Temple University is looking forward to welcoming campers back to the 

Ambler campus for Summer 2022. Our camps provide hands-on learning 

for youth to learn about specific areas of interest, build new skills, 

increase confidence, and experience a college campus. 

This year, our camps will focus on students in middle school and high 

school (rising 6th graders through rising 12th graders). Most camps will 

be structured as 2-week, full-day camp sessions, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

In addition, we will have some online camp sessions for all grade levels, 

starting with rising 2nd graders. 

Early Bird Discount 

Register and pay for camps by April 30, 2022 and receive a 10% early bird 

discount. Discount applies only to the camp fee.

The Southwest Belmont Community Association (SWBCA) serves the 

Philadelphia community and its surrounding areas through its service 

programs, youth scholarships, and philanthropy efforts to empower youth, 

adults, and families and promote a positive self-image. At the Temple 

University College campuses, the SWBCA continues to generously provide 

financial assistance to students in PreK through 12th grade, so they can 

participate in various University College-sponsored community programs 

related to horticulture, pre-college activities and summer camps.

LIFE IN MOTION: EXPLORING SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING 

Instructor: Deanna Form 

Grades: Rising 6th to 8th graders 

Motion is a fundamental property of the universe. It’s a kind of puzzle because every object in 

the universe is in motion. During this 2-week camp, we’ll explore science and engineering in 

motion through hands-on activities, observations, and experiments. You will work individually, 

as well as in cooperative teams, to complete tasks in a specified amount of time. Experience 

what it might be like to work as a scientist or engineer in a fun, summer camp setting with fellow 

STEM enthusiasts. Camp Fee: $595, plus $30 materials fee 

FILM DESIGN AND EDITING 

Instructor: Eileen Spaniak 


Learn how to make and edit movies for YouTube while learning the professional software Adobe 

Premiere. Be involved in activities such as storyboarding, gathering information for productions, 

videotaping, and editing the final product. Basic computer knowledge and creativity is required. 

Campers will work in groups. Camp Fee: $595, plus $30 materials fee

EXPLORE THE ARTIST IN YOU 

Instructor: Staff 


Develop your creativity in this camp designed to promote your artistic ability. You will engage 

in experiences in drawing, painting, sculpting, creating collages, and much more. Learn 

foundational skills of drawing and painting, how to break down shapes to create larger images, 

and the basics of color. Campers will use their observational skills and gain familiarity with 

diverse media. This two-week camp is open to all skill levels. Camp Fee: $595, plus $30

LEGO ROBOTICS ACADEMY 

Instructor: Andrew Hollstein 


Discover how to create incredible robot inventions using Lego® Mindstorms. Combine Lego® 

pieces, motors, sensors, and computer software to create moving robots that react to light, avoid 

obstacles, and do all sorts of amazing things! Campers will work in cooperative learning groups 

to create robots and participate in daily challenges. Then, enjoy some fun, intense head-to-head 

“battle bot” style competitions. But don’t worry about destroying your robot like typical “battle 

bots.” The competitions will include exciting battles like Sumo Robots and Robot Jousting. Learn 

more advanced building and programming, as well as how to coordinate with other teams. 

Activities will stimulate and educate campers, showing them that robotics and engineering can 

be super fun! Camp Fee: $545, plus $30 materials fee 

TAKE THE STAGE THEATER CAMP 

Instructor: Emily McVittie 


Putting on a play is more than just costumes, applause, and bows. Discover what an audition 

is like. Play games that build your confidence and improve your skills. Create and act out 

monologues and short scenes. Develop your creative expression and public speaking skills to 

create rapport with the audience. Campers will perform for parents at the end of the two-week 

camp session. Camp Fee: $545, plus $30 materials fee

SPEAKING WITH CONFIDENCE: COMMUNICATIONS AND DEBATE FOR TEENS 

Instructor: Traci Dougherty 


Do you get nervous when asked to speak or give a presentation in front of your class or an 

audience? Join us in a fun and relaxed atmosphere where you will learn to develop your public 

speaking skills. Build your confidence and alleviate anxiety when speaking before people. 

Students will participate in viewing and evaluating speeches as well as in writing various styles 

of speeches. Then, explore arguing in a civilized way. Discover how to better verbally express 

your thoughts, leverage facts, and persuade others. Students will learn how to research and 

create a well-thought-out argument. Debate topics will be picked on a wide scale, and the 

debate process will be taught and executed within the camp. This camp will help to develop 

confidence, critical thinking, and realizing different perspectives. Camp Fee: $545, plus $30

HEROES BEHIND THE BADGE 

Instructor: Temple University Ambler, Criminal Justice and Police Academy Staff 


One-Week Camp: July 5 to July 8, 2022 

This one-week camp provides the opportunity to establish positive relationships with law 

enforcement and public safety personnel like police officers, park rangers, and EMTs. Meet 

them, hear their stories, then learn and practice the basic skills of a first responder! Activities 

include physical fitness, raising the colors, and team-building exercises. Learn basics of fire 

safety, crime scene processing and evidence collection, resource protection, personal safety, 

and more! Camp Fee: $195, plus $30 materials fee

JULY 18 TO 29, 2022 



SEAPERCH ROBOTS 

Instructor: Staff, Temple University College of Science and Technology 


Get ready to dive into the world of underwater robots! SeaPerch is an innovative underwater 

robotics program that equips campers with resources to build an underwater remotely operated 

vehicle (ROV) while learning about robotics, engineering, science, and math. Campers will work 

in cooperative learning groups and teams will test their robots, competing in challenges in the 

campus pool (campers will not be in the pool; no swimming required). Prizes will be awarded 

based on design, planning, and skills. Join us for a fun, multidisciplinary learning experience! 

Camp Fee: $625, plus $30 materials fee 

INTRODUCTION TO SCREENWRITING 

Instructor: Matt Mullen 


All film-making begins with a screenplay. In this 2-week camp, students will be introduced 

to the fundamental elements of screenwriting and discover how to put together a screenplay. 

Learn about story structure, screenplay format, storyboard creation, character creation, and 

more. Through exercises and collaborative workshops, students will develop original ideas and 

complete an original short screenplay. Join us for and learn the basics of structuring your story 

to finalizing your masterpiece. Camp Fee: $595, plus $30 materials fee 

CAREERS IN HORTICULTURE AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION 

Instructor: Staff, Ambler Arboretum of Temple University and Montgomery County 

Conservation District 


Discover the wide variety of opportunities that are available in the horticulture and green 

industries, including landscape architect/designer, greenhouse manager/grower, florist, 

aquaponics/hydroponics, botanical illustrator, and more! We utilize the Ambler Arboretum, 

greenhouse, and outdoor gardens and trails for our daily activities. Also, explore what 

environmental conservation is all about! Experience nature through hands-on activities. Gain 

insights into our natural resources and their proper management. Learn about watersheds, water 

conservation, and stormwater practices that can be used at home. Have fun while exploring nature 

becoming a steward of the environment. Camp Fee: $595, plus $30 materials fee

AUGUST 1 TO AUGUST 12, 2022 



SUMMER STEM ACADEMY: MIDDLE SCHOOL EDITION 

Instructor: Staff, Temple University College of Science and Technology 


Embark on engaging challenges in mathematics, science, and computer science. Math 

challenges will be individualized based on the current level of achievement and will include fun 

applications and incentives. The science program will focus on “neighborhood ecology.” The 

underpinning life and physical science will be incorporated as students make measurements 

on samples collected using simple and safe materials. Data collected from students will be 

shared and discussed. Our computer science curriculum will incorporate instruction in Python 

programming and applications to “Big Data,” appropriately sized data for middle school 

students. Finally, multiple robotics challenges will be offered. Campers will work in cooperative 

learning groups as they progress through the activities, challenges, and competitions.

EXPLORING DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND PHOTOSHOP 



Here’s your chance to get creative with digital photography! You will learn basic photography 

skills and how to shoot pictures with your digital camera and download the pictures onto a 

computer. Take pictures around the Ambler campus and then work with them in the computer 

lab. Using Adobe Photoshop, discover the most effective ways to make your photos into your own 

personal work of art. Topics will include understanding the Photoshop workspace, re-sizing, 

rotating and cropping images, correcting color, retouching images, and more. No experience 

is necessary. All digital cameras, from the simplest to the most complex, will work. Bring your 

cameras and your creativity! Camp Fee: $595, plus $30 materials fee 

CREATIVE WRITING FOR TEENS 



Express your own thoughts in short stories, poetry, personal essays, and other genres in our fun, 

supportive atmosphere. Develop your own voice and writing style. Each day, you will participate 

in freewriting exercises to help develop your skills. You will have the opportunity to share your 

writing ideas and improve your skills, as you receive feedback from the other students and the

We are excited to announce that the Ambler 

Area YMCA will be holding their Sports Camps 

at the Temple University Ambler campus for 

Summer 2022. These camps are designed for 

youth ages 6 to 11. 

Campers can choose from basketball, soccer, 

tennis, or a sports combo camp for those 

looking to try a new sport or wanting to learn 

about sports. 

The Ambler YMCA Sports Camps will be 

offered in one-week camp sessions, starting 

Monday, June 27 and ending Friday, August 

12.

SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM IN MATHEMATICS (ONLINE)

Grades: Rising 1st-5th graders 

Whether you call it the summer setback or the summer slide, the learning loss students 

experience over summer can have significant impact on their performance in the upcoming 

school year. 

The Summer Bridge Program in Mathematics is designed to help minimize students’ loss of skills 

by giving them an instructor-led environment in which to review and practice skills or receive 

guided instruction on key topics covered in the grade they’re entering. Presented as a “Visit to 

the Teacher’s Desk,” these classes are designed to help your child review key skills from the 

previous grade or be prepared for the new school year. 

Each course is taught by a dedicated instructor who has experience working with elementary 

school students. While the courses are held online, they are interactive, and students will be 

able to ask questions in real time. Each course consists of 12 sessions, 50 minutes each. Courses 

are divided into either a 6-week or 3-week schedule. In addition to the scheduled class sessions, 

students will have access to recorded versions of each class session which can be used to 

preview topics, replace sessions if the student is unable to attend, or review content from a 

different perspective.

The class covers basic arithmetic, including number families, place value, and addition and 

subtraction through two digits, including carrying and borrowing; counting, adding, and 

subtracting with coins; time, including reading digital and analog clocks to whole and half hours; 

measurement basics; introduction to graphs; basic geometry including essential characteristics 

of shapes; fractions up to quarters. 

Grade 2 

The class covers basic arithmetic through addition and subtraction of three-digit numbers, 

including place value and adding multiples of the same number; counting, adding, and 

subtracting with coins; time, including reading digital and analog clocks to quarter hours; 

measurement, including both English and Metric System units; graphs and data representation; 

geometry including essential characteristics of shapes and area measurement using square 

units; fractions up to ninths. 

Grade 3 

The class covers basic arithmetic through addition and subtraction up to four digits, and 

multiplication and division to three digits; foundations of algebra including sequences and 

basic properties of operations; time, including reading digital and analog clocks to minutes and 

solving time problems; measurement, including both English and Metric System units of length, 

area, volume and weight; graphs and data representation; geometry including two and three 

dimensional shapes, and area and perimeter; fractions including labeling a number line. 

Grade 4 

The class covers arithmetic including numeration to 1,000,000, adding and subtracting to five 

digits, and multiplication and division to five total digits; foundations of algebra including 

sequences and basic properties of operations; measurement including both English and 

Metric System units of length, area, volume and weight, and unit conversions; graphs and data 

representation; geometry including parallel and perpendicular lines, angle measurement, types 

of triangles, and symmetry; fractions including addition and subtraction of mixed numbers,

INSTITUTE OF READING DEVELOPMENT (ONLINE) 

Strengthen skills, build confidence, and enjoy reading! Help your child become a confident, 

enthusiastic reader in the Summer Reading Skills Programs, offered by Temple University, 

University College, and taught by instructors from the Institute of Reading Development. 

These programs teach key reading skills for every grade, from phonics and sight words 

for younger children, to comprehension, textbooks strategies, and writing skills for older 

children, and everything in between. Guided by a knowledgeable and support teacher, 

students in these programs experience reading success, developing their skills and building 

confidence in outstanding books at the right level of challenge for each age/grade level. 

Students will attend weekly live, online classes that build skills and provide great experiences 

with terrific books. Between class sessions, students will practice reading and complete 

fun, interactive lessons that develop core skills and build confidence. There are a variety of

The ACT Live-online Blitz is an intensive test prep program that provides students with the 

tools they need to prepare for and succeed on the ACT®. ACT Blitz classes, offered during the 

academic year, are strategically scheduled for the weeks leading up to the most popular ACT 

test dates. Classes are scheduled to allow time to practice new skills between sessions. Our 

multi-week course format allows abundant opportunities for learning and for interacting with 

our expert instructors. The ACT Blitz classes are currently offered live, online in a synchronous 

format, providing you with the opportunity to interact in real-time with our expert instructors. 

The Live-Online ACT Blitz is offered online using Adobe Connect, a free browser plug-in. All you 

need are a high-speed internet connection, speakers or head phones, and Adobe Flash Player, 

which can also be downloaded for free.

TEMPLE UNIVERSITY COVID-19 INFORMATION 

Please note that this information is as of January 2022. As situations change, we will 

update our COVID-19 policies accordingly. For the most up-to-date information, please

VACCINATION 

Due to the rise in COVID-19 cases in our area and in accordance with new mandates 

issued by the city of Philadelphia Board of Health, Temple University now requires all 

students, faculty, staff and contractors to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 in order 

to safeguard the health and wellness of our community. This policy applies to you if: 

• You are eligible to be vaccinated (i.e. you are 12 years old or older). 

• You are participating in a course or program that takes place in person on one of 

Temple’s Pennsylvania campuses, or in another US location. 

• Temple is providing you with two ways to comply with this policy. You can: 

1. Upload a vaccination record, such as a CDC-issued card or other proof of 

vaccination from a medical provider. 

2. Request a religious or medical exemption. 

• After you have completed your registration, you will receive information how to 

upload your vaccine records and/or request an exemption. 

MASKING 

Temple University is currently requiring all students, faculty, staff, and contractors 

to remain masked in indoor spaces regardless of vaccination status. Your face mask 

should cover your nose and mouth at all times. 

Temple University recommends one of the following three mask options: 

• a surgical mask made of multiple layers, 

• a surgical mask doubled up with a cloth one, 

• or a KN95.

CAMP LOCATION 

In-person camps will be held at the Temple University Ambler campus, located at 580 

Meetinghouse Road, Ambler, PA 19002. 

HOURS OF OPERATION 

In-person camps are offered as full-day camps, from 9 AM to 4 PM. Campers may be 

dropped off as early at 8:30 AM. Camp ends at 4 PM but parents have until 5 PM to pick 

up campers. We regret that we are not able to provide additional before care or after 

care hours. 

EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT 

Register and pay by April 30, 2022, and receive 10% off the camp fee, unless otherwise 

noted. Camp prices listed on our website through April 30th reflect the Early Bird 

Discount. Materials and computer lab fees are not eligible for discount. 

MULTI-SESSION DISCOUNT 

Save 10% when registering your child for 3 or more camp sessions. 

SIBLING DISCOUNT 

Save 10% for each child attending camp during the same week. 

Note: Only one discount applies. You are not able to apply multiple discounts. 

PAYMENT 

Full payment is due upon registration. 

REFUND AND WITHDRAWAL POLICIES 

A participant who withdraws from a summer camp, three weeks prior to the camp 

starting date, will receive a refund minus a $50 withdrawal fee. All withdrawals must 

be received in writing and can be sent by email to ncce@temple.edu. We regret that 

we cannot provide refunds for camp withdrawals less than 3 weeks prior to the camp 

starting date.
