It took me close tonine years moving between thesepositions until 2009, when I finallylanded at W Bali Seminyak andworked in the Rooms Department, the department I thought I wouldhave the least interest in. After afew months I realised I enjoyed it. AnInternational chain, such as MarriottInternational, helps me build mycareer path, so I challenged myselfto move forward, leading to my currentposition.2.What challenges dowomen face and how do youovercome them?Lily: Some women believe weoverthink or lack confidence whendoing things for the first time.Fortunately, I have many people inmy life supporting my career. Mycontinent leader keeps asking meto move to the next level. My GMencourages and motivates me as hebelieves I can be a good GM. Finally,I decided to take the challenge andto “just do it”.Beatrice: Women face a numberof challenges at work: harassment, discrimination, stereotyping fromguests, and even their own colleagues. And for those with a family, working long hours and levels ofmobility are a real challenge. Luckily,I haven’t faced these situations sinceI joined the Marriott family, and I’mso grateful for that.Santi: Women leaders areunderestimated, as we are moreknowledgeable, committed andconsistent, than most believe.Sylvia: With gender equality, almost nothing is stopping whatwomen can do.Ristiana: One of the biggestchallenges is society’s expectationsof women that can be particularlyhard for working women, especiallyworking mothers, who are expectedto take on a greater role at homethan their counterparts. As for myself, since I am single andI do not have any family-relatedissues and challenges, I still feelthe need to prove to society thatwomen do not function based onemotion alone.Kristanti: In the hospitalityindustry, female workers are stilloutnumbered.I believe that we need to equip ourselveswith knowledge, stay hungry, and the more we focus on our confidence, living our most authenticselves, the better the world will befor us.3.What motivates you to dowhat you do?Lily: I will only live once, so everythingI do, I will do my best. To strivefor the best and never regret anythingin my life.Beatrice: Always set a goal andbear in mind the 3Cs – Commitment,Courage, and Confidence. This wasbrainwashed into me by my Dadduring childhood. It still works forme. Also, try to see failure as anopportunity for improvement.Santi: My husband and my children- I want them to be proud oftheir wife and mother.Sylvia: My parents - I want tomake my parents proud and happy.Ristiana: I aspire to see moreIndonesian hoteliers with vision, taking on more senior roles.Kristanti: My family has alwaysbelieved in me. To be the best in theindustry and the passion I have formy job.
