North Midlands Area minis girls blitz a huge success It all started with a conversation between Cill Dara Minis Coordinator Barry Kilgallen and his North Kildare counterpart Jerry Bradley. Both clubs were struggling to get regular games for their minis girls teams and Barry suggested that a blitz involving all teams from the North Midlands Area might be a good idea. The Minis Co-ordinators in the area enjoy a really good working relationship and regularly share ideas and experiences, not just when they meet in person and blitzes but also on their WhatsApp group which CRO Joe Carbery set up some time ago. As soon as Barry mentioned his idea in the group it was greeted with huge enthusiasm and when the Minis Coordinators went back to the coaches of their girls teams, that enthusiasm was echoed and amplified. “Just tell us when and where” was the response that came from coaches and parents. Barry volunteered to host the blitz in Cill Dara RFC and it was agreed to run it under lights on a Friday night to avoid a clash with regular minis activities. The invitation was also extended to Tullow RFC as Barry was aware that they were also struggling to get games for their girls and the invitation was gratefully accepted. On Friday night last, excited U-10 and U-12 girls from Athy, Blessington, Cill Dara, Clane, Naas, Newbridge, North Kildare, Portarlington, Portlaoise and Tullow arrived in huge numbers and were greeted by members of the current Leinster U-18 Girls squad who were all 70 | www.leinsterrugby.ie

eally impressed with the numbers in attendance. Alana Fitzpatrick, Éadaoin Murtagh and Hannah Wilson took time to speak to the girls and have their photos taken with them before the blitz started. Almost 200 girls played a series of short games and the standard of play was really outstanding and a testament to the great work being done in the North Midlands clubs to develop the skill levels and the levels of participation. As everyone was leaving Cill Dara the only question being asked was: “When will the next one be?” No doubt the North Midlands Minis Co-ordinators won’t be long in scheduling the next one. www.leinsterrugby.ie | 71
