February 2022 IssueThe Impossible TaskWritten by Gayle M. Gruenberg, CPO-CD ® , CVPOIIs there one thing you absolutely, positively cannot do, and you don’tunderstand why?The task could be anything, like makinga bed, doing dishes, paying a bill, or goingfood shopping. It could be assigning ahome for a category of items or puttingsomething back where it belongs afterusing it. It could be a project at workthat you know you have the skills andbandwidth to complete, but you just can’ttake the first step. This may be your impossible task. The term “the impossible task” wascoined in 2018 by M. Molly Backes todescribe the overwhelm, guilt, shame, and complete inability to do somethingnecessary that appears simple andotherwise easy to perform on its surface. The longer the task goes undone, the morethe pressure and desire to do it continueto build, as does the inability to actuallyget it done, and the self-recriminationover not being able to do it.Organizing can be the impossible taskfor many people. They may know whatthey need to do, have the physical abilityto do it, and understand why it needs tobe done, but they just can’t initiate theaction. The underlying cause of this lack ofmotivation can be varied. It is not laziness. It can be a symptom and a side-effect ofsome anti-depressants. It may be oneaspect of anxiety. People with traumaticbrain injury or PTSD can experience thefeeling. The impossible task is how peoplewith depression describe how it feels tonot be able to do something. How can someone manage the feelingof the impossible task? First, let go ofthe guilt. Recognize the challenge as asymptom of an underlying conditionrather than a character flaw. Treat yourselfgently. Break a task down to manageablepieces. Combine the task with somethingvery enjoyable, like listening to musicwhile vacuuming. Delegate the task tosomeone who loves to do it.
