The Chief Executive
KHALED
EL-AHMAD
Good afternoon,
As we continue our transition to some form of normality, as ever I hope that these notes
find both you and your loved ones in good health.
Poya Asbaghi and his coaching team are fiercely committed to this football club.
They appreciate and understand exactly what is expected from a team representing
this supporter base. The run of results is unavoidable and of course, we are not where
we want to be. However, those evasive three points is not down to lack of effort or
commitment.
6
I look back at our last two fixtures and see a side that can compete and should be
achieving more. We have chances and really positive periods in the game, but errors are
costing us dearly. When we are in the position that we are, it’s something that we truly
cannot afford.
With the relentless pile-up of fixtures, the side have immediate opportunities to put right
the mistakes made in previous fixtures. Today’s task will be a challenging one, but if the
team can put in a performance for 90 minutes, which I know they are capable of, there is
no reason why cannot achieve a positive result.
It was a privilege to meet a number of Club partners this week. Over lunch, I was
provided a platform to share my vision for the next few years. Whilst I am excited
about the challenges that lie ahead, overall, the feedback received was in relation to
collaboration and working together to achieve, not only for Barnsley FC, but the town
as a whole. Again, this potential excites me and regardless of form on the field, I look
forward to the development, alongside our valued partners, off it.
Over the last week, we have received several damning reports and letters about the
behaviour of a small minority within our supporter base. As a collective, we have reacted
and had to issue a number of banning orders. We are also working collaboratively with
our Fan Engagement Forum and various supporter groups to move forward.
Notwithstanding the above, the overwhelming majority of Barnsley supporters
are passionate, loyal and committed supporters and do not want the club’s name
associating with these individuals. Despite our current situation, you continue to back
your side, home and away. The 2,300+ at Huddersfield was just as impressive as the
hardy souls that made the trip south to Bedfordshire midweek. Everybody associated
with Barnsley FC cannot thank you enough, and the side will need you once again
today.
Thank you for your continued support and I hope that you enjoy the game.
Best wishes,
Khaled
The Head Coach
POYA
ASBAGHI
A warm welcome back to Oakwell for another Sky Bet Championship
encounter.
I have said previously that we need a positive month of February. We haven’t
got off to the start that we had hoped for, but with games coming so quickly,
we are not in a position where we are dwelling on defeats. Of course, the team
is hurting. I appreciate the pain our supporters are also in, but the lads in the
dressing room and every member of the backroom team is working to put
things right and get those three points.
No game in the Championship is easy, with each side posing different and
on the occasion, unique threats. Luton, on Tuesday evening was frustrating. I
thought in the first half, we were the better side and we gave ourselves a solid
platform to complete the job in the second 45. However, when things aren’t
going your way, it’s difficult to recover from mistakes, and mistakes are often
punished.
9
Of course, we need to be better when we are behind in a game. The easy goals
we are conceding must be prevented. We summarise and reflect, but we must
now learn from our mistakes. We must do this sooner rather than later, because
with the volume of games we have on the horizon, one successful week could
mean that our entire picture can change. Momentum in football is powerful.
Today we welcome Queens Park Rangers to South Yorkshire and every member
of our squad is motivated and prepared for the task at hand. We appreciate
it’s going to be a difficult game, but as I referenced earlier, every fixture in this
league is challenging. However, what I can take from the last defeat is that if we
can play our game, and impose ourselves on the opponent for 90 minutes, there
is absolutely no reason why we cannot come out with a victory.
Finally, I want to end these notes with a special mention to our supporters. 2,300
of you travelled in fantastic voice to Huddersfield last weekend and despite
the conditions and distance, a good number followed us to Luton in midweek.
Everybody at the Club appreciates your commitment and support, especially
during these difficult times. Today, we know that our home crowd, as ever, will
be behind the lads in red.
Thank you for your support and enjoy the game.
All the best,
The Big Interview
DOMINGOS
QUINA

t’s rare that a player arrives at
Oakwell with Premier League and
La Liga experience under his belt,
but in Domingos Quina we have a
special talent in our ranks until the end of the
season as he bids to help us retain our Sky Bet
Championship status.
The Watford loanee has quite an interesting
story, too. Born in Guinea-Bissau, the dynamic
midfielder moved to Portugal at the age of eight,
where he soon joined the SL Benfica academy.
Fitting, given that his father, Samuel, represented
As Águias (the Eagles) for eight years from 1983,
winning three Primeira Liga titles, four Taça de
Portugal trophies and the Supertaça Cândido de
Oliveira twice.
12
Capped five times by Portugal, Samuel was also
involved in two European Cup finals, losing out
to PSV Eindhoven on penalties in 1988 before
succumbing to a 1-0 defeat against an all-star AC
Milan side two years later.
He has certainly passed on his football talent
to Dom, who was named in the Team of the
Tournament at both the UEFA European U17
Championships and UEFA European U19
Championships with Portugal.
“My relationship with my dad regarding football is
like he’d give me advice but let me be myself and
make my own mistakes; he’s not someone who’s
always in my head and telling me to do things,”
began Domingos. “He lets me be myself.”
Reflecting on his personal accolades with the
national team, the 22-year-old is modest and
insists any individual honour is irrelevant if there is
no collective glory at the end of the tournament.
However, the scale of achievement must be
taken into consideration given which players he
was going toe-to-toe with on a global stage.
Up against the likes of Brahim Díaz, Kai Havertz,
Erling Braut Håland and Matthijs de Ligt amongst
others, Dom and his teammates shone to lift those
coveted trophies.
“To be in the Team of the Tournament at the end
of it twice is something that’s amazing, because
there’s a lot of quality players there,” admitted
Dom.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
“Don’t get me wrong, it’s good – but it’s not
something I think about. For me, it’s just to go
there and play, make sure we get the result
we want and it’s more important to win. It
doesn’t matter which tournament we play with
Portugal, it’s all about getting a trophy at the
end of it.
“Our class of ’99 had really good balance and
a good understanding with each other. There
ISSUE SIXTEEN | BARNSLEY VS QUEENS PARK RANGERS

13
were all of these names who were playing at the
tournament, and to win it and be in the Team
of the Tournament is a really big achievement,
but it’s not something that I chase or go into the
tournament thinking about.”
The Portuguese team at those respective
tournaments was brimming with talent.
Household names such as Diogo Dalot, Gedson
Fernandes, Florentino Luís, Francisco Trincão and
ISSUE SIXTEEN | BARNSLEY VS QUEENS PARK RANGERS
Rúben Vinagre all donned the famous maroon
and green kit.
With so much quality in abundance, the team
truly believed they could go on and be successful,
which ultimately proved to be the case.
“We just felt in our head – our generation – that we
could beat anyone,” affirmed Dom. “That’s how
much we trusted ourselves and how much the
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

14
manager allowed us to be ourselves. As a group,
we were really confident.
“We’ve got a lot of good players, and this is
football – it’s taking time for some people. Some
people aren’t playing as much as they should
or want, and I really believe it’s a lot more about
getting a right club and the ’99 generation can
flourish.”
As alluded to at the start of this feature, Domingos’
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
journey began when he joined Benfica as a
youngster following his arrival from Africa.
That was just one of a number of prestigious
academies he would play in. From Lisbon, he
moved to England with Chelsea and then later
West Ham United as he made his name in
London, catching the eye with his creative flair.
“I think I was eight or nine when I started at
Benfica,” recalled Dom. “It’s probably the best time
ISSUE SIXTEEN | BARNSLEY VS QUEENS PARK RANGERS

While at Chelsea’s famed Cobham Training
Ground, Dom was plying his trade alongside
future England stars Tammy Abraham, Reece
James and Mason Mount.
It was his first time in the capital, but he wasn’t
fazed by uprooting his entire life to pursue his
dream – in fact, it was a challenge that he
embraced with open arms.
“To be fair, I was just excited – all I cared about
was football; I wasn’t bothered about the
language and the culture and stuff like that,” he
smiled. “When I came here, it was a bit tough
because of the language, but apart from that I
was just playing football, and that’s all I cared
about.
“So, I was happy.”
In 2016, Dom made the cross-city switch to east
London where he joined the Hammers and was
immediately thrust into the first team set-up on
their pre-season trip to the States.
Soon enough, he would be making his
professional debut as West Ham took on
Slovenian outfit NK Domžale in their UEFA Europa
League third qualifying round, coming on as an
81st minute substitute for Cheikhou Kouyate.
15
“When I signed with West Ham, my agent called
me to say they want me to go to America on preseason
with them, and he asked if I was ready,”
said Domingos. “Do I want to do it or not? I said
‘of course’. He said if I didn’t feel like I was ready,
not to go. So, I went there, and it went well, and I
came back and was training with the first team
and playing some under 23s games.
“When I made my debut, I wasn’t expecting it
because I think we were losing, and I was the first
sub. I was just on the bench and Slaven told me to
get ready to come on.
of my life playing football, because the people I
grew up with were my friends, so we just played
and it was really enjoyable.
“The difference is, it was my language and, like I
said before, most of them were people I grew up
with, so it was different to other academies that I
went to.
“English wasn’t my first language and stuff like
that.”
ISSUE SIXTEEN | BARNSLEY VS QUEENS PARK RANGERS
“It was a proud moment and there was a lot of
emotion going through my head at the time.
“Slaven was good with the players; he’ll ask you
questions about stuff outside football, which I
think is important. I had a good time there when
he was manager of West Ham; I enjoyed it.”
The following season would see him feature four
times for the Hammers’ senior side – all in cup
competitions, with the highlight being a run out at
the Emirates Stadium against Arsenal.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

Those performances, coupled with impressive
displays at U23s level, prompted Watford to prise
him away from east London for a fee reported
to be in the region of £1 million in the summer of
2018.
He made his Hornets debut in a 2-0 victory
at Reading in the League Cup second round,
announcing himself in the most spectacular style
with a stunning 30-yard strike to double his new
side’s lead.
“It’s not just the goal, I think my performance in
that game was good,” recalled the Portuguese
midfielder. “I felt confident and the manager
allowed me to be myself and express myself on
the ball, and I really enjoyed our game.
16
“I remember the goal – I don’t know what I was
thinking because it was too far. There was a
corner and I was one of the two players left back.
Someone headed it and Isaac tried a shot, the
defender just kicked it and I remember the ball
came to me – I drove past two players and I don’t
know what I was thinking.
“I just let it go on my left foot.”
After appearing amongst the substitutes against
Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liverpool earlier
in the campaign, it wouldn’t be long before Dom
was thrust into Premier League action for the first
time.
Top flight debuts don’t come much tougher
than Manchester City as Watford welcomed the
champions to Vicarage Road on a cold Tuesday
night in December 2018.
Lining up for the visitors that evening was an
array of talent: Bernardo and David Silva, Riyad
Mahrez, Leroy Sane and Barnsley academy
graduate John Stones as City edged to a 2-1
victory.
“I was up against world class players,” reminisced
Domingos. “When I came on, we were losing, and
the game was so fast. I didn’t wear my studs and I
was just slipping all over the pitch. One time when
I had the ball, I tried to dribble past Fernandinho,
but with his experience he won the ball and
started a counter-attack.
“I remember Silva was talking to me and trying
to get into my head, so I thought I must be doing
something right for him to be talking to me like
this.”
Under Javi Gracia, it was a good time to be with
the Hertfordshire outfit, who finished 11th in the
Premier League that term and reached a first FA
Cup final since 1984 – only to be brushed aside
6-0 by an all-conquering Man City side, who
completed the English domestic treble.
Domingos’ development was plain to see, and the
step-up from U23s football was stark comparison,
but a big learning curve for the flamboyant
midfielder.
“In the under 23s, you can make mistakes there
and get away with it, but you can’t do that in the
Premier League or Championship,” he asserted. “In
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
17
the Premier League, the things you think you can
do and the time you think you have – someone
will come and take it from you and one mistake
can cost you the game.
“That’s the big thing I noticed.”
Watford were relegated the following campaign,
with four different managers unable to stop them
from sliding into the Championship after a five
year stay in England’s elite.
Dom featured regularly during the first few
months, scoring his first goal of the season in
a comprehensive 4-1 mauling of Preston North
End as the Hornets looked to bounce back to the
Premier League at the first attempt.
He then spent the second half of the term on
loan at Granada CF in La Liga, where he had the
opportunity to showcase his abilities against some
of the best players in the world – going up against
the Galácticos of Real Madrid.
A boyhood dream had become reality for the lad
from West Africa.
“Those are the players that you see on TV or you
play with them on a video game,” insisted Dom.
“To actually be on the pitch with them, you see
ISSUE SIXTEEN | BARNSLEY VS QUEENS PARK RANGERS
18
that they are world class players. I remember
watching Modrić, and every time he had the ball
I thought I could catch him, but he was always
able to pass the ball.
“But there was Toni Kroos and Benzema. It was an
amazing experience, and I could have scored that
game.”
Despite not finding the target against Real, the
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
Watford loanee had already opened his account
in just his second appearance for Nazaríes in a 3-2
defeat at Huesca, before following that up a week
later in a 2-1 victory at home to Elche.
His undoubted talent was shining through, and
he puts it down to competing in a league that is
better suited to his style of play.
“I wish I had more goals, and I wish I was
ISSUE SIXTEEN | BARNSLEY VS QUEENS PARK RANGERS

“The most important thing for me in my head is I
just love football; I have to be playing one way or
another because I think that’s the one way you
can improve as a player.
“As much as you can train, training isn’t the same
as actually playing football. So, I’m open to play
anywhere where I can enjoy my football – I’m
open minded.
“You see young English players moving abroad to
play and you can see the benefit.”
From Andalusia in southern Spain, Domingos
returned to England and spent the first part of this
campaign on loan with high-flying Fulham.
However, game time was hard to come by at
Craven Cottage, with the 22-year-old limited
to just four appearances under Marco Silva in a
frustrating period.
“Fulham, personally for me, was tough,” said Dom.
“I got there in the international break and had a
good couple of weeks of training, put me in the
team and played one game. Bearing in mind in
pre-season I’d barely played games because I
was injured, after that I was just chasing it and
chasing it to get into the team.
19
“So, it was just a tough time for me, personally, but
it also made me mentally stronger and helped me
to work even harder. It didn’t happen for me, so I
just said – even though they’re probably going to
win the Championship, which is good for the club
and players – I wanted to be somewhere where
I’m contributing to the team or doing something,
and I wasn’t getting that there.”
Now, after joining the Reds on deadline day, this
is an opportunity for regular first team football
and he is aiming to not only demonstrate his
own capabilities, but also help keep us in the
Championship.
there earlier because the football compared
to England is different – it’s not so physical,”
reasoned Dom.
“It suits me better because I’m not a strong guy or
a tall guy, for me it’s all about passing and move
football, tactics and details.
“For me, it was a really enjoyable time out there
and it made me better as a player.
ISSUE SIXTEEN | BARNSLEY VS QUEENS PARK RANGERS
It’s a tough ask, there’s no denying it, given
the current state of the table. Yet, Domingos is
confident, despite suffering defeats in his two
we can avoid the drop.
“In my head, I know I can bring something to the
team, so we just need to know each other to play
as a team and I need to know what everyone can
do,” he concluded.” Once we get there, I think we
can be safe.
“The good thing is that most of the players are all
the same age, so it’s easy to understand each other
and talk to each other, trust each other as well.”
22
oday’s visitors don’t do draws.
Very reminiscent of the Reds under
Valérien Ismaël last term, it’s mainly
a case of winning with the odd defeat
punctuating the schedule.
The London club are in red-hot form coming into
this afternoon’s Sky Bet Championship clash.
Nine victories from their last 13 league fixtures,
the R’s are 4th in the league table, and haven’t
lost on the road since October’s defeat at
Peterborough United.
In recent weeks, they’ve seen off West Bromwich
Albion, Coventry City away from home and
thumped Reading 4-0 on home soil.
Since taking over a former Premier League
club enduring a real slump, back in 2019,
Mark Warburton has slowly but surely lifted
the Hoops back into the role of promotion
contenders. Steady improvements, year on year,
and helped by the backing of the club’s owners,
you’d be hard pressed not to fancy QPR to
regain their top-flight status come May.
Strangely, and even though it’s months ago
now, that first half Reds display at Loftus Road
remains one of the brief highlights of our own
campaign. Going into a 2-0 half-time lead
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
where we were cursing further chances spurned,
only to surrender what looked a surefire three
points, drawing 2-2 back in August.
Last season in this fixture the Reds brushed
aside a Rangers outfit reduced to 10-men in the
first half. The game - Ismaël’s first in charge -
saw us victorious, 3-0, but it should really have
been double that, such was the dominance.
We completed a league double with a 3-1 win at
Loftus Road later in the season.
A fixture that once was deemed one of ‘doom’
has been bright for Barnsley in recent seasons
and it needs to be a similarly pleasing outcome
this afternoon if our status as a Championship
club is to remain possible.
The Rs Manager
MARK WARBURTON
ark Warburton was appointed manager of QPR back in
the summer of 2019. Previous to this he had managed at
Nottingham Forest, Glasgow Rangers and most notably
Brentford.
It was with the Bees that Warburton first entered football management,
back in 2013. He would go on to enjoy immediate success as he led the
club back to the second tier of English football for the first time since 1993 as
they finished as runners-up in Sky Bet League One at the end of the 2013/14
campaign.
He’d initially arrived at Griffin Park in February of 2011 as Interim First Team
Coach, working alongside Nicky Forster following the departure of Andy
Scott.
He was later appointed as Sporting Director in the summer of 2011 and took
overall responsibility for the football side of the club.
25
Working alongside Uwe Rösler, Mark helped build a first team squad that
finished third in League One in the 2012/13 season and then lost the League
One PlayOff Final.
Mark also oversaw the opening of a new Category Two Football Academy
and built a support team of medical, analysis, conditioning and kit
management staff.
He was appointed Glasgow Rangers boss in the summer of 2015 and in his
first season at Ibrox he guided the Gers to the Scottish Championship title,
earning them promotion back to the top flight and also lifted the Scottish
Challenge Cup for a double-winning debut campaign at the helm.
In March of 2017, Warburton took over at Nottingham Forest but his stay
was short-lived, dismissed on New Year’s Eve with Forest sat 14th in the
Championship table.
He led the R’s to a 13th place finish in his first season at the helm, at the end
of the COVID-affected 2019/20 campaign. Last term saw a small jump to
9th by the end of that particular season, and with the Hoops now sitting
inside the play-offs, Warburton has certainly made his mark over the last
three years at Loftus Road.
But can he take them back to the top flight?
OPPOSITION CORNER
by Matt Whiley
Clive Whittingham is now into his fourth decade supporting QPR, having held a season ticket since
1992/93. In addition to attending every match home and away, he can also be found at the Hoops
website Loft For Words. We spoke to him to get the lowdown on our opponents this afternoon.
How did you first get into following QPR?
I actually didn’t initially like football at all as a
child, and got teased at school by the little Man
Utd glory hunters who did. QPR, my dad’s team,
then beat Man Utd 4-1 very famously on New
Year’s Day 1992 so I waited up for him to get
home from the game and tell me all about it.
Three days later I was off to my first game, a 2-0
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
FA Cup loss at Southampton, where I was bored
and cold, and I’ve been bored and cold at every
QPR game ever since. I lost my dad in 1999 so
it’s been a great comfort and way of keeping a
connection, to keep following the club.
What have you made of the season so far?
Very pleased with how it’s gone so far. We
ISSUE SIXTEEN | BARNSLEY VS QUEENS PARK RANGERS

in the summer. We got Charlie Austin, Sam
Field, Jordy De Wijs and Stefan Johansen,
who’d all played well on loan last season, in on
permanent deals. We also added Jimmy Dunne,
Andre Gray, Andre Dozzell and Sam McCallum.
This is way more business than any of us
expected, won’t have come cheap, and has
given us a great team with a puncher’s chance
of winning promotion – Dunne, in particular, has
been exceptional.
The club still, in its pared down state, loses £1.6m
a month or thereabouts, so its budget, and the
P&S rules of the league, meant January was
never going to be a big one for us. We needed
a new goalkeeper as we lost Seny Dieng to
AFCON and Jordan Archer to injury, David
Marshall has been impressive so far.
We brought in Dion Sanderson to cover our
three centre backs, who between them are
clocking up amazing minutes (at the time of
writing Yoann Barbet hasn’t missed a single
second of 90+ consecutive league games, and
Rob Dickie isn’t far behind on 67). And Jeff
Hendrick, just for fun.
Who would you say have been the best firstteam
performers this season?
We’ve been very consistent for more than 12
months now, players like Stefan Johansen,
Ilias Chair, Rob Dickie, Lee Wallace playing big
minutes, producing at a consistently high level. I
suspect if you held the POTY vote now it would
be a shoot-out between Jimmy Dunne, Yoann
Barbet and Chris Willock with an honourable
mention for crowd favourite Albert Adomah.
27
Are there any highly-rated young players
worth watching out for?
finished last season very strongly with 15 wins
from the final 23 games, only the promoted
top two did better, and we backed that up
with a strong summer of recruitment, including
securing all four loans who’d helped lead the
turnaround in 2020/21.
So, expectations were high at the start, but
you’ve still got to remember that the days of
moneybags QPR splashing cash, big transfer
fees, silly wages, are long gone. We’re on a
budget dwarfed by most of the other clubs
up there with us at the moment, so it’s a great
achievement.
What are your thoughts on January’s latest
transfer business?
The vast majority of our business was done
ISSUE SIXTEEN | BARNSLEY VS QUEENS PARK RANGERS
I think Chris Willock is one of the best young
players in the division, never mind just our team.
There aren’t (m)any teenagers battering the
door down, but we’re developing a nice line in
picking up cast offs from the Premier League
puppy farms and actually playing them in some
actual football matches which, wouldn’t you just
know it, is yielding positive results.
What's the target for this QPR squad in your
eyes, come the end of the season?
I suspect most QPR fans would say now, given
the position we’re in, we’ve got to aim for
promotion. We’ve got a great chance. For me,
obviously that would be great, and the money
would be transformative now the club is run
by people who would know what to do with
it, but if we can continue the trend of the last
three seasons by finishing higher, playing better,
picking up more points, winning more games,
then I’ll see that as a success.
Division (South) title triumph and FA Cup run.
He was a centre-forward with Maltby Colliery,
Leeds United, Huddersfield, Birmingham and
West Ham prior to joining Millwall in July 1936,
Orient, Brighton and Crystal Palace, becoming
Chelsea's coach in February 1962. He managed
Orient, then coached Fulham and Arsenal
before rejoining Chelsea as manager in October
1967. Plotting FA Cup and ECWC success, he
in July 1977 to manage Manchester United.
He then had spells in charge of Coventry and
England U-21's. Later coaching QPR and Aston
Parmesan – something a bit simple and strong.
is for Dessert. What’s
D your choice of sweet?
I’m not really a dessert person – I’d rather have a
starter than a dessert. If I’m
having a dessert, I’ll go for a
waffle.
is for Eat. What’s your
E favourite meal?
That’s tough. I go through stages of pasta and
steak. You know what, I’ll go for your classic roast
dinner with thick gravy and proper roasties. A
good roast dinner.
F
is for Five. What is your all-time
five-a-side team?
Am I in it? I’m chucking myself in that. In goal, I’ll go
with Neuer – just a big guy who can lie down and
fill the whole goal. Me and Dani Alves can be
silky at the back. We’ll have Gerrard work
horsing in the middle and Ronaldinho
up top. That’ll be fun.
Gis for Guests. Which three people would
you invite to a dinner party?
Dan Bilzerian – he’s a professional poker player
and he’s so rich. Go on his Insta, it’s so funny. I’d
probably get him just for the stories. Steven Gerrard
– I just love him; I think he’s class and he’s my idol
from very young. Justin Bieber can come to my
dinner party – what a legend.
His for Hero. What would your
superhero power be?
Invisibility just beats everything. You can fly,
but people can see you, so what’s the point in
flying? It just draws attention. Invisible? Done.
Iis for Island. What three items would you
want on a desert island?
Can you just bring a boat? There you go. A
boat, straight off the island. Bish, bash, bosh
– you don’t need the other two. A map and a
compass, there you go.
Jis for Joke. Tell us one.
What’s red and goes up and
down? A tomato in a lift.
is for Karaoke. What’s your
K go-to song?
I’ll go for Billionaire by Bruno Mars.
is for Literature. What was
L the last book you read?
I’m reading, at the moment,
Peter Crouch’s autobiography.
is for Music. Who’s your
M favourite artist?
That’s impossible. Honestly, if you go on my
playlist it can vary from Fallout Boy to
Drake, to then Christina Aguilera. Justin
Bieber is on there, Adele. That’s tough.
I’ll say JB.
is for Nickname.
N What do your friends call you?
I don’t really have a nickname to be honest. Cal
or Britts. I get called annoying quite a lot.
is for Opposition. Who is the best you’ve
O played against?
That’s hard. I feel like I’ve played against a few good
players. I’ve played against Liverpool, Chelsea,
Arsenal. Do you know what, it’s boring because I’ve
played against those teams but, because I’ve played
against him, and because he’s played the amount of
games he has at a high level, I’m going to go James
Milner. When I played against him, he was playing
left midfield and he’s not even a left midfielder, and
he was just a pure workhorse and did everything
well – I don’t remember him doing anything that
wasn’t good. So, I’m going James Milner.
is for Profession. If you weren’t a
P footballer, what would you do?
At school, I used to like doing all the graphic
design stuff, but that’s too hard – I probably
wouldn’t do it. I used to like doing the drawings,
but then the paperwork wasn’t for me. I’d
probably give it a go with Twitch or something,
play games for a living. I’m alright, but if you
practice enough, surely you get better.
is for Quarantine. Did you do anything
Q new in lockdown?
I was a bit of a slob for the very first lockdown for
the first month or two, then I just got absolutely
ripped. I didn’t really necessarily do anything new,
but I go into a good workout and was doing cross
training a bit. So, I didn’t really do anything new,
other than watch a lot of films.
is for Retirement. What do you see
R yourself doing after playing?
I want to work – even if I made a load of money, I’d
want to work. I think I’d make a good coach, but
I don’t really like the idea of being a coach. I like
animals – I like dogs – when I was younger, I always
wanted to work in a zoo, so maybe I’d go down
that route. Or maybe little training camps back
home for kids. Something with animals or kids.
is for Sport. What’s your
S favourite outside of football?
Golf. I’ve played a lot of golf in the last year, so it’d
be golf or tennis.
is for Travel? What’s your ideal holiday
T destination?
My missus loves the beach, so it’s normally the
beach because I get bullied into a beach holiday,
but I like doing stuff. So, a bit of both – somewhere
on the coast but where there’s a lot of stuff to
do. I’ll have to say beach though because that’s
where I go the most, because I get bullied.
is for Unlimited. If you could have
U endless something, what would it be?
Happiness.
is for Vehicle. What is your dream car?
V Lamborghini Urus, at the moment. That is
unreal – I love it. I like a bigger sports car, not the
slimline one.
is for Watch. Can you recommend a film
W or tv series?
I’m bad for series; I watch two or three episodes and
forget about it then don’t go back. I like Focus with
Will Smith in it. That’s a good film – give it a watch.
is for X-Ray. Have you ever broken a bone?
XIs there any wood in here? No.
is for You. Describe yourself
Y in three words.
Energetic, moany and funny.
is for Zombie. What would you do in the
Z event of a zombie apocalypse?
That’s a weird question – I was actually talking
about zombies earlier! I used to love playing Call
of Duty: Zombies; it was class. I used to love all the
old school Call of Duty maps – I played it for hours!
Do I have endless resources? I’d just make my own
barricade with holes in and just pop them off as
they come. I’d have a bit of fun with it; I wouldn’t
be one of them who just crawls into a cupboard.
With endless resources, I’d give it a right go.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME

42
ur next academy starlet to feature
under the spotlight is Theo Chapman,
who has had to bide his time and be
patient for regular action in the under
18s this term.
However, in recent weeks, the skilful midfielder
has caught the eye and contributed to our
youngsters’ impressive results – most notably in
the 5-0 demolition at Coventry City a fortnight
ago.
The 16-year-old was on the score sheet
that afternoon, netting the fourth goal of a
comprehensive victory and celebrated in style
with an acrobatic flip owing to his upbringing as
a talented gymnast.
“That helps a lot with my football in terms of
my athleticism, my spring etcetera,” insisted
Theo in the North Stand classroom. “So, I did my
celebration like that the other day.
“I was in more of a tumbling element. Basically,
there was a 20-metre track, and you just do
skills down the track – I didn’t do the bars and
stuff like that.”
Timing his runs into the box is a major part of
Theo’s game – something he has made a habit
of progressing through the age groups since
arriving at the Reds academy back in 2013.
Nine years on, he is mastering his craft and
reaping the rewards with an expert finish
against the Sky Blues that crashed in off the
underside of the crossbar.
“I’d say that I’m quite a creative midfielder or
attacking midfielder,” discussed Chappers, as he
is known by his teammates and the coaching
staff at Oakwell. “I like to play on the left and
come in on my right foot. I just like linking up,
scoring goals and helping my team get the win.
“I got in the right area at Coventry – I’m used to
doing that, especially from the under 16s – and I
just had composure to finish it.”
The goals are flying in for our U18s at the
moment, with 18 plundered in their last four
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
outings – including 10 in two games against
Crewe Alexandra, who also netted seven in
those entertaining encounters.
In a topsy-turvy clash with the Railwaymen
last weekend, Barnsley led four times before
falling behind in the last minute, only for Charlie
Hickingbottom to snatch a more than deserved
share of the spoils from a match our young Reds
largely dominated.
Theo admits it was disappointing to come away
with only a point from that game, but it all adds
to the tally as Tom Harban’s side look to end the
season on a high and secure a top two finish.
“It was a tough game to play in – it was quite
end to end,” reflected the midfielder. “We had
quite a lot of chances and should have scored a
lot more than what we actually did.
“I’d say we’re disappointed to come away with
the draw because we’ve been winning a lot of
games this season and we wanted to keep that
streak going. We’ll always take a point though;
it’s better than a loss.
“We’ve got that quality of players just to keep
the goals coming. We’ve got Lloyd, Fabio,
Keegan and me as well who are scoring goals.
With Ben and Hayden providing assists from
wing-back, it’s a good group.”
Our U18s’ next assignment is a trip to
Charlton Athletic in the PDL Cup quarter finals
next weekend, in what is set to be a stern
examination against the south league leaders.
The Addicks are the Professional Development
League top scorers, with 52 in 14 games, while
young striker Daniel Kanu has netted 26 goals in
all competitions for Hamza Serrar’s side.
Their only league defeat was on the opening
day at Peterborough United, and they have also
progressed to the fifth round of the FA Youth
Cup.
However, despite all the daunting statistics,
Theo is confident that he and his teammates
can travel to south London and progress to the
ISSUE SIXTEEN | BARNSLEY VS QUEENS PARK RANGERS

final four – and provide a timely morale boost in
their bid to reach the play-offs.
“Charlton have always been a good side, so it’s
going to be a tough game but, hopefully with
our qualities, we can turn them over,” he said.
“We’ve got a good group of players who are all
bettering each other, so you’d expect us to be
up there in the top half of the table.
“We can definitely push for the play-offs – we’ve
got good characters, so getting the play-offs is
a possibility.”
It’s not just football and gymnastics where our
fledgling midfielder has flourished, though. There’s
much more to young Theo than meets the eye.
Some of you may recognise him from JD Sports
commercials through his modelling career that
he started a few years ago, although he has put
that to one side for the time being to focus solely
on his efforts with Barnsley.
43
“I applied through agencies,” revealed Theo. “It’s
something else to do and, especially being in
front of cameras and being in football, it helps
quite a lot.
“I was around 12 or 13, then carried it on until I
was 15, but football got more serious and I was
getting into my scholarship time, so I had to
stop it.
“I did a bit of a modelling and acting shoot with
Hugo Boss for the World Cup in 2018, not really
much other than that. JD is with Tessuti as well,
so I did them two.
“If things pop up, maybe I might have a look at
it again – especially after football – but I’m just
focussed on football now.”
The main question we want to know, however,
are there any discounts for this merchandise?
“I don’t get discounts, to be fair, but I got a bit of
money for it.”
Worth a try…
ome might call it a modern
injustice, others see the unsung
hero as a typically good old
British way of knuckling down
for the cause without fanfare; something
which seems to be of huge value to our
little island.
Many have been posthumously
recognised for their contributions, albeit
too late in some people’s eyes.
Alan Turing, the man credited with
breaking the enigma code in WWII and
ultimately turning the tide in the favour of
the allies. Never recognised when he was
alive due to the classified nature of his
work, disgraced due to archaic laws, the
Queen officially recognised him in 2013,
some 61 years after he died.
Peter Taylor, Brian Clough’s not-so
famous assistant who is generally
considered to be the man that looked
after the football while Cloughie did
the man management. With league
championships, league cups and
European cups on his CV, he will always
be recognised as a number 2.
Murdoch from the A-Team, Howling Mad
as he was known, they had to break him
out of the veteran’s hospital every time
someone found them when no one else
could help. We all wanted to be BA, we
wanted to drive Face Man’s Corvette and
make a plan like Hannibal, but without a
spiked glass of milk and Murdoch’s skills
as a pilot, they’d have not got anywhere
fast.
And so that brings me to……….
UNSUNG
HEROES
Neil Richardson
MARLEY WATKINS (BABY).
Arguably, this particular signing was the best of
what the ‘spreadsheet’, developed by the late
Patrick Cryne would deliver. Yes, Conor Hourihane
was great, but he was playing in League Two at
the time that we signed him. Marley was way
down in the Conference plying his trade with
Hereford united at 23 years of age, where they
were in absolute turmoil off the pitch and getting
crowds of just 200 spectators per game, and then
had a semi-decent stint with Inverness.
Like a lot of players in the 2015/16 season, it took
a while to get going. We were rock bottom before
Christmas and facing calls for major changes.
Then something clicked. The arrival of a couple of
players, one of them a free agent named Adam
Hammill (have you heard of him?) gave the whole
team a confidence boost. Young Robbo and Alfie
Mawson developed a formidable partnership at
the back, all giving Marley the perfect opportunity
to be a 10 to Winnall’s 9…and oh how it worked a
treat. The goals were flying in left right and centre
in the second half of the season. The arrival of Ash
Fletcher meant Watkins could move out onto the
right wing and even though he was out for a few
weeks through injury, his contribution couldn’t be
underestimated that year.
As is the case when you’re playing well and in
a side on the up, bigger clubs inevitably come
knocking and this was no different. Marley gained
a move to Norwich at the end of his contract,
earned in no small part thanks to his commitment
and work ethic.
Sadly he doesn’t seem to have found a home
anywhere like he had at Oakwell, but isn’t that
often the case with many players? But nevertheless,
he will always be fondly remembered for being an
intrinsic part of an unforgettable season.
e’ve had a few games since I last wrote
to you, and I must say that I think the
Reds have lacked an awful lot of luck in
those matches.
I don’t want to look for excuses, but the standard
of refereeing at the moment is so poor. These
decisions cost you points, momentum and
confidence. If Aaron Leya Iseka’s goal stands
against Cardiff City last time we were here, it
gives us a huge morale boost knowing we got
the least we deserved from that game.
The same with the lad Michał Helik at
Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup last weekend.
It shows our fighting spirit, and we haven’t been
rewarded for our efforts, unfortunately.
However, what I can say is that there have been
positives to take from the latest performances,
even though results aren’t going our way just
yet – but it’s important that we all remain upbeat
because it’s not over yet. Far from it.
50
I thought we played very well in the first half at
Luton Town on Tuesday evening, and we should
have been ahead early on if we’d taken a couple
of good opportunities that came our way, but
it just looked as though we lacked a little bit of
confidence in the final third.
All except for Carlton Morris. That lad is a natural
finisher, and he took his goal excellently. That
is one of those chances where it’s easy to fluff
your lines because there’s so much time to think
about where you want to put the ball, but he
let the ‘keeper make the first move and took it
fantastically well.
And, I’ve got to say, the new signings Amine
Bassi and Domingos Quina look like they’re
going to be great additions to this team with the
movement and creativity they provide in behind
the striker.
They were both brilliant at Kenilworth Road – as
was the lad Callum Styles – and I think once they
all develop an understanding, we’ll see good
things from them.
A special mention to the 300 supporters who
made the 250-mile round trip to Luton to cheer
the Reds on. Times are hard, at the moment,
with the cost of living rising and, of course, things
aren’t going too well on the pitch either.
I’m pleased to hear that dedication and effort
was rewarded by both clubs supplying a free
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
drink to each travelling fan. It’s a really nice
and classy touch, and those who put it in place
should be applauded.
Onto this afternoon’s game, and it’s another
tough one against Queens Park Rangers, who
are in good form. In fact, they haven’t lost a
league game this year, so we know the size of
the challenge we’re going to face.
I watched a bit of the game on Wednesday night
when they drew with Middlesbrough, and they’re
another team that will play for set-pieces to
utilise their aerial strengths, so the Reds will need
to be wary of that particular threat.
There are 17 matches remaining, and anything
can happen in this funny old game. Don’t write
us off yet.
I hope you enjoy this one today, let’s hope we
can get a result and, you never know, our luck
might just change.
e’re big foodies here at Grove Street –
especially when it comes to anything
sweet. It’s a wonder why we’ve left
it this long to venture to a dessert
specialist, but the wait is over.
You may remember from our Swansea City
edition that we visited Market Kitchen for the
first time, with the wonderful array of eateries
dotted around the upper section of the Glass
Works.
Situated up there is the delightful Dolly’s
Desserts, who sate your cravings with a variety
of sweet treats from ice creams to waffles,
cheesecakes to brownies.
Just looking through the glass display case at
the front of the shop is enough to make your
mouth water, and it takes a lot of self-control
not to channel your inner Harry Potter with his
pocket full of Galleons (“We’ll take the lot!”).
Sorry.
Helping to serve up these delicious offerings is
Charlie, so we spoke to her to get a low down
on all the goings on behind the counter.
“We do waffles, crepes, cookie dough – we make
all of our ice cream ourselves, all of our own
brownies, cheesecakes, and the waffle and crepe
mixes are all freshly made here with produce
from the market and local dairies,” she explained.
“We move in in October 2019, but then we pretty
much went into lockdown after that. That’s
when we started doing our website, so we sell
cookie dough kits online for people to make
their own cookie dough at home.
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
ISSUE SIXTEEN | BARNSLEY VS QUEENS PARK RANGERS

“We had a bit of time at the beginning of lockdown
where we had to send stuff out, but as it started
relaxing, we started sending cookie doughs out
to people, and that was that. We sent kits out so
people could make Dolly’s at home instead.
“As we reopened, we got more of a social media
following and then it kind of went from there.
Now, we’re getting very busy here, which is why
we’re opening another shop.”
That’s right. Another Dolly’s Dessert opening in
the Glass Works in the near future, and it’ll be
near the new Cineworld, so you can load up on
a yummy treat before you head into the flicks.
Not only are the parlour thriving in person,
but they’ve racked up an incredible social
media following, too, with an avid audience on
Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.
“We’ve been doing really well on social media;
we’ve been getting lots of attention through that –
we’ve got nearly one million followers on TikTok!”
beamed Charlie.
“The videos we put on are of us making the ice
creams, our day-to-day life, making customer
orders, decorating desserts – just everything about
it. People love to see it.”
Of course, everyone is partial to their own
favourite dessert (this particular Grove Street
what the best seller was at Dolly’s.
“Anything with Kinder Bueno on!” was the reply.
REDS IN THE COMMUNITY
PAUL FRANCE
56
I was born and grew up in Huddersfield and
like many young boys I wanted to become a
professional footballer. I was fortunate enough
to do that, doing two years as an apprentice and
then two years as a professional with Huddersfield
Town. I then had a year at Bristol City, two seasons
with Burnley but by the age of 23 I had realised I
wasn’t good enough really, not to play at that kind
of level, and so I dropped into non-league football.
But football was my passion and I didn’t want to
leave it, so I took my coaching badges and also
went to University and whilst playing in non-league
I went to work at Leeds United in their football in
the community programme. And within a couple
of years, Huddersfield approached me and asked
if I’d go back there and head up their community
programme. I did that for 19 years.
I went back to Burnley and spent five years
as deputy chief executive of Burnley FC in the
community. I think that was the best example I can
think of how football in the community can work
closely together with the club to help, improve and
change people’s lives. It’s about working together,
collaborating with local authorities and really
engaging with the local community.
That’s the experience that I’m bringing to Reds in the
Community, and initially I’ve sought to strengthen
those links between RITC and the Club, working
shoulder to shoulder with Khaled El-Ahmad. I’ve
looked to work closely with the marketing and
communications team here, and to really embed
Reds in the Community into the Club.
I want to make sure that we work collaboratively
with key stakeholders across the town. But again,
with the main focus of making a difference. Can
we change people’s lives, improve people’s lives?
That’s the aim for myself and for RITC. Not delivering
projects for the sake of it, but providing real, tangible
projects that make a difference.
I know how important football clubs can be within
their communities. And with that comes a big
GROVE STREET | BARNSLEY FC OFFICIAL PROGRAMME
ISSUE SIXTEEN | BARNSLEY VS QUEENS PARK RANGERS

esponsibility to use that power as a force for good.
We have the ability to engage with certain groups,
certain people that no other organisations can.
And so I’m looking to reach those people, to create
impactful projects that reach the people in greatest
need. Whether that’s through youth employability
programmes, such as those who’ve perhaps been
unable to flourish in a classroom environment and
would like to progress their careers through football.
That’s something I’m going to be looking to introduce.
Mental health is another big one. It’s a big issue, not
just here in Barnsley but nationally and I think we
certainly have a role to play in engaging with young
people in particular and getting them involved in
therapeutic sessions that we can deliver. It’s about
using the brand of the football club to initiate these
conversations and get people to open up and start
talking about how they feel.
The food bank is also very relevant. There’s so much
going on right now, with the rise in energy and
fuel prices, the cost of living and there are so many
families who are right on that threshold of falling
into poverty. So we are trying to show that we can
help tackle that issue. We care about our club and
our community, and it’s about being consistent in
everything that we do really.
And the main thing I want to ensure, is that the
people of Barnsley and the supporters of our club
are really proud of what the club does within its
community. For a lot of people - and I do understand
this - it’s all about the result on the pitch. I get that.
But I’d like to try and change people’s mentalities
a little so that they see Barnsley Football Club as
a six, seven days a week organisation that is out
there doing good for its town and its people, its
community.
We want to make people proud.
In my first couple of months here I’ve been keen to
get out there and meet the key stakeholders in the
town, such as the council and public health, and
tell them a little bit about myself and what I’d like
to try and implement here within the community
of Barnsley. It’s about finding out what keeps these
people awake at night, and where can we help, how
can we work together for the greater good.
I have been warmly welcomed everywhere I’ve
been so far, it’s been a really positive start and I can
definitely sense that shared desire to come together
and meet the needs of people in Barnsley. That goes
for everyone in the Club also. Not just Khaled, but all
of the staff here have made me feel very welcome
and I feel like I’ve been here a lot longer than two
months. Which is a good sign, because I feel part of
the Club already.
I look forward to meeting more supporters over the
coming months and thank you all for your support of
Reds in the Community.
Enjoy the game,
