HE last two years have caused immense upheaval for
us all, but it has also brought out the best of our
communities and people.
After a wet and tough winter, Spring is around the corner, and
this is our chance to rediscover our community and everything it
has to offer.
In S8, we have access to fantastic outdoor spaces and parks.
There are some amazing local groups that work hard to revitalise
and renovate these spaces to ensure that they are safe for all to
enjoy.
Over the past few months, I’ve been working closely with the
Friends of Batemoor Park group who are working to provide more
facilities in the area and the group is going from strength to
strength. The brilliant Friends of Woodseats Playground have
helped transform the park for local children.
It’s great that we have some brilliant independent cafés,
restaurants and pubs and - thanks to all the support our
communities give to local businesses - thriving high streets. We’re
not completely through the pandemic yet and lots of local
businesses are still struggling, so please do think about shopping
locally if you can.
Thank you to all the community members and businesses who
really do make the Active8 area a great place to live, work and play.

A61 Bathrooms have completed two new bathrooms for
clients in Millhouses, hitting the mark on both quality and
price.
Dan and Michelle, a professional couple, commissioned owner
Craig and his team to transform their modern detached property’s
family bathroom, along with the master bedroom’s en-suite.
Dan has some experience renovating homes and describes himself
as “commercially-minded”, always considering more than one quote
as well as researching a company’s reputation.
Calling in at the A61 bathrooms outlet in Chesterfield Road, Dan
was struck by how “communicative and receptive” the business was.
He said of Craig: “He wanted to work with us on the project and
set out what they could do as well as offering helpful suggestions. I
felt it was a very personalised approach.
“After measuring up and providing a quote, Craig was open to
discussion and definitely came out better on cost.”
This initial impression set the tone for the working relationship with
A61 Bathrooms as the project progressed.
The large en-suite features square ‘his’ and ‘hers’ washbasins, a
dual-operation walk-in shower where an old bathtub once stood,
large wall tiles complimented by an attractive, easy-to-clean, feature
Reef wall covering. There is also a large, upright heater/radiator and
plenty of storage space.

Twice as nice!
The main bathroom has a new, larger-than-before,
enclosed shower, neat and tidy washbasin with cupboards
below and a large white bathtub. The walls are again a mix
of tiles and marble-effect Reef.
The company handled all aspects of the two jobs and
worked around the family’s commitments in carrying out
the fitting.
Installer Keith did much of the work, and Dan was full of
praise for his approach and skills.
Dan said: “Keith was about finding solutions rather than looking for
problems and is very, very good at what he does, taking pride in his
work. The quality of his workmanship is brilliant.”
Overall, Dan and Michelle are delighted with the “fantastic” end result.
“We got value for money and first-class craftsmanship,” concluded Dan.

New boiler? No problem!
INDEPENDENT plumbing and heating specialists 1st Call Gas have
been extremely busy over the past year.
Not only have they moved premises from Crookes to a spacious
base at Westbrook Court, Sharrowvale Road, but business has
doubled.
As we embark on the coldest period of the year, the team, led by
David Turner and Leon Stones, are out and about making sure
homes are kept cosy and residents comfortable.
A retired gentleman from Woodseats is among recent clients to
have benefitted from the combined 40 years’ experience of staff.
After his old boiler was condemned, the customer contacted 1st
Call who came out to fit a new Ideal boiler.
It was also recommended that a single pipework system in the
property, which dates back to 1922, be replaced to boost the
heating system
The client said: “It was suggested that a dual pipe system would
perhaps improve the situation as it never got warm in the house,
and it does seems to be the case.”
New radiators were also installed with the work completed in
stages.

NYONE making their way along Chesterfield Road, at
Woodseats, can’t fail to notice the stand-out showroom
belonging to H2O Bathroom Solutions.
The clients sharing their feedback in this testimonial felt not only
that the site was impressive, but they had also heard good things
about the company.
The retired couple have lived in their semi-detached property at
Greenhill since 1966 and the previous bathroom had served them
well for over 30 years.
However, it was time for an update and, also, they were keen to
replace their bath with a walk-in shower for ease of use.
Although the clients spoke to a couple of alternative businesses,
they found H2O Bathroom Solutions to

rule the roost in
Graves Park
Have you noticed more and more gulls enjoying life
here in the Active8 magazine area in recent years?
Prof Ian Rotherham explains what is happening
T
HE name ‘seagull’ is today something of a misnomer since our region is about as
far from the sea as you can get in England. Yet increasingly in recent decades,
we have large numbers of a variety of gull species visiting, especially so in winter.
Reservoirs and similar locations have always attracted sometimes vast flocks to safe roosting
sites, generally in the late afternoon. Some of these gatherings can number tens of thousands
of birds and that makes for a genuine spectacle.
These are mostly herring gulls, lesser and greater black-backed gulls, common gulls, and blackheaded
gulls. There are just occasionally the rare ‘Arctic’ gulls, Iceland gull and glaucous gull.
However, it is the black-headed (really just dark brownish on the head and only in summer!) that
I want to discuss. These have changed their behaviour and will be increasingly familiar to
readers.
The change seemed to begin in the early 1980s when we experienced a series of bitterly cold
winters, genuine ‘white-outs’ and I noticed that around Meersbrook, Norton and Meadowhead, in
Sheffield, and in Dronfield, the gulls were dropping down to ‘loaf’ on short-mown grass areas and

also to land on TV aerials and rooftops. It was the first time I had
witnessed this and the practice seems to have grown ever
since.
Nowadays, this behaviour has increased to the point that it is
commonplace. Birds gather on short-mown grass areas and
then, in late afternoon, they rise, often as one big flock and then
head off to a big water-body some distance away.
Readers of this magazine will then see flocks of these gulls
passing overhead; sometimes in daylight but into the early
evening too. Having stayed overnight, the birds leave at
daybreak to seek good foraging places through the morning
and into early afternoon when the whole process begins again.
With all this in mind I was watching for gatherings at local sites
such as parks and laying fields. My nearest place is Graves Park
and on a cold, foggy afternoon I was excited to find more than
300 black-headed gulls en-masse and down on the grassland
areas near the café.
I generally expect to see only maybe 20 to 30 birds here in the
park and down on the ponds. However, I think the fog had
‘stopped’ them since navigation without vision is as big a
problem for them as it is for us, and the gulls were busily
walking around ‘chatting’ to their neighbours but not flying
anywhere.
It seems that the usual flock of 20 to 30 birds is actually made
up of transient individuals moving through but the weather had
kept them down and so their numbers had risen. Birds seemed
to be coming in but not then leaving, and instead of flying off
when disturbed by people or dogs for instance, were intent on
just running away. The following day, with weather conditions
more or less back to normal, the gull numbers were down to
their usual levels.

Wills
A Will outlines what you would like to happen after your
death and how you wish your estate to be divided.
There are several types of Will and it is important that you
choose the right one for your family circumstances. We will
always advise on this and discuss the most tax efficient Will so
that your Inheritance Tax position is the best it can be.
Without a Will, you die ‘Intestate’, which means that the
complex Intestacy Rules determine how and to whom your
estate is distributed.
It is worth noting that stepchildren and cohabiting partners
are not considered in the rules, so without a Will, they will not
benefit.
Lasting Power of Attorney
A Lasting Power of Attorney, or LPA, specifies the
person (or people) that you trust to make decisions on
your behalf, in the event that you become incapable of
doing so.
These are only valid during your lifetime and your Will takes
over upon death.
There are two types of LPAs: A property and finances LPA
allows your attorney to manage bank payments and to action
the sale of any property, whereas the health and welfare LPA
allows them to make decisions regarding your health, such as
whether an operation should take place and what care you
may require.
An LPA is only valid when it is registered with the Office of
the Public Guardian which can take several weeks, so we
advise doing this straight away. Deciding who to make your
attorney is an important decision and we will discuss this with
you. Some feel more comfortable appointing a Professional
Attorney to remove the burden from family.
An LPA cannot be written if capacity has already been lost
and we would request a capacity assessment from a doctor if
we were uncertain. If capacity has been lost then the only
option is to apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship
Order, which can take several months and here the Court has
the final say on whom the Deputy will be.
Deputyship Order
Being a Deputy can be a big responsibility, as you will
need to pay annual fees to the Office of the Public
Guardian, and prepare and submit annual accounts
regarding the finances of the person subject to the
order.
They may also audit the accounts to check for abuse of
power and for some this is reason enough to appoint a
Professional Deputy to help remove this burden.

Windows are getting wider, larger and harder to reach. Remote control blinds

Rotary Club of Sheffield Vulcan members enjoy a break for refreshments during a recent mission to tidy Beauchief Gardens
Rotarians dig in at Beauchief Gardens
Missions both close to home and overseas have
been occupying local Rotarians in recent months
D
ESPITE Covid limitations, the local Rotary Club of
Sheffield Vulcan has continued to thrive.
Members have been busy supporting food banks by providing
volunteer drivers to reach the housebound, distributing food
supplies, and also facilitating cash grants of £9,000.
The group’s local community work is varied. Last year, for
example, they acted as stewards at Whirlow Hall Farm for their
Superhero Fun Day, and at Meadowhall for a Musical Drive-in in
aid of the Roundabout charity (helping homeless teenagers).
Further stewarding manpower was given to the Sheffield 10K Run
for All.
Sheffield Vulcan Rotarians annually financially support a
pantomime visit for a local school, and have collected usable
clothes for asylum seekers in need. They regularly hold bucket
collections in support of local causes and in 2021 raised over
£15,000 for more than 40 mainly local charities.
Members seek to improve and enrich their environment in
Sheffield and over the past ten years have planted many
thousands of young trees and spring bulbs. As part of that aim,
they have “adopted” Beauchief Gardens, near to the Abbeydale
Industrial Hamlet.
During Autumn, a large number of bushes were trimmed, along
with other general maintenance. Crocus and daffodil bulbs
continue to be planted, so look out this Spring for a wealth of
early colour.
Although this is now the quiet season, members have not
stopped planning for the year ahead. Contractors working on the
Hope Valley railway line improvements have offered to help
improve the Gardens, and jointly with Sheffield City Council (the
Gardens’ owners), members have been planning possible
schemes to improve the structure of the Gardens. Plans include
reducing the height of many of the older trees, reduce the Winter
flooding risk in the low-lying parts, and upgrade the flower beds.
The Gardens are open all year round, and everyone is welcome

enjoy fun events, dine together with informative and inspirational
figures, go walking and many other sociable events.

A third of people say the
best way to celebrate
the Queen’s Platinum
Jubilee will be by sharing
a roast dinner with
someone close to them
HE roast dinner has been
elevated to Royal status as
almost a third of the country
says it will be tucking into the
classic dish to celebrate the
Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
celebrations.
The popular dish has been crowned the UK’s favourite food for
those looking to celebrate all special occasions this year,
according to national research.
The study, conducted by Foodhub, investigated the UK’s go-to
foods to enjoy when celebrating special occasions.
Almost a third of Brits (32%) crowned the roast dinner as their
meal of choice for a celebration, with pizza following behind as
one fifth (20%) chose the cheesy treat, with a Chinese meal
rounding off the top three, taking 17% of the vote.
But what’s a celebration without friends and family? A whopping
68% of participants prefer eating their favourite meal in the
company of someone else, with girlfriends/wives and
boyfriends/husbands the first choice to share a meal with.
And the country’s favourite meal doesn’t have to be just for a
special occasion. Over a quarter (26%) of Brits enjoy consuming

St Luke’s Community Nurses each travel an average of 13 miles
every two days to reach patients and provide support to families
in homes across Sheffield.
And that’s exactly the distance St Luke’s is now asking friends
and supporters to replicate in Home Run, the charity’s February
virtual fundraising event.
The challenge is simple - just run 13 miles throughout February
and help raise vital funds to help St Luke’s continue caring for
hundreds of people across Sheffield, in their own homes.
Regular runners might go the full distance in one run, others
might spread the distance over a few days with shorter runs or
even walks, making it the ideal event for people of all ages and
all abilities.
However the challenge is completed though, the sponsorship
money raised will make a huge difference to people across
Sheffield who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Sheridan: “Take on our Home Run to have some fun, set yourself
a goal and raise much needed money for our patient care.
“Our care reaches across the city, allowing us to give specialist
palliative and end-of-life care to people in their own homes.
“The difference our community care makes can be anything
from helping with pain relief and stabilising medications to
delivering tailored food parcels and helping patients to build their
strength and feel as well as possible, to help them enjoy
precious time with family and friends.
“All of our care and support is without charge to those who
need it but with Government funding covering just 25% of
running costs, we rely on money from events like the Home Run
to help us raise the remaining £7 million needed each year.”
The aim is that runners will plot their own routes, set their own
schedules and have completed the challenge by the end of
February, 2022.
“So get running!” said Matthew. “ Complete the challenge, get
all your sponsorship money collected, then sit back and wait for
your medal!”

a classic comedy romance about a wedding singer, a waitress and
two weddings where things definitely don’t go as planned.

It is almost 80 years since the dark days
Throw in a fake Tina Turner, Billy Idol, Imelda Marcos, Cyndi
Lauper, Mr T and even a Ronald Reagan lookalike and the stage is
set for a show that captures all the hedonistic fun of the 1980s.
The Woodseats production runs at Sheffield’s Montgomery
Theatre from July 13th-16th and is directed by Ian Walker, with
musical direction by Dominic Ridler and choreography by Lily
Abram and Amber Parry.
“Following the massive disappointment of seeing our 2020
production of Anything Goes being hit by Covid, we are
delighted to be getting back on stage at the Montgomery with this
great new show,” said Woodseats chairman Mary Newey.
“It’s full of fantastic music plus vibrant, energetic dance routines
and it takes us back to a time when hair was big, collars were up
and a wedding singer could be the coolest guy in the room.
“The Wedding Singer’s sparkling score does for the ‘80s what
Hairspray did for the ‘60s and is such a great feel-good production,
which is what we all need at the moment!”

Society’s fresh approach
A
N S8-based community performing arts group is
looking forward to exciting new developments in
2022.
Meersbrook Park Church Operatic Society has been keeping
Sheffield and district people entertained since 1926 with an
annual, fully-staged comic opera from the Gilbert and Sullivan
repertoire.
However, after nearly two years of being unable to perform
due to the pandemic, members have re-grouped and are
making changes to how and where future productions are
staged.
It is hoped the fresh approach will help the society reach a
wider audience.
Future shows will have a lighter, concert-style format and the
performance venue will change from Dronfield Civic Hall to
Meersbrook Park Church Hall, with a shorter run including, for
the first time, a matinee.
Said member, Catherine Boutinaud: “The adaptations will allow
different creative ideas to flourish and for more smaller
performances to take place in future.”
Catherine added that the group is also keen to hear from
potential new members.
“Active8 readers who would like to join a supportive and
inclusive group in the future, for some light-hearted
singing, acting and a bit of dancing, would be especially
welcomed, we don’t require auditions to get into the
chorus.
“In these difficult times, being involved in activities like our
group enjoy, can be a wonderful tonic for the spirits and we’re
hoping to help as many people in our community as possible,”
said Catherine.
The society was formed in 1926 for the young people of
Meersbrook Park Congregational Church.
Shows were originally presented in the 'tin hut' on Chesterfield
Road and then in the schoolroom off Beeton Road before moving
to Norton Parish Hall and later Dronfield.

BAND of lusty buccaneers, a bevy of beautiful
sisters, a troop of timid bobbies on the beat, the
very model of a modern Major General, and a young
pirate apprentice on the eve of his 21st birthday… or
is he?
Dore Gilbert and Sullivan Society celebrate their 50th
anniversary with a vibrant new production of one of the most
popular comic operettas of all time.
The acclaimed Sheffield company was launched back in
1972 and since then The Pirates of Penzance has always been
one of the society’s enduring and frequently revived
productions.
Now they’re setting sail again on a swashbuckling adventure
in search of riotous comedy and magical music that comes to
the Montgomery Theatre in Surrey Street in the city centre
from April 6th-9th.
This colourful new production is directed by Graham Weston,
with musical direction by Martin Yates.

and The Pirates of Penzance was one of our earliest shows so it
seemed the perfect time to revisit what has always been one of

Memory Lane
Our area’s
tramcar
heyday
U
NTIL 8th October, 1960, a network of tramlines served the whole of
Sheffield. In the Active8 area, tramcars ran from the city through Heeley
and Meersbrook to Woodseats and then on to Meadowhead. A loop of the track
also operated down Abbey Lane to Millhouses, before returning to the city.
These splendid photographs were taken by Eddy Saxby and have been shared here by his
son, Mark. Pictured above, tramcar 513 makes its way up Meadowhead. When the Sheffield
tramways network closed, this vehicle ran specially decorated in the final procession. Saved
from the scrapyard, it has since been housed at Blackpool, Beamish and more recently the
East Anglia Transport Museum, near Lowestoft.
Shown below is tramcar 163 operating opposite Millhouses Park.

A centrepiece out of nothing!
A BLANK wall in a Chesterfield family home has
been transformed into a stunning centrepiece
thanks to the skills of the team at Supafit.
While Supafit is best known for its work creating
bespoke furniture for bedrooms, its expertise
translates beautifully to living as well as resting
spaces.
Kelsey O’Hara and family are renovating their fourbedroom
detached property and knew exactly what
fitted furniture they wanted after opening up their
kitchen and dining area - and where to go to achieve it.
Kelsey said: “I know someone who has had
something similar and we’d also had other personal
recommendations about the work of Supafit. We knew
that they were really good.
“Jenna came out to measure up and essentially I told
her what we wanted and the next day we had the
designs.”
In scheduling, family-run Supafit worked around
other work being carried out as a part of the renovation
and the installer completed everything to the usual
exacting standard within a single day.
The scheme is a contemporary Hornsey style Shaker
in white-grey. It combines plenty of concealed storage
which has proved perfect for kitchen appliances, along
with shelving, with ambient lighting operated by a
discreet button.
Kelsey said: “It looks really lovely at night with the
lighting on and it’s all been fitted so nicely. We just
love it.”
The next stage in the renovation of the house is the
upstairs and Kelsey said she will definitely be
reconnecting with Supafit when it comes to
installing made-to-measure wardrobes.
Meanwhile, Kelsey has already received
messages about the project from people
enquiring about the business responsible for
the impressive work.

iPlayer. It's called 'Couples Therapy', and I am
hooked.
The documentary series follows couples as they seek help from
psychoanalyst Dr Orna Guralnik with their troubled relationships.
It's a real, raw, fly-on-the-wall experience, where you get to watch
normal people go to therapy to talk through their relationships.
A lot of us are nosey, aren't we? But nothing could have prepared
me for how obsessed I've become with this. It's one of the most
incredible pieces of TV I've ever watched in my life.
We enjoy knowing others' business sometimes, so the idea of
uncovering everything about someone you don't even know, is
quite unusual - hence why the show is doing so well.
When you sit down to watch it, do so with your significant other.
You'll spend a lot of time side-eyeing each other, as you see
parallels with your own relationship.
I think the show is like a form of therapy in itself, because as you
watch, you consider your own behaviour.
And something we love as viewers is feeling clever when we
watch something. The fact we can pre-empt what the therapist will
say, before the couple has even noticed their own issue, is exciting.
Although do prepare to be shocked in parts as some of the
couples come out with such outlandish remarks.
Without spoiling, how could you cope with your girlfriend ringing
you 20 times a day? Your boyfriend expecting you to do everything
for him? Or your partner staying out every night and only
contacting you when they feel like it? Well, for some of these
people, that is their reality!
The episodes are in digestible chunks of around 25 minutes
each, so it's easy to watch and, of course, even easier to binge,
so make sure you've cleared your night when you begin viewing!

AN you believe it is 20 years since
Active8 magazine first dropped through
thousands of local letterboxes?
Our publication was launched in 2002 with the
intention of informing local people about happenings
and achievements in the local area. It also offered
businesses a colourful new window in which to promote
their goods and services to everyone living locally.
Produced by family-run Heron Publications, the glossy
magazine was soon taken to the heart of the S8
community and the feedback received from both
readers and advertisers was very positive indeed.
Readers appreciated their local news delivered to
them for free each and every month. Those running
shops, showrooms, pubs and restaurants soon realised
Active8 was the most eye-catching, cost-effective way
to get their messages across to tens of thousands of
potential customers, all living in their target area.
Demand
Directors Mike and Helen Firth decided to launch their
first magazine in S8 because journalist Mike had grown
up at Woodseats and knew this part of the city didn’t
have a quality publication to call its own.
As demand for the magazine grew, distribution of
Active8 was soon increased from an initial 14,000
copies to 15,500 and then other titles were launched by
Heron Publications; Dronfield Eye, Twist, in Chesterfield,
and Wings, covering the Wingerworth and Ashover
area. This past year has seen the launch of another
Derbyshire title, So Bolsover.
The company also produce the popular quarterly
Sheffield nostalgia publication My Kind of Town, copies
of which are read all over the country and overseas.
Heron Publications had its first base in the loft at the
home of directors Mike and Helen, and early offices at
Meadowhead, Woodseats and Greenhill, before moving
to Hutcliffe Wood Road, in Beauchief.
After a decade there, a new chapter began when

OVE is definitely in the air with Valentine’s Day this
month and weddings back on over the coming
Spring and Summer.
So what wedding trends will be emerging over the course of
2022, such a significant year for those anxious to tie the knot?
Sustainability
With climate change at the forefront of the news, many of us
are trying to limit our impact on the planet. The same goes for
couples planning their big day.
There are plenty of ways to take steps towards a more
sustainable wedding. Elements to consider include a location
that means less travel for guests, eco-friendly menus, and
perhaps dried over cut flowers.
Brides might be thinking about renting a designer outfit or
opting for a vintage or second-hand dress with an eye on
rewearing, reselling, donating or recycling after the event.
The trend towards supporting local business is also spilling
over into the arrangement of nuptials.
Influence of the pandemic
With so many months in lockdown over the last couple of years,
some couples are keen to break loose of restrictions, eloping
together to a destination or organising a big party for their
nearest and dearest. Conversely, low-key back garden
weddings will be the preferred choice for others. Making lasting
memories with loved ones is a theme that is timeless but has
received more attention due to Covid.
Personal loves and passions
In recent years weddings have got way more personalised and
creative and this trend shows no sign of abating. Initials, bespoke
vows, handwritten place settings - are all detailed touches that
elevate the sense of occasion without busting the budget.
Earthy palettes
Wedding trend watchers seem to agree that 2022 will see
couples opt for more natural colour schemes. Think dusty rose
pink, berries and precious stones, even earthy browns, rather
than white and pastel. Sage and emerald greens are also likely
to be popular, with budget-friendly greenery coming in to its own
for the floral arrangements.
Romantic affairs
Whether it’s because the 1980s have been back in style or series
like Bridgerton are so popular, romantic weddings in period
venues which borrow their style from the Regency and Victorian
eras are expected to come to the fore this year. Corsets,
feathered-headbands and other grand embellishments will bring
a touch of drama to proceedings.
Weekday weddings
Finally, with rushes on bookings, many couples are opting for
ceremonies outside of the traditional Saturday slot. For some
parties it’s a chance to trim costs, for others, it’s a way of
extending the experience for guests. Those in the industry agree
this will be a lasting shift.

Suzuki’s new Swace in the pack
Carmel Stewart likes the look of a new
hybrid estate car created by Suzuki,
with a little help from Toyota
T
HE new Suzuki Swace is very much my
sort of car. A well put-together, spacious
estate with a push button start and automatic
transmission requiring a little right-foot finesse.
It’s lovely to drive, smooth and easy to handle with a
chunky, solid steering wheel, clear information screens, shiny
piano black trim, plenty of room front and back and a big boot.
It represents a big change in the Suzuki line-up. Not only is it the
Japanese-based company’s very first estate but it is also just the
second car to emerge from a very advantageous agreement.
In 2017, Suzuki entered into a technology tie-up with Toyota so
that they were in position to develop their hybrid and electric car
technology at a faster pace than might otherwise have been the
case. Toyota has more than 23 years’ experience in this field so it
made sense for Suzuki to tap into that. They wanted a strong
hybrid which could run at low speeds on the electric motor alone
– and so the Swace came into being.
In return, Toyota gained access to Suzuki’s highly successful
low-cost production facilities in India and Africa. Meanwhile,
Toyota engineered and Suzuki badged cars are being built in the
UK. The Swace and ACross are rolling off the Toyota production
line in Burnaston, Derby.
The aerodynamically styled self-charging hybrid Swace is largely
based on the Corolla Sport Tourer but with a redesigned front
end and different badging. It comes with just two highly specced
trim levels - SZ-T and SZ5. The SZ-T list includes seven airbags,

wheel, rear

and pre-collision
emergency braking. The SZ5 adds smart door locking, park assist,
front and rear sensors blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert

Both are powered by a 1.8litre petrol engine and a 53kW electric
motor which add up to 122hp of power. The hybrid system
automatically switches between the two for optimum efficiency.
That said, there is an EV button on the dash which allows the
driver to switch to silent electric mode for a short distance – when
leaving very early in the morning, for example. Also selectable are
three self-explanatory driving modes – normal, eco and sport –
with the latter being the fun and freedom set-up of choice.
Fuel consumption has been officially clocked at an average
64.2mpg and emissions at 103g/km. Prices start at £24,499 for the
SZ-T and from £26,299 for the SZ5.
Spacious enough for five, the Swace has 596 litres of luggage
space with all the seats in place. That ups to 1,606 litres with the
rear seat-backs dropped flat.
Suzuki has a sales target of 2,000 units for a full 12 months of
sales. Such is the driving delight of the Swace that dealerships
should have no problem reaching that level of sales.

Batty’s Butchers at Chesterfield
Road donates surplus meat and
pies to local charities which
prepare the food and serve it to
grateful people in need.
Said proprietor Ian Batty: “We
are proud to be part of a local

people have pulled together
during these difficult times.
“We always endeavour to
support good causes and local
charities.”

Battys’ generosity is
Roundabout, a housing charity
which provides shelter, support
and life skills to young people.
Jess Hudson, the charity’s
community fundraiser, said: “Batty’s first got in touch with us as
they were interested in providing meat for our residential projects
over the festive period.
“This support is now ongoing and they regularly provide meat
for our young people.
“It’s really important for us as a charity to be able to provide
quality, home-cooked meals for our young people, many of whom
have experienced food insecurity in the past.
“We’re really grateful to Batty’s for thinking of us, and for their
fantastic ongoing support.”
Meanwhile, Sheffield Street Kitchen is another cause supported
by the Woodseats shop. A delighted Sarah Fairest told Active8:
“They have helped us out by providing us with food to give out
on the streets to our homeless and vulnerable.
“Some of the produce we have
made into cooked meals and others,
such as sausage rolls and pork pie,
has just been handed out.
“This all really helps us so much as
we are self-funded.”
Meanwhile, Batty’s - a part of
Woodseats for 20 years - are also
currently fund-raising to support
nearby Woodseats School.
Proceeds from a collection bucket
above their shop counter are to be
used towards renovation projects.

Batty’s for a Christmas card
competition at the end of 2021.

2022, following two years lost to the Coronavirus
pandemic.

make it happen. The plan is to stage Woodseats Festival over
the weekend of July 9th and 10th.
Festival stalwart Angela Greenwood explained: “We are keen
