Surprise visitor to Seapoint RC inspires next generation A cold Wednesday evening training session for the U-13 squad in south Dublin’s Seapoint RC took a sunny turn as New Zealand rugby legend Sonny Bill Williams showed up to offer some coaching advice and share his expertise with the lads last month. The two-time Rugby World Cup winner turned boxer, currently in Ireland, where he is in training, decided to drop down to the club to meet the young players and their coaches. Commenting on the appearance of the All Blacks legend, Club President Mick O’Toole says: “We were so honoured that Sonny Bill dropped in to see us here in Seapoint. I don’t think he could believe the reception he got with everyone looking for photos and a handshake but Sonny Bill couldn’t have been more gracious and was hugely generous with his time, staying for the entire session with our U-13s squad.” The club took to social media to share the news, and photographs from Williams’ appearance, garnering huge interest and support from far and wide. U-13 coach, Graham Byrne, added, “The lads were absolutely thrilled to meet a rugby legend of the calibre of Sonny Bill Williams. He’s such a fantastic role model for them, offering them some super advice namely that having fun and enjoying the game is the most important thing. We wholeheartedly agree here in Seapoint as our motto is ‘Fun, Fitness and Friendship’.” Many of the parents, who were having a coffee in the clubhouse on the evening, said they were delighted for the players and were sure it would be a January evening they will never forget in their beloved club. The annual Seapoint RC Blitz, the largest event of its kind in Ireland, takes place on Sunday, April 24, in Kilbogget Park, Cabinteely, Co Dublin where it is expected that over 30 clubs, 100 teams and over 1,600 players at U-10, U-11 and U-12 level will take part in over 400 matches for a day of rucking, passing and tackling.
