The resultingworks of art containan ethereal quality difficult to matchwith other mediums.As an artist it helps to go with theflow and Orange City’s Judy Thompsonhas done exactly that as she’s navigatedlife’s path toward the pursuit ofprofessional art.Beginnings“As a kid, I loved to read and I wascaptivated by the drawings and illustrations.It amazed me that someonecould make a story come aliveby creating pictures,” Thompsonsaid. “I particularly liked pen andink drawings and was fascinated thatyou could draw just about anything byusing lines. I was hooked and spentcountless hours drawing.”Growing up in a western suburbof Chicago, Thompson attended alarge high school with an extensiveart program and she enrolled in verysingle one of them, even securing anJudy Thompson’s watercolor works of art grace the walls of not only her Orange City home, butseveral N’West Iowa hospitals and clinics, numerous art galleries, and even the book covers for theLaura Ingalls Wilder Pioneer Girl project by the South Dakota Historical Society Press.art scholarship.Her artistic endeavors howeverwould end up taking a bit of a pauseas life took her in other directions.“We’ve all heard the ‘starving artist’motif and my parents encouraged meto go a different direction so I startedthinking of art more as a hobby thana career,” Thompson said. “But I thinkif you’re creative it’s hard to leave itcompletely.
