Simon Dorrell was born into a farming family from Bewdley in Worcestershire in 1961.
He attended Hereford College of Art, later graduating from Maidstone College of Art in 1984.
He first exhibited in London in 1982 and since then has staged one-man exhibitions in New York, Zurich, London and the
provinces. He exhibited, annually, at The Silk Top Hat Gallery in Ludlow from 1986 until 2016, and at Glyndebourne Opera,
annually, from 1998 - 2019, showing alongside David Hockney and Mary Fedden.
He exhibits regularly at The Table, Hay-on-Wye, and occasionally at Oriel Canfas, Cardigan. He is a member of The
Arborealists.
Also a designer of buildings, gardens and landscapes, the garden at Simon’s former home, Bryan’s Ground, near
Presteigne, was listed as one of the ten best contemporary gardens in Britain.
Since 1988 he has been art editor and principal illustrator of the international garden journal, Hortus (www.hortus.co.uk).
He now lives in the Towy Valley in Carmarthenshire.
A lifelong interest in the domestic vernacular architecture of the farm is reflected in Simon’s recent work, principally
stemming from his familial ties to those who work on the land. Many of the paintings are unashamedly nostalgic in their
depiction, either of the solid, fortress-like farmsteads that have survived to this day in the Welsh countryside, or of the
terraced housing (much of it no longer standing) of the South Wales valleys. Likewise, Llansaint, a village poised high on
its hill overlooking Carmarthen Bay, has inspired work that speaks of a certain aloofness; seemingly at one remove from
the demands of the modern world. Where one can find the time to converse with a stray dog, or a donkey, to listen to the
wind in the trees, and to watch the clouds tumble out of the western skies. Straightforward testaments to a more
considered, and more considerate, way of life.
