efforts, and the economic and permitting
requirements for mine start-up.
The final evening was spent, as is
traditional for these courses, at a group
dinner. As we have noted to students in
each course, it is very likely that they, at
some point in the future, will encounter
their fellow field course participants; so
this dinner was not so much a
“farewell” as a “see you again” fete.
The course leaders are grateful to
exploration veteran Jacob “Jake”
Margolis, Exploration Manager for
Redstar Gold Corporation, for his active
and animated participation in this field
course. Jake acted as the “third professor”
and was very involved with
prompting students to participate in
discussions of the exploration criteria,
economics, and geochemical characteristics
of the ore deposits that make up
this course. Jake, our many thanks to
you for making the course much more
interesting to both students and to the
course leaders!
As in the previous Student-Dedicated
Field Course offerings, our hardhats are
off once again to John Thoms of the
SEG Foundation and Vicky Sternicki of
SEG at the SEG headquarters office in
Littleton, Colorado, for their efforts in
assuring that preparations for this SEG
Foundation field course went off without
a hitch. As field course leaders, we
appreciate their polished and professional
behind-the-scenes work. Finally,
we gratefully acknowledge the continued
support of donors to the SEGF
Student Field Trip Fund—this support
and encouragement is indispensable for
these field courses. In each of these
courses, we have endeavored to keep
students excited about mining geology
and minerals exploration by providing
opportunities to keep them “looking at
the rocks.”
The next SEGF Student-Dedicated
Field Course is being planned for
October 2010, as a part of the SEG
biennial conference in Keystone,
Colorado; details will be announced
when available! 1
Participants gather in front of a type-locality outcrop for the Golconda thrust fault,
Phoenix mine site.
