The Potentate
During the upcoming year we have
several new ideas and variations of old ideas:
Evening in Paris, St. Patrick’s Day Party,
Antioch Olympics, Youth Dance, Murder
Mystery Dinner Theater, Luau, Widows
Night, Fireman’s Awards, and Ladies
Luncheon. Friday Night Bites this year will
also have themes but will remain informal
appetizer type social nights (so far we have
Movie Night, Hockey Night, Baseball Night,
Jimmie Buffet Meets Pirates of the
Caribbean, Greek Toga Party, 50’s Night Ice
Cream Social, Fall Festival, Halloween
Party, Chili Cook-off & End of World Party
planned.
Important updates for membership
during the “Get the Buzz for Membership”
campaign in 2012 …. Any Noble suspended
from membership during 2011 or prior can
reinstate their membership in Antioch for
$50.12 during 2012.
Membership Goals have been established
for Clubs and Units for new Nobles to be
brought into Antioch and are as follows:
(each new Noble will only count once for
a Club or Unit as indicated by the
1st Line Signer):
• All Clubs along with Motor Corps, Brass
Band, Hillbilly Clan, and Funsters have a
goal of 20 New Members in Antioch.
• All other Units have a goal of 10 New
Members in Antioch.
• For anyone who gets three Reinstatements,
they will be invited to the next
Antioch Shrine Private Membership party.
Overall Antioch Shrine Goal, 200 New
Members in the Antioch Shrine, which
means we all make our goal and qualify for
a party! We will have a party night (for a
couple of hours) in the Oasis with light food
a few times during the year and once your
team achieves their goal they will be invited
to GET THE BUZZ at the next Antioch
Shrine Private Membership party.
In addition to the Crier, I also have a
BLOG linked off the website and will be
updating it on a regular basis. It will be
another source of information and a glimpse
into my thoughts along with reports on the
various events happening around Antioch.

ANTIOCH
SENIORS
By Noble Bruce E. Puff, Scribe
The saying, “Just ‘cause there’s snow on
the roof, doesn’t mean the broilers not
working.” With the start of the new year,
the “Senior” Noble turned the heat on, with
great attendance for the past four meetings,
plus had a large showing of “Seniors” at the
Stated Meeting and O.G. Roast, to welcome
our new Divan, then on to the installation
of our own Senior Officers. The “Seniors”
has also had a great support of the first of
the year Friday Night Bites.
Now on into the month of the heart. Our
“Seniors” have started to stoke their flames
with coffee, tea, and donuts, and want to
make a dare, that no other Unit and/or Club
will out do the “Seniors” in Circus workers
and duties. The Funsters may out perform
the Seniors by a clowns red nose. With
a small intake of air, or, another donut,
our Seniors, will not be out done, by heating
up and showing there wives and girlfriends
the best Valentine time ever. Then the
“Seniors” will go on to attend the fights at
Hara Area, and we’ll see if a Hockey Match
will brake out. Come join the hottest group
in Antioch.

CLUB

The Aladdin Shrine Hamfest is Saturday,
August 4, 2012 at the Aladdin Shrine Center
in Columbus. The site is along the I-270
outer belt on the northeast side of Columbus.
The Aladdin Shrine Hamfest will be the
host hamfest for the Ohio ARRL State
Convention. The Aladdin Shrine Center has
excellent facilities for various forums, and the
Wouff Hong Ceremony. This hamfest is
always a good hamfest, and the convention
will give it a tremendous boost. It will be a
good opportunity to meet more Nobles and
brothers. Mark your calendars now!!!

BIG show.”
Are you getting back to Blue Lodge
to recruit trombones? We are in the midst
of Lodge Inspections, which is a great time
to get back to Lodge to recruit. Let’s get
it done!
Saint Valentine (in Latin, Valentinus) is
the name of 14 martyred saints of ancient
Rome. The name “Valentine”, derived from
valens (worthy, strong, powerful). Of the
Saint Valentine whose feast is on February
14, nothing is known except his name and
that he was buried north of Rome on
February 14. The feast of St. Valentine was
first established in 496 by Pope Gelasius I,
who included Valentine among those “...
whose names are justly reverenced among
men, but whose acts are known only to
God.” It seems to be much more than a
romantic day.

Well, Christmas and New Year’s came and
went quickly without snow, which is just fine
with me. The Classic Car Club will have
its installation of officers and first meeting
of the year on Tue., February, 28th at 7:00
p.m. This year’s officers are President Jim
Matthews; Vice Pres. Jim Smart; Secretary
Jackie Butler and Treasurer David Bussard.
Special thanks to Bud Statzer who was last
year’s Treasurer!
We are excited about this upcoming
year and all of the opportunities we will have
to support Antioch and the kids at the
Shriner’s Hospitals. The Circus is a great
opportunity for all the Nobles at Antioch to
participate and join in on all the fun.

Our first dinner meeting of 2012 was held
at the Troy Eagles January 19th. The first
order of business was the installation of new
officers. They are: Bill Lohrer, President;
Gene (Roy) Group, First Vice President; Joe
Joity, Second Vice President and Bruce
Adamson, Secretary-Treasurer.
We meet the third Thursday of every
month. Our February 16th meeting will be
held at the Covington Eagles. Social hour
is at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:30.
On a sad note, on December 18th our
Club Treasurer, Noble Earl Dawson, passed
away following a long battle with diabetes.
Our prayers go out to his widow, Theresa,
and his children.

The Rovers extend our sympathy to
Theresa Dawson on the loss of her husband
Earl on Dec 18, 2011. He will be missed
by all. He was active in all facets of masonry
from Blue Lodge to Shrine.
The new year started out with a fun night
at the OG Roast at the Temple. Look out
everybody...the fun is just beginning. Who
says we can’t reinvent ourselves?? The bar
for membership was set with the class of
1989 with 504 new Shriners- the picture is
on the “Remember when” board in the
Ballroom – check it out.
Bee proactive in asking friends to join in
the fun. If they aren’t a member – ask them
to join.
Bill and Rick are working hard to keep
our temple looking good; also making
changes with the help from various clubs,
units. It’s our Temple so lets’ use and enjoy
it.

Thursday, February 2. Then, the following
day the Antioch Circus begins. It should be
fun!!!

Inspections, which is a great time to get back
to Lodge to recruit. Let’s get it done!
As the days get longer, winter gets
stronger. It has been cold as a miser’s heart.
It is so cold, a dog froze to the fire hydrant.
It is as uncomfortable as when a nearsighted
hen sat on a snowball. Perhaps it is good
that Valentine’s Day is in February to warm
the heart.

DRUMS
By The Two Pie Eyed Pipers
Here we are in mid January with the
winter still to come. But hopefully it will
only last a couple of months. By then we
will all be ready for Spring time.
Our Pipes and Drum Corps now have a new
Director and a new president. Our new
Director is Everett Bailey and our new
President is Barry Bechler. Steve Argast is our
Vice President, with Jerry Jamieson Secretary
and Joe Joity Treasurer/Quarter Master. We
wish them all well in their duties of the office
they hold. Let us all get behind our officers
and especially our Director and help build this
unit back to where it had once been.
As of this writing we held our installation
with our Ladies dinner night out at Francos’.
Remember our new meeting nights are
Wednesday’s with the first Wednesday of
each month being our business meeting.
The second Wednesday is practice thru
February. After that every Weds. will be
practice excluding the first Weds. The only
upcoming event is the Elegant Evening in
Paris on February 25th. Let’s all do what
we can for the Circus in February.
We wish everyone a very Happy Birthday
and Anniversary for all those that have that
special day in February.

I think about romance, the last thing on my
mind is a short, chubby toddler coming at
me with a bow & arrow!

UNIT

The Photo Unit is working hard on keeping
its New Years Resolution of keeping fit.
But, what happens when you get a room of
Photo Unit members, Divan, and a great
catered meal? Well, shrimp sauce on our
cameras, to many pics’ of the silver ware, and
a missing flash unit. We’ll wait to see if any
one hic-cups and lights up at the same time.
I can’t say now, in a flash, but just as fast
we started buzzzzzing around the Stated
Meeting. We got a start on making sure
Antioch’s new Di-Van is seeing all those little
stars, or dots. Not wanting to be wallflowers,
a hand full of film, we broke into a
run, a run?, and got some great photos at
the O.G. Roast. We picked up our pace to
cover a lot of the Shrine Units and clubs
installations.
With the start of this new month, where
we focus in on picturing the Heart. The
batteries buzzing, and the film clicking fast
through our digital cameras, set on the Circus
mode, our blood moving faster than ISO
6400, we were able to get a great puck of a
picture at the Hockey Match.

Any Noble who participates in the Merit Award Program must purchase at least one book of Circus Tickets
to be eligible to receive points for that year.
Eligibility for these awards is limited to active members of Antioch Shrine. For the following points earned
below you can receive:
Basic Jewel – including Name Bar 1,500 points
First .10 Synthetic Diamond in Star 1,000 points
Next four .10 Synthetic Diamonds in Star (each) 1,000 points
.15 Synthetic Diamonds in Scimitar (total of three) (each) 1,500 points
.25 Synthetic Diamond in Name Bar (total of six) (each) 2,000 points
After the initial Name Bar and 6 Synthetic Diamonds are achieved, this will constitute a complete jewel set
and you MUST switch to using your points for other Merit Merchandise available.
A Noble can also “skip” completion of a complete jewel set and move directly to other Merit Merchandise.
The Merit Merchandise is listed below and is subject to additions (or subtractions) by order of the Potentate.
(FYI..Additional Merit Merchandise is currently being investigated and may be added at the Potentates discretion.
Any updates to this official merit program will be noted in the Crier and on the Website if updates occur.)

How Points are earned:
1. First line signer on a petition of initiation 200 points
2. First line signer on a petition for restoration, affiliation, or association 50 points
3. At Potentates discretion and amount varies
4. Active Unit Member attending and participating in a Potentate’s call Parade 50 points
5. Active Unit Member attending and participating in a Great Lakes Shrine Association (GLSA) Session
Competition 100 points (Note #5 only includes participation in GLSA individual or team competition,
participation in GLSA parade is covered under item #4)
6. Active Unit Member attending and participating in the annual Imperial Session 200 points (Must participate
in Imperial Parade to obtain points)
7. Active Unit Member, on request of the Potentate, attending and participating in a Ceremonial at the Antioch
Shrine 25 points
8. Active Member providing transportation to and from Shriners Hospitals 100 points
Points are non-transferable. Points are not valid when a member becomes a non-member (demit, suspended,
resigned, deceased). No loose synthetic diamonds, Nobles can only receive one when mounted on the Merit
Award.
Points cannot be replaced for any reason. Directors and Club Presidents must submit requests for points
to the Recorder not later than thirty days following the activity. Any submitted after this point will be
subject to the Potentate’s discretion if they are approved. Merit Points will not be awarded to Nobles or Unit
Men participating in non-Potentate’s calls. Directors must still have Potentate’s approval to participate in these
events.

As you read this the circus will be under
way. OK you clowns, you have practiced
very hard, so let’s get it right. With the
change of date we all hope that the circus
will be a good one.
Found out that my grandsons bicycle
can’t stand alone, it is two tired.
Show me a piano falling down a mineshaft
and I’ll show you a -flat miner.
I read in the paper that a professor

Sorry, I would like to apologize for no
article in the January Crier. December was
a very busy month for me along with all the
parties.
Our Unit had a Christmas get together at
Rob’s in Brookville, Ohio. Had a good
turnout and everyone shared in an enjoyable
evening. I’m sure no one is complaining
about the mild winter we have had so far this
year with very little snow and ice.
Betty and I went to the Funsters
Christmas Party in Huntsville and had a
great time. The food was excellent along
with all the fun and entertainment everyone
enjoyed that evening.
All of us in the Escort are looking forward
to another good time this year during the
parade season. Hoping many of us will be
planning to ride to Charlotte, North Carolina
for the Imperial Convention this year. A stop
off in the Smokey’s on the way back would
make for a great trip. I would like to see a
good turnout down there with all our
members present. Let’s try and plan for that
trip. Just a note to our 3 new members, you
would really enjoy an Imperial Convention.

GUARD

The Provost extends a wish for a very
Happy Valentine’s Day to all Nobles and
their loved ones. This is a special month to
go all out for the lacy cards, flowers and
heart shaped boxes of chocolates. Make your
Lady happy with one or all three!
After thoughts about our Ladies, what is
upmost in a Provost Guard’s mind this
month is our fun-filled Antioch Shrine
Circus. We have our uniforms starched, our
shoes polished and ready for the smiling
faces of the children. Whether it’s assisting
the little ones to the elephant ride or pony
ride we take our time with the circus to heart.
We will be working the Shrine Circus this
year without our leader. Chief Roger
DeLong is still laid up with what seems like
non-stop medical issues. He has one
operation and another quickly follows.
Remember to pray for our troops fighting
in harms way and add a prayer for our
Chief DeLong.
WARREN COUNTY
SHRINE CLUB

On December 1, 2011, the Warren
County Shrine Club Christmas meeting was
held at Yankee Trace Country Club. The
Christmas program included a visit from
Santa and gifts for the Ladies.
Again Gary and Freda Bailey were
recognized for their outstanding contributions
to the Club during the past year. Also
Our thanks to all those who have helped with
the “JTM” fund raising for our club and all
the other members who have supported our
Club during 2011.
Our planning and special election meeting
was held on January 5, 2012 at the
Waynesville Masonic Lodge. The dates for
events for 2012 were selected with much
discussion of various fund raising activities
and where our Club should meet. We will
continue with meeting at Yankee Trace for
at least the next two meetings.
Election of the 2012 slate of officers was
held and the following were elected Rich
Greene, President; Bill Montgomery, Vice
President; Gary Bailey, Treasurer and Brad
Gamblin, Secretary.
Our February meeting will include
installation of officers as well as an
interesting program.
GUN CLUB

The Gun Club’s installation of
officers was held last month at
our meeting at the Alpha Lodge in Dayton.
Taking the oath of office for 2012 was
President Jim Free, Vice President Mike Free
and Secretary/Treasurer Tom Hail. We
already have several events planned for
Nobles and their Ladies and friends. The
club voted in a slate of officers to usher in
the new year for the Gun Club’s ever-growing
membership.
Our club had the privilege of honoring a
Noble responsible for the successful
incorporation of our club into the Shrine
fellowship. Over 70 Gun Club members and
Ladies were on hand as Roland Williams
Past Potentate ’07 was honored. He was
presented with a plaque thanking him for his
assistance in chartering the Antioch Gun
Club along with a lifetime membership.

February is the only month that ends on the
same weekday as it begins. February brings
Azizah Temple back to work after the holidays.
We will have a ceremonial at our
February 16 session. If the weather permits,
try to come. The officers will appreciate your
support.
Put March 15 on your calendar. We will
have a memorial service and the election of
officers. And after election comes the
installation of officers. Wouldn’t it be nice
if our nation could elect and install its’
president with the efficiency that we do?
In the past three months, several of our
Ladies, including Queen Pat, have had some
serious health problems. When you send
your card to a member who is ill or
grieving, please remember to call Dees,
297-4044, so a card from the Temple can
be sent also.

Greetings my fellow Nobles,
I hope everyone’s new year is off to a great start!
2012 began with an exciting event – the Tournament of Roses Parade. I had the opportunity
to ride on our health care system’s float, along with national patient ambassador Kate Hickman,
Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Los Angeles patient Marius Woodward, Chairman of the Board
of Trustees Doug Maxwell, Imperial Sirs Wayne Lachut and Raoul Frevel, and Illustrious Sirs Peter
Rippenstein and Robert Secoy.
You may not realize it, but waving and smiling for more than three hours can be a little tiring.
Fortunately, the spectators’ admiration and passion for our hospitals made it a lot easier for me.
During the parade, a nice surprise was seeing our other national patient ambassador, Alissa Perkins,
and her family, in the crowd cheering for us.
Televised on ABC, NBC, CBS and HGTV networks, the parade brought our organization a
tremendous amount of exposure. Also, the Grand Marshall of the parade, J.R. Martinez, was gracious
enough to participate in a 30-second PSA about Shriners Hospitals for Children that aired during
the broadcast. Martinez is an actor who was severely burned during his tour of duty in Iraq and is also known for his performances
on the television program “Dancing with the Stars.” Another event highlight was having our float win the Tournament Volunteers’
Award. I would like to thank everyone whose hard work led to that recognition.
Last month, I attended the service awards luncheon for employees at Shriners International Headquarters in Tampa, Fla. During
the event, Executive Vice President of Shriners International and Past Imperial Potentate, Jack H. Jones, along with staff members
Zorrie Muskovac, Janey Fisher and John Moose were given awards in recognition of their 30 years of service to our organizations.
I would like to thank all of them for their hard work, dedication and loyalty to Shriners International and Shriners Hospitals
for Children.
My next stop was Nashville, Tenn., where Patty and I attended the Christmas party at the Al Menah Shrine Temple. At the party,
we read Christmas stories to 50 patients from Shriners Hospitals for Children. The best part of the evening was seeing the expression
on each of the children’s faces when they were given a brand new bicycle, donated by a local company in Nashville. There isn’t
anything more gratifying than witnessing giant smiles on children’s faces.
I also had the pleasure of visiting Shriners Hospitals for Children – Greenville, where I was given a tour by one of the patients.
It was my first time there; I was able to see the new prosthetics room and the cutting-edge services they have to offer. Later in the
day, I had an enjoyable lunch with some of the hospital staff and the opportunity to learn more about these wonderful people.
I then headed to Spartanburg, S.C., to watch the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas. If you have never been to the game, it is a definite
must! The event is the biggest of the high school Shrine bowl games and had a packed stadium of close to 14,000 people in
attendance. The nationally televised game also brings a significant amount of publicity to our organization. It was a great game;
the North Carolina team was able to come from behind and win 26-19.
Speaking of football, we are just about one week away from the 87th East-West Shrine Game®. For those of you who can’t make
it to St. Petersburg, Fla., be sure to watch the broadcast live on the NFL network. Coverage of the game will start at 3:30 p.m. EST
on Saturday, January 21!
Finally, I sent out an e-mail last month announcing the decision to hire Leo Burnett as our new marketing partner. Leo Burnett
has an outstanding creative team with extensive strategic experience in health care and not-for-profit communications. I am looking
forward to the positive impact this new partnership will have on both our hospitals and fraternity.

CABIRI
By Noble Harry “The Hat”
The CABIRI is an organization
composed of
Antioch’s Past Potentates and Emeritus
officers. We meet once a month to socialize
and discuss matters of mutual interest and
are updated with recent information about
the Shrine International and Antioch Shrine.
We support the current Potentate and his
Divan and are periodically briefed by them.
We are also supportive of the Shrine
Hospitals, the Circus, membership, and all
functions and fundraisers for Antioch. We
are not political nor a policy making body
for Antioch. We are here to help, when
requested.
Following a short roast, the junior Past
Potentate Bill Garlow was acquainted with
the ancient and abstruse mysteries of the
CABIRI Club (he was initiated). His duties
are to do whatever the CABIRI President
asks.

2011. In addition, Ed Molen PP was
thanked and congratulated for serving 9
years as a member of the Board of Directors
for the Lexington Hospital and being
honored by being awarded an Emeritus
Cincinnati Hospital
Last year Doctor Kagan asked that we
purchase a Fractured Laser Machine so
we can treat the kids that have burn
injuries but are healed except for the scar
tissue that is formed from the burns.
This laser will reduce the amount of scar
tissue that is visible on the child. This
will improve the quality of life for the child
by reducing the visibility of the scar
tissue. Antioch along with the Miami
County and Champaign County Shrine
Clubs has raised $136,500 for this laser.
Doctor Kagan told me last week that the
machine has been ordered and he already
has some patients lined up to use the
machine when it comes in. He also told
me the final cost of the machine was
$139,000 and ask if I can come up with
the extra $3,500. I said I would go back
to the Clubs and Units besides Miami and
Champaign and ask for help. So I am
asking, if you can donate to this worthy
cause send me a check with Dr. Kagan’s
Laser in the memo line. Any amount will
be greatly appreciated.

Temple. The classes will be held on the 2nd
and 4th Mondays of the months of Jan., Feb.,
