OVERVIEW
IT’S now 16 years since Reading swept all before them en route
to the Championship title and a record points total of 106 – and
this season is all about survival for the beleaguered Berkshire side.
The Royals spent three seasons in the Premier League between 2006
and 2013, sliding back to the second tier alongside QPR in the latter
year and an agonising play-off final defeat to Huddersfield on penalties
marked the closest they have come to a return.
Since that Wembley disappointment in 2017, Reading have
generally struggled both on and off the field, with managers coming
and going at regular intervals prior to the appointment of current boss
Veljko Paunović.
Earlier this season the club were hit by a six-point deduction for a
breach of EFL financial rules, having racked up losses of around £40m
in the previous three years.
That has restricted Paunović to loans and free transfers as
he attempts to strengthen his squad and, with four consecutive
losses coming into today’s game, the Royals are hovering
dangerously above the relegation zone.
