praised his 

“excellent attitude and nice rideability” 

and said he was a “lovely type with lots 

of ability”, awarding him 81.67%.

Mares 

We are delighted to announce that 

across the 24 mares graded by the SPSS 

in 2021, the Mare Grading Supreme 

Champion was Diane Kilshaw’s 

Weser-Ems passported Sophie 

(Dressman I x Black Boy), who graded 

into the Head Studbook with the judge 

describing her as “the ideal brood mare” 

when giving her the perfect 10 for 

General Impression. 22 year old 

Sophie, who was the oldest mare 

presented by 7 years, was bred in 

Germany by Reinhard Kramer and has 

had a stellar career as a broodmare. 

For her breeder, Sophie had 15 foals 

including a Bundeschampion, a 

Vice-Bundeschampion & 3 licensed 

stallions as well as many successful 

competition ponies and her legacy in 

Germany continues through her sons 

and daughters, who have also produced 

licenced stallions and good competition 

ponies, including Golden Touch who has 

represented Germany at international 

Pony Dressage.

Since Diane brought Sophie to the UK, 

her first foal was the 2019 Elite Foal Tour 

Pony Champion and her most recent, 

the SPSS 2021 Youngstock Supreme 

Champion. In recognition of Sophie’s 

outstanding contribution to sports pony 

breeding, the SPSS Governing 

Committee unanimously decided to 

recognise this by awarding Sophie the 

ultimate SPSS breeding accolade - Elite 

Graded status. 

Then, from the oldest mare to the 

youngest (by just 5 days), the next 

highest scoring mare and 2021 Reserve 

Supreme Champion mare was 3 year 

old SPSS passported Delaroche Royal 

Gold (Hilkens Gold Card x Prins Alfred) 

who scored 82.92% and also went into 

the SPSS Head Studbook. British-bred 

by Lucy Sheldrake and owned by John & 

Dawn Rose, the judges said that she was 

a “lovely type” and “agile and athletic”. 

Royal Gold was only shown once, as 

a yearling, but she won her class then 

was Reserve Champion, beating the 2 & 

3 year olds. Now backed, her owners 

hope that she will be just as successful 

under saddle. 

The SPSS is very pleased that another of 

the mares presented for grading in 2021 

received the sought after SPSS Elite 

status, and that was Sarah Rook’s 

Bannview Black Bess. All that is known 

about Bess’s breeding is that she came 

from Ireland, but missing or incomplete 

pedigree has never stopped the SPSS 

grading mares and acknowledging 

their achievements – and Bess’s are 

impressive! Born in 2010, Bess was also 

awarded SPSS Elite Graded status in 

recognition of her having represented 

GB at FEI Eventing - in particular, ridden 

by Mollie Harris, they completed the 

Great Witchingham International CCI-S 

2* and the CCI-L J2*at the Frickley Park 

National Under 18 Championships in 

2019. Once Bess’s 2021 foal (by 

another SPSS Elite Graded Eventing 

Pony, Prometheus) is weaned, Sarah is 

hoping that Bess will go back under 

saddle and resume her Eventing career. 

Youngstock 

We are delighted to announce that the 

2021 SPSS Supreme Youngstock 

Champion title goes to the pony foal 

Henza She’s On Fire. Bred by her 

owner, Diane Kilshaw, She’s On Fire is 

by FS Numero Uno and out of Diane’s 

2021 SPSS Mare Grading Supreme 

Champion and Elite Head Studbook 

mare Sophie. She’s On Fire was 

evaluated at the Catherston Futurity 

event where she received perfect 10s for 

both her walk and canter, gaining 9.2 

overall and a Futurity Elite Premium.

and is Sally’s first foal out of her SPSS

Tee I, who is by a Morgan stallion out of 

an Arab cross British Riding Pony mare. 

Overall, 20 SPSS GOLD Premiums were 

awarded and 19 Premiums and the SPSS 

was thrilled with the quality of 

youngstock presented either directly or 

through the Futurity and we look forward 

to seeing these youngsters shine as 

sports ponies in the future.

Why worry 

about worming 

young stock? 

It is common practice for equine 

premises to have worming protocols in 

place but this often focussed on the adult 

population. Do we need to worry about 

the young stock too? Should the same 

protocols exist for them? The fact that 

foals are born with no natural immunity 

against worms and that we are seeing 

ever increasing resistance to commonly 

used wormers mean foals and young 

stock are most at risk of serious and 

potentially fatal disease from worms. 

This article runs through some clinical 

cases highlighting the importance of 

farm/ yard management and the 

appropriate use and timing of wormers 

in these most at risk individuals.

A four month old foal presented with ill 

thrift, a poor coat, nasal discharge and 

an elevated breathing rate. The foal had 

not been wormed. Ultrasound of the 

chest revealed changes consistent with 

pneumonia and infectious changes were 

present on bloods, with a high white 

blood cell count. Ascarids can cause 

respiratory signs as well as 

gastrointestinal signs due to the 

extraordinary route around the body the 

larval stages take (migrating from the 

intestine to the liver, into the circulation, 

into the lungs before being swallowed 

and ending back in the gut to mature 

further). Minimal response to antibiotics 

was seen in this foal, as is common with 

respiratory signs associated with 

ascarids (Clayton and Duncan 1978). 

The foal received a wormer and the 

following morning was found showing 

severe colic signs that did not improve 

with pain relief. Abdominal ultrasound 

revealed multiple loops of distended, 

amotile small intestine. The foal was 

referred for emergency colic surgery. 

A huge ascarid impaction blocking the 

small intestine was diagnosed. 

Fortunately, this foal made a full 

recovery.

The risk of acarid infection is greater on 

premises that are breeding foals 

regularly, as youngsters continually 

burden the land. However, the size of the 

burden is hard to quantify as there is no 

correlation between worm numbers and 

egg counts (Nielsen et al. 2010) 

Ascarid infections can be fatal if they 

become impacted in the small 

intestinal. This is most common in foals 

aged 4-8 months (Tatz et al 2012). To 

avoid this aim to treat from 2 months of 

age (treating prior to this is less 

effective and encourages development 

of resistance). Resistance to ivermectin 

and moxidectin is seen widely in ascarid 

populations. Treating with five days of 

Fenbendazole (Panacur ®) can help 

target the younger/ larval stages and 

has a slower onset of activity so can be 

useful if heavy burdens are suspected. 

Treating with pyrantel is also beneficial. 

Once horses reach maturity and their 

innate immunity develops targeted 

treatment for ascarids becomes less 

necessary. 

Tapeworm and 

intussusceptions 

An eight-month-old weanling presented 

with ill thrift and intermittent low-grade 

colic signs of a few days’ duration, 

which had worsened over time. The 

weanling was from a long-established 

stud farm that foals a large number of 

mares each season. The weanling was 

yet to be wormed for tapeworm. 

Ultrasound revealed significantly 

oedematous large intestinal wall and a 

suspected intussusception. This weanling 

underwent surgery, a diagnosis of an 

intussusception was made and 

tapeworm were identified at the 

junction between the ileum and the 

caecum. Thankfully, despite the gut 

initially appearing severely 

compromised, once the intussusception 

was resolved and the blood supply 

returned, no gut had to be removed 

and the yearling made a good and full 

recovery.

Several studies have found an 

association between the presence of 

tapeworms and colic (Nielsen 2016b), 

particularly in horses under three years 

of age (Sembrat 1975). Large numbers 

of the developing stages of these worms 

attach to part of the gut wall, particularly 

the ileum, caecum and the ileo-caecal 

junction. Colic can be associated with a 

physical obstruction of the lumen or due 

to damage of the gut lining (mucosa) 

and can be associated with 

intussusceptions

An intussusception is when one part of 

the gut slides into an adjacent part. Both 

impactions and intussusceptions require 

surgical treatment as above. Smaller 

tapeworm burdens can cause more mild 

signs and should be considered in cases 

of recurrent colic. 

Tapeworm incidence varies 

significantly with geography. The 

sensitivity of diagnosing tapeworm in 

faeces using the standard method is 

low, at 10% (Nielsen 2016b). However, 

saliva or blood tests taken from multiple 

adults in the population (>20%) can 

help identify the level of exposure on the 

premises. If this result is high foals should 

be treated from 6 months and then 

treated twice yearly, but if low this can 

be delayed and reduced to once yearly. 

In cases of recurrent colic or following 

surgery where tapeworm are identified 

treatment should be administered when 

the horse has recovered. 

A resistance problem. 

A yearling presented from a farm that 

had bred a few foals each year for 5-10 

years. The yearling presented with 

consistent ill thrift and loose droppings, 

it had been wormed previously but 

predominantly with ivermectin. Bloods 

revealed elevations of a chronic 

infectious/ inflammatory marker 

(fibrinogen) but were otherwise normal. 

A faecal egg count (FEC) was 300 eggs 

per gram (EPG). Ascarids had been 

noted in the droppings. 

A faecal egg count reduction test * 

(FECRT) was performed post treatment 

with ivermectin revealing a minimal 

reduction in the count (250 EPG) post 

worming thus confirming ivermectin 

resistance. The yearling was treated with 

a double dose of pyrantel (to also cover 

tapeworm) and wormers have been 

rotated since, to good effect. 

Resistance to wormers has reached an 

alarming point, with ivermectin resistance 

to ascarids being reported worldwide, to 

the point that it so should be 

expected until proven otherwise 

(Peregrine et al. 2014). Given ascarids 

are the most dangerous parasite for foals 

this is even more worrying. 

Worming with fenbendazole or pyrantel 

is favourable where ivermectin resistance 

is known or suspected. 

Resistance to cyathastomes has also 

been demonstrated (Reinemeyer et al., 

2015; Bellaw et al., 2018). Given the 

widespread occurrence of resistance to 

fenbendazole in cyathostomes across 

the world, moxidectin is generally the 

treatment of choice, although patterns of 

resistance to moxidectin are now 

being seen. Performing FECRTs yearly, or 

when resistance is suspected, to evaluate 

the efficacy of wormers against 

strongyles and ascarids, is advised. 

Points of consideration: 

FECs are not as useful in foals/ youngsters as they are with 

adults. The focus now is to leave a small untargeted 

population of worms (the refugia) on the pasture rather than 

try and eradicate all, this helps young stock develop immunity 

safely and reduces development of resistance. 

FECRTs should be used annually or when resistance is 

suspected.Rotation of wormers helps reduce development of 

resistance. Do not under-dose horses and foals; use weight 

tapes or scales to determine body weights. 

Recently weaned foals should be turned out onto the “cleanest” 

pastures with the lowest burdens. 

In general target ascarids from 2-5 months of age and then 

strongyle and tapeworm from weaning and thereon. 

Yearlings and two-year olds should continue to be treated as 

“high” shedders and receive about three-four yearly treatments. 

Moxidectin (Equest ®) is safe in foals greater than four months, 

moxidectin and praziquantel (Equest Pramox ®) is only safe 

in foals greater than six months old. All wormers are safe in 

pregnant and lactating mares. 

*A faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) is a commonly used method for 

monitoring drug resistance and involves performing a faecal egg count prior to 

treatment and two weeks post treatment then calculating the relative change in 

counts.

EVA: Equine Viral Arteritis 

What is Equine Viral Arteritis? 

Equine viral arteritis (EVA) is a virus that 

is found in horse populations in many 

countries. While EVA is not usually 

life-threatening to otherwise healthy 

adult horses, it can cause abortion in 

pregnant mares and establish a 

long-term carrier state in breeding 

stallions. Rarely, it can cause death in 

young foals1. 

EVA is notifiable in the UK meaning if it 

is suspected in any stallion, or in a mare 

within 14 days of mating, you must stop 

all breeding activities immediately, notify 

DEFRA and continue to seek veterinary 

advice. EVA was last reported in the UK 

in 2019 involving non-Thoroughbred 

horses imported from other EU countries 

where the virus is endemic. One 

outbreak involved the subsequent 

respiratory spread of infection 

associated with attendance at equine 

competition events in the UK2. 

What are the symptoms 

of EVA? 

The symptoms and severity of EVA can 

vary widely. Infection may be obvious or 

there may be signs at all2. 

Clinical signs include flu-like respiratory 

disease, fever, anorexia, depression, 

swelling of the lower legs, conjunctivitis, 

swelling around the eye socket, nasal 

discharge, skin rash and swelling of the 

scrotum and mammary glands2. 

In breeding mares, abortion may occur 

or those infected late in gestation may 

give birth to foals with potentially fatal 

breathing problems2. 

How is EVA transmitted? 

The equine arteritis virus causing EVA 

is most frequently spread through close 

contact with infected horses who transmit 

the virus through respiratory secretions, 

or via the semen of infected stallions, 

directly during mating or indirectly via 

artificial insemination (AI). Aborted 

foetuses also have the potential to 

spread the virus.3. 

Once initial infection has occurred most 

animals excrete the virus in bodily 

secretions, including semen, nasal and 

ocular discharges, urine and faeces for 

up to three weeks. The virus is then 

cleared by the immune system but the 

accessory sex glands in stallions remain 

infected, which means the male of the 

species is an important source of the 

virus. Once infected, some stallions can 

become carriers, shedding the virus 

for anything from several weeks to a 

lifetime3. 

Infection in mares, whether caused by 

the respiratory route or via semen, is 

usually short lived. Mares do not 

become carriers of EVA and the disease 

usually doesn’t result in long term health 

implications. However, if the mare is 

pregnant when contracting EVA, it can 

result in abortion or a weak foal. 

How can I prevent EVA? 

It is important to ensure that any 

stallions being used for breeding 

purposes, either directly or via AI, 

comply with the Horserace Betting Levy 

Board Code of Practice on EVA. If you 

are a mare owner, you should ask to see 

papers certifying that the stallion is clear 

and has been vaccinated, before it is 

allowed to breed with your mare2.

Vaccination 

The HBLB codes of practice recommend 

the routine vaccination of stallions 

(including teasers) and colts to stop 

the spread of EVA in breeding horse 

populations and so prevent outbreaks 

of virus-related abortions and/or loss of 

young foals. The aim is to minimise the 

risk of the establishment of the carrier 

state in stallions, reducing the reservoir of 

potential infection2. 

The routine vaccination of mares, 

however, is not necessary unless a 

widespread outbreak occurs. Your vet 

will be able to provide you with further 

advice relating to vaccination against 

EVA2. 

Sero-surveillance, of stallions 

vaccinated, to provide estimates of 

antibody levels against EVA, showed 

that to achieve and maintain levels of 

immunity required to protect against 

developing semen shedding, stallions 

require several boosters in addition to 

the primary course3. 

What do vaccinations do? 

Prevention is key to the control of any 

equine disease. The intention is to reduce 

the level of challenge whilst 

maximising the horse’s immunity. 

Vaccination is one of the most important 

ways to help achieve this. Vaccinations 

against contagious diseases such as EVA 

have two main functions: the first is to 

provide protective immunity and the 

second is to reduce the spread of 

disease4. 

Simplistically a vaccine imitates a 

specific disease in order to stimulate the 

acquired immune response more quickly 

and with greater magnitude than in an 

unvaccinated horse. The immune system 

then communicates with the other body 

systems to regulate and destroy this 

foreign material or ‘pathogen’. 

Vaccination helps to provide 

protective immunity, priming the horse’s 

own immune system to allow it to mount 

an improved immune response more 

quickly and with a greater magnitude 

when challenged in the future4. 

To work successfully an effective vaccine 

must be used and the horse must have a 

healthy immune system.

Feature - OPU | Tomlinson Vets 

OPU - Giving Options To Breeders

It can be very overwhelming when 

deciding the right Artificial Breeding 

method to suit your mare, however one 

technique breaking ground in the UK 

provides more options than most. Ovum 

Pick Up (or OPU as its often referred 

to as) is providing solutions for many 

breeders with mares and circumstances 

that are not suited to more common 

artificial breeding techniques. Ovum Pick 

up is a procedure whereby Oocytes are 

extracted directly from mare’s ovaries by 

aspirating the follicles with a specialist 

needle and pump. The Oocytes are then 

sent to specialist labs in Europe where 

they are inseminated directly with a 

single sperm taken from a fraction of a 

straw of Frozen Semen, this is called ICSI 

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection. The 

embryo can be frozen and transferred at 

a later date or transferred directly into a 

recipient. 

The donor mare is scanned prior to an 

OPU session to ensure she has at least 

15 follicles across both ovaries. These 

follicles need to also be within 10-20mm 

in size to ensure the best results from 

the session. The procedure involves a 

trans-vaginal scanning method to access 

the ovaries and aspirate each viable 

follicle to recover an oocyte. The oocyte 

recovery rate per follicle is around 

50-60% and usually requires 6-8 

oocytes to successfully produce an 

embryo using ICSI. This means that you 

will not necessarily get an embryo from 

each OPU session, it is important to 

factor in around 2 OPU sessions 

(repeatable at 3-week intervals) 

for each embryo you want to achieve. 

In order to send the extracted oocytes 

over to Italy the donor mare currently 

needs 3 different tests taken, all sent to 

Animal Plant and Health Agency Labs. 

These tests are: EIA, EVA, and two CEM 

tests taken a least 7 days apart. Around 

3 weeks should be allowed in order to 

get all test results back from the lab, so 

planning ahead is key if OPU is being 

considered. 

When explained like this, Ovum Pick Up 

can seem overwhelming and technical. 

However, it is a great solution for 

breeders who are struggling with 

roadblocks in their breeding plans. For 

example, OPU is ideal for breeders with 

mares with fertility issues who produce 

embryos that are not viable for Embryo 

Transfer, or those who cannot carry a 

pregnancy at all. One of the 

biggest positives of OPU is that it is being 

frequently used with breeders who want 

to use Stallions with either limited frozen 

available, or sub-fertile semen. As only 

a fraction of frozen semen needs to be 

used, the fertility of a Stallion is much less 

relied upon to achieve a pregnancy. 

A straw of frozen semen can be used for 

6-10 ICSI sessions so Stallion owners 

with Stallions who have passed away 

can use less of their semen in storage 

when trying to achieve a pregnancy. 

OPU can also be used in end-of life 

situations through post-mortem oocytes 

retrieval. This is where the oocytes are 

extracted after the mare has 

unfortunately passed away. Four years 

ago, one of our clients’ top polo mares 

tragically died on the operating table. It 

had always been her plan to do several 

cycles of Embryo Transfer with her to 

carry on her fantastic bloodlines, 

however this was clearly no longer an 

option. The decision was made straight 

away to try and harvest her Oocytes 

and send them to Italy to carry out ICSI. 

Our head vet performed this 

procedure in the middle of the night and 

Oocytes were recovered. The Oocytes 

were each injected and an embryo was 

produced. We now get updates on the 

gorgeous Bay foal produced via OPU 

and ICSI, he is now broken and ready to 

start a successful career, just like his dam. 

Without such procedures as OPU and 

ICSI, this would not have been 

possible, and these bloodlines would 

have tragically ended with our client’s 

mare. 

Should the worst happen to top 

competing mares, OPU and ICSI can 

provide a brilliant solution to breeding 

their offspring. 


Feature - OPU | Tomlinson Vets 

Another of our clients was given a tough 

ultimatum a few weeks ago, her mare 

had been having specialist orthopaedic 

farriery involving fibre glass casts to help 

her with ongoing issues resulting from an 

acute pedal bone fracture. Tragically the 

procedure was not providing the results 

needed and she would have to be put to 

sleep with a few weeks. With very little 

time left, it was decided to try OPU/ICSI 

as a last attempt to breed from her mare. 

She had already bred a gorgeous colt 

with us through Embryo Transfer from her 

mare and chosen Stallion who has not 

long been backed and coming along 

brilliantly. With OPU as the only option 

at this time of the year, it was a 

no-brainer. Because of this, our client 

now has three frozen embryos ready 

to be returned to us and implanted in 

our recipient mares, giving her another 

option to carry on the legacy of her 

beloved mare. 

As Ovum Pick Up can be done outside 

of the breeding season, it allows clients 

to have the option to breed in end-of-life 

situations. It also provides clients with 

top level competing mare’s a solution to 

breeding as it does not have to interrupt 

their busy competition schedules that 

typically coincide with the breeding 

season. This client was also using a 

Stallion with poor fertility and the little 

semen in storage would have been 

unlikely to produce pregnancies through 

Embryo Transfer. 

Ovum Pick Up can offer many options 

for breeders who would otherwise be 

very limited for choice. If your mare has 

fertility issues, or should a worst-case 

circumstance arise, OPU can be used 

as a breeding option to carry on their 

all-important bloodlines.

Maverick Eating Grass 

Foals are born free of parasites but will 

be exposed to them within the first few 

days of life. Their immature immune 

systems make them very vulnerable to 

infection, which can have lasting and 

very damaging effects. To help protect 

them we recommend worming foals 

proactively from four weeks old, every 

six to eight weeks until they are 6 months 

old. With wormer resistance increasing 

it’s also advisable to put some worm egg 

counts into your programme at around 

three and five months old to ensure this 

treatment is being effective. 

Usually it’s threadworm and then ascarid 

that new foals are most at risk from but 

for this handsome chap, a Quarter Horse 

foal called Maverick, it was redworm 

that made a very early appearance. 

He had a first worm egg count at exactly 

four weeks old and we were surprised 

to find a low count for redworm (50 

e.p.g. Strongyle eggs). This means that 

he had already ingested redworm larvae 

from his environment and these had then 

developed within his gut to become 

egg-laying adults! 

The small redworm species are some of 

the fastest developing parasites that 

affect horses. It’s one of the reasons 

they’re so numerous and dangerous and 

why we have to test or treat so regularly. 

They have been estimated to have a 

lifecycle of between five to six weeks so 

it was a real shock to see the eggs 

making an appearance after just four 

weeks. Perhaps the lifecycle of some 

species of small redworm is even faster 

than first thought. 

Maverick’s result is testimony to just how 

easily horses can become infected and 

how rapidly this parasite can begin to 

colonise in their gut. This tenacity is what 

makes small redworm such a threat to 

horse health and why a redworm 

problem in particular, can so quickly get 

out of hand. 

WHERE DID THE REDWORM 

COME FROM? 

Although very young foals don’t graze 

or eat hard feed they are curious about 

exploring their environment and mimic 


grazing behaviour, mouthing at grass 

and licking and investigating with their 

muzzles. 

At just a few days old Maverick was also 

observed enthusiastically attempting to 

eat his mum's fresh poo. This is a 

common behaviour called 

coprophagia, which is from the Latin for 

"faeces eating." It can take up to a year 

or more for foals to develop a healthy 

gut and so they are sometimes drawn 

to eating other horse’s poo to help them 

pick up micro-organisms to aid digestion.

It’s also thought that as parasite eggs 

and larvae are likely to be ingested as 

part of this process, in the right 

environment this could stimulate the 

foals' immune system and help to build a 

natural defence. This means it’s not about 

eliminating exposure to parasites which 

is impossible, but rather managing a 

burden and stepping in before the level 

where it could cause disease.Maverick’s 

parasite infection could have come from 

both of the behaviours described above. 

WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT? 

Effective worming is a vital part of giving 

young horses a healthy start. We’d 

planned to worm Maverick at four 

anyway and he was given a single dose 

of fenbendazole, a very safe wormer for 

youngsters. We continued to worm him 

every four - six weeks alternating 

between pyrantel and fenbendazole 

until he was six months old. He’s now 

gone on to a schedule of testing every 

eight weeks and being wormed 

accordingly. Regular testing has 

indicated that the wormers have been 

effective but that he has more
