Vision Statement
SEG’s challenge in the upcoming years
will be to further expand its geographic
area of influence while it continues
advancing towards higher standards in
the use of the geosciences for the study
and sustainable development of mineral
resources. Incorporating new members
with high professional qualifications
from developing countries,
members with strong desire to actively
support SEG’s objectives, will be a key
factor in future institutional endeavors.
JENS GUTZMER
(SEG 1995 F)
Born in the state of
Lower Saxony in
Germany, Jens Gutzmer
was educated at the
Technical University of
Clausthal-Zellerfeld,
where he received an M.Sc. degree in
mineralogy and economic geology in
1993. He then moved on to South
Africa, where he completed a Ph.D. in
geology at the Rand Afrikaans Uni -
versity in Johannesburg in 1996. He
spent a total of 16 years in South Africa,
where he co-founded, together with Nic
Beukes, the Paleoproterozoic Mineral -
ization Research Group at the Rand
Afrikaans University in 1998. In July
2008, he was appointed as professor of
economic geology and petrology at the
TU Bergakademie Freiberg, Germany;
he also holds a guest professorship at
the University of Johannesburg. Jens is
a previous recipient of the Lindgren
Award of SEG (2002), the President
Award of the National Research
Foundation of South Africa (1999) and
the TWAS Award of the Academy of
Sciences of South Africa (2007). He has
been member and chair of the SEG
Student Committee (2002–2004) and is
one of its active mentors. He was a
member of the editorial board of
Economic Geology from 2002 to 2007.
Vision Statement
Despite the recent financial downturn,
the biggest threat faced by the global
exploration and mining industry
remains the lack of young professionals
entering their career equipped with relevant
knowledge and training. This is
the consequence of a long-lasting trend
of relevant education programs being
shelved and academic positions being
made redundant. The SEG has very successfully
addressed the need of graduate
and postgraduate geoscience students to
get exposure to the field of economic
geology. Building on this success, SEG
should consider the possibility to also
act as a suitable catalyst to re-establish
or re-invigorate economic geology education
programs at selected universities.
This will require a sincere collaborative
effort from industry, government agencies,
and academia, an effort that may
well be facilitated by the SEG. I am
looking forward to assisting SEG in all
of its efforts to assure that future generations
of economic geologists will receive
appropriate education and training.
ALEXANDER
YAKUBCHUK
(SEG 1999 F)
Alexander Yakubchuk
was born in Irkutsk,
Siberia, in the former
Soviet Union. He
received his Russian
equivalent of M.Sc. degree in 1986 from
the geology department, Lomonosov
Moscow State University, and his Ph.D.
degree in 1989, also from the
Lomonosov Moscow State University in
Russia. He then became an assistant
and associate professor at the same university,
teaching structural and regional
geology with a main focus on geological
mapping surveys in Kazakhstan,
adjacent central Asia, and Ukraine. In
1993–1994, he spent 5 months with
Prof. Sengor at the Istanbul Technical
University, participating in the crossregional
tectonic compilation across
central Asia.
In 1994, Alexander made a change
in his career plans and became
involved in mineral exploration with
various major and junior companies
such as BHP, Norilsk Nickel, Rio Tinto,
and Anglo Gold, working in various former
Soviet Union countries,
Mongolia, and
