Fault Lines by Emily Itami is a brilliant, modern love story. Set in Tokyo, it revolves
around Mizuki, a Japanese housewife, who has a hardworking husband, two
adorable children, a beautiful apartment ... and a crushing sense of loneliness. But
then she falls for Kiyoshi, and it soon becomes clear that she is living two lives – and
that she can choose only one. Phoenix • We’re all about love this month, obvs, and
we adore Mary Berry. And whether you’re looking for a new dish to impress the
book club girls, or simply want something delicious for mid-week dinner, you’ll find
it in Mary Berry Love to Cook, where she shares more than 120 irresistible, no-fuss
recipes that, she hopes ‘will bring happiness into your kitchen. Each beautifully
photographed dish celebrates the delicious ingredients and flavours I love, and
which make cooking at home such a joy’. Penguin Random House
Let’s kick off February Book Club with a Cap Classique with a touch of gold.
Kanu Angelina Gold has 24 carats of edible gold flakes, the first for a sparkling wine in
South Africa. Paying homage to the 50th anniversary of this exceptional wine style in South
Africa, Johan Grimbeek, winemaker and cellar master at Kanu, describes this rich salmon-hued
and gold-flecked wine with a very pale rim as ‘freshing and crisp, displaying red berry fruit,
crunchy red apple and delicate candyfloss flavours. Entry onto the palate is dry with persistent
red fruit, malted barley and wild strawberries, and has an extended finish with a toasty
undertone’. He assures us that extensive research and development has been undertaken
regarding the insertion of gold flakes into wine, and they’re completely edible and harmless.
Another we-love feature is the light-emitting diode (LED) unit in the bottle’s punt which
lights up the gold flakes when switched on. R1200 a bottle, available from kanu.co.za

Our book of the month
If the earth moves this Valentine’s Day, it’s from the little jumps
of joy around the world as Marian Keyes fans discover she’s just
released a new book. And not any book. A Rachel Walsh book.
Oh, joy! 20 years ago we read Rachel’s Holiday ... and way back
then in the nineties, she had a fondness for recreational drugs
and was a hot mess. Now - in Again, Rachel - she’s good. She has
love, a family, a brilliant job as an addiction counsellor. All her bad
habits are behind her ... now all she’s addicted to is expensive
trainers! But when an old love interest reappears in her life, she
hits a wobble. She thought she was fixed. But is all that about
to change? It’s only February, but we’re convinced this is going
to be our book of the year. Oh ... and for those of you who’re all
‘it’s just chick lit’, MK reads are so, so much more. In her books
she touches - with knowledge and empathy and a marvellously
wicked humour – on domestic violence and mental illness, drug
abuse and alcoholism, divorce and family (that Walsh family …
just adore!). She, and her books, are warm, witty, brutally honest.
And jolly great reads! Penguin Random House.
Glamour, gossip & scandal,
Where The Grass Is Green by the fabulous Lauren
Weisberger (author of The Devil Wears Prada) revolves
around Peyton, a high-profile anchor for a morning news
programme, who’s an American darling and can do no wrong.
Until her husband is arrested. The charge?
Admissions fraud ... a payment (read bribe) to get their
daughter into the best college. Off go Peyton and her
daughter to hide out with her sister in the suburbs, hoping
that the scandal will die down. It’s all glamour, and gossip and a
sensationally enjoyable read. Harper Collins
1963. A chateau in Provence. Fresh
from London and a recent cookery
silent, rather hostile children, she
attention, and an English education.
But Alexandra has always loved a
Friends. Food. Flavour. All we need, really.
Michael Olivier says Friends. Food. Flavour. is the culmination
of a long journey. He was invited by the Voyager Wine Estate
in Western Australia to prepare a Cape Buffet for the duration
of the Margaret River November Wine Festival. He, along with
his wife, Madeleine, researched, deconstructed, and rebuilt
the recipes, leaving them with a collection of essentially Cape
dishes, which he wanted to publish. And what a collection
it is. The book, sensationally illustrated by the jolly talented
Roelien Immelman, includes dishes from the Cape Buffet, as
well as additional ones from their restaurants and friends. So
there’s Snoekpatee rubbing shoulders with Oeufs en Meurette,
Pampoenkoekies and Soetpatats alongside a Tuscan Brick
Chicken, Bobetie follows Arroz de Pato Portuguese Duck Rice.
There are recipes from local foodies who we know and love -
Dianne Bibby, Ina Paarman, Sam Linsell. It’s a feast - visually, too ...
too, too delish to resist. Penguin, R400
Cocktails for the season of love. And
the prettiest one imaginable is this.
It uses Japan’s legendary Roku Gin.
For this Blossom Cocktail, you’ll need
50ml Roku Japanese Gin, 25ml each
Triple Sec and fresh lemon juice, 50ml
cranberry juice, tonic and an edible
flower to garnish. To make, add all
ingredients except the flower into a
shaker with ice. Shake well and strain
into a chilled glass with lots of ice.
Garnish with an edible flower. If you
have the time, go the extra mile and
make flower ice cubes. It’s a bit fiddly,
but well worth it. Fill an ice tray with
water, carefully place pretty, edible
flowers into the water and freeze.
fabulous
Age is just a number. Which is a very
easy thing to say when you’re still in
your 30s or entering your 40s. But at
50, society says you are supposed to
slow down as you enter the so-called
middle-age years? Oh, heck no! That
couldn’t be further from the truth. Well,
not for Marna Grobler, business owner,
avid athlete and now also a qualified
health and wellness coach.
“So many women I talk to see turning
50 as an ending. Almost like you’ve
reached your sell-by date. But I believe
50 is just the beginning. Now, after
years of putting family and children
first, it is your time. Time to get your
mojo back! Pursue your passions. You
really don’t have to fit into the mould
of others’ opinions or the fluctuating
standards of society.”
It was during lockdown when Marna
could not work that she decided to
keep her mind busy and generate
some sort of an income by going back
to studying.
“With my teaching background and
love for sport and people, it made
perfect sense to study health and
wellness coaching, combining these
two passions. Since then, I’ve launched
Body in Bloom Health and Wellness
Coaching. We focus on fitness, weight
loss, reducing stress, achieving a better
work-life balance, prioritising self-care
and how to practise a positive mindset.
There are various programs, from a
motivator package to meditation and
even one for menopause.”
That’s not all. Soon after hitting the
half-century mark, Marna launched a
50andMe lifestyle concept website. She
You are never too old to start something new. And
Marna Grobler proves it. When she turned the big
5 - 0, she refused to allow her worth to have a use-by
date. Instead, she reinvented herself, her life and career.
And she is happier than ever.
felt there was a need for a platform
where women could connect, interact,
and find everything they might need
to help them grow older, while feeling
fabulous and not being overwhelmed.
On the site you’ll find health, wellness
and lifestyle articles and tips, shared by
Marna and professionals that are part
of the 50andMe family. And there is no
stopping Marna yet.
“It’s still a fairly new brand ... I have
so many plans that I’m permanently
starry-eyed. There are plans for a FitFlo
Fitness for a cause event, our NPO
that gives back to the community
by means of fitness events. Then
our newly launched Pink Ribbon Ink
campaign that will run throughout the
year, assisting breast cancer survivors.”
In between meeting clients and
bride-to-be appointments, doing
one-on-one fitness sessions Marna
also manages to fit in time to train six
days every week ... be it cycling, open
water swimming, running or strength
training. There’s even talks about
running the Comrades Marathon and
doing the Ironman 70.3 in Mosselbay
later this year. Now that’s #goals!
“Funny enough, I was never really a
sporty kind of girl when I was younger.
I did a bit of netball at school and of
course the compulsory PE classes
where I was always back of the pack
and trudged through the classes.
After school, I started studying for
my teacher’s degree. I became a fullblown
student with loads of takeaway
food and no exercise. The most I
would exert myself was a fast walk to a
class when I was late. But some health
issues, later on, made me realise I need
to make a change.”
And she did just that. She started
to run, and today she is the proud
owner of a Comrades marathon
green number and has four half
Ironman triathlons under her belt. So
it comes as no surprise that Marna is
also a finalist in the Woman in Sports
category for the Woman of Stature
Awards in March.
“Yes, I am passionate about sport and
healthy living, but that doesn’t mean
I don’t enjoy a good glass of wine or
bubbly with my girlfriends.”
At home, Marna is the no-makeupno-shoes
kind of woman, who loves
to spend time with friends and family
and play board games. Living life to
the max is what she is all about.
From solo jumping out of an
aeroplane, skinning dipping after
a long run to aiming to become a
contestant on Survivor, one thing is for
sure, for Marna life is mind over matter
... never allowing stereotypes and age
to limit her potential or what she can
achieve. Cheers to that!
Marna’s fave smoothie
After over-indulging during the holidays, a healthy smoothie is a great idea.
Here’s Marna’s favourite recipe:
You’ll need: 2 cups of coconut water; ½ pineapple, peeled and cored; ¼
papaya, peeled and pitted; ½ cucumber, cubed; 1 ½ teaspoon of fresh ginger,
grated; 1 teaspoon turmeric powder; ice
How to: Add all the ingredients to a blender. Blend for 30 to 60 seconds or
until smooth.
Eight tips to master
better habits in 2022
1
Make SPF your BFF. Using a good
sunscreen even on cloudy days
is so important it will shield your skin
from signs of ageing and sun damage.
2
Exercise at least three times a
week for 30 minutes. Studies have
shown that exercising only two to
three times a week will slow down the
ageing process by 25 per cent.
3
Get enough sleep. At least six
to eight hours a day. Sleep not
only helps our minds switch off but
also assists in weight loss and a
happy mood.
4
Add a spoonful of collagen to
your coffee in the morning. The
benefits are endless. Less wrinkles, no
achy joints, strong and healthy bones
to name a few.
5
Be mindful. Studies have shown
that getting in tune with
ourselves through mindfulness
improves wellbeing and brings
down stress.
6
Punctuate your day with a minimeditation
with one minute of
awareness of your thoughts, feelings,
and sensations - one minute of
focused attention on breathing and
one minute of awareness of the body
as a whole.
7
Be kind to yourself. Imagine being
your own best friend. Praise
yourself rather than wait for others to
do it. Remember you are enough!
8
Try something new. Trying
new things not only helps us
to vanquish those fears, but it also
allows us to expand our minds and
learn — both about said new thing,
and about ourselves. And then there’s
the rush. There’s nothing quite like or
as memorable as the thrill of a new
experience.
Tropical breakfast granola tarts
Makes 6 tarts; Prep time: 40 minutes
You’ll need: For the tarts - 1 ½ cups jungle oats, ¼ cup sunflower seeds, ½ cup black
sesame seeds, pinch of ground cinnamon, 1 tsp vanilla extract , ¼ cup runny honey,
1 egg white
For the filling -1 cup thick vanilla yoghurt, half a cubed mango
Method: Preheat the oven to 180 °C. Spray round foil cups (size about 7x3cm)
with a non-stick spray and set aside. Mix the oats, seeds, cinnamon, vanilla, honey,
and egg white in a large mixing bowl until well combined. Divide the mixture
between the prepared cups and firmly press the mixture down and towards the
sides to evenly coat the sides and bottoms. Bake until lightly golden, for about
15 minutes. Use a teaspoon to press the bottom and sides down once again
and continue to bake for an extra 10 minutes. Leave to cool completely before
removing from the cups.
Spoon the yoghurt into the cooled cases and top with the mango cubes.
The cups can be stored in an airtight container for later use – but be sure to use
them within a week.

The missing ingredient
South Africa’s celebrated All Sorts Cook and bestie in the kitchen,
Chantal Lascaris shares her secrets on quick-fix substitute ingredients –
and the one (maybe two) ingredients you can never ever replace.
“I once made a delicious butter chicken recipe
for a group of friends and left out the rice - by
accident. You can imagine my horror! Don’t
judge. It happens. Even the most experienced of
us in the kitchen can trip up – and that’s okay.”
Cooking, for Chantal Lascaris, has always
been about experimenting with flavours and
different ingredients, and, she says, most
importantly cutting yourself some slack when
you get it wrong.
“As a professional cook, the aim of course is
to not get it wrong as best as you can and so
I’ve learnt over the years how to switch things
up. You may not always have the correct
ingredients in your cupboard – or you may
over spice or under spice a pot of food (or,
hey, leave out the other half of your meal
altogether!). When this happens, we tend to
believe there is no way out. Oh, but there is.
There always is.
“Believe it or not the cooking process comes
with forgiveness. They’re called Substitutes
– and they work. Just when you think you’re
doomed to fail because you’re missing an
ingredient that the recipe calls for, think again.
Most often, you’ll be able to replace a missing
ingredient in the pot with a little something
else that’ll do just as well.
“Parsley. Lime. Walnuts. Even Sumac. They’re all
replaceable. Except garlic. Garlic and – wait for
it – love. In my book, these royal two are THE
only ingredients you can never replace. You’ll
always - always -) need an extra stash of these
lying around, because they matter more than
you think. Firstly, garlic is not only the king of
flavour but its immune boosting properties
are essential to our health. And secondly, love
is the queen of everything.”
Our lives, says Chantal, are incredibly
frenetic. And with a million things to attend
to and business as usual, we hardly have
time anymore to think of dinner or to shop
ingredients. So it’s comforting to know that
more often than not, when there’s something
missing in your bag of tricks, there’s always
another chef’s trick you can reach for.
Chantal’s quick-fix substitutes for missing ingredients
Shallot
Red onion
Parmesan Pecorino Romano (easily available)
Fresh parsley Dried parsley or celery leaves
Smoked salmon and citrus salad
This unusual pairing of salty smoked salmon
and sweet orange makes for a delectable
flavour combination. The punchy rocket is the
perfect foil for the citrusy dressing. Not to be
outdone, there’s the zing of the radish, the
coolness of the cucumber and the creamy
avocado, all brought together to create a salad
packed full of sunshine flavours.
You’ll need: 2 cups rocket, 2⁄3 cup thinly sliced
fennel bulb, 10cm diced cucumber, 1 sliced
avocado, half a cup thinly sliced radish, 200g
smoked salmon ribbons, one segmented
orange. For the dressing: Quarter of a cup
orange juice, 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar, 1 tbsp
Dijon mustard, 1 tsp honey, and salt and
pepper to taste
To make: Place half the rocket on a platter
and scatter over half the fennel, cucumber,
avocado and radish. Add the remaining rocket
and top with the remaining fennel, cucumber,
avocado and radish. Drape the smoked salmon
ribbons over the top and tuck the orange
segments in between. Whisk the dressing
ingredients and pour over the salad.
A twist on the classics.
This grilled peach split
is perfect for sharing.
You’ll find the recipe on
getitmagazines.co.za
In her latest release, The Ultimate Salad Book, Chantal brings
together her passion for healthy living and an invigorating
variety of flavours, resulting in a collection of recipes that will
have you upping your salad game in no time. Besides being
delicious, and really achievable for even nervous cooks, salads
(if eaten daily) add a huge boost to your body’s daily nutrient
consumption. This month we’re loving the smoked salmon and
citrus salad ... but plan on trying loads from the collection - there
are basic, vegetarian and three-ingredient salads, as well as those
highlighting fish and seafood (why not try the sweet and sour
fruity options (the grilled peach split is just made for sharing),
We will, this year, be celebrating
more than just new beginnings.
We’re also celebrating a
newfound appreciation for our
wellbeing and an opportunity to
create positive transformation.
What better way to feel restored and reset than by
looking to the healing properties of nature?
That’s the reasoning behind Plascon’s 2022
Colour Combination of the Year, featuring earthy
Africa-inspired hues.
Plus, they say, just as in nature, colours come to
life in harmony. Which is why this year, Plascon
has given us not just one colour, but has brought
together three beautiful hues in a combination to
capture the mood of the year. These colours pay
homage to the natural African landscape outside
of our homes while bringing the simple pleasures
of nature inside.
The colour combination works in a 60:30:10 ratio,
a ratio which aligns with best design practices
that the industry utilises, and a great idea for you
to keep in mind when decorating. The basics
are ... 60 per cent of a space should consist of a
dominant colour, 30 per cent a secondary colour,
and 10 per cent an accent colour.
This year the hero - or dominant - colour
representing 60 per cent of the ratio is Plascon
Pear Fantasy (Y5-B2-1). This soft yellow-green
makes for a modern, neutral shade while being
comfortingly familiar. Capturing the soothing
charm of a sandy shore at sunrise, this shade
instantly puts our minds at ease and enlivens
our spaces.
Then 30 per cent of the colour combo ratio is
Plascon Desert Water (B5-B2-2) - a calming and
uplifting pale blue hue with an illuminating touch
of purple. Inspired by the sunlit surface of tranquil
water, this shade is subtle yet impactful, perfectly
complementing the neutral Pear Fantasy. Lighter
blue shades are associated with health, healing,
tranquillity, and softness.
Rounding off the ratio, Plascon Zanzibar (70) makes
up the final 10 per cent. Described as a soft yet
grounded colour, there’s a quiet warmth to this
gentle smoky brown that brings an anchoring
balance to lighter, cleaner hues. Capturing the
fresh soil and majestic tree trunks of an early
morning trail, this colour brilliantly accentuates
the other two shades.
Adding to the appeal is the local reflection of this
combination. Very often, trends that filter down
to us from Europe or the USA don’t really work in
an African reality. But these colours - and even the
names - have been chosen to reflect a specifically
African context ... colours that reflect the way we
live here, and that are created with Africa in mind.
Earth
hues
Set the tone for the
new year with this
year’s colour palette,
which encourages
calm, optimism,
and balance.
Pure aromatherapy
Staying with the theme of bringing calm and balance into our
lives, we’re loving our Organic Aromas Nebulizing Diffuser for
Aromatherapy. This Raindrop Light is so gorgeous ... it’s refined
and elegant, with a handmade wood base and custom-blown
glass diffuser. So it sits jolly prettily alongside our home decor
pieces. No plastic here. No water or heat, either, which is another
reason why we’re so keen. It uses only essential oils - and talking
oils, the team at Organic Aromas guarantee these really are ‘pure
organic oils’, and have the testing stats to back up their promise.
They’re certainly potent ... we tested the diffuser in an open plan
area and the scent wafted from one room to the next beautifully.
The diffuser has a switch allowing you to control how much
oil you want to release, and works on a two-minutes-on, oneminute-off
basis, turning off completely after two hours. There
is rotating rainbow LED mood lighting ... if you’re not a fan and
prefer no glow, it has an easy-to-turn-off function. There are five
equally attractive designs to choose from, and a dozen essential
oils, and there are great kits, too. Diffusers R1650, oils from R185,
Let the romance
BLOSSOM
A sweet and tender superfood that is easy to grow. Exotic
candy-coloured pink plants that make the ideal romantic
gift. And Dianthus ‘I Love You’ for Valentine’s Day.
Garden tasks
• Water early morning or late
afternoon to help plants stand up to
the heat. • Keep the soil cool by mulching
around plants and put shade cloth over veggie
beds. • Use biological or organic controls for
pests like aphids, white fly and mealie bug that
suck the sap out of stems and leaves. • Don’t cut
back or prune plants during very hot periods.
Leaves act as a cooling system for plants. •
Water container plants and hanging baskets
every day, even twice a day on very hot
days. • Mow the lawn longer to shade
the roots. This makes it more
drought tolerant.
Indoor plant for February
This is the month when indoor flowering plants come into their own as
romantic gift plants. One of the most exotic, and unusual, is Curcuma, also
known as the Siamese tulip. It has candy-coloured pink of purple pinecone
shaped flowers that rise about lush green leaves. Being a tropical
plant, it loves warm, summer temperatures. As a patio plant it can take
some dappled sun or early morning sun, and as an indoor plant does best
with bright, diffused light. Let the soil slightly dry out before watering
and add a little liquid plant food to the water once every two weeks. It
produces two to five new flowers, each lasting about three weeks. In winter
it goes dormant, and the leaves die down. Stop watering and keep the pot
in a cool place. In spring bring it out onto warm windowsill, water, and feed
for a new flush of flowers. Details: lvgplant.co.za
Did you know that turnips are
a superfood? They are loaded
with vitamins and minerals as
well as omega-3 fatty acids
and protein. Here’s something
else you may not know.
They’re delicious mashed (as
a substitute for potatoes) or
shredded raw as a coleslaw.
Turnips grow easily from seed,
and if you don’t have space sow
a row in a deep trough. They
don’t take up as much space
as other brassicas. Use potting
soil enriched with compost
and sprinkle the seeds on the
surface. Cover with a light layer
of potting mix or sieved coffee
grounds, that adds nitrogen
and discourage slugs. Turnips
like moist soil from germination
to harvest. Thin out seedlings to
10cm apart and start harvesting
from 40 days onwards. The
smaller the turnips the sweeter
they are, and the leaves can be
eaten as greens.
Kirchhoffs Turnip Early Purple Top
Globe is an heirloom variety. It has a
purple shoulder with a white body.
The flesh is sweet and tender, and is
good for harvesting young as baby
veg. Details: kirchhoffs.co.za
Love You for Valentine’s Day.
It’s like a delicate posy, with
frilled double flowers that
change from deep pink, to light
pink and finally white. Plants
are compact and perfect for
popping into a pot, along with
chocolates and champagne
(why not!). It’s happy to be
planted out into the garden, in
soil that drains well and where
it gets plenty of sun. It will keep
on flowering if fertilised once a
month. Just cut back the spent
flowers and it will flower again
in three to four weeks.
7Teen BaCK TO BOOKs
Parents know how to inspire a love of books in babies and toddlers ... Just put them on
your lap, and start reading. But as kids get older and go to school, reading can be seen
as work rather than fun - and kids, especially teens, may stop reading for pleasure.
Here are nine ways to get
teens reading, either again
or for the first time:
FIND THE ‘WHY’ IN YA - YA (young
adult) novels tackle the edgy
issues teens face and struggle with,
from peer pressure and romantic
longing to grief and trouble
at home or school. Whether they’re
personally grappling with these issues or
seeking vicarious thrills, teens gravitate
toward subject matter that’s relatable.
Check the YA bestseller lists for ideas.
GET GRAPHIC - Gone are the
days when graphic novels were
dismissed as comic books. Now
recognised as literature, they may
be the key to getting some teens
hooked on books. They’re available in a
wide range of genres – from adventure
and fantasy to historical fiction, memoir
and biography – so there’s certainly a
graphic novel out there to suit your
teen’s taste.
LURE THEM WITH ADULT
BOOKS Find non-fiction titles
on subjects your teen is curious
about, such as climate change,
race, political corruption or
true crime. Check adult non-fiction
bestseller lists to see what’s catching
fire. Humorous adult books also work
(by David Sedaris or Tina Fey, for
example), as do horror (Stephen King),
mysteries (Agatha Christie), thrillers
(James Patterson, John Grisham), fantasy
(George R.R. Martin), science fiction (Isaac
Asimov), and sports (Michael Lewis).
4GIVE THE
GIFT OF
READING
Hand your
teen a
gift card
from your local
bookstore. They’ll
discover the
treasure-hunt fun
of looking for a
good book.
5MERGE MOVIES WITH BOOKS - Hollywood is turning to teen lit for
ideas more than ever. Offer your teen the print version to read before or
after a big film adaptation comes out, and talk about the similarities and
differences between the two.
TRY POETRY - Novels in verse are a popular trend. All that white space on
the page makes them easy to read, and the spare, lyrical approach can
really pack a punch. Try Sarah Crossan’s One, Stasia Ward Kehoe’s The
Sound of Letting Go, or Ellen Hopkins’ Rumble. Memoirs in verse are
taking hold, too; check out Marilyn Nelson’s How I Discovered Poetry.
LET THEM LISTEN - Spark teens’ interest by getting an audio book to
listen to on the way to school or on long drives. Let them download
audiobooks to their smartphones. (They won’t risk looking uncool,
because they’ll be under headphones or have their earbuds in.)
BUSH SAFARI
xxxxx
Sleep-outs. Boma dinners. Sunset drives. The romance of a safari.
We’re suggesting a Jock Safari Lodge getaway this February.
Honestly. Is there anything more romantic than a
bush jaunt? We think not. And this month’s lodge
won over our hearts instantly.
There’s the romantic background ... Jock Safari
Lodge was founded by the descendants of the
author Sir Percy FitzPatrick, and is named after his
book, Jock of the Bushveld, the famous and muchloved
story, set during South Africa’s first gold rush
era, of canine hero Jock’s courage and loyalty.
Steeped in history, it’s tucked away in the southwestern
corner of the Kruger National Park, where
the Mitomeni (Shangaan for ‘Jackalberry Tree’) and
Biyamiti (Shangaan for ‘Place of many Trees’) rivers
meet. It was the first private concession granted
within our largest national park, and has 6000
hectares of exclusive traversing rights ... so right
up there with the best for animal viewing. And
the bush was just teeming with animals when we
visited. The Big Five showed their famous faces on
the very first sunset drive - and there’d obvs been a
lot of romance - or good old-fashioned lust - going
on as there were babes every which way we looked,
including a dozen lion cubs between three mums,
and half a dozen or so newly born ellies, tripping
over their feet and slapping each other with their
out-of-control trunks.
Talking babes, another reason this lodge won us
over is because it allows - it welcomes! - children,
who have their own Kids on Safari programme.
Back to romance ... the lodge is all old-school safari
These are the social media links - we will appreciate you - vintage-style furniture, leather travel trunks,
spreading the word as far and wide as possible, prior, during wooden decks with comfy chairs and an elevated
and after your stay, also tagging @FiveStarPRZA (Instagram bar and lounge with a fire pit and river view.
and Twitter) in your social media posts please.
Our hearts did a little flutter when we were shown
the suites, too. Just 12 of them, each with an
Jock Safari Lodge
outdoor Victorian bath and shower, a private plunge
pool and an enclosed sala day bed, where you can
Reservations: 013 010 0019
laze away your days watching the ellies pass by, or
Belinda Strauss - Lodge Operations Manager: 060 603 0866
ask, as we did, for the beds to be made up and have
a sleep-out. Sweet, sweet dreams.
An Ombré ring from
Janine Binneman
We’re besotted with this Ombré
Collection by Janine Binneman
Jewellery Design ... precious
beauties which are bright and bold,
with sparkles that will steal your heart!
With her cyan-coloured hair and choice
of imagination over practicality, Janine’s
jewellery is incredibly exquisite. There’s
this Ombré range (stack them up for
rainbow beauty), as well as a Treasure
Me Bling range, a Mermaid
birthstone collection (seriously
thoughtful birthday gift right there!),
and so much more, including custom
designed pieces. We love the children’s
art idea ... she turns your child’s art
into a piece of jewellery. How special
is that? Besides ticking the creative
box, she also ticks a few more ... all her
gems are sourced ethically including
conflict-free diamonds, each piece has
the craftsmanship, detail and quality
of being created by hand, and when
you buy a Janine Binneman original,
a portion of the profits goes back
into community upliftment. Details:
