180 Chapter 6 The Director

22. Scenic Assembly. Now in the Randall Theatre, where the play will be presented,

the scenery is being erected and assembled on the actual stage. © Robert Cohen

23. Scenic Detailing. Scene Designer Winiarski demonstrates to

Scenery Supervisor Zimmer precisely how she intends the

window hinges to be fitted. © Robert Cohen

24. Scenic Revision. An early version of a stage prop—a portable desk that is

to be carried and used by the “Notary”—is tested in rehearsal and found

to be too bulky; it must be redesigned immediately. Since Scene Designer

Winiarski is completing a project in New York that week, the redesign—as

a simpler lap desk—is accomplished through a series of overnight e-mail

exchanges. In Cedar City the next morning, Director Cohen approves—and

sends to the prop shop—the new version. © Robert Cohen

25. Props. In the prop shop, the redesigned lap desk is sanded by

Properties Construction Artisan Ryan McAlpine. © Robert Cohen

26. Photo Call. Neither scenery nor costumes are fully

finished, nor have all the lighting instruments been

installed, but selected pieces have been completed and

temporary lighting has been set up so key scenes from

the play may be photographed for the souvenir program

and upcoming publicity releases. Publications Art

Director Phil Hermansen frames a shot that will include

Arnolphe and his two servants in front of the house

where Agnès is lodged. © Robert Cohen
