4.A. Read and discuss.

The 9 Best University Courses to Study

University is an exciting time in a young person’s life, but it also

involves a lot of big decisions. Choosing the right place in which to study

is fraught with dilemmas, for instance, yet it’s nothing compared to

the decision of what to study. You have to think long term and seriously

consider how your choice is going to affect the rest of your career – a

frightening prospect when you’re leaving home for the first time.

Therefore, it helps to understand what courses can be considered

a solid bet, especially if you’re not too sure what to settle on.

The degrees on this list are all highly employable with many of them

representing a flexible pathway into a variety of industries; they are also

12 12

>>

Livro_ChallengeOnCampus [impressão] [08-02-22].indd 12 08/02/2022 22:46:44

valued in industries that are only set to grow and expand.

So, if you’re struggling to make up your mind, then why not consider

one of these nine choices? These are the best courses to study at university:

Nursing Mathematics Computer Science Mechanical Engineering.

Marketing / Business Studies Law Accounting Architecture. Medicine.

https://www.careeraddict.com/best-courses

4.B. Answer the questions according to the text:

a) What kind of decisions should a student make to choose a university course?

b) What do students need to consider to choose a university course that’s right for them?

c) According to the text, why are the degrees on the list highly employable?

d) Do you agree with the text? Why? Why not?

e) Would you add any other course into this list?

4.C. Reading Strategies: Skimming

Skimming is reading rapidly in order to get a general overview of the text.

How do you skim a text?

1- You should use as many clues as possible to give you some

background information.

2- There might be pictures or images related to the topic

or an eye-catching title.

3- Let your eyes skim over the surface of the text and look out

for key words while thinking about any

clues you’ve found about the subject.

4- Read the title, subtitles and subheadings to find out what the text is about.

5- Look at the illustrations to give you more information about the topic.

6- Read the first and last sentence of each paragraph.

7- Don’t read every word or every sentence.

4.D. Skim the text and tell what it is about:

The Importance of Community Nurses

By Rachel Marshall

Community nurses, also known as district nurses, play a crucial

role in the primary health care team. They are qualified nurses

who provide care and support for patients out of hospital, mostly

in patients' own homes, in clinics based in GP surgeries or within

health centres. They can be assisted by health care assistants

who may visit to assist with tasks that need extra hands, but surprisingly

few people know about how much they really do. 13 >>

3.E. Based on the texts about Radhika and Saad Khazim, write a five line

text about your university.

I chose to study at _____________________because _______________________.

4.A. Read the text and see if you agree with Jerod’s opinion:

What is the difference between a good and a bad university?

All of them follow almost the same courses

A good university:

1. Helps prepare you for the working world (the current world),

2. Has more graduates that have an entreprenural mindset,

3. Focuses on quality education rather than how many students it brings in, and

4. Always passes students who deserve a passing grade and recognises that

they do deserve a passing grade.

A bad or terrible university:

1. Has more students and focuses on getting more students taking its courses and degrees,

2. Requires students to take on unnecessary courses so that they make more money,

3. They focus on passing students that do not deserve a passing grade, and

4. They charge an arm and a leg that results in an education that yields no job

prospects for the students. Meaning their investment in the university will be

fruitless in most cases.

4.B. In pairs. Discuss the questions:

4.C. Reading Strategies: Scanning.

Scanning is a reading strategy used to find specific information,

words or phases in the text.

Look for bond print and italic

Look for words in large font size

Look for key words related to your topic

Look for pictures and numbers

The first challenge of the university application process is deciding which universities to apply to. You can choose

your selection of universities randomly, or you can spend months deciding on the best options. So here are some

tips on how to choose a university…

How to Choose a University

1. Make sure you’ve chosen the right subject

It is fundamental to be 100% sure about your subject. If you have doubts

about your choice, read as many things about it as you can. Check

job options, course contents, salaries, etc.

2. Consult university rankings

There are some which give you a general ranking, while others may

have separate tables for each subject. For me, the most important data

was the student-to-staff ratio.

3. Find out what the university library is like

One of the most important things is the library. You will spend a decent

amount of your life in the library, so it should be a comfortable environment.

4. Check the course content

You can check the course content on the university website. If there’s

an area within the subject you’re particularly interested in, check whether

the university has it “on its menu” or not.

4.D. Scan the text and find out the author’s opinion about:

a) The right subject

b) University ranking

c) University library

d) Course contentes

e) What’s the first challenge of a university student?

I think... I believe.... I feel.... I suppose.... Personally, I think....

In my view.... In my opinion.... In my eyes.... It seems to me that....

From my perspective.... From my point of view..... As far as I’m concerned....

3 A UNIVERSITY

4.E. Choose one of the tips above and write a sentence saying your opionion

about it.

STUDENT´S ROUTINE.

1.A. Read what Tiffany says about her typical day at the University and compare

to yours.

At Bournemouth University

Morning initially starts with me waking up two hours before a scheduled

morning lecture. Within those two hours, I have sufficient time to cook

and prepare my breakfast. I like to have a balanced breakfast because I

stay at University for over 5 hours and I don’t like to waste money on meals

unless I am severely peckish. Packing my bag with all the essentials such

as 10 different colored pens, notebook pads and extra layers of clothes for

those freezing lecture halls. 30 minutes before the lecture starts, I catch

the bus to ensure I have at least 10-15 minutes before the official start to

socialize and meet up with my peers.

In the Afternoon, I have a typical 2-hour gap between lectures

during lunchtime. I catch the bus home to eat lunch, a prepared

meal, and switch lecture essentials that I might need, then catch the

bus once again. After that lecture, I follow my peers to the library to

properly review the lessons if I didn’t quite comprehend the material

or need to catch up.

1.B. Answer the questions about Tiffany’s routine:

Why the University of Granada?

National and international rankings reflect the UGR’s outstanding position among the top universities in

Spain and the best in the world. In 2019, Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) — the most

influential system of its kind on the globe — places the UGR as the number one university in the south of Spain and

as the fourth-highest ranked institution at the national level.

The UGR is the most popular destination among European exchange students (Erasmus+) and the European

leader in figures of both incoming and outgoing Erasmus students. It is a welcoming cosmopolitan university:

about 10% of the students enrolled on our undergraduate programmes and 23% of our postgraduate students are

international.

We also give our students the opportunity to take part in an extensive range of international mobility programmes,

thanks to the diverse exchange agreements we maintain with higher education institutions in over 80

countries. >>

4.A. Read the text about MIT and answer the questions:

So why is MIT number one in the world university rankings?

Widely known as MIT, the Institute admitted its first batch of freshmen in 1865 following an effort by

reputed natural scientist William Barton Rogers to found an educational establishment with a focus on the

practicality of industrialising America.

>>

Livro_ChallengeOnCampus [impressão] [08-02-22].indd 28 08/02/2022 22:47:06

a) When was MIT first batch of freshmen?

b) What was the main focus of MIT?

c) What are the most importante fields at MIT?

d) What does Bill Clinton think about MIT?

Today, MIT’s five schools and one college house 34

academic departments along with world-class laboratories

and numerous other facilities. Tellingly, its strengths lie in the

fields of engineering, science and technology, and its exclusivity

involving which students they accept means that only the

very best make the cut.

But Harvard, Stanford and the rest of the universities

in the top 10 can all boast of similar things. MIT’s real selling

point is its expertise at transforming the buds of its students’

technology ideas into hugely successful businesses. Described

by Bill Clinton as having ‘the best technology-transfer

program in the country’, MIT graduates have started thousands

of companies in what they term their own ‘living lab’.

4.B. Now, think of your university and answer the questions:

a) When was your university founded?

b) What are the most important fields in your university?

c) When does the academic year start?

d) What is your university famous for?

e) In your opinion, what is the best characteristic of a university?

4.C. Reading strategy: Predicting and Cognates.

Before reading a text, it is important to make predictions about the text you are about to read.It sets up

expectations based on your prior knowledge about similar topics.

1- Collect data using your senses and knowledge about the topic;

2- Use your senses to make observations;

3- Use the title to activate vocabulary

Now, read these titles and think of some information you know about each

topic. Then, activate some vocabulary. Compare with your partner.

Highlight 10 words that are possible to be predicted only by looking at the title.

World University Rankings 2021

The Times Higher Education World University

Rankings 2021 include more than 1,500

universities across 93 countries and regions,

making them the largest and most diverse

university rankings to date. The table is based

on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators

that measure an institution’s performance

across four areas: teaching, research,

knowledge transfer and international outlook.

This year’s ranking analysed more

than 80 million citations across over 13 million research publications and included survey responses from

22,000 scholars globally.Trusted worldwide by students, teachers, governments and industry experts, this

year’s league table provides great insight into the shifting balance of power in global higher education. The

University of Oxford tops the rankings for the fifth consecutive year, while mainland China’s Tsinghua University

becomes the first Asian university to break into the top 20 under the current methodology (launched in 2011).

The US claims a record eight places in the top 10, after the University of California, Berkeley climbed six

places to seventh, but US universities outside the top 200 show signs of decline.Meanwhile, there are 141 firsttime

entrants in the rankings this year, topped by France’s recently merged Paris-Saclay University (joint 178th).

India has the highest number of new entries (14) and as a result boasts a record number of ranked institutions

(63).

What have you enjoyed most about the programme so far?

No doubt studying law is very challenging and requires a lot of hard work. But I would say I am enjoying

every bit of the struggle and stress. One of the most enjoyable things for me about my programme here

at University of Liverpool is that we are given the opportunity to work at our own pace. More like an independent

learning. Although we have deadlines and everyone is expected to meet the set deadline, the

time frame, I think is sufficient to enable one to conduct their reading and research.

a paragraph (c. 6-7 sentences, 150-250 words) long. A well-written abstract serves multiple purposes:

• an abstract lets readers get the gist or essence of your paper or article quickly, in order to decide whether

to read the full paper;

• an abstract prepares readers to follow the detailed information, analyses, and arguments in your full

paper;

• and, later, an abstract helps readers remember key points from your paper.

If you are writing an abstract for a course paper, your professor

may give you specific guidelines for what to include and how

to organize your abstract. Similarly, academic journals often have

specific requirements for abstracts. So, in addition to following the

advice on this page, you should be sure to look for and follow any

guidelines from the course or journal you’re writing for.

A good abstract should address some important questions:

1. What are your research aims?

2. What are the current approaches and gaps in the literature?

3. Which methodology have you used?

4. What are the main findings?

5. What are the main conclusions and implications? >>

SAMPLE 01

Prevalence and Reasons for Tooth Loss in a Sample from a Dental Clinic in Brazil

This study aims to evaluate the prevalence and reasons for teeth extractions in a

sample from a dental clinic in Brazil. The prevalence of teeth mortality was analyzed

by gender, age, tooth type and reasons for extraction on 800 teeth of 439 subjects,

whose data was collected in clinical records in a convenience sample. The groups

with a range in age from 35 to 44 years, 45 to 54 years and 55 to 64 years revealed

significantly greater number of teeth extractions than other age groups. The anterior

teeth loss increased significantly with aging, while the tooth mortality of premolar and

molar were higher in younger people. Caries, or tooth decay, was the more prevalent

reason for tooth mortality among young and adults up to 44 years old, while the periodontal

disease was the main reason for extractions from 45 years old until range of

81 years . It can be suggested that some reasons for tooth loss were age-dependent,

but caries and the periodontal diseases were the main reasons for tooth mortality in

this Brazilian sample.

SAMPLE 02

The Effects of Computer Science Stereotypes and Interest on Middle

School Boys’ Career Intentions

Like other STEM fields, computer science (CS) lacks representation of Black and Hispanic

individuals, both in the number of bachelor’s degrees obtained and the number

of individuals in the CS workforce. Out-of-school CS programs are often designed with

the intent to inspire young people to pursue careers in CS. Much of this programming

focuses on developing student interest in CS and CS careers. Nevertheless, it is not

well understood how the stereotypes that children hold about computer scientists

contribute to CS interest and career choice. In this study, we set out to examine the

complex relationships between CS interest, held stereotypes, and CS career choice.

We surveyed participants in an after-school CS program offered to middle school boys

who identified with racial and ethnic minority groups (N = 110). We tested three linear

regression models and confirmed that CS interest and socially divergent stereotypes—

those that diverged from societal norms—of computer scientists play unique and

contrary roles in young boys’ career decision-making process even when controlling

for home and school factors. These models suggest educational CS programs should

include curriculum to dispel participants’ socially divergent stereotypes about computer

scientists rather than targeting CS interest alone, particularly if a goal is to inspire diverse

young people to pursue careers in CS.

The impact of coronavirus on higher education

Universities and college campuses are places

where students live and study in close proximity to

each other. They are also buzzing cultural hubs where

students are brought together from nations around

the world. Recently, the foundations of this unique

ecosystem have been impacted significantly by the

rapid spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak,

creating uncertainty regarding the implications

for higher education.

Over the past weeks, education officials have

been forced to cancel classes and close the doors to campuses across the world

in response to the growing coronavirus outbreak. In addition, US institutions have switched classes to online

learning, cancelled spring break trips and students studying abroad in China, Italy and South Korea have been

encouraged to return home to complete their studies.

While class closures, dips in enrollment at the beginning of a new semester and cancellations may be temporary,

it’s hard to foresee whether the novel coronavirus will result in long-term disruption to the higher

education system.

Understanding the economic impact

One of the biggest concerns for the sector at large is the percentage of international students that make

up the domestic higher education markets. In the US alone, Chinese students make up 33.7 per cent of the

foreign student population, while Indian students comprise of 18.4 per cent.

While travel restrictions to and from China have been helpful in slowing down the spread of the disease,

they have also left international students stranded. According to a Covid-19 Survey by the Institute of International

Education (IIE), 830 Chinese students have been unable to return to the US to continue their studies.

While this may be a small percentage of the overall international student population, the question remains: How

long will this last? If the restrictions remain in place, the US higher education system could bear the brunt of

an economic downturn. So, how should universities and colleges around the world adjust their learning styles

to retain program enrollment and provide accessibility to students?

Comorbidities, metabolic changes make elderly more

susceptible to infection

In this Ask the Experts feature, Infectious Disease News Editorial Board member Keith S. Kaye, MD, discusses

the special considerations when treating infections in the elderly.

Are the elderly more susceptible to infections?

Older adults become more susceptible

to infections due to several factors. As people

get older, it is more frequent that they have

comorbid conditions, such as diabetes, renal

insufficiency and arthritis. Many comorbid

conditions, both the number and type of comorbid

conditions, predispose people to infections.

Often, when people age, there is immunosenescence,

which means that the immune

system doesn’t function as well or as vigorously.

The combination of increased comorbid

conditions and the decrease in activity of the

immune system can make people more prone

to infections. The other syndrome that occurs when people become old is frailty. When people become

frail, their body mass index drops and they have a harder time functioning independently, in terms of their

daily living activities. They become more prone to falls and injuries. All of these things predispose older

people to infections. There is an increased association with being older and an increased risk of infection,

but it probably has more to do with how successfully some people age. Some people age and they remain

active and healthy, and individuals such as that probably do not have an increased risk of infections. But

individuals who become frailer and more dependent on others for maintaining their health status and their

daily activities, their risk for infections increases greatly.

Are infections in the elderly more common in places such as nursing homes, or are they prevalent

in the entire elderly population?

58 58

What you start seeing is that people who need a lot of assistance or have comorbid conditions are more

likely to end up in assisted living facilities or nursing homes. So, some of the highest-risk older adults are

>>

Livro_ChallengeOnCampus [impressão] [08-02-22].indd 58 08/02/2022 22:47:32

in nursing homes. I do think that there is an association between increased age in general and infection

risk. You have to be careful not to lump all older adults into one single category. Older people in general

may be at increased risk for infection, but there are certainly subsets of older adults, some of whom that

are at increased risk and some of whom really are not.

What special considerations are there when treating infections in the elderly?

Treating infections in older adults is a special niche. One thing that needs to be considered is the side effects

and tolerability of the medications. Sometimes, in older adults, their metabolism and their clearance

of medications changes as they get older. Also, they are often on other medications. Sometimes, they

can be susceptible to side effects of medications, so the side effect profile of medications must be taken

into account when treating infections in the elderly. You want to take into account the other medications

they are taking and also their renal function and how well you dose the medication. Other side effects of

antibiotics include Clostridium difficile, which ironically, is caused by antibiotic use. We used to think that

antibiotics were harmless. If there is any concern about whether or not people might have an infection,

particularly those adults who are in institutions such as nursing homes, we need to be more thoughtful

about who really needs antibiotics. It used to be that if a patient had a positive culture in their urine, you

treated it regardless. But now, we have to think about whether someone truly has an infection or is just

colonized, as antibiotics use can lead to superinfections.

A brief introduction to the Chinese education system

https://www.open.edu/openlearn/education

This article outlines the structure of the Chinese education system and the study

hours expected at a Chinese school.

Structure of the Chinese education system

In China, the education is divided into three categories: basic education, higher education, and

adult education. By law, each child must have nine years of compulsory education from primary school

(six years) to junior secondary education (three years).

>>

59 59

Livro_ChallengeOnCampus [impressão] [08-02-22].indd 59 08/02/2022 22:47:32

Basic Education

Basic education in China includes

pre-school education (usually three years),

primary education (six years, usually

starting at the age of six) and secondary

education (six years). Secondary education

has two routes: academic secondary education

and specialized/vocational/technical

secondary education. Academic secondary

education consists of junior (three years)

and senior middle schools (three years).

Junior middle school graduates wishing to

continue their education take a locally administered

entrance exam, on the basis of which they will have the option of i) continuing in an academic

senior middle school; or ii) entering a vocational middle school (or leave school at this point) to receive

two to four years of training. Senior middle school graduates wishing to go to universities must take National

Higher Education Entrance Exam (Gao Kao). According to the Chinese Ministry of Education, in June

2015, 9.42 million students took the exam.

Higher Education

Higher education is further divided into two categories: 1) universities that offer four-year or

five-year undergraduate degrees to award academic degree qualifications; and 2) colleges that offer

three-year diploma or certificate courses on both academic and vocational subjects. Postgraduate and

doctoral programmes are only offered at universities.

Adult Education

The adult education ranges from primary education to higher education. For example, adult

primary education includes Workers’ Primary Schools, Peasants’ Primary Schools in an effort to raise

literacy level in remote areas; adult secondary education includes specialized secondary schools for

adults; and adult higher education includes traditional radio/TV universities (now online), most of which

offer certificates/diplomas but a few offer regular undergraduate degrees.

Term times and school hours

The academic year is divided into two terms for all the educational institutions: February to

mid-July (six weeks summer vocation) and September to mid/late-January (four weeks winter vocation).

There are no half-terms.

Most schools start from early morning (about 7:30am) to early evening (about 6pm) with 2 hours

>>

60

lunch break. Many schools have evening self-study classes running from 7pm-9pm so students can finish

their homework and prepare for endless tests. If schools do not run self-study evening classes, students

still have to do their homework at home, usually up to 10pm. On average, a primary school pupils spend

about seven to eight hours at school whilst a secondary school student spends about twelve to fourteen

hours at school if including lunch time and evening classes. Due to fierce competitiveness to get into good

universities, the pressure to do well for Gao Kao is intense. Many schools hold extra morning classes in

science and math for three to four hours on Saturdays. If schools do not have Saturday morning classes,

most parents would send their children to expensive cramming school at weekends or organise one-to-one

private tuition for their children over the weekend.

Vitamins and Minerals

Are You Getting What You Need?

Vitamins and minerals are essential nutrients

because they perform hundreds of roles in

the body. There is a fine line between getting enough

of these nutrients (which is healthy) and getting

too much (which can end up harming you). Eating

a healthy diet remains the best way to get sufficient

amounts of the vitamins and minerals you need.

Essential nutrients for your body

Every day, your body produces skin, muscle, and bone. It churns out rich red blood that carries

nutrients and oxygen to remote outposts, and it sends nerve signals skipping along thousands of miles of

brain and body pathways. It also formulates chemical messengers that shuttle from one organ to another,

issuing the instructions that help sustain your life.

But to do all this, your body requires some raw materials. These include at least 30 vitamins,

minerals, and dietary components that your body needs but cannot manufacture on its own in sufficient

amounts.

>>

Vitamins and minerals are considered essential nutrients—because acting in concert, they perform

hundreds of roles in the body. They help shore up bones, heal wounds, and bolster your immune

system. They also convert food into energy, and repair cellular damage.

But trying to keep track of what all these vitamins and minerals do can be confusing. Read enough

articles on the topic, and your eyes may swim with the alphabet-soup references to these nutrients, which

are known mainly by their initials (such as vitamins A, B, C, D, E, and K—to name just a few).

In this article, you’ll gain a better understanding of what these vitamins and minerals actually do

in the body and why you want to make sure you’re getting enough of them.

Harmful use of alcohol kills more than 3 million people each year,

most of them men

62

https://www.who.int/news-room

More than 3 million people died as a result of harmful use of alcohol in 2016, according a report

released by the World Health Organization (WHO) today. This represents 1 in 20 deaths. More than three

quarters of these deaths were among men. Overall, the harmful use of alcohol causes more than 5% of

the global disease burden.

WHO’s Global status report on alcohol and health 2018 presents a comprehensive picture of

alcohol consumption and the disease burden attributable to alcohol worldwide. It also describes what

countries are doing to reduce this burden.

“Far too many people, their families and communities suffer the consequences of the harmful use

of alcohol through violence, injuries, mental health problems and diseases like cancer and stroke,” said

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of WHO. “It’s time to step up action to prevent this

serious threat to the development of healthy societies.”

Of all deaths attributable to alcohol, 28% were due to injuries, such as those from traffic crashes,

self-harm and interpersonal violence; 21% due to digestive disorders; 19% due to cardiovascular diseases,

and the remainder due to infectious diseases, cancers, mental disorders and other health conditions.

Despite some positive global trends in the prevalence of heavy episodic drinking and number of

alcohol-related deaths since 2010, the overall burden of disease and injuries caused by the harmful use of

>>

Livro_ChallengeOnCampus [impressão] [08-02-22].indd 62 08/02/2022 22:47:34

alcohol is unacceptably high, particularly in the European Region and the Region of Americas.

Globally an estimated 237 million men and 46 million women suffer from alcohol-use disorders

with the highest prevalence among men and women in the European region (14.8% and 3.5%) and the Region

of Americas (11.5% and 5.1%). Alcohol-use disorders are more common in high-income countries.

Global consumption predicted to increase in the next 10 years

An estimated 2.3 billion people are current drinkers. Alcohol is consumed by more than half of the

population in three WHO regions – the Americas, Europe and the Western Pacific. Europe has the highest

per capita consumption in the world, even though its per capita consumption has decreased by more than

10% since 2010. Current trends and projections point to an expected increase in global alcohol per capita

consumption in the next 10 years, particularly in the South-East Asia and Western Pacific Regions and the

Region of the Americas.

ABSTRACT

The influence of music therapy (MT) as a support intervention to reduce stress and improve wellbeing in

Clinical Staff (CS) working with COVID-19 patients was evaluated. Participants were enrolled as a result of

spontaneous agreement (n = 34) and were given remote receptive MT intervention over a 5-week period. Their

levels of tiredness, sadness, fear and worry were measured with MTC-Q1 before and after MT intervention.

An immediate significant variation in the CS emotional status was observed. The results seem to confirm that

in an emergency situation, it is possible to put in place a remote MT support intervention for CS exposed to

highly stressful situations.

The socio-emotional world of adolescents with intellectual disability: A drama therapy-based

participatory action research

The Arts in Psychotherapy

Volume 70, September 2020, 101679

ABSTRACT

This study aims to explore accessible methods and techniques that enable adolescents with intellectual

disability (ID) to voice their own opinions and wishes about socio-emotional aspects of their life. Participatory

action research (PAR) calls for the inclusion of marginalized groups, such as people with ID, in

research about them, allowing them to explore aspects of their lives and social environment, and to lead

social change. Including adolescents with ID in research about them requires searching for alternative and

diverse means of communication and expression. Dramatic expression may offer a range of means, verbal

and non-verbal, and include performance, which is a powerful social action within the community. In this

study we applied the ethno-drama-therapy model (Snow et al., 2017) with a group of 11 adolescents with

ID participated in an 11-session drama therapy workshop in which the adolescents learned to express themselves

through dramatic means, such as puppetry and roleplaying, and performed before an audience of

their choice. In the course of the group sessions and the performance, the adolescents portrayed social and

emotional issues that concern them, such as their relations with authority figures. The study demonstrates

the power of drama in exploring, expanding, and expressing the authentic voice and free choice of this silent

group, and presents initial results.

The Reflection of Societal Fears in American Horror Films

Lilek, B. (2020). Horrors of Society: The Reflection of Societal Fears in American Horror Films.

Digital Literature Review, 7. https://doi.org/10.33043

ABSTRACT

The foundation of the Hollywood horror film industry has always been constructed with metaphors of what

haunts American society. By utilizing what society fears in daily life and representing it with ghosts or monsters,

Hollywood was able to make movies scarier than they appeared to be on the surface. In the 1970s and

1980s, children’s television programming began to take the place of reading or playing as the number of

shows and channel rose. Parents began to fear that television programming would take over their children’s

lives. Moving through the decades and into the 2010s this fear only grew as cellphones, tablets, and laptops

became the obsession of American youth. The Hollywood film industry capitalized on these fears in movies

such as Poltergeist (1982) and Poltergeist (2015). These two films worked to represent current issues in

society while also predicting what America would become if these issues were not properly dealt with. 1980s

America did not resolve the issue of television and technology invading homes; thus, the problem grew as

Americans relied more heavily on technological advances. Looking through the lens of Poltergeist (1982) and

Poltergeist (2015) reveals the fears of past decades, how those fears have developed in 2010s American

culture, and where these representations of cultural fears will lead us next.

This paper analyses two Brazilian television series, namely Sexo e as Negas and Mister Brau. The first one

portrays the intimacy of four black women from the slums, highlighting their sexuality. The other series,

called Mister Brau, had as its main theme the social ascension of a couple who acquired fame from popular

music. Both shows address intersectional issues such as race, social class, and gender, which require a

non-essentialist perspective that values interactions between media and society. The main question is: what

tensions and contradictions can we apprehend in these series’ content, relatively, regarding the discursive

lines about racial and gender issues? The shows have people of African descent as their protagonists, howe-

Romantic attachment, unforgiveness and relationship satisfaction in couples: A dyadic mediation

analysis

First Published July 15, 2020 Research Article

ABSTRACT

Adult romantic attachment is strongly associated with couple relationship functioning, and many efforts have

been made to identify the mechanisms underlying this link. Nevertheless, no previous study considered unforgiveness

when investigating the relationship of romantic attachment with relationship satisfaction in couples.

We used the actor–partner interdependence mediation model to explore the associations between romantic attachment

and relationship satisfaction as mediated by unforgiveness (i.e., avoidance and revenge motivations)

in a convenience sample of 104 Chilean couples. The couples completed self-report measures of romantic

attachment, unforgiveness, and relationship satisfaction. Actor insecure attachment was associated with lower

relationship satisfaction directly and indirectly. Indirectly, higher actor levels of attachment anxiety and avoidance

were linked, respectively, to greater revenge and avoidance motivations, and thus to lower relationship satisfaction.

Partner attachment avoidance was associated with lower relationship satisfaction only directly. Higher

partner levels of attachment anxiety were associated with lower avoidance motivation, and thus with higher

relationship satisfaction. These dyadic findings further attest to the detrimental role of attachment avoidance

and unforgiveness against the couple’s functioning. The novel finding that attachment anxiety may indirectly

promote a couple’s relationship satisfaction deserves further investigation. The implications for couple counseling

and therapy are discussed.

Keywords: Actor–partner interdependence mediation model, dyadic approach, relationship satisfaction, romantic

attachment, transgression-related motivations, unforgiveness
