The Gaffer
FIRSTLY, MAY I EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO SHOTA
ARVELADZE, HIS STAFF, PLAYERS AND ALL ASSOCIATED WITH
HULL CITY FOOTBALL CLUB.
H
ull arrive here fresh from a
good point away at Sheffield
United and they have picked
up vital points in recent weeks to give
themselves a battling chance of
retaining Championship status.
They possess good individual talent
and an evident collective team spirit
and we know we face another tough
challenge here this afternoon. As
always, we look forward to the game
and wish all of our guests a safe return
journey home.
I am writing these notes the morning
after a very disappointing away
performance and result against Millwall.
As I stated after the Barnsley fixture at
the weekend, we take plaudits when
we do well but similarly have to be
honest and admit when we are below
par. We failed to match the intensity
of our opponents and likewise failed
to impose ourselves on a game that
was finally lost to two goals that should
have been easily avoided.
We lost too many duels and challenges
and never truly threatened the
opposition goal and as such, never
deserved to take anything from the
match. Two bad displays and zero
points leaves us feeling angry and
frustrated and we are very aware that
we need to respond and deliver a level
of performance that we have clearly
shown so many times throughout this
season.
Despite the disappointment of the
results, the plain fact is that the
players’ efforts have taken us into this
promising league position. They have
delivered a number of high-quality
displays and the table certainly does
not lie after 30-plus games have been
played.
They deserve enormous credit for
how they have worked thus far but,
HOOPS
as we all know, we are now entering the
‘business’ end of the season and we
need to ensure that we maintain focus
and concentration in the weeks ahead.
What is very important is that we do not
allow ‘expectation’ to negatively impact
the overall positive feeling around the club.
At the start of the campaign, I was asked
what would represent a good season and
I stated that, having finished last year in
ninth place, two points off seventh, we had
to look at improving our league position
and therefore we should aim for the playoffs.
With the players having performed so
well, and with other clubs dropping points,
suddenly automatic promotion became a
possible ‘target’.
We must not lose sight of clear and
specific goals. Our budget is below midtable
and therefore a play-off spot would
represent an excellent achievement
by the players. If we can indeed secure
that goal, we then challenge ourselves
to finish the job and deliver the type
of performances that such occasions
deserve and demand.
You, our supporters, have played
such a big part so far and the backing
undoubtedly helps each and every player.
We will need the continued backing in the
weeks ahead if we are indeed to have the
type of season we all hope for. As always,
such support is greatly appreciated and
never taken for granted.
Finally, we were all delighted to hear that
Osman Kakay and his partner had a baby
girl safely delivered late last week. Mother
and baby Aneesa are doing well and I am
sure you will join me in sending warmest
wishes to Ossie and his family.
Enjoy the game!
HOOPS
Jeff, many of our readers would
consider signing for QPR on their
birthday the ideal gift – was it an
unexpected move for you?
For me I would also say it was the perfect
gift! It wasn’t really unexpected because I
wanted to go out on loan and play games
and there were a couple of other clubs
interested, but it was about finding the
right club that I thought would suit me,
somewhere I’d want to go. I remember
watching the QPR game against Derby
back in November, texting my agent
and saying ‘QPR look good!’ – so who
knows, maybe I planted a seed in his
mind without even knowing it. Obviously
I needed the club to want me as well, so I
was pleased to learn that they did.
I’d imagine the opportunity of playing
regularly becomes even more important
at this stage of your career…
Obviously I wanted to play games, but
the important thing for me was to come
into a side who are doing well. The
chance to come in and help this group
in any way I can, to achieve their goal of
getting to the Premier League, that was
massive for me. If I can do that it’d be
brilliant and I’d love nothing better. I’ve
only been here a short time, but I’ve been
given a great welcome from the players,
the staff and the fans.
In the games you’ve played so far,
Middlesbrough had more of the ball
and we managed to take a point, on
other occasions we’ve had plenty of
possession but not made it count – how
would you sum it up?
When I came on for my debut in the
cup tie at Peterborough, they had two
chances in the whole game and scored
both of them when we’d been the better
team. Middlesbrough was one I enjoyed
watching from the bench – it was end to
HOOPS
I can’t remember ever having
this situation before - maybe
I should go straight into the
hairdresser’s now
end, with two good teams going at it –
and I enjoyed it just as much after I came
on. Then at Barnsley we had a better first
half than second half, but we lacked that
bit of quality in the final third, or maybe
that desire to score the goal. The longer
a game goes on, the teams that are
scrapping for their lives are going to get
chances. So they’ve been different kinds
of games, but we have to look at this and
find a mix – not mess around with the
ball and try to have 700 passes before
we score.
You and Stefan Johansen have replaced
each other a couple of times – with your
similar hairstyles, is that a deliberate
strategy to confuse the opposition?!
Ah, possibly! But if you look more closely,
Stefan wears a white headband and I
wear a black one. It’s been quite funny
though, I’ve had some of my family and
friends messing about saying they don’t
know which is me and which is Stefan on
the pitch. I can’t remember ever having
this situation before – maybe I should go
straight into the hairdresser’s now!
At your first club, Derby, you were often
part of a team challenging for promotion
– yet teams always hit a sticky patch at
some stage. It seems we have one right
now at QPR, so what message would you
want to get across?
As you said, every team does go through
that and for me the message would be
not to be too worried about it and let it
get you down. It’s about staying together
as a group, trying to stop that run you’re
WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC 15
HOOPS
We need to get going
again and put more points on
the board and this is a great
opportunity
on and getting back to winning ways
as quickly as possible. This is a really
important time of the year and the key
is to stay calm and be sensible when you
play, to get the results you need. The
more experienced lads can play a big part
in that, with the knowledge they have,
but I think it’s good to have a bit of a mix
– the younger ones have that element of
fearlessness and go for it.
Today’s opponents, Hull, have also been
on a lean run recently but would it be
dangerous to assume that makes this an
ideal opportunity to bounce back?
At the back end of the season every
game’s going to be difficult and you’ve
got to approach it in the right manner.
On the one hand we’ll be cautious of Hull
with the run they’re on and we’ve got to
be ready for them – at the same time
we’re at home and we’re in the position
we’re in for a reason. We need to get
going again and put more points on the
board and this is a great opportunity
as long as we go out there, play good
flowing, attacking football, and score as
many goals as possible.
Jimmy Dunne’s a player you’d have seen
coming through when you played at
Burnley – would you expect him to be
knocking on the Republic of Ireland door
fairly soon?
Yes, it’s brilliant to see Jimmy at a club
where he’s playing so regularly. He’s
someone who was always going to be
in with a chance at international level
when he’s playing regularly and playing
I used to watch the
Dublin games and played
myself, although Gaelic sport
was more a hobby really -
it was always going to be
football for me
well. For the manager, it doesn’t matter
what league you’re in or what level you’re
playing at. If you’re doing well and he
thinks you’re a good player, he’ll bring
you in. I think Jimmy’s got every chance
– I’ve talked to him and I know it’d be a big
dream for him to get into the Ireland setup
and win a cap. I’d love to see that.
I believe you were a pretty useful Gaelic
footballer as a youngster so, with quite
a few GAA teams around this part of
London, will you be taking in a game or
two on your days off?
To watch or play?! Possibly, I might get
down to see a game once the weather’s
good. As a kid, I used to watch the Dublin
games and played myself, although
Gaelic sport was more a hobby really – it
was always going to be football for me.
My dad has always refused to join it, and
sometimes I can’t blame him.
But he’s missing out on Andy Watkins’ brilliant
full-time tweets, wholesome content like Chris
Willock picking Seny Dieng up from the airport
after AFCON, and more memes than I could
possibly forward to him on WhatsApp.
The site has also been home to some heartwarming
and emotional stories. Sebastian
Garcia telling the tale of how friends he met on
QPR forums flew him over from Argentina to
attend a game.
Jacob Tingle and his collective of merry
Americans, who inexplicably fell in love with the
club on a class trip and have remained diehard
fans ever since.
The story of Dottie, a wonderful young girl who
was filmed laughing in an Albert Adomah shirt
during her long journey with chemotherapy –
with Charlie Austin’s wife Bianca set to climb
Snowdon in financial aid of her cause.
You look at that, and wonder how anyone could
deny themselves the chance to hop on Twitter,
follow every QPR account they can, and glue
their eyes to the screen.
Then the game against Barnsley happened.
Immediately, people who have been wrong for
the past three seasons about Warburton, wrong
for the past two seasons about Dykes, wrong
for all of this season about what our targets are,
decided now was the time to throw all the toys
out of the pram.
We’d have been delighted at avoiding relegation
last Christmas and we’d have been delighted
at the prospect of play-offs at the start of the
season. It will remain a massive achievement if
we do it.
Of course our recent run of form has meant
we have higher expectations. Of course it’s
annoying to lose to rock-bottom Barnsley. Of
COURSE you’re allowed to be annoyed about it.
Get on Twitter if you want, to rant and swear and
moan and do all the rest – I’ve got no issue with that.
But if your first instinct is to slag off every player
whose name you’ve been singing for the past
few months and the manager who’s responsible
for all these successes, I hope you can gain a bit
of perspective.
Football snatches you up in an emotional
whirlwind like little else. Anger, frustration and
heartbreak are all part of it. But it doesn’t give
OVERVIEW
O P P O S I T I O N O V E R V I E W
Hull’s 11 years under the ownership of the Allam family were far
from uneventful – they incorporated three promotions, as many
relegations, a foray into European competition for the first time
and a controversial attempt at rebranding.
However, the Tigers faithful will be hoping for a little more
stability following the recent takeover of the club by Turkish
media personality Acun Ilicali – with the first task to confirm
Championship status for next season.
Former manager Grant McCann – who led Hull back to the second
tier at the first attempt last season – oversaw impressive back-toback
victories over Blackburn and Bournemouth to put some distance
between themselves and the relegation zone.
However, those wins proved to be McCann’s parting gift to the fans
as he was immediately dismissed and replaced by Shota Arveladze,
a familiar figure to the new owner due to his previous coaching
experience in Turkey.
Hull’s winning streak initially continued as they overcame Swansea in
Arveladze’s first game in charge, but the run of defeats that followed
means they still have work to do to ensure survival.
GOALKEEPER
How did you get scouted?
I looked forward to playing every week with my local team and at the
age of 11 I was lucky enough to be invited to trial at QPR. This is where
my journey really began as I was offered a contract to join the U12s
and six years later I am blessed to still be a part of this great club.
What’s the highlight of your career so far?
It has to be my first FA Youth Cup game against Swansea away. It
was a great experience to show confidence under pressure due to
the significance of this tournament, which resulted in some good
decision-making and some good saves, one being a point-blank
reaction save tipped onto the crossbar.
Who’s your favourite player or inspiration?
Being half Italian, I grew up regularly watching Italian football with my
dad as he pointed out players who dominated the league and one of
those was Gianluigi Buffon. Buffon has had (and is still having) such
a successful career, it speaks for itself. I cannot forget Seny Dieng,
as he has just won the Africa Cup of Nations and played a big part in
it too. Seny is athletic and has all the attributes required to be a top
quality keeper, this why he is also one of my favourite players.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
I see myself pushing to play first-team football at a high level;
constantly learning and gaining experience, and continuously
improving my game by being mature and consistent between the
posts.
Which of your team-mates is most likely to become a coach or
manager one day?
My centre-backs, Kayden (Harrack) and Henry (Hawkins). They both
share great vision and knowledge about the game and their positions.
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
G
ood afternoon everyone and
welcome back to the Kiyan Prince
Foundation Stadium for today’s game
against Hull City.
Hull have experienced a difficult season so far on
the pitch and have seen a change of ownership
and manager in recent weeks. They gained an
excellent point at Sheffield United in midweek
and will provide a tough test as we look to get
back to winning ways after a disappointing
couple of weeks and results. With the nature
of the Championship, if you are below your
best in terms of performance, individually and
collectively as a team, you will come unstuck.
In the last three games, we have taken just the
one point, having lost at Barnsley and Millwall
and drawing at home to Middlesbrough. I felt in
all three games we didn’t perform at the levels
we have previously shown we’re capable of and
therefore paid the price with our points return.
Looking at the three games, Millwall have a good
home record and defensively don’t give too
much away, so I always felt the game there would
be tough and so it proved. It is fair to say they
were the better team on the night and we were
nowhere near our best right across the pitch.
We conceded two poor second-half goals from
our point of view and did not create anything
of any note as an attacking force, making it a
disappointing evening for us all.
Once again, Oakwell proved to be an unhappy
place for us in terms of both the performance
and the result. Barnsley had been on a long run
without winning a game – a run which you just
know is going to end at some time and you just
hope it is not when you play them. Losing 1-0
was a huge disappointment and showed once
again that you should never look at the league
table or your opponents’ current form going
into games and just focus on getting your own
performance right, individually and collectively,
to get the points you need.
Middlesbrough was a hard-fought draw against
a very good team who are in impressive form.
On the night I felt they played well, with the
confidence and energy that being on a good run
can give you. We led twice on the night with a
superb finish from Ilias Chair and a Chris Willock
tap-in following a huge mistake from former
Rangers goalkeeper Joe Lumley. Middlesbrough
have quality throughout their team, pegged us
back and they will have felt a bit disappointed
not to take all three points on the balance of the
game. As I have said before, it is important to
take points from games when you’re not at your
best and that point could prove very important
when the season comes to an end.
So we have had a poor couple of weeks, but it is
important to recognise we are still in a very good
position. I have said before that there will be
difficult periods in the season to navigate, which
every team has gone or will go through. This is
evident if you look at all the top nine teams in
the division.
Fulham had a run of five games without a win
earlier in the season, as did Bournemouth
who were six without a win until they beat us
over Christmas. Blackburn haven’t won in their
last four games after a terrific run of form.
Huddersfield had a spell in November and
December where they won only once in seven
games. Middlesbrough, who are now in very
good form, had a poor start to the season, as did
Nottingham Forest who took just one point from
their opening seven games and now sit in seventh
position in the league. Sheffield United had a poor
start to the season and had a spell when they won
only two in nine games. Then there is West Brom,
who have won only one in the last nine.
I am highlighting this because every team will
have a poor spell during the season – it’s just
crucial how long it lasts and how quickly you can
get out of it. I have said many times that there
will be bumps in the road on your journey. These
bumps in the road can slow you down but they
must not throw you off course. At times when
you hit a bad spell, everyone involved needs
to stay strong and focused, dig deep and pull
through together. We are in a very good position
that everyone has worked hard for and there is
still so much football to be played until the end
of the season and so much to look forward to.
Today we face the next hurdle to overcome, but
it gives us an opportunity to get back to winning
ways. It will not be easy and we will have to earn
everything we get against Hull today – just like
every game in the Championship.
Thanks once again for the tremendous support
you are giving to the team both at home and
away matches. Your support today will be huge
and can play a part in helping the team deliver a
performance and result we all want. Once again,
get behind the team today and be loud and
proud of who we are – We are QPR.
Enjoy the game.
HOOPS
IAN, our run to the FA Cup final was
40 years ago now but it only seems
like yesterday, doesn’t it?
Sort of! Obviously you don’t realise
how the time goes by so quickly, but 40
years is a long time.
In the third round, we were drawn at
home to Middlesbrough, who were in
Division One, so we started as
underdogs. After a 1-1 draw, it was a
midweek trip up to Boro’s old
Ayresome Park stadium and the R’s
won 3-2, with Warren Neill grabbing
the winning goal in extra time. What
do you remember of those games?
We struggled at home to Middlesbrough,
but luckily enough we got the draw.
Everybody thought that was it as it was a
tough replay, however we went up to
Ayresome Park and performed really
well. To win 3-2 was great and it started
our FA Cup run which saw game after
game coming thick and fast.
In the fourth round we were drawn
away to Blackpool and nearly lost
that match, but it finished 0-0. Then
the replay took place at Loftus Road
with Clive Allen scoring four times as
we ran out 5-1 winners…
All I can remember is going up to
Blackpool and it was a very difficult
game, so we were pleased to get the
replay at home and we played really well
that night. To score five goals in an FA
Cup match is some achievement. Clive
was starting to come into excellent
form, he was a prolific goalscorer and
we relied on him a lot to hit the net. In
saying that, it was a team effort as well.
In the fifth round, we beat Grimsby
Town 3-1 at Loftus Road. They were
several places below us in the
Division Two table and it was a
comprehensive victory – did you feel
the momentum and interest in QPR’s
FA Cup run was building all the time?
We played Grimsby and we thought:
‘This is a great chance of getting into
38 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC
HOOPS
the next round’. That’s what we did and
it was another good result – and yes,
the excitement was growing. I can
remember coming in from training on a
Monday back in those days and
someone might shout out: “Oh, we’ve
drawn such and such in the next round
of the Cup.” But you just had to get on
with it, no matter who you were playing.
We had the plastic Omniturf pitch at
Loftus Road during the FA Cup run
and critics used to say that it gave us
a big advantage. Was that
necessarily the case?
I mean, if you’re a footballer you play on
anything, don’t you? OK, the QPR
players trained on the plastic during the
week. But the away teams would come
down and train on our pitch on the Friday
afternoon before a game to get used to
it. People may have said we had an
advantage but we still had to play football
on the Omniturf. It took us a little while,
but we knew how to play on it.
On to Crystal Palace at home in the
quarter-finals, it was a huge needle
game as a number of QPR men like
Terry Venables, Mike Flanagan and
Clive Allen had previously been at
Palace…
We knew it was going to be a very hard
game as Crystal Palace had some
good quality players, so for us to beat
them 1-0 was fantastic. Obviously we
didn’t want to face a replay going back
to their place. But we nicked it late on
with a Clive Allen goal. Everybody
thought it was going to end up as a
draw – even the players I suppose.
Luckily enough, Clive shot home – he
was a goalscorer and you can’t leave
goalscorers to have a chance in the
Straight in!
the atmosphere was electric…
Oh, it was phenomenal. It has always
HOOPS
– I can go back to 1975/76 when
Rangers finished second in the league
behind Liverpool. Our last couple of
home games that year attracted
30,000 crowds and the noise was
incredible. To be inside the ground as
an opposition player must have been a
bit frightening.
In the semi-final against top flight
West Bromwich Albion at Highbury,
all the build-up before the game was
about Albion’s in-form striker Cyrille
Regis. The pundits said he was
unstoppable…
Everybody was talking about Cyrille,
but our centre-back Bob Hazell did a
magnificent marking job on him. Like in
our quarter-final, the balance of play
was touch and go. Fortunately for us,
Clive Allen scored the only goal
towards the end to give us a 1-0
victory and – bingo! – we were in the FA
Cup final. That just wasn’t expected by
the football public. I can’t recall too
much about the winning goal but I think
Clive blocked a clearance and it
bounced back past their keeper. As
long as the ball went into the net, that
was the main thing.
The celebrations at the final whistle
were immense…
We had huge support on the North
Bank terrace – the QPR supporters
were outstanding that day. To be
honest, our fans were always very
good. I speak as I find and they really
helped us get through the semi-final at
Highbury.
On to the final, against Tottenham
Hotspur at Wembley – it was
publicised in advance that this was
going to be your last game in a
Rangers shirt after nearly 500
first-team appearances. How did
that situation come about?
We played an away fixture up north a
few weeks before the final. Our
manager Terry Venables was sitting at
HOOPS
Fortunately for us, Clive
Allen scored the only goal
towards the end to give us a
1-0 victory and bingo! We
were in the FA Cup final.
the front of the team bus as we were
coming home and he said he wanted a
word with me. Terry just said: “Look, we
are going to give you a free transfer at
the end of the season.” So I had to
accept that – it was part and parcel of
football. Even so, it was a big upheaval
for me, having been at QPR for so many
years and then moving on. I started at
Rangers as a schoolboy and signed
apprentice forms in 1967 before
becoming a pro one year later. I was with
the club for a long, long time and saw
many players come and go. It was a
huge part of my life and I still have great
affection for Queens Park Rangers.
Back in those days, the FA Cup final
was the biggest match on the
football spectrum, wasn’t it?
Of course it was. Things are a bit
different nowadays but, back in that
era, the television coverage started at
9am. We got up to have our breakfast
and there were cameras and TV
people everywhere in the hotel. We
had a lot of coverage and that was
good for QPR. We knew what to expect
and all our players addressed
themselves really well.
We forced a 1-1 draw against
Tottenham and then narrowly lost the
replay 1-0 at Wembley. But no-one
gave us a chance beforehand…
Spurs were an excellent team back
then – they had some superb players
so we knew it was going to be a very
difficult match. There was a big
build-up, we stayed in a hotel all week
and we had training facilities. Terry
Venables told us exactly what we were
going to do out on the Wembley pitch.
In the first game, to be honest we
probably would have lost if it wasn’t for
Peter Hucker playing so well in goal for
us – he put in a top performance to
force a replay. I was thinking that the
final was going to be my last game for
QPR but that replay gave me another
bite of the cherry. I was appearing at
Wembley twice and I was very proud. It
was an honour to play in the FA Cup
final for your club side and it was very
emotional for me as I knew I was
leaving Rangers.
The replay took place at Wembley on
the following Thursday evening and
we did everything but score in that
1-0 defeat…
Yes, we really went to town on Spurs,
which was quite surprising. We kept
playing and playing and playing but we
couldn’t put the ball in the net. It was a
sad thing when the final whistle went
but that was the way it had to be.
CRYSTAL PALACE 0
Competition: FA Cup quarter-final
Attendance: 24,653
The Programme: Twenty pages, price 40p
A LAST-GASP strike by Clive Allen sent
Rangers through to the FA Cup semi-finals
for the first time in their history.
This match attracted a raucous crowd of
24,653, plus the cameras of ITV’s Big Match
show with the legendary Brian Moore as
commentator. And the tension was
heightened by the fact that R’s boss Terry
Venables had previously plied his trade at
Selhurst Park, along with Hoops stars Mike
Flanagan and Clive Allen.
Rangers carved out the better of the scoring
opportunities in a highly-charged encounter.
On the hour mark, Allen hit a thunderbolt from
eight yards out but Paul Barron made an
instinctive save in the Palace goal. Then
midway through the second half, Barron had to
scamper across his line to paw away an
opportunist 40-yard volley from Simon
Stainrod which zipped goalwards off the
rock-hard surface.
Palace, under their manager Steve Kember,
were content to play for a draw and rarely
looked like scoring. Their best effort was a Jerry
Murphy free-kick that curled inches wide.
It seemed that the tie was heading for a replay,
but Allen made the decisive breakthrough for
Rangers in the 87th minute at the Loft End.
QPR won a corner on the right-hand side and a
club steward called Mark retrieved the ball. He
placed it in the quadrant and shouted at R’s
midfield maestro Tony Currie to get a move
on with taking the set-play as time was
running out!
Currie didn’t even re-spot the ball. He just
followed the spontaneous instructions and
chipped it into the penalty area.
John Gregory won the aerial battle and
headed down into the goalmouth. Allen had
his back to goal and hit a right footer on the
half-turn. In what seemed like slow motion at
the time, his shot squirmed through a crowd of
players into the bottom right-hand corner.
There then followed one of the most
incredible goal celebrations of all time as
Allen sprinted 100 yards down the pitch
before dancing with delight right in front of
the Crystal Palace fans who had previously
been ferociously taunting him with cries of
“Palace reject”.
Another melodramatic twist was to follow.
With seconds to go in the 90 minutes, referee
HOOPS
John Hunting awarded Crystal Palace a free-kick.
However, hundreds of Rangers fans thought that
this was the end of the game and they ran on to
the pitch to celebrate.
The playing area had to be cleared of supporters,
who then formed a human touchline right on the
edge of three sides of the pitch as the remainder
of the match was played out. One over-keen QPR
fan subsequently attempted to tackle Crystal
Palace winger Neil Smillie as he dribbled down the
flank.
Palace threw all their players forward, but to no
avail and the (genuine) final whistle prompted
tumultuous celebrations.
AN ENGLAND Under-20
international against Italy
was staged at Loftus Road
on Tuesday 31st March 2009.
Before a crowd of 6,297,
England won 2-0. Ciaran
Clark headed the opener on
20 minutes from a corner by
Marc Albrighton.
Then 10 minutes later, good
work by Kieran Gibbs led to
Daniel Sturridge applying a
crisp right-footed finish.
England coach Noel Blake said
afterwards: “We played well
when we were in possession
and out of possession. The
game was won early on.
“Italy started brightly and
pressed us, that was what we
expected.
“My goalkeeper David Button
made a fantastic save and we
were able to take control of the
match after that.”
A match report by Gary
Parkinson of FourFourTwo
read: “England’s Under-20
side continued their
preparations for the FIFA
U20 World Championships
in Egypt this autumn with
a fine 2-0 win over their
Italian counterparts at QPR’s
“Noel Blake’s side were
without Football League
struggle to create chances in
his absence.
“The Italians started strongly,
with Sampdoria’s Marco
Marilungo pouncing to smash
a misguided James Tomkins
header towards goal, only to
see his effort expertly tipped
over by David Button, currently
on loan at Luton Town from
Spurs.
“However England were soon
in front. Chelsea’s Scott
Sinclair, currently on loan at
Birmingham City, produced a
marvellous piece of skill by the
corner flag, beating his man
with a drag back before earning
a corner, which was expertly
floated into the danger zone by
Aston Villa’s Marc Albrighton
and headed past the stranded
Carlo Pinsoglio by Albrighton’s
Villa team-mate Ciaran Clark.
“Sinclair continued to look
lively down the left, wowing the
6,000-plus crowd with a series
of step-overs and darting runs,
while the strike partnership
of Manchester City’s Daniel
Sturridge and Freddie Sears of
West Ham were finding space
to exploit when the ball was
presented to them.
“England were two ahead
on the half-hour when West
Ham’s James Tomkins carried
the ball into the Italian half
before laying the ball to
Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs, whose
blocked shot eventually landed
at the feet of Sturridge to
expertly guide the ball over the
shoulder of the approaching
keeper.
“Italy came out of the traps the
quicker again after the break,
with Matteo Gentili heading
into the ground and over the
bar, while Claudio Della Penna
of Pistoiese chested the ball
down on the edge of the box
before volleying towards goal
and bringing a decent save out
of Manchester United keeper
Ben Amos, who had replaced
Button at the break.
“A series of substitutions
took their toll on the flow of
the match in the final half an
hour and as a result decent
openings were few and far
between.”
TONY INCENZO RECALLS SOME WEIRD AND
WONDERFUL STORIES...
TOYOTA
IN the recent Swansea City programme, I told
you how a train trip to see QPR play away to
Everton in the 1990s caused me considerable
embarrassment.
To recap, my ex-girlfriend was with me and she
didn’t believe that the Scouse accent actually
existed until we arrived at Liverpool Lime Street.
Then she started badgering our cab driver to say
some stereotypical Scouse phrases en route to
Goodison Park.
Anyway, another weird incident occurred when I
took this particular lady – who I will call ‘Tina’ – to
a Rangers match at Stoke City.
I drove this time and took the M1 up from
London. But, with major traffic delays inevitable
on the M6 back in those days, I decided to head
cross-country to Stoke on the A50. Tina had
a road atlas open and started noticing all the
places we were passing.
“Burton upon Trent! That’s a funny name,”
said Tina. “Uttoxeter! That doesn’t sound very
pleasant.”
But as we were driving near the famous car
factory, she got confused. There was a big road
sign which read:
TOYOTA – 1 MILE
And Tina said: “Ooh Toyota! That sounds like a
lovely little village.”
Then she started looking for it on the map! I
couldn’t believe my ears but I decided to play
along with her.
So I said: “Yes, I’ve heard of that village. A lot of
nice Japanese people live there.”
But Tina didn’t realise I was being flippant. She
continued: “Tony, do you know that there is also
a car called a Toyota?”
“Really Tina?”
“Oh yes. I have seen them on the roads.”
We were in fact driving in an MR2 at the time.
Glenn Roeder, the captain who
had led Rangers to promotion
to the top flight, had swapped
the blue and white hoops for
the Toon’s black and white
stripes and recalled the
encounter with a shake of the
head and a wry smile.
After all, it was one of THE
great comebacks, one
which left Newcastle players
‘cowering in the showers’ as
their manager Jack Charlton
came storming down the
corridor, ready to unload a few
verbal volleys.
Chris Waddle hit a hat-trick
for the Toon and also laid on
a goal for Neil McDonald as
the teams headed for their
interval cuppa.
Roeder, who passed away
last year, had scored when
Rangers defeated Newcastle
3-0 in their first ever victory
on the artificial Omniturf,
which had been laid down
at Loftus Road in 1981.
The visitors also lost their
next game on the plastic
surface without scoring,
but it seemed they had
finally got the hang of it this
time, judging by the first 45
minutes.
But Rangers roared back
with goals by Gary Bannister,
Simon Stainrod and John
Gregory before Waddle set
up Kenny Wharton to make
it 5-3.
However, Steve Wicks reduced
the home arrears within a
minute and Gary Micklewhite
secured Rangers a point in
injury time.
It was no surprise that
Danny Baker, the comedian,
presenter and writer,
introduced the game in his
Freaky Football video series
in tongue-in-cheek fashion,
saying: “Now bear in mind in
those days Rangers’ plastic
pitch gave off clouds of
noxious, mind-expanding
fumes, which contributed to
what you are about to see.”
HOOPS
Roeder said: “Chris Waddle
said to me at half-time, ‘You
must be loving this’. I said, ‘Yes
I’m enjoying this’, because,
although I loved QPR and had
a great time there, I wanted to
win with a new shirt and a new
badge.
“At 4-0 all the Geordies –
Newcastle were always well
supported – in the crowd
were happy. But I said to Chris,
‘QPR can be lucky b****rds
and only have to score and
they’ll be racing’. That’s what
happened, of course, but we
should have had enough to
win.
“When we kicked off at 5-5 I
said to the referee, ‘How long
to go now?’ He went, ‘We’ll
kick off and I’ll blow up’. I said,
‘Thank f*** for that’, thinking
‘we’re going to get beaten
6-5 here, even though Chris
Waddle had put on a stunning,
virtuoso performance’.
“I’ve never known any team
to shoot down the tunnel
and into the dressing room
after the game so fast,
quickly get their kit off and
all hide behind each other.
Charlton was coming down
the f****** corridor with his
‘pearl shotguns’. If he’d have
had them he’d have used
them on us. You never saw
such a bunch of cowards, also
hiding behind each other in
the shower with the manager
going absolutely apeshit.
Apparently, the QPR chairman
Jim Gregory, God bless him,
was happy with 5-5 because
he made loads of money from
the running off of thousands
of videos and selling them in
the club shop.”
QPR defender Warren Neill
said to me: “It was bizarre,
fantastic – one of the greatest
comebacks of all time. The
11,000 sounded like 100,000
as we came back.”
R’s boss Alan Mullery said: “We
needed a miracle and we got
it. The sort of game which is
exciting for the fans but gives
managers heart attacks.”
Charlton, meanwhile, said: “It
was a total embarrassment.”
PS: Rangers defeated today’s
opponents Hull City 4-1
during their one-season
return to the now razed White
City Stadium in October 1962.
Brian Bedford (3) and Mark
Lazarus were on target for
the hosts. It was the biggest
home win and attendance (18,
281) of that campaign for the
Super Hoops.
CAMBRIDGE CITY 1
Sue Kumaning’s injury-time strike ensured QPR
FC Women shared the points at the Powerday
Stadium and stretched their unbeaten run to
five games.
Substitute Kumaning fired her 20-yard effort
through a crowd of City players and in off the
post in the third minute of added time to cancel
out Grace Stanley’s opener for the visitors.
Cambridge applied early pressure and it
needed Katie McLean’s terrific tip-over save
from Stanley to keep the scores level.
Skipper Vicky Grieve then cleared off the line,
but the troublesome Stanley eventually broke
the deadlock midway through the first half –
and Rangers were briefly reduced to 10 when
Demi Edwards was ordered to the sinbin with
an orange card.
Steve Quashie’s side stepped up the attack in
the second half and Ellie Searle’s effort was
tipped onto the post at close range.
Kumaning rifled a chance over the bar, while
Brogan Moore also went close, clipping the
woodwork from 25 yards as the ball sailed to
safety.
But Rangers’ persistence eventually paid off
when Kumaning grabbed her late equaliser to
secure a point.
Columnist
THE JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER PENS HIS
LATEST COLUMN…
I
’ve been home for about an hour since
the 2-0 defeat at Millwall, and as
predicted, there has been negativity on social
media after the result.
We were poor on the night, and Mark
Warburton’s post-match comments reflected
that. If this result, on the back of a bad defeat at
Barnsley, represents a blip – then I’d rather have
it in mid-February than at the end of April.
I remember Neil Warnock telling me during our
2010/11 promotion season that a 2-0 midweek
defeat at Millwall had the boardroom panicking
despite the team occupying a healthy lead at the
top of the Championship.
Back then, we recovered immediately with a win
over Crystal Palace – we must do that today
against Hull.
There are 15 games left and, when any fan
evaluates the table and remaining fixtures, you
assume the teams around you will win all their
remaining games.
That, of course, won’t happen. For now, I’d urge us
all to stick together and just see what happens.
I invited my former Sky colleague Dean Spencer
to The Den, where we bumped into Marc
Bircham. He was brought in for a Q&A in one of
the hospitality lounges and he was good value as
always. I’ve told him in no uncertain terms that
he needs to stay away from QPR games for a
while, as he’s proving a very unlucky presence.
I also chatted briefly to our former chairman
Nick Blackburn. Like Marc, he has some excellent
stories from his life in football.
His time at QPR largely pre-dated my period
covering the club, but we said we’d keep in touch.
