HOOPS
The Gaffer
FIRSTLY, MAY I EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO
VELJKO PAUNOVIC, HIS STAFF, PLAYERS AND ALL
ASSOCIATED WITH READING FC.
T
he club have had a tough
season for a variety of
reasons, however Veljko is an
excellent coach and there is no doubt
that he will bring a very well-organised
team to our stadium today, one that
can deliver a high level of performance.
They have a nice blend of youthful
energy and good quality experience,
and we are very aware that they will
present a formidable challenge. As
always, it is an encounter we are very
much looking forward to, and while we
are not permitted to share a postgame
drink with Veljko and his staff,
we wish everyone a safe journey back
to Berkshire.
The game on Tuesday evening against
Swansea was obviously frustrating. Of
course, we never want to drop points
in any fixture, however the home
games are seen as vitally important
for any team with high aspirations.
It is important not to lose sight of
the bigger picture, and the players
deserve much praise for delivering
four consecutive wins and moving
themselves into a strong league
position. Expectations naturally get
raised and I believe it is of course
important for our supporters to enjoy
seeing the team do well, but similarly,
this division presents a tough challenge
with every single fixture. On occasion
we must recognise that taking one
point from a game might prove
invaluable come the end of the season.
In addition, with individuals away on
international duty and the injuries that
naturally accompany this stage of a
campaign, the players have stepped up
and responded well to being asked to
play unfamiliar roles or slightly differing
formations. They have displayed a
unity and togetherness combined with
an outstanding work ethic and these
attributes, combined with no shortage
of skill, have moved them into such a
positive position.
With the league schedule meaning we
soon play another seven games in 21
days, it would obviously help to add some
depth and quality to the squad, but only if
the right players become available.
HOOPS
From a defensive perspective, we have
been able to secure the services of Dion
Sanderson, on loan from Wolves, and
we are delighted to welcome him to the
club. Dion has played against us this
season while at Birmingham and showed
his qualities both with and without the
ball. A physically powerful athlete, Dion
is comfortable in possession, and he will
provide another layer of quality to both
the defensive unit and the overall playing
squad. Dion will undoubtedly be pushing
hard for a starting berth, and it is this
level of competition that we must have if
we are to keep pushing forward.
An attacking midfield option would be
another ideal addition, but such players
are so difficult to secure. Any player
coming into the squad must provide a
quality that we currently lack and as such,
with the calibre of players we already
have at our disposal, this will prove
difficult at best. Much work is going on
behind the scenes and, as we approach
the end of the window, we may hopefully
see some late flurry of activity.
You will see from the club website
that some of our younger players are
being sent out on loan to gain invaluable
experience. Stephen Duke-McKenna
has gone to Torquay and Aaron Drewe
has joined Weymouth. This is such a
brutally difficult business for any aspiring
player, and it is the experience gained on
such loans that can play an important
part in defining the next stage of their
careers. We wish all of our young loanees
the best of luck.
That just leaves me, as always, to express
my appreciation for the continued
backing that you have consistently given
the team, both at home and on the road.
Once again on Tuesday, despite freezing
conditions and the game being shown live
on Sky, you turned out in good numbers
and gave great vocal support. I apologise
for repeating the same message, however
the backing is greatly appreciated and
never taken for granted!
Enjoy the game!
SANDERSON SEALS
RANGERS MOVE
QPR confirmed the signing of
Wolves defender Dion Sanderson
on loan until the end of the
season just before Tuesday’s
game against Swansea City.
The 22-year-old, who can play
in a central role or on the righthand
side, emerged onto the
pitch to greet Rangers fans prior
to the 0-0 draw.
Sanderson could make his debut
this afternoon, having lined
up against the R’s twice this
season during his loan spell with
Birmingham City.
“This is the next stage of my
development and I couldn’t be
anywhere better than QPR,” said
Sanderson.
“I studied QPR, their style of play
and how the gaffer likes to play,
and it suits me so it just made
absolute sense to come here.
“I’m an aggressive ball-playing
defender. I like a battle with any
strikers – it’s part of my game. I
might not look the biggest but I’ll
give you a tough time.
“The team are in a good
place. Promotion is key but we
have to take one game at a time.
“Wherever the gaffer wants
me to help, I’m willing to help –
whether that’s playing or in the
dressing room around the boys.”
Sanderson, who has been on
the books at his hometown
club since the age of eight, has
also had previous loan spells at
Cardiff and Sunderland.
DUO DEPART ON
LOAN
TWO younger members of the
squad have been loaned out to
National League sides until the
end of the season.
Defender Aaron Drewe, who
made his first-team debut
against Rotherham in the FA Cup
earlier this month, will spend the
remainder of the campaign at
Weymouth.
The 20-year-old made his
Terras debut in their 2-1 home
defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge
on Tuesday.
Midfielder Stephen Duke-
McKenna has been loaned to
Torquay and featured twice in
their starting line-up this week,
helping the Gulls to a 2-1 victory
at Altrincham before a 2-0
reverse against Solihull Moors
three days later.
WELCOME BACK,
ANTON
FORMER QPR defender
Anton Ferdinand returns to the
pitch at half-time today for his
induction into the ranks of the
Forever R’s club.
Ferdinand, who had spent several
years at the top level with West
Ham and Sunderland before
joining Rangers in 2011, made 49
appearances for the club.
The 36-year-old played in Turkey
and Thailand prior to a twoyear
spell with this afternoon’s
opponents, Reading. He is now
retired from the game, having
ended his career with stints at
Southend and St Mirren.
HOOPS
Lyndon, after the team’s recent run
of form, can we dare to dream about
making the top two?
It’s always good to dream because it
gives you something to push for, but
you can’t get carried away and take your
foot off the gas. We might be saying ‘we
could have done better’ at the end of the
season, or we might be saying ‘what a
year!’ and we’ve gone up into the Premier
League. There are a lot of games left at
this stage and anything can happen.
Having missed most of November and
December with an ankle injury, you must
be pleased to be playing regularly again…
It was bad timing with the injury – my
momentum was good in terms of playing
games and scoring goals. I picked it up
in the game against Nottingham Forest,
it was just from the impact of a tackle
and it was a lingering thing that ended up
being ligament damage. I played a couple
of games with the injury and struggled
to get through it. I hate being injured but
it was one of those things and I’m just
happy to be back on the pitch, feeling
good and also with the team playing well.
Your first goal of 2022 was that late
equaliser against Rotherham to keep us
in the FA Cup…
Rotherham were a decent side and,
although I didn’t start the game, I just
wanted to make a difference for the team
once I got on. It was really good to get
that goal and ultimately we did well in the
penalty shoot-out and got through. You
want to get as far as you can in the FA
Cup, hopefully draw some big teams and
I think that’s something the supporters
enjoy as well.
This may be a predictable question
for any centre-forward – can you
feel content if you’re contributing to
14 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

HOOPS
So many of the boys have
been chipping in with goals,
especially late in games -
Charlie, Albert and Yoann for
example - that we’ve managed
to keep momentum going
victories for your team but not finding
the net regularly yourself?
Of course. We’ve been on an amazing
run and everyone can see where we are
in the league. As a striker, you want to
chip in with goals, but sometimes you
might not get as many chances as you’d
like and, especially if you’re playing as
one of two up front, you also have to do
more work tracking back. But so many
of the boys have been chipping in with
goals, especially late in games – Charlie,
Albert and Yoann for example – that
we’ve managed to keep momentum
going, even in games where we haven’t
played at our best.
At the beginning of your QPR career,
you were operating as a lone striker
– how much difference has it made
playing in a pair more frequently?
It is different playing as a pair – you have
to work together and obviously it means
you also have different roles because
there are fewer players in midfield.
Charlie and Andre are great strikers,
we all have our different qualities and,
when you’ve got strikers who can link
up well, things tend to go better for the
team. It helps that you can spread the
goals around and, when you’re attacking
crosses, it means defenders have to
worry about two of you instead of just
one – that can free you up and give you
WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC 15

HOOPS
Charlie and I get on
really well but maybe if
that comes up, I’ll have to
put him in a headlock to try
and get the ball
the extra space you need. Every team is
different and you have to adapt to what’s
required – with Scotland, for example, we
play one up top with a No 10 in behind.
You and Charlie Austin both have a
pretty decent record when it comes
to taking penalties – who gets first
crack if you’re both on the pitch at
the same time?
For a striker, penalties can add a few
goals to your tally at the end of the year,
so obviously we both want to be taking
them. I’ll certainly put my hand straight
up for it! That situation hasn’t happened
yet but it’ll be a conversation to be had
between us, depending on the game and
the situation. Charlie and I get on really
well but maybe if that comes up, I’ll have
to put him in a headlock to try and get
the ball!
Your international team-mate David
Marshall recently joined QPR – did you
get involved in ensuring that move
came about?
I spoke with David beforehand – in my
head I thought he’d be a great addition
to the squad with his experience. You
can see how big a player he’s been for
Scotland and, with Seny going away at a
critical time in the season and then the
injury to Jordan, it just happened to work
out and he’s started really well. With all
the experience he brings, sometimes
you need that when you’re trying to push
for promotion – it can be a major factor
in winning games.
HOOPS
Being involved with the
Euros last summer was
amazing, now we’ve got a
massive play-off game coming
up and we’re very close to
getting to the World Cup
Having been in a great run of form for
Scotland just before you got injured,
what would it mean if you could score
the goals to nail down World Cup
qualification?
It would be a moment in my career
that’d stay with me forever, I think. I
wanted to play for Scotland to try and
become remembered by getting the
team back to major tournaments. Being
involved with the Euros last summer was
amazing, now we’ve got a massive playoff
game coming up and we’re very close
to getting to the World Cup. I think we do
deserve to be there with the players we
have. I really enjoy going away with the
Scotland boys, we’ve got a great bond
and togetherness that’s taken us to
where we are now and hopefully I can be
involved in taking us to the World Cup.
On the subject of tournaments later
this year, given your background – who
will you be cheering for at the Rugby
League World Cup? I believe Scotland
and Australia are in the same group…
I’ll be backing Scotland! It’ll be a tough
one because the Aussies are quite good,
but we’ll see what happens when that
comes around. Hopefully I’ll be in Qatar
watching the final on TV – that’d be nice!
F
our thousand, and you could hear every
single one of us from miles away.
There’s something poetic about an away day.
They don’t really make sense on paper. Spending
all our cash on a train to god-knows-where to
stand up for two hours in the cold, with the bestcase
scenario – no guarantee, mind – that we
see our football team win a match.
My away journeys are rarer than I’d like, and they
don’t start as some other people’s do. There’s
no crate of beer, no group of mates (there aren’t
many of us travelling to Coventry from Cardiff!).
The day starts as a relatively sedate affair.
Then, slowly, the away day starts ticking, and
signs of life appear. It’s usually not a QPR scarf
(the other day it was actually Bristol Rovers). Oh
look, there’s someone else going to an away
game! They’re a part of the same bizarre routine
that I am! That’s fun!
Then another (Wimbledon). Then another
(Aston Villa). Then another (Swindon). Like in a
sci-fi film, when the camera pans out to reveal
a wider, more glorious landscape than the
initial shot suggested, you realise you’re part of
this great sprawling machine of club football.
Thousands of people going to hundreds of
places on millions of (delayed) trains. Challenge
any of them to explain why, and the explanation
wouldn’t sound like something any sensible
human would willingly do.
But what was the trip to Coventry, if not a
reminder of EXACTLY what it’s all about?
All the clichés, every damn one of them. Hearing
the roar of a packed away end echoing across
the stadium, folding back in on itself, completely
enveloping you. Watching a goal go in, and
grabbing fistfuls of scarves and arms and coats
and leaping and yelling and losing your voice and
yelling some more.
Being rewarded, so thoroughly, for our
travels. People talk about how Warburton has
reconnected the team with the fans. It’s true. It
would still be true if we weren’t winning games.
People wouldn’t be saying it if we weren’t winning
games. People are fickle, and I include myself in
that. We’re exceedingly lucky that things, even if
just for now, are going as well as they are.
But in those moments, when I was stood next to
Sam Taylor, founder of the ‘R’ Generation site,
who I’d known for nearly two years online but
only met in person that day, with his dad and his
friend, and then Adomah scored, it felt like we
were destined to win that game, and we were
destined to win every other game in the future
until the universe eventually ceases to exist.
The decision to go to Coventry suddenly made
perfect sense.
OPPOSITION
OVERVIEW
O P P O S I T I O N O V E R V I E W
IT’S now 16 years since Reading swept all before them en route
to the Championship title and a record points total of 106 – and
this season is all about survival for the beleaguered Berkshire side.
The Royals spent three seasons in the Premier League between 2006
and 2013, sliding back to the second tier alongside QPR in the latter
year and an agonising play-off final defeat to Huddersfield on penalties
marked the closest they have come to a return.
Since that Wembley disappointment in 2017, Reading have
generally struggled both on and off the field, with managers coming
and going at regular intervals prior to the appointment of current boss
Veljko Paunović.
Earlier this season the club were hit by a six-point deduction for a
breach of EFL financial rules, having racked up losses of around £40m
in the previous three years.
That has restricted Paunović to loans and free transfers as
he attempts to strengthen his squad and, with four consecutive
losses coming into today’s game, the Royals are hovering
dangerously above the relegation zone.
Former Atletico Madrid
Paunović may have
been a surprise choice
to replace Mark Bowen
at the start of last
season, but the Serbian
manager surpassed
expectations by
guiding the Royals to
seventh place.
Paunović, who won two
played in Germany and
Russia before winding
down his club career
with Philadelphia Union.
He began coaching with
the Serbia national
team, taking charge of
the U18 and U19 sides
before overseeing
World Cup success with
the U20s in 2015.
That achievement took
Paunović back to the
four-year stint as coach
of Chicago Fire, where
he led his side to the
play-offs and two
Having joined Reading as
a youngster, Southwood
signed his first
make his Royals debut.
Loan spells Bath City
EXPERIENCED central defender
Michael Morrison arrived at
Reading in 2019 following a
Having started out at Cambridge
Midfielder Mikele Leigertwood featured in successive
Championship-winning seasons, playing for QPR in 2010/11
before moving to Reading and matching that achievement a year
later.
Leigertwood, who began his career at Wimbledon, won promotion to
the Premier League with Crystal Palace before moving on to Sheffield
United and then Rangers in a £900,000 deal in August 2007.
During his three and a half years with the Hoops, he was also deployed
in central defence and at right-back, finding the net 12 times in 131
games prior to joining Reading, initially on loan.
The Royals signed Leigertwood on a permanent deal at the end of the
2010/11 season and he went on to score the goal that sealed their
promotion a year later, eventually retiring due to injury in 2014. He
returned to the club two years later as Academy loan manager.
HOOPS
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
G
ood afternoon and welcome
back to the Kiyan Prince
Foundation Stadium for today’s
game against Reading.
Reading have had a difficult season so far
and sit just above the relegation places
going into today’s game. They are on
a poor run of form at present, but they
have some very good players and will
prove a difficult hurdle to overcome as
we try to gain another valuable three
points this afternoon. The reverse fixture
back in September was an entertaining
game where we came back from 3-1
down to get a point with late goals from
Andre Gray and Stefan Johansen.
That game should be a reminder that
Reading have quality in their ranks and
we need to be fully focused on the job
in hand. I believe people can sometimes
make the mistake of looking at league
table positions or the latest run of form
and expect the game ahead to be a
formality in terms of winning. Football
does not work like that and, while form
and league position can be a guide, you
still have to earn every point you get and
make sure you are prepared and ready
for every opponent and the challenge
they throw at you.
The Championship is such a tough
league that, if you are not quite at
the levels you need to be at, you will
come unstuck and lose games. I am
sure we will be fully focused, ready and
determined to do all we can to get the
result we want today.
I am writing these notes after the 0-0
draw with Swansea City. Reflecting on
the game, it is fair to say we were not at
our best by any means against a Swansea
team who like to dominate possession
and are a good side. Chances in the
game were few and far between, but we
had a couple of decent opportunities
that we didn’t take and also had an effort
come back off the inside of the post.
Sometimes you are left feeling a little
32 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

HOOPS
frustrated and disappointed having not
won the game.
However, looking at the positives to take
from the game, it is another point on
the board which could prove to be very
valuable in the long run and also keeps
our good unbeaten run going to six
games, five of which are in the league.
Thirteen points from a possible 15 on
offer in those five games is an excellent
return. Defensively, it’s another clean
sheet and we are still fourth in the table,
so we are in a very good position as we
come into today’s game. The table is
very tight and there is still such a long
way to go in the season, but every point
matters and has to be earned. One thing
for sure is that there will be twists and
turns and bumps in the road over the
coming weeks and months.
Can I take this opportunity to welcome
new signing Dion Sanderson and hope
his time here with us is successful both
for Dion and for the club. Dion will add
real competition for places in defensive
areas, which can only be a good thing
over the next few months, and all of us
here at the club wish him well.
Finally, I am sure you will join me in
extending a warm welcome back to
Anton Ferdinand, who returns to be
inducted into our popular Forever R’s
club at half-time today. The challenges
Anton faced during his time at the club
are well documented, but I know how
much he appreciated the support he
received from the fans during what was
an extremely difficult period for him
personally.
Please show Anton all your support once
again this afternoon as we welcome
him back and into our former players’
association.
Thanks as always for the tremendous
support you are giving the team and we
need you again today. Really get behind
the team again this afternoon and enjoy
the game.
Come on you R’s!
GARY, our run to the FA Cup final
seems like yesterday, doesn’t it?
In many ways it does, you wonder
much has changed but really it
doesn’t seem that long ago.
Looking back at the semi-final
Albion at Highbury, all the build-up
before the game was about Albion’s
West Brom were a good team with
some extremely talented players.
However, big Bob Hazell was brilliant for
us in marking Cyrille out of the game.
Cyrille was an outstanding centreforward
but Bob played really well – he
didn’t give him a sniff all afternoon.
Clive Allen scored the only goal for us
in the 72nd minute when he blocked a
clearance by West Brom defender Ally
Robertson and the ball cannoned into
the net. Would you say it was a scruffy
but glorious moment?
The game started well for us, but it
could have gone either way before we
got a little bit of a fluke goal! The ball
flew in off Clive’s knee. I remember,
with about 10 minutes to go, one of
their lads had a shot and I was right
behind him. He arrowed it at the goal
and how it missed I don’t know! I
thought to myself: “Oh my God! How
did that not go in? We must be in the
final now!”
Rangers had tremendous support at
Highbury – our fans filled the whole
of the famous North Bank…
I remember arriving on the team coach
outside the main entrance and all we
could see were West Brom supporters.
I was thinking: “Where are our fans?”
But when we got inside, there were a
lot of QPR supporters already in the
stadium. They gave us magnificent
backing for the entire 90 minutes.
HOOPS
The celebrations at the final whistle
were immense…
Before the game, I don’t think any
player thinks about what you are
going to do if you win. You are
concentrating so much on the match,
what you need to do on the pitch and
how you are going to play. And then
afterwards if you have won, it is just a
massive release. So there were tears
in the dressing room at Highbury,
laughter and cheers. Everybody was
just so pleased knowing that we had a
huge game coming up at Wembley
Stadium in a few weeks’ time and we
all wanted to play in it. We were just a
young team and ecstatic to be in an
FA Cup final. I was only 21 and I
thought: “If you get this every couple
of years in your career, it’s brilliant!”
However it never, ever happened for
me again after that.
On to the final against Tottenham
Hotspur – in those days, it was the
biggest showpiece occasion in
football, wasn’t it?
Yes, there was a really big build-up on
television from 10 or 11am, showing
the players getting ready at their
hotels and so on. The feeling that we
were going to be playing in the final
and be part of it all was just incredible.
Glenn Hoddle gave Spurs the lead in
that first match before Terry Fenwick
headed our equaliser. It was a truly
pulsating affair and you played your
part, didn’t you?
I started the afternoon on the
substitute’s bench. I was hoping to
get on but really did not expect to play
a major role. Sadly for him, Clive Allen
twisted his ankle after about five
minutes – it was obvious straight away
that he really couldn’t continue much
longer. Clive managed to limp on until
half-time and then Terry Venables
had to substitute him and change the
system around so I went on. It was a
HOOPS
tight game, obviously the lads did very
well and Peter Hucker had a fantastic
match in goal. I know Spurs scored but
we were well in the game. From a
throw-in and a flick-on, Terry Fenwick
nodded our equaliser and all of a
sudden, it was game on again. We
went back to the hotel knowing that
we had a replay to look forward to on
the Thursday evening – another
chance of a victory.
When did you realise you would be in
the starting line-up for that replay at
Wembley?
I was obviously hoping to start
because I had played quite a chunk of
the first match when Clive came off,
but I didn’t know for sure until a couple
of days before the replay. I was thrilled
that I was going to be involved and I
just loved every minute of the game,
apart from the result, which was
devastating. It is among my favourite
memories from my football career. I
am so proud nowadays to say that I
played in an FA Cup final.
We did everything but score in that
1-0 defeat…
Quite early on, Tony Currie brought
down Tottenham’s Graham Roberts in
the box. Glenn Hoddle converted the
penalty for them and it looked like we
were up against it. But we played really
well and I thought I had equalised
when I shot home from close range. A
free-kick came in, the ball went up in
the air and I half-volleyed it into the
net. As I struck the ball, I did hear the
whistle but naturally I carried on.
Regrettably, the ref gave a free-kick
for Spurs and, to this day, I don’t really
know why my goal was disallowed.
We’ll never know! We had lots of other
good chances and John Gregory hit
the bar with a volley, a great effort
from him! I think we were the better
team for the replay despite being
Division Two underdogs. It was just
one of those games where it didn’t go
40 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

HOOPS
If you get this every
couple of years in your
career, it’s brilliant!
our way. On reflection, it was
marvellous to get to the final, it really
was. To win it would have been the
icing on the cake.
Tottenham had some world-famous
players but we were a very good
Division Two side, weren’t we?
An exceptionally good team when you
look at the players that we had…Clive
Allen, John Gregory, Terry Fenwick,
Simon Stainrod, Peter Hucker, Warren
Neill. There was real quality
throughout the whole Rangers squad.
So it was no surprise at all that Terry
Venables got us going. In many ways,
Terry played a major part in all our
careers. He was a coach who was just
on a different planet to everybody
else. He got us organised and closing
down, showing opposition players
inside and everything. Teams close
down in the modern era but Terry had
us doing that way back in 1982. When
you achieve that organisation with
decent players, all of a sudden Terry
had a very good team at QPR. After
reaching the FA Cup final, we won
Division Two the following season and
12 months later we finished fifth in
the top flight to qualify for the UEFA
Cup. But unfortunately Terry decided
to go off to manage Barcelona and
the Rangers team broke up soon
afterwards. It was a real shame.
How would you sum up your own
style of play?
Most of the time, Terry played me on
the right. But throughout my career, I
appeared in several different positions
in midfield and I finished up as a
right-back, playing for Gillingham
under Tony Pulis.
You’re 60 years old now, Gary – what
are you up to?
I was a professional footballer for 19
years and now I have been a black cab
driver for 20 years. I don’t work loads
of hours these days, I just do what I
have to do and get myself home. I got
married last year and moved house a
couple of years ago. It’s nice being
settled – I have three daughters and
five grandchildren and my wife has
three children, so it’s a big family for
us. Looking back, I loved my time at
QPR and remember that spell fondly.
The crowd were so close to the pitch
at Loftus Road that the atmosphere
was always electric. Those fans at
QPR were very kind to me and it was
such an enjoyable part of my life. I
wish I could do it again, in all honesty! I
am so pleased that the R’s are doing
well this season as I always look out
for their results.
Competition: FA Cup fourth round replay
Attendance: 11,712
STRIKER supreme Clive Allen trotted off the
pitch at the end with the match ball tucked
safely under his arm after poaching four goals
for Rangers in their comfortable victory.
This FA Cup fourth round replay took place
following a 0-0 draw in swirling weather
conditions up at Blackpool three days earlier.
Hoops boss Terry Venables promised that
there would be a different outcome on the
Loftus Road plastic pitch and he was correct
with his prediction.
On a mild, clear evening, Division Two
promotion contenders QPR ripped into their
fourth-tier opponents. And once that first
goal had arrived, the floodgates opened.
The breakthrough came in the 26th minute.
Midfield maestro Tony Currie fired over
a dipping cross shot which visiting keeper
Iain Hesford spilled and Allen applied
a simple finish.
On the stroke of half-time, Simon Stainrod
made it 2-0 to Rangers from the penalty spot
with his 17th goal of the season. That award
came after Blackpool’s veteran defender
Peter Noble fouled Terry Fenwick in the box.
In the 54th minute, QPR struck again. Mike
Flanagan spotted Hesford off his line and
executed a crafty chip but the ball bounced
off the crossbar. Allen nipped in to convert
from 10 yards out.
Seven minutes later, the R’s striker sealed his
hat-trick with the best goal of the game. Ian
Gillard’s cross from the left was headed back
at the far post by John Gregory, allowing Allen
to do the rest.
Blackpool notched a consolation strike on 72
minutes through substitute Wayne Entwistle.
Then with 13 minutes to go, Allen capitalised
on a Keystone Kops-style defensive mix-up to
lash home from 20 yards. He thereby became
the first QPR player to score four times in a
game since the great Rodney Marsh.
In his match report in The Sun newspaper,
Steve Allan wrote: “Clive Allen last night hit
the goal trail again…and how. He blasted QPR
through to the fifth round of the FA Cup with
a superb four-goal show which devastated
poor Blackpool.”
broken into the QPR side…‘Peter
Hucker is of the stuff anti-heroes
are made. Not flash, not big
headed, one of the crowd. Only
he is now Rangers’ first team
keeper…It is saying something for
a young keeper to come out of
the blue into the side and for the
crowd not to show some panic,
even if the keeper is not showing
it himself…the Loft lifted him
when he was keeping at their end.
Certainly the defence don’t play
as if they have a new keeper
behind them…Given a good run,
young Peter could become a
bargain, and here to stay!
Meanwhile the crowd can boost
How did you get scouted?
I was at Brentford for five years before the academy was closed
down. QPR offered me a chance straight away, along with other
clubs, but I chose QPR.
Have you always played the same position?
I have always played either centre mid or on the wing. But
recently I suffered a long-term back injury and have been out
for six months. I’m on the road to recovery now though and
hopefully I’ll be back in the near future.
What’s the highlight of your career to date?
My international debut for Kosovo. It was at an U15 UEFA
tournament against Estonia, Albania and Kazakhstan. We won
the tournament, beating Albania 1-0 in the final. The feeling of
winning was great! I also got the most assists in the tournament
(4) and scored my first ever direct free-kick! Unfortunately, due
to injury, I’ve not been able to attend any other camps.
Who’s your favourite player or inspiration?
I’ve got two – Philippe Coutinho and Kevin De Bruyne because
I play like a combination of both. I try to take bits of their game
and add them to mine, with Coutinho’s creativity and De
Bruyne’s ability to pick out a pass.
Which of your team-mates is most likely to become a coach
or manager one day?
I see Henry Hawkins as a future manager because he is a good
leader. He leads by example on and off the pitch.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
I hope to be playing in the Premier League and representing my
country regularly.
TRINIDAD &
TOBAGO
AN INTERNATIONAL friendly
fixture between Iceland
and Trinidad & Tobago was
staged at Loftus Road on
Tuesday 28th February 2006.
The evening match attracted
a crowd of 7,980, with the
T&T fans vastly outnumbering
those supporting Iceland.
T&T won the game 2-0 – with
both goals scored by former
Premier League star Dwight
Yorke, who played for Sydney
FC in Australia at the time.
In a match report in The
Guardian newspaper, Simon
Burnton wrote: “Carnival
was celebrated in Trinidad
& Tobago yesterday and
last night their fans and
footballers succeeded in
bringing something of the
same to west London, where
two goals from Dwight Yorke
saw them dance to victory
over Iceland.
“The T&T coach Leo
Beenhakker seemed to be
the only one unmoved by the
performance, however. ‘I’m
very happy with the result,’ he
said later, ‘but I think I can ask
much more of the players.’
“For all the Dutchman’s
coolness, his team were
impressive and even if Sven-
Goran Eriksson is unlikely to
enough talent and tactical
discipline to suggest that they
will be an asset to the event.
“So too will their supporters,
who arrived as if determined
to pretend that they were in
sunny Port of Spain rather
than icy Shepherd’s Bush,
the streets around the
ground humming to a party
fuelled by beating drums
and barbecuing meat. ‘I think
we will bring a lot of colour,
on and off the pitch,’ the
goalkeeper Shaka Hislop said
later. ‘Everyone’s very excited
about our prospects.’
“The carnival atmosphere
continued inside too where,
to a constant musical
accompaniment, T&T warmed
to their unfamiliar role of
match favourites by throwing
themselves forward from the
first whistle. With a population
of only 1.1m, they may be one
of the smallest countries ever
to have qualified for the World
Cup, but last night they were
much the mightier of the
two sides.
“Iceland’s manager Eyjolfur
Sverrisson can choose from
only 296,737 people and
his team is ranked 45 places
behind T&T in 96th. They
justified such a ranking during
a World Cup qualification
campaign that was as
miserable as Trinidad’s was
memorable. Their confidence
may have been low last night
but it seemed their motivation
was too as they played as if
afraid of pooping a party.
“Dundee United’s winger Collin
Samuel had already caught the
eye before he skipped down
the left wing and sent in a
10th-minute cross which was
headed out as far as Yorke,
who had time to control before
shooting into the top corner
from 15 yards.
“With T&T deservedly ahead,
the party continued at halftime
with the appearance of
a group of female dancers
whose attire was not
altogether appropriate for
February in England. Their
team, however, were not
distracted and Avery John,
impressive at left-back, soon
overlapped well and Stern
John was bundled over by
Ivar Ingimarsson as he fought
to reach the cross. Little
about Yorke appears to have
changed since he
left for Australia,
and his cheeky
chipped penalty
was familiar to
everyone except
the flummoxed
substitute
goalkeeper Dadi
Larusson.”
TONY INCENZO RECALLS SOME WEIRD AND
WONDERFUL STORIES...
QPR’S OLDEST
I WAS interested by the fact that David
Marshall’s debut for Rangers against West
Bromwich Albion earlier this month came at
the age of 36 years and 316 days. That puts him
third in our list of all-time oldest debutants.
The second oldest was Roy Bentley, who
made his first QPR appearance aged 37 years
and 94 days.
Born in Bristol on 17th May 1924, Bentley had an
excellent career at Newcastle United, Chelsea
and Fulham. Originally playing as a striker,
he won 12 full England caps and scored nine
international goals.
Bentley moved from Craven Cottage to join
QPR in June 1961. By this stage, he had become
a defender and he made his debut for us on
19th August that year in our 3-0 home win over
Brentford on the opening day of the Division
Three season.
After 52 appearances here at Rangers, Bentley
moved on to become manager of Reading in
1963. He later had a spell as Swansea’s boss
before returning to Reading as club secretary.
Bentley died on 20th April 2018, aged 93.
Meanwhile, QPR’s all-time oldest debutant was
Wales international goalkeeper Paul Jones at the
age of 38 years and 300 days.
Jones, who was born in Chirk, North Wales, on
18th April 1967, signed for QPR in 2006 after
being released by Wolverhampton Wanderers.
His debut came in our 1-0 home win over Millwall
in the Championship on 11th February and he
stayed at Loftus Road until May 2007. Jones
made a total of 26 appearances for us and won
five Welsh caps as a QPR player.
|| MEMORY LANE||
AS A SPORTS JOURNALIST WITH THE EALING GAZETTE,
MIKE DONOVAN WAS A MAINSTAY OF THE LOFTUS ROAD
PRESS BOX IN THE 1970S AND 1980S. IN EACH MATCHDAY
PROGRAMME, HE LOOKS BACK ON THOSE UNFORGETTABLE
DAYS OF COVERING QUEENS PARK RANGERS…
AS Mike Myers said, in the
guise of the amateur cable
TV presenter in the comedy
film Wayne’s World, I’m feeling
saucy (in the cheeky sense).
It’s midwinter, mid-season.
When warmth is traditionally
gained in a cold draughty
press box with about five
layers, gloves and a thermal
beanie hat.
But my mischievous sense
of timing thought it might
be fun to feature the time
I completed a pre-season
training session with Queens
Park Rangers when the
summer sun was blazing
down. At best, it would
remind us of the time of year
associated more with T-shirts
than over-overcoats.
It was August 1983 and
Terry Venables’ Rangers had
just been promoted to the
top flight (something Mark
Warburton’s current troops
are hoping to emulate this
term, of course).
I recall being mistaken for a
member of the playing staff
by a reporter – who should
have gone to Specsavers –
asking Venables the identity
of his new signing in reference
to this correspondent.
And the players goodnaturedly
taking the rise out
of me and my lame efforts
to join in a session taken
by assistant manager Allan
Harris – who sadly passed
away in November 2017 –
and youth team manager
Frank McLintock, the former
QPR captain.
I attempted exercises, runs,
sprints, drills and a practice
match over two hours,
resplendent in a proper
QPR training kit, although
the professional look was
diluted when you looked at
my footwear: a pair of my own
Dunlop Green Flash pumps.
Also, I provoked subdued
giggling after drinking water
from a pitchside tap as I
staggered off the field at
the end. As Barry McKenzie,
the cartoon figment of
comedian and erstwhile
Edna Everage impersonator
Barry Humphries’ fertile
imagination, might have
put it, I ‘chundered’ over the
otherwise pristine, newlymown
grass.
Older readers might
remember my account of
the experience being published
in the Rangers programme
after its appearance in the
Ealing Gazette.
But the younger among the
Super Hoops following would
be unlikely to have seen the
feature.
So for them and the more
senior citizens whose
memories are not what they
once were, I have copied a
few extracts of my
experiences that day.
I was nervous and
afraid of looking foolish
as I joined the players at
10am at the training
ground in Birkbeck
Avenue, Greenford
I wrote: “The spontaneous
applause I received from
QPR’s players was the
perfect end to two hours of
torture. Every muscle ached
and I was sick with exhaustion
after what they called ‘a little
light training’.
“Rangers boss Terry Venables
made me feel even better
as he strolled across,
scarcely able to contain his
amusement and told me, ‘I’ve
just been speaking to a top
football reporter and he asked
me who my new signing was’.
“I was nervous and afraid
of looking foolish as I joined
the players at 10am at the
training ground in Birkbeck
Avenue, Greenford.
“Reserve and youth manager
Frank McLintock set us off
on a light jog and I followed
goalkeeper Peter Hucker,
who was doing a Superman
impersonation.
“A back-breaking variety
of warm-up exercises to
loosen leg, arm, stomach and
back muscles followed. My
attempts at press-ups had
already caused a few sniggers
so I was dreading the ‘squares’
section. … Allan Harris called
DAVE
MACKAY
Football’s
Braveheart
The
Authorised
Biography
Forewords by Derek Mackay and Denis Law
out a number of a square
marked on the pitch and
we had to run to it. Last man
there gets 10 press-ups. My
slim chances of escaping the
penalty vanished when
Glenn Roeder ‘bodychecked’
me. My protests were
drowned in laughter.
“I was more than a little
warmed up by the time
Harris announced a practice
match. I lined up in defence,
comforted by the presence
of skipper Terry Fenwick
(who was to face Diego
Maradona in the 1986 World
Cup for England, incidentally)
and Steve Wicks, with Gary
Waddock, Simon Stainrod and
Mike Flanagan ahead. Against
us were jet-heeled Clive
Allen, Wayne Fereday, Roeder,
Warren Neill, Ian Dawes and
latest England international
John Gregory.
“Fenwick was long suffering,
telling me when to push up
or get goalside. Wicks was
unimpressed and sent me
into midfield. There I was,
totally bemused by the pace
and skill of it all. I could run as
fast as some but their speed
of thought and quickness off
the mark left me trailing by
half a yard. Allan Harris saw
me struggling and sent Bob
Hazell on as a substitute.
“It was the first and
probably last (it was!) time
I’ll train with a top division
club, but one remark from
Glenn Roeder afterwards
proved it was worth it.
“He told me: ‘You did quite
well. A lot of media men
criticise us, so do the fans,
without knowing what it’s
really like. Now you’ve got
a rough idea and you can
criticise from experience’.”
I’ll always be grateful for those
remarks from a lovely guy with
whom I kept in touch. I wish
I could have ghost-written
his autobiography as was
planned but shelved. Who
knows, there might have been
a mention of the day I trained
with the Super Hoops?!
Mike Donovan is an author
and award-winning journalist.
He produced Queens Park
the Bush and was taken to
Cooke’s Pie and Mash shop in
dad, attended concerts at the
DEMI Edwards’ double, coupled with goals from
Vicky Grieve and Melanie Hall, earned Rangers
a third consecutive victory as they continued
their impressive start to 2022.
Defender Grieve set the ball rolling at St Neots
Town, scoring the visitors’ opening goal in the
12th minute.
Edwards made it 2-0 with her first of the
afternoon just before the half-hour mark and
the Super Hoops built on their advantage
during the second period.
A second goal for Edwards, slotted neatly into
the Cambridge net in the 61st minute, took
Steve Quashie’s side further ahead.
Top scorer Hall rounded off the victory with
Rangers’ fourth goal 12 minutes later, ensuring
that they climbed to fifth place in the FA
Women’s National League table.
Rangers return to action on Sunday when they
travel to Harlow Town Ladies (kick-off 2pm).
TRUST DELIVERS SUCCESSFUL NCS SCHEME
ALMOST 100 young people took part in a twoweek
National Citizen Service programme in
conjunction with the QPR in the Community
Trust College Academy.
The academy is a full-time time football and
education programme for players aged 16-19,
enabling them to combine their development
with studying for BTEC Level 1, 2 or 3 sports
qualifications.
Based at the Middlesex FA headquarters
in Rectory Park, Northolt and Stubbers
Adventure Centre, Upminster, the Trust’s
NCS team led a variety of engaging outdoor
activities and workshops.
Outdoor events included rock climbing, laser
tag, archery and team-building exercises, while
there were workshops on first aid training,
careers after football and understanding sport
psychology.
Ray Paul, the founder of BBC Radio 1Xtra, was
among the guest speakers who provided the
participants with an insight into potential
careers after leaving education.
The young people were also given the
opportunity to devise their own social action
projects, which included litter picking around
Rectory Park, fixing the nets of their goalposts
and helping maintain the facilities around them.
Columnist
THE JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER PENS HIS
LATEST COLUMN…
I
’ve been home for about an hour after
attending the Swansea game.
Naturally, I’m disappointed that we didn’t win,
but as one QPR employee mentioned on Twitter
– if we’d drawn at Coventry and beaten Swansea
we’d all be in a different mood after four points
from two games than perhaps we are right now.
The reality is that results often go against
expectation in the Championship. If that wasn’t
the case, we would surely have taken more
than just two points from nine available against
Reading, Peterborough and Barnsley this
season.
Those clubs currently make up three of the
bottom four – yet even Reading conceding 51
goals, the second highest in the division, is no
guarantee of a hatful of goals for us today.
Swansea were 17th in the table ahead of their
visit, with three games in hand on some of the
sides above them. There was every incentive
for them to go for the win, yet throughout the
game they had the look of a team who came for
the draw.
They doubled up on Chris Willock, got men
behind the ball and rode their luck at times.
Don’t forget, we still have a major creative
influence in Ilias Chair playing for Morocco at
AFCON and he’ll be there until Sunday at least.
Back in August, I didn’t think we had the strength
in depth to mount a challenge for automatic
promotion. As we move towards the final three
months of the season, we’re doing fine.
It was my first trip to QPR since the
Bournemouth game last month. It was lovely to
see the usual gang in W12 and the pies looked
so good I nearly put a couple in my pocket for
the tube ride home.
It was also great to see Dion Sanderson in
main reception before the game following
the announcement of his loan from Wolves.
He impressed me while playing against us for
Birmingham earlier in the season. Let’s make
him welcome.
