Every corner is acompelling photo opportunity,especially in the gleaminghistoric wing and all-white innercourtyard,” the Forbes TravelGuide noted in its inspector’shighlights.Forbes Travel Guide, establishedin 1958 (then called “Mobil TravelGuide”), is the oldest travel guidein the United States, and is thecreator of the original Five-Starrating system for hotels. Theguide’s ratings are among themost highly respected in thehotel industry.While the Metropole’s luxuriousaccommodation and historicfacilities earned substantial praisein the guide, the ratings place aneven greater emphasis on service,meaning that the Metropoledistinguished itself primarilythrough its warm, personalisedand attentive service both in thehotel and in its award-winningrestaurants and spa.“All of us here at the Metropoleunderstand that we’re thecaretakers of an incrediblehistorical hotel, and that theservice we provide must not onlybe commensurate with the legacyof this Grand Dame but must inmany ways exceed expectations,”said General Manager WilliamHaandrikman. “This Five-Starrating from Forbes affirms thatour team here is doing exactlythat.”The Metropole Hanoi’s richhistory, including its Path ofHistory (and wartime bunker)tour, also came in for praisefrom Forbes Travel Guide, whileafternoon tea at Le Club Bar,coffee at La Terrasse and cocktailsat Bamboo Bar were described asexperiences that have evolvedinto “must-do Hanoi traditions.”Moreover, Le Spa du Metropole“is a sublime urban retreat…ensconced in what feels morelike an elegant residence than awellness center,” the inspector’sreview added.Forbes Travel Guide’s Five-Starrating is meant to designate“outstanding, often iconicproperties with virtually flawlessservice and amazing facilities.”In Vietnam, two hotels haveachieved Five-Star ratings andthree have earned Four-Starratings.In order to complete theirevaluations, inspectors pay theirown way and stay anonymouslyas typical guests for at least twonights. Forbes Travel Guide billsitself as the only independent,global rating agency for luxuryhospitality, and says that only 20percent of all hotels it rates earna Five-Star rating.
