The United States Government m<strong>in</strong>ts<br />
co<strong>in</strong>s and medals <strong>in</strong> 6 locations<br />
around the country and is the only<br />
sanctioned <strong>in</strong>stitution to m<strong>in</strong>t official<br />
government co<strong>in</strong>s. The orig<strong>in</strong>al U.S.<br />
M<strong>in</strong>t build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton D.C. was<br />
built <strong>in</strong> late 1800.s but is not used as a<br />
m<strong>in</strong>t today. Commemorative co<strong>in</strong>s<br />
can be obta<strong>in</strong>ed through the U.S. M<strong>in</strong>t<br />
website. Some co<strong>in</strong>s may be available<br />
through the White House Gift Shop,(not<br />
associated with the U.S. Government},<br />
The first commemorative co<strong>in</strong> that was<br />
available to be purchased by the public<br />
was the Peace Co<strong>in</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g WWI.<br />
There have been 156 commemorative<br />
co<strong>in</strong>s issued s<strong>in</strong>ce 1886.<br />

passed as congressional legislation. Next<br />
the M<strong>in</strong>t creates design requirements,<br />

then recommend the design and the<br />
M<strong>in</strong>t and other stakeholders review the<br />

The M<strong>in</strong>t creates a test die and from the<br />
test/ Lastly, the m<strong>in</strong>t strikes a co<strong>in</strong>.<br />
For numismatics who collect co<strong>in</strong>s you<br />
may or may not realize the procedure<br />
that collectible co<strong>in</strong>s are subjected to<br />
before becom<strong>in</strong>g collectible. Co<strong>in</strong>s that<br />
are m<strong>in</strong>ted by the United States M<strong>in</strong>t are<br />
selected by a competitive process. The<br />
procedure for a commemorative co<strong>in</strong><br />

studio is a cubicle with a desk and<br />
draft<strong>in</strong>g table located <strong>in</strong> the same<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g where co<strong>in</strong>s are produced by<br />
the billions each year. He has the title of<br />
an engraver but he does not engrave<br />
on metal. Instead, he works with an<br />
oil-based clay which allows chang<strong>in</strong>g<br />
details over hours of time without dry<strong>in</strong>g<br />
out. He along with other of these<br />
numismatic artists work with 8 <strong>in</strong>ch round<br />
pieces of plastic with the clay <strong>in</strong>side.<br />
His art tools <strong>in</strong>clude dental <strong>in</strong>struments<br />
and other tools to form the design of the<br />
co<strong>in</strong>.<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g the Trump adm<strong>in</strong>istration there<br />
were more elaborate and sh<strong>in</strong>er,<br />
flashier and larger co<strong>in</strong>s than any<br />
previous adm<strong>in</strong>istration. He had his<br />
MAGA campaign slogan put on a<br />
presidential challenge co<strong>in</strong> used as<br />
a token for service members given to<br />
commemorate special achievements.<br />
This MAGA co<strong>in</strong> replaced the traditional<br />
presidential seal and the national motto,<br />
E Pluribus Unum. Trump requested<br />
to not use copper or silver for the<br />
co<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong>stead use gold his preferred<br />
color. As an example of some co<strong>in</strong>s<br />
requested by the Trump adm<strong>in</strong>istration<br />
the co<strong>in</strong> honor<strong>in</strong>g Trump’s task aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />
the Coronavirus, <strong>this</strong> request came<br />
<strong>in</strong> the middle of the <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> the<br />
number of virus victims and <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />
deaths. This co<strong>in</strong> became a topic of<br />
humoroous exageration by several<br />
artists. The artist Valery Estabrook<br />
designed a Coronavirus Task Force<br />
co<strong>in</strong>, us<strong>in</strong>g Trump’s comment “ I don’t<br />
take responsibility at all” regard<strong>in</strong>g his<br />
comments on the spread of the virus.<br />
