although I was unprepared for the sudden
snow storm and several inches of
snow on the ground while I visited! This
shocking temperature change continued
in Ottawa, where I met my long-time
friend and colleague from University of
Toronto days, Mark Hannington. There,
it was about –10°C and I was noticeably
underdressed! I gave the SEG talk at
Carleton University, with my host being
Brian Cousens. The talk was again well
attended and there was good discussion
afterwards. Later, I enjoyed a lunch
with Brian and colleagues, Mark, Jim
Franklin, Dan Layton-Matthews, and
good friend Jan Peter, also ex-U of T.
Jan showed me around the facilities at
the Geological Survey of Canada, and
then I spent an enjoyable dinner reminiscing
with him, Mark, Dan and others
at a local restaurant. This was once
again a two-week visit that utilized
about 14 flights. I was getting used to
that!
The final part of my SEG lecture tour
was a short visit to various Australian
institutes in early October 2008. I visited
one institute in a different city every
day over five days, including the Uni -
versity of New South Wales in Sydney,
with host Ian Graham; Geoscience
Australia, Canberra (Andrew Barni -
coat); Monash University, Melbourne
(Reid Keays); University of Tasmania,
Hobart (Jocelyn McPhie), and the
Geological Survey of Western Australia
(Franco Pirajno), although the talk was
given at the Australian Resources Re -
search Centre of the CSIRO (Shannon
Johns). The interest in the subject presented
was tremendous and the hospitality
shown me by my hosts very gen-
erous. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. This
tour was sandwiched by keynote talks
on a similar subject at the AusIMM conference
in Wellington, New Zealand,
and the PACRIM conference in the Gold
Coast, Australia.
In summary, during 2008 I presented
the SEG Distinguished lecture at 12
institutions, over 8 countries and 3 continents
and a lot of flights! When combined
with lectures of a similar nature
presented at 5 conferences that same
year, it meant I was able to share the
latest research on submarine arc volcano
hydrothermal systems done by my
colleagues and myself with a wide audience
over a relatively short period of
time. I had a great deal of fun doing
that, meeting new people, and catching
up with old friends, and I am grateful to
SEG for that opportunity. 1
