PP
MANAGER WANTS
BELIEF TO INCREASE
Manager Ryan Lowe wants his side to believe in what they want to achieve
after ending West Bromwich Albion’s unbeaten home run on Wednesday night.
Reflecting on Wednesday night, I was
obviously pleased - it was a fantastic
performance. I thought the lads took to the
game plan really well and scored some good
goals and to come away from West Brom with three
points and a clean sheet is really pleasing.
Every single one of the players stuck to the game
plan. We worked some good openings, we turned
them a little bit earlier than normal and we felt if
we’d get the ball up the top end of the pitch, we’d get
chances. We countered them a couple of times and
the two goals we scored were fantastic. To limit West
Brom to no shots on target just shows that we were
definitely worthy of the three points.
We should have had a penalty when Emil was brought
down in the first half. I’ve seen it again and it’s a
stonewall penalty and we have had quite a number of
those already while I have been here.
I thought we were solid from back to front, resolute,
right the way through the pitch, and we were
definitely worthy of the first goal going in at halftime,
a good time to score.
We have brought in Cameron Archer and I would
like to thank Stevie and Aston Villa for their help on
getting this done. He had only been in for two days
and he showed what he is about. I’ve monitored him
for a while and it’s a coup for us, because there
were plenty of other clubs after him and I knew at
some point we’d get him on the pitch and we knew at
some point he’d get an opportunity.
We’ve said to the group to start believing where we
want to try and get to. We respect West Brom and
the teams we face, but you can’t just go to those
places and fear the opposition, you’ve got to respect
them, but you can’t fear them. You’ve got to go toeto-toe
with them. I said to the group before the game
that sometimes those places can be intimidating to
WE’VE SAID TO THE
GROUP TO START BELIEVING
WHERE WE WANT TO TRY
AND GET TO.
come, but I don’t want my lads to feel that. I want
them to go out there, they’re good footballers, and
showcase what they’re about. They certainly did that
on Wednesday.
The fans were on superb form too - it was brilliant.
I said to the lads on the touchline ‘the fans haven’t
stopped singing!’. That’s credit to you, because that’s
what we want.
You can see the work we’re doing and that
the results that are coming; you’ve seen the
performances and can see that the lads are working
a bit different than they used to and they’re starting
to believe and so are the you and rightly so.
We want to try and finish as high as we possibly can
in the division, we never get too high and we never
get too low, but when we’re putting on performances
and the fans are travelling in their numbers, we’ve
got to make sure we send them home happy and
that’s what we did at West Brom.
I’d like to welcome Nigel and his side to Deepdale
today, we are looking forward to again showing
everyone what we are about, so please get behind
the lads once again.
Enjoy the game.
PLAYER INTERVIEW
PP
PATRICK FEELS
THE LOVE
Popular German centre half Patrick Bauer admits he appreciates the support he gets
from the terraces.
The North End No.5 recently put pen to paper on
a new deal until the summer of 2024, news that
received virtually universal positive responses
from the Lilywhites faithful.
And the songs from the stands and the messages on social
media are certainly helping get the best out of the defender,
as he told The One And Only.
“I signed a contract and I am really happy that the
supporters are happy as well,” said Pat. “I appreciate it a lot
and I feel the love from them in the games and it makes me
really confident and comfortable and I enjoy it.”
Getting the deal sorted, he explained, was very important
for him, but with his wife and daughter settled in the area, it
was an easy decision; although he is hoping he can get home
at the end of the current campaign.
“You don’t want the negotiations and stuff to distract
yourself, but it is easier said than done,” he continued. “It
distracts you a little bit, because you know what is going on,
but you are relieved when it is sorted and then you can fully
focus on your football.
“I have never made a secret of the fact that we feel very
comfortable here, at the club and in the area. I spoke to my
family about it and they are really happy here and it was an
easy decision for me to sign a new contract.
“My family are all vaccinated, so there is not a big issue
in them coming over. It is now not just about sitting on a
plane and travelling to a new country though, it is about all
the documents you need to fill in; so, it is a little bit more
stressful. That is the same for me going over to Germany,
but that’s how it is now and hopefully, after the season, I will
have time to go to Germany again.
“It was July 2020 I was last there, so by the time we are off
in the summer it will be nearly two years since I have been
in Germany, so I am looking forward to going home.”
I FEEL THE LOVE FROM
[THE FANS]… IT MAKES
ME REALLY CONFIDENT
AND COMFORTABLE AND I
ENJOY IT.
The arrival of the new manager has got everyone on their
toes, but the former Charlton man has been impressed by
what he has seen so far: “Preston North End is definitely
going in the right direction. The manager and his assistants
have been really good so far.
“Marshy [Mike Marsh] has worked at a few sides that
have got promoted to the Premier League, so on the
training pitches we try to get better and better every
day and hopefully we can get on a winning streak
and move up the table and have a successful end
to the season.”
Today’s opponents are a team that Patrick scored
against the last time he lined up against them at
Deepdale with supporters in the stadium, a game he
remembers well.
“I think the game ended 3-3. It was good to score, because
we were behind a few times in that game, but we would have
liked to have won the game.
“Normally, if you score three goals at home, you should win
the game, so it was disappointing, but we came back from
being behind three times, so we were happy with draw in
the end and we are looking forward to welcoming Bristol at
the weekend,” he added.
THE BIG INTERVIEW
Greg Cunningham
Greg Loving
Early Days Of
Fatherhood
While it’s been all change at Preston North End in recent months, it’s also been
a busy period away from football for Greg Cunningham, with the Irishman
becoming a father in October 2021.
Three months on from the birth of his
daughter Dacey, Greg admits he’s still
learning, but also embracing every moment
as it comes.
Greg told The One And Only: “It’s been amazing.
Cathriona knows how important football is, so she’s
really taken on a lot of the workload and I do as much
as I can when I’m at home.
“I’m obviously having to make sure I’m getting enough
sleep and eating enough, and she’s been absolutely
great on that front.
“It’s life-changing, it really is. I don’t think you can
really be prepared for something like that, but it’s been
amazing.”
The life of a footballer of course has a lot of perks, but
it also comes with its sacrifices, like spending a lot of
time away from home.
However, for Greg, he lives within a short distance of
Euxton, so having his partner and newborn to return
home to after a day’s training is always something to
look forward to.
“It’s good because there’s not much travel,” he said.
“Fortunately, it’s not one of those where we live a
couple of hours away and after a tough day I’ll stay
down here, so with it being so close to the training
ground I can get back and resume my duties as a
father!
“I think I’ve got a bit of a laid back attitude on things
and I suppose through my line of work you adapt to
situations as they come.
“I just try not to overthink things. We prepared as well
as we could for the arrival and as Dacey’s come we’ve
just cracked on and enjoyed every minute of it.
“She’s getting really big now, she’s just over three
months and those three months really have flown by.”
In his second spell at Preston North End, he is pleased
to be settled back in the area with his family in what he
feels is a true home from home back in Galway, Ireland.
It was only seven years ago, though, that his home was
down in Bristol, when the full back played for today’s
opponents between 2012 and 2015.
The move there came from Manchester City, who Greg
had joined as a teenager, but he inevitably knew he
would have to leave the Cityzens for the better of his
career, given the direction the club was heading in.
He said: “There was never going to be regular football
for me there and I wanted to progress my career, so
11

THE ONE AND ONLY
I knew I would have to step away, whether that was
another loan to play some games, or on a permanent
deal.
“I ended up going to Bristol City on a permanent
contract and I was there for three years.
“It’s a great club. I thank the Lansdown family for my
time there and I made many friends there that I still
keep in touch with today, so it’s a great place to live.
“There’s a lot of culture there and it was a nice city to
be a part of. It was a frustrating time on the pitch at
times, with relegation in the first season, but then to
leave with a promotion was a nice way to finish.”
That was in the 2014/15 League One campaign when the
Robins ran away with the division, finishing top on 99
points, while MK Dons and PNE also paved their way to
the Championship.
With the likes of Luke Ayling, Aden Flint and Aaron
Wilbraham as team-mates that season, Greg felt
promotion was always on the cards.
He said: “You look back at some of the players we
had in that squad and it was just a strong, strong
Championship team really.
“Steve Cotterill got us playing a system that suited
us and instilled a huge belief and togetherness in the
changing room.
“It was a good year for us. We got promoted and we
won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy that year as well, so
a successful season all in all.
“To get the club back to the Championship was kind of
the main reason why I stayed after we got relegated.”
IT’S MY HOME
AWAY FROM
HOME.
THE BIG INTERVIEW
A few months later, though, North End themselves were
looking to strengthen their squad and that’s when
manager at the time Simon Grayson made contact with
the left-sided defender, who would go on to join the
group at their training camp north of the border in
Scotland.
Greg seamlessly settled in his new side and
would go on to prove himself as one of the
division’s top defenders, before earning a
move to the Premier League with Cardiff City
in 2018.
Fast forward two and a half years and the Irishman
was back at Deepdale, initially on loan, before earning
a contract until the summer of 2023.
“I really do love it here,” he admitted. “It’s my home
away from home.
“I think the club when I first joined really warmed
me. From the boys to the staff, all the backroom staff,
the fans, everyone associated with the club – they’ve
always welcomed me.
“It felt special coming back this second time. I know
I’ve still got a lot to give, so I want to keep showing
what I can do and express myself as much as I can
on the pitch.
“Even when I’m not playing, off the pitch I want to help
the boys and give back to this club which has given so
much to me.”
I WANT TO HELP THE
BOYS AND GIVE BACK TO
THIS CLUB...
Now under new manager Ryan Lowe, PNE are learning
to play a different way, with the Liverpudlian looking to
bring his own style to the club.
It’s not just on the pitch that things are looking to be
changed, though, with several members of the squad
saying that the addition of the gaffer and first team
coach Mike Marsh has thrown a fresh batch of belief in
to the players.
Greg added: “It’s coming game on game. The manager’s
really instilled the way he wants us to play and
definitely the belief and confidence in what’s in this
dressing room.
“In the back of your mind every season there’s always
the goal of getting promotion, but I’ve always been
one for taking each day as it comes because you don’t
know what’s around the corner.
“There’s some big games coming up, some tough games,
so we just need to concentrate on the task at hand.
“That’s always been my motto because if you look too
far ahead you lose concentration on what’s coming
next and that’s where you can slip up.”
PREVIEW
Despite a loyal support and the
recent form of striker Andreas
Weimann, Bristol City will be
disappointed they find themselves
hovering towards the lower third of
the Championship table.
Weimann, an Austrian international
forward, has scored an impressive
13 goals this season at the time of
writing, while also contributing four
assists.
A leaky defence, however, has caused
the south west club to concede far
more than they put in at the other end.
Manager Nigel Pearson has
unfortunately suffered many setbacks
during his spell in charge this season.
The absence of centre back Nathan
Baker, having faced two concussions
this season, means that Pearson has
been limited in defensive rotation.
This has proven costly, as a heavy 6-2
defeat to Fulham came earlier this
January.
They’ve recently defeated Severnside
rivals Cardiff City, though, a result
which no doubt gave the whole club
a boost.
Bristol City, on the whole, have paid
the price for inconsistency so far this
term, having not achieved back-toback
league victories all season long
as of last weekend.
In the reverse fixture between PNE
and the side from Ashton Gate in
September, North End were held to
a frustrating 0-0 stalemate, with
Sean Maguire coming closest for the
Lilywhites, striking the underside of
the bar in the first half.

Tomáš Kalas
A former Chelsea prospect, Bristol City reached an
agreement in July 2019 for a club-record fee for his
services. Kalas signed for Chelsea in 2010, before being
loaned out to fellow English clubs Middlesbrough and
Fulham, earning promotion to the Premier League with
both. The centre back arrived in Bristol originally on
loan in 2018, instantly becoming a fan favourite with his
talent and grit. Once the deal turned permanent, though,
he was unfortunately made to spend the majority of the
Robins’ 2019/20 season on the sidelines, having picked
up an injury. This time around, though, he has played in
all but one game of the current season so far, proving to
be a reliable and regular starter under manager Nigel
Pearson’s regime.
At the time of writing, Max O’Leary is being given the nod
ahead of club captain and No.1 goalkeeper Daniel Bentley
at the moment. It is currently unknown whether Bentley
will stay on the sidelines, but all signs point to manager
Nigel Pearson placing his trust in the Irish ‘keeper
instead. A product of Bristol City’s Academy, O’Leary was
given first team action in 2016, facing West Bromwich
Albion in the FA Cup third round. Multiple loan spells
to Kidderminster Harriers, Bath City and Shrewsbury
Town all provided the ‘keeper with valuable experience
to bring back to the Robins. He has now made over 30
appearances for City.
Having featured 30 times for PNE between 2010 and 2011,
midfielder Matty James could make his first appearance
at Deepdale for an opposition team this afternoon.
The now 30-year-old, joined North End on loan from
Manchester United and showed his promise over his two
spells with the club, with his most notable memory being
a stunning strike against Nottingham Forest. He didn’t
end up making an appearance for parent club United,
but would go on to achieve success at Leicester City,
helping them to a Championship trophy in 2014. Injury
unfortunately meant he missed their Premier League
winning campaign, but he’s now found his fitness at
Ashton Gate.
Proving to have been a key signing for the Robins,
2020/21 campaign, the young defender kept 12 clean
PFA League One team of the year and Sky Bet League
The Austrian attacker caught the eye of Aston Villa at
the age of just 16, prompting them to sign him from
Rapid Vienna. After eight years at Villa and earning his
full league debut in 2010, Weimann made the switch to
nearby Derby County. With the Rams, he went out on loan
to Wolves, before returning to score five goals from 43
appearances. Since moving to Ashton Gate in July 2018,
he has made around 130 appearances, with 33 goals
and 16 assists to his name. An essential part of manager
Nigel Pearson’s set-up, Weimann is yet to miss a game in
the 2021/22 Championship season at the time of writing,
playing the full 90 in each one. This has been rewarded
with an impressive 13 goals and four assists already, with
plenty more matches to add to it.
THE ONE AND ONLY
LAST FIVE
MANAGERS
SEAN O’DRISCOLL // JANUARY 2013 TO NOVEMBER 2013 // IRISH
O’Driscoll became Bristol City’s new manager on a
12-month rolling contract in January 2013, with the club
sat bottom of the Championship. His first win as manager
came on 26th January 2013 in a 2-1 victory over Ipswich
Town, but seven defeats and two draws from City’s last
nine games meant they were relegated to League One.
Bristol City parted company with O’Driscoll in November,
with no wins and five losses at the start of the new season.
THE BOSS
NIGEL PEARSON
FEBRUARY 2021 TO PRESENT
ENGLISH
In February 2021, Nigel Pearson
was appointed manager of
Bristol City on a contract until
the end of the season. Despite
finishing 19th, Pearson signed
a three-year extension of his
contract in April 2021. The
former Watford boss was
unable to prevent the Hornets’
inevitable relegation from
the 2019/20 Premier League,
but famously defeated league
leaders Liverpool 3-0, the first
time in 44 games that Liverpool
had lost in the league. So far
with Bristol City this season
though, Pearson has struggled
to climb out of mid-table. There
have been highs of a 2-1 victory
away to Cardiff, but also the
disappointment of a 6-2 defeat
to Fulham.
STEVE COTTERILL // DECEMBER 2013 TO JANUARY 2016 // ENGLISH
In December 2013, Steve Cotterill took charge of Bristol
City. His first season ended in 12th place in League One,
but the next would bring incredible success. He guided
the Robins to the Football League Trophy, defeating Walsall
2-0 at Wembley, and they then finished as League One
champions with a club record of 99 points. Cotterill would
struggle in the Championship, though, due to a lack of
investment, and was dismissed in January 2016, only 256
days after bringing them back up.
LEE JOHNSON // FEBRUARY 2016 TO JULY 2020 // ENGLISH
Johnson was appointed at Bristol City in February 2016,
once again needing to rescue the Robins from relegation.
He did that, finishing 18th and then 17th in the next
campaign. Under his leadership, Bristol City went to the
2017/18 EFL Cup semi-finals, having already defeated
Manchester United. He would lose this game 5-3 to the
eventual champions Manchester City, but gained public
praise from Pep Guardiola. 11th and eighth-placed finishes
followed, but in July 2020, Johnson was sacked.
DEAN HOLDEN // AUGUST 2020 TO FEBRUARY 2021 // ENGLISH
Lee Johnson’s assistant manager Dean Holden took the
full-time role in August 2020. Holden was originally the
caretaker following Johnson’s dismissal, but quickly
impressed the board. However, just six months later,
Bristol City were sat 13th in the Championship and
had lost six successive matches in all competitions.
A 2-0 loss to Reading prompted Holden’s sacking in
February 2021.
PRESTON NORTH END’S
TOP FLIGHT DECADE
By Ian Rigby
CHARLIE
WAYMAN
Born: Chilton, County Durham, 16th May 1922
Died: Bishop Auckland, 26th February 2006
Signed from: Southampton, 6th September 1950
Transferred to: Middlesbrough, 24th September 1954
Charlie Wayman was a name that became synonymous
with the art of goalscoring.
The young miner played his early football locally for
Chilton Colliery and Spennymoor United before being
signed by Newcastle United in 1941. He had a short stint
of National Service duty with the Royal Navy, but because
of his background he was soon back home employed in
essential pit work. This meant more time playing football
for Newcastle for whom he scored 31 goals in 60 wartime
games, mainly as their inside left (No.10 shirt). He was
switched to centre forward when the Magpies signed
Len Shackleton and they soon clicked as a partnership,
once scoring ten goals between them as Newcastle United
beat Newport County 13-0 in a second division league
game. Despite his size, just under 5ft 6in, he was a quick,
elusive, brave player with an obvious eye for goal. He fell
out with management over an FA Cup final selection – or
non-selection as it was – and was soon on his way from
Newcastle, moving down south to Southampton for £10,000.
He had scored 36 goals for Newcastle in just 52 games
and was soon knocking them in for the Saints. With over
70 league goals in just two-and-a-half seasons, including
a five-goal haul against Leicester City, he was always a
potential target for other clubs.
In 1950, Preston North End wanted a rapid return to the
top flight and Charlie, the pint-sized goal predator, became
their number one target. He was soon bought for £10,000
with North End’s Eddy Brown going to Southampton in
part exchange. It turned out to be a good move for both
players. How much would you have to pay for a quality
striker nowadays who had scored 109 league goals in
1951 to 1961
just four seasons? Charlie was the answer to North End’s
quest for first division football as he scored an impressive
27 times for the Lilywhites on their way to winning the
second division championship in 1951. His best individual
performance saw him take all four goals in the 4-1 away
win at Queens Park Rangers on Christmas Day 1950. He
was Preston North End’s top scorer over the following
three seasons, scoring 24, 26 and 32 goals. During the
1954 FA Cup run, he scored in every round including the
Final itself. The next season started well for him too as he
bagged a hat-trick on the opening day of the new season
against Manchester City, but quite bizarrely after just five
more games and six goals, he was quickly transferred to
Middlesbrough for just £8,000. What went on behind the
scenes will sadly remain a mystery.
THE ONE AND ONLY
Born In Preston,
Played For North End
by Mike Payne
During Preston North End’s 141 year history, over 100 first-team players have been born here, in
Preston, and in this series of articles I would like to feature a selection of those that went on to play
for the club. I have decided to choose them at random, as I want to reach across the various eras,
to highlight the different social and sporting periods in which they played the game. They all had one
thing in common though, and it was that they were so proud to represent their hometown team.
PROUD PLAYERS
FOR PROUD PRESTON
The name is Bond, Dickie Bond! One of North End’s
most famous players and one of the best of his
era. Believe it or not, his dad’s name was James,
with Dickie one of eight children, and one of four
footballing brothers. He came to Deepdale and
signed in the Preston Guild week of 1902, after
he had brought himself out of the army earlier
that summer. Not many North Enders score in
both of their opening two first team games, as
Dickie did, first against Bishop Auckland away in
the FA Cup, and then on his league debut against
Stockport County at home a week later. He was
quick, with fair ball control, a good centre and
quite a character on and off the field. In 1903/04,
PNE won the second division championship, with
Dickie making a dozen appearances, but he soon
established himself as the club’s best winger and
from then his football career took off.
Over the next two seasons, Dickie forged the
reputation as the best winger in the land. After
playing in an England trial match, as they did in
those days, he was given his first cap in February
1905, against Northern Ireland, a 1-1 draw played
at Middlesbrough. Dickie was the first North End
player capped by England for ten years, and he
went on to win four more caps whilst at Deepdale.
At the end of the 1905/06 season, PNE finished as
runners-up to league champions Liverpool, with
Dickie the leading scorer for the Lilywhites that
season with 17 goals. His career at Deepdale did
fade out a little over the next few seasons, not
helped by a collision with an Aston Villa goalkeeper
that left Bond with a badly twisted knee and forced
him to miss the bulk of the 1906/07 season. Upon
his return after injury, he never quite recaptured
the earlier form. In the end he managed 163 league
and FA Cup appearances for the club, scoring 37
goals, of which seven were penalties. At the end
of July 1909, Dickie crossed the Pennines to sign
46

HISTORICAL
for Bradford City. It was a move that revitalised
the winger’s career, so much so that he won three
more England caps to add to the five he won in
Preston. After an eventful war, Bond signed for
Blackburn in 1922, but after a short spell there and
another with Lancaster Town, he retired from the
game. When a list is raised of the top ten North
Enders, Dickie Bond’s name would be right up
there, such was his impact at the club in the era
he served.
One of the most irritating things for this football
historian is how many times the players christened
John were better known as Jack. John (Jack)
Charlton was a prime example. I have yet to find
out why this name change occurs? We have had
several here at Deepdale, and one of those was
a defender called John (Jack) Gornall. Gornall
was a player who was spotted as a youngster; in
fact he actually wrote to the club for a trial which
he was duly given. So, he arrived at North End as
a junior and worked his way through the youth
ranks. Initially a part-time player, he eventually
signed full-time in the summer of 1962. He could
play in any of the defensive positions and worked
his way up to become a very good player in the
Central League side. Unfortunately, the next step to
the first team was difficult at that
time, with good form shown by
the likes of George Ross, Willie
Cunningham and Tony Singleton
all proving an obstacle to the
22-year-old’s football progress.
Gornall did finally earn a debut,
in a 2-1 defeat at Scunthorpe
back in April 1962. He did then
stay another 18 months at
the club, adding just three
more appearances before
his contract was mutually
terminated by North End
in January 1964. Further
spells of football followed
with Wigan Athletic and
Leyland Motors before
he finished as a player.
He does have one claim
to fame, though, as he
was the only Preston
North End first teamer
to have been born
in 1941.
Another John/Jack completes my line-up today.
John (Jack) Holland also served in the First World
War, and both at school in Preston, and during
his army days, he realised he had some football
talent. However, he arrived at Deepdale in unusual
circumstances. In 1919, the country was hit by a
national strike, and Jack
Holland played in a match
held at Deepdale to try and
raise funds for those affected
by the hardships of the strike.
It was here that North End
recognised his footballing ability
and offered him the chance to
sign for the club. He was taken
on first as an amateur and then
signed as a professional in May
1920. Once again, established
pros, such as Frank Jefferis and
Roland Woodhouse, who played in
his inside forward position, made it
hard for the player to break into the
first team. He did eventually manage
eight league and cup appearances
before he moved on to serve a
number of clubs including Swansea,
Wrexham and Crewe, amongst others.
He was still playing in 1932, after nearly
150 league games for his various clubs.
48

HISTORICAL
Rob Edwards
Rob Edwards is a very fitting choice to be included in this week’s edition of In That
Number, given that he also spent a lot of time with Bristol City. After making over
250 appearances for the Robins, Welsh international Edwards joined PNE under
David Moyes in 1999. More of a midfielder on his arrival, Edwards would go on to
be used mainly as a full back, but that didn’t stop him coming out of his first season
at Deepdale with a league winners medal as PNE made it in to the first division. His
role remained just as important as North End navigated life back in the second tier,
before he moved on to a team down the M55 in 2004.
Simon Whaley
There’s not many that could argue with the ability of Simon Whaley when he was
at the top of his game. On his day, the winger could light up any game with a bit of
magic, which he proved on a number of occasions during his three-year stay at
Deepdale. He arrived from Bury, making a two-division jump, to work under Billy
Davies. There was no sign of struggle, though, with the youngster settling nicely into
life in the Championship and he enjoyed many good memories for PNE, with a late
winner against local rivals Burnley one of the stand outs. His last appearance wasn’t
a bad one either, bowing out in the dramatic 2-1 victory over QPR which earned PNE a
place in the Play-Offs.
Calum Woods
Calum Woods reunited with former boss Simon Grayson when he joined Preston
North End in 2014, with the pair having previously worked together at Huddersfield
Town. The full back, who could operate on either side, would actually only go on to
feature in 18 regular league games in his debut season in a North End shirt, but he
played in all three of the Play-Off matches, including the full 90 minutes at Wembley
as the Lilywhites comfortably sealed promotion. Woods was a committed, versatile,
tough-tackling full back and went on to play a part in the Championship, but with the
likes of Greg Cunningham and Darnell Fisher coming through the door, game time
would eventually become limited and Woods moved on after four and a half years.
@MOHAMMADVAHALUWALA
WHAT POSITION DID YOU
PLAY AT YOUTH LEVEL?
I started out as a winger and then
after that I started playing in a sort
of ten role. Then I moved into the
number six and eight before moving
into the right back role, so a variety
really!
@BENY_PR5 WHO’S YOUR
BEST MATE AT NORTH END?
I spent a lot of time with Josh Harrop
when I was injured, so I’d say him.
@FINLAYBAMBER HOW
DID YOU FIND THE
TRANSITION FROM LIVING
IN THE US TO THE UK?
It was alright to be honest. I think
I adjusted quite well. I was kind
of used to being away from home,
it was obviously different moving
country though. I made a couple of
good friends who took me in and
looked after me so that definitely
helped.
@MACTHEMACDADDY
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE
ANIME?
It would have to be Naruto.
50

FAN FEATURE
@PNE.HUB WHO OR WHAT
INSPIRED YOU TO START
PLAYING FOOTBALL?
I don’t know really, I just started
playing when I was younger and it
kind of just stuck. My brother used to
play so that probably had something
to do with it. My Godbrother played
too for New York Red Bulls so I
wanted to follow that.
@PATRICKBAUER5 HAVE
YOU SORTED YOUR
VANGUARD LOADOUT?
No, I still haven’t!
@JORDAN_DENNETT_99
WHAT MADE PNE STAND
OUT WHEN YOU SIGNED
FOR THEM?
I knew the club’s good reputation and
I knew of a few different players that
had been here so it definitely stood
out as a place I recognised. When I
first moved to England I knew about
the club already.
@MDRC94 WHAT DOES
BISCUITS MEAN?
It’s a phrase they used to say in a
cartoon show I used to watch a lot
called Adventure Time.
@RUFC.HUB HOW
WAS YOUR TIME AT
ROTHERHAM?
It was good, I enjoyed it. I made some
great friends, the coaching staff
were really good there and it was a
good kickstart to my career.
PLAYER FEATURE
PNE’s Alan Browne picks the five people who he
would invite to his dream dinner party...
ROMESH RANGANATHAN
He probably has no business being at such
an elite table, but neither do I! He’s my
favourite comedian and would get a few
laughs so I’ll give him a seat.
MICHAEL JORDAN
He gets in there all day. He just seems
like a cool guy and would definitely
have all sorts of stories to tell.
PP
ROGER FEDERER
It was a toss up between him and
Tiger Woods to be honest, but
I think Rodge would bring a bit
more class to the table. He’s odds
on for best dressed.
ELON MUSK
I’ll throw him in the mixer as I’ll hopefully get
some investment tips and earn a few quid off him!
LEONARDO DICAPRIO
This choice speaks for itself
really. He has it all and he’s easily
the king of the table.
GAME
This season, members of our first team squad will be picking out specific games they have
played in which are particularly memorable to them or even helped to change the course
of their career.
3RD JANUARY 2022 // BET365 STADIUM
STOKE CITY 1
(WILMOT, 46)
PP
PRESTON NORTH END 2
(POTTS, 59; HUGHES, 81)
AS IT HAPPENED:
A late Andrew Hughes header sealed victory for PNE as they
came from behind to beat Stoke City in the opening fixture
of 2022.
Andrew Hughes talks us through the
most memorable game of his career
so far...
“I’d actually never scored the winning goal
in a game before in my career so the Stoke
game is definitely up there.
“Everything about that weekend was special. I
knew I was signing a new contract, obviously
it hadn’t been announced at that point, but
it was just the perfect game to go in to and
come out having scored the winning goal.
“With the goal, I just found myself free in
the box. Whitey [Ben Whiteman] clipped one
in there from a corner, I managed to get my
head to it and I think the ‘keeper got a hand to
it, but fortunately it went in.
“It was class really, in front of the away end,
the timing of the goal, just everything about it
was great. A magical moment.”
ACADEMY REVIEW
TUESDAY 18TH JANUARY // HILLSBOROUGH
SHEFF WEDS U19s 1
(DAVIDSON, 42)
PP
PNE U19s 0
-
Preston North End U18s were made to rue missed chances
after a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday saw them exit the
FA Youth Cup.
The Owls scored the only goal of the game on 40 minutes
directly from a corner that ’keeper James Pradic was unable
to punch to safety.
By that point, North End had already spurned two golden
opportunities to take the lead and were frustrated in their
attempts to find an equaliser in the second half.
Nick Harrison’s side had been flying in the league, coming off
the back of a 4-0 demolition of Fleetwood Town at the weekend.
It was an almost entirely different side that started at
Hillsborough with Pradic starting between the sticks, with a
back three of Teddy Mfuni, Harry Nevin and Joe Blanchard
ahead of him, while Josh Seary, Mikey O’Neill, Lewis Leigh,
Noah Mawene and Jacob Slater made up the midfield, behind a
forward pairing of Finlay Cross-Adair and Vaughn Green.
It was a scrappy start to the match with both sides failing to
find a rhythm in front of the watching South Yorkshire crowd.
Each team tested the opposing goalkeepers with speculative
shots around the 15 minute mark before PNE created one of
their best chances of the match.
Cross-Adair was fed down the right flank and took on his
man, before firing the ball across goal and O’Neill was there to
connect but the attacking midfielder shot wide of the post.
They carved out a similar opportunity 12 minutes later, only
this time it was Cross-Adair’s turn to drag the strike wide
from close range.
Those misses came back to bite the Lilywhites when, five
minutes before half-time, Pradic was caught out by the corner
from the left and Wednesday were in front against the run of
the play.
North End looked set to continue to be on top early in the
second half when Seary fired over the bar from the right side
on 53 minutes.
But the Owls began to create chances themselves with striker
Bailey Cadamarteri coming close with a shot that went just
wide five minutes after Seary’s effort.
On 66 minutes, O’Neill broke free of the Wednesday backline
but was pushed wide by the defender and it was a routine stop
in the end for the ‘keeper. Cadamarteri then forced a more
difficult save out of Pradic three minutes later with a powerful
strike inside the area.
Still searching for a leveller, PNE made their only sub of the
evening on 81 minutes when Dana Amaral replaced Green, and
O’Neill was pushed further forward.
North End almost secured the equaliser in the dying embers
when Nevin’s downwards header from a corner prompted a
goalmouth scramble, but the hosts were able to clear their
lines and eventually held on for the win.
It had been a frustrating encounter for Nick Harrison’s side
who were justified in feeling a little hard done-by, but they can
now turn their focus back on to their league title charge.
PNE line-up: Pradic, Mfuni, Slater, Leigh, Nevin (c), Blanchard, Seary,
Mawene, Cross-Adair, O’Neill, Green (Amaral, 81).
Subs not used: Duggan, Best, Wallbank, Taylor, Pemberton, Nelson.
PNECET
HIRE NEW
STAFF UNDER
KICKSTART
SCHEME
Preston North End Community and Education Trust
[PNECET] has recruited four more Community
Sports Coaches as part of the government
Kickstart scheme, which provides paid
employment opportunities for 16 to 24-year-olds
accessing Universal Credit.
Jack Banks, Jacob Williams, Jordan Thomas and Martell
Elly have joined the Trust on six-month job placement roles,
allowing them to build their employability and personal skills
by supporting the delivery of PNECET provision.
Last year, Preston North End became one of 65 EFL clubs
to sign up to the Kickstart scheme, which is operated by
the Department for Work and Pensions, recruiting four
Community Sports Coaches in April, all of whom enjoyed
successful six-month stints.
The latest Kickstart members of staff – Jack, Jacob, Jordan
and Martell – have all been recruited within the last month
and made a strong impact during their first weeks in post.
During their time with PNECET, all four new staff members
will be mentored by a full-time staff member to develop
their coaching and interpersonal qualities, allowing them to
gain the confidence and knowledge to make positive strides
while seeking full-time employment.
Head of Education Liam Sealey said: “We’re really pleased
to have welcomed Jack, Jacob, Jordan and Martell to the
team and look forward to having them on board for the
forthcoming months.
“As the club’s official charity, we strive to improve
educational attainment and employability in our local
community to help people make positive changes in their
lives, and we’re confident that the Kickstart scheme
can benefit all of Jack, Jacob, Jordan and Martell in
numerous ways.
“Jack, Jacob, Jordan and Martell are all talented individuals
with many fantastic qualities. We’re sure they will add
significant value to our delivery for the forthcoming months
and hope to help them develop their skills further.”
Jack said: “I’m looking to build myself as a person, as a
coach, and also just get some more experience. I want to
build up my confidence, coaching ability, work in different
sports and also gain more experience with further coaching
badges that I can attain.
“I feel like PNE is a club that will help me, it’s a welcoming,
community club. They help out and offer people of various
ages a good service. Having supported them as a boy and
now being able to work in the community and help them is a
big honour.”
66

PNE COMMUNITY AND EDUCATION TRUST
Jacob said: “I’m hoping to improve my communication with
older and younger people all around the community. In the
future, I want to be a personal trainer, and I feel like this
will help me a lot, getting to know different kinds of people.
“Now, being with Preston North End, it feels good, it’s a good
opportunity and I’m very thankful for it.”
Jordan said: “It’s good and it’s going to help me with my
coaching. It can help me massively.
“It’s a big club and there is a lot of inspiration for me within
the club. There are people around me that can help me
move forward within my coaching and help me do what I
want to do.”
Martell said: “I’m excited; Preston North End is a big club
and for me to be involved in the community is something
that I really wanted to do.
“I went to UCLan and heard about Preston North End
Community and Education Trust whilst I was there. As I saw
the opportunity arise, I had to go for it and knew it would
benefit for me in the long-run.”
Jack, Jacob, Jordan and Martell follow in the footsteps of
our last four Kickstart employees - David Berry, James Galt,
Nicole Collins and Reece Howarth – all of whom enjoyed sixmonth
job placement roles as Community Sports Coaches
with the Trust last year.
David, James, Nicole and Reece remain as casual staff
members of the Trust, with the former also being enrolled
on our Foundation Degree programme in Community
Football Coaching and Development, offered in partnership
with the University of South Wales and the EFL Trust.
The four of them all agreed that they developed their
confidence and personal skills from their employment with
PNECET.
PANTHERA CLINICAL
RESEARCH TEAM IN
BIRMINGHAM FAN ZONE
The Panthera Clinical Research team were in the fan zone with Preston North End Community and
Education Trust [PNECET] for our last home game against Birmingham City.
Based in Preston – formerly at the
Issa Medical Centre and now at the
brand new Fatima Health Centre
on Garstang Road – Panthera is an
independent organisation working
closely with clinical research
organisations and NHS trusts
nationwide to help in the development
and research into new medications.
Information about the clinical trials
that are run by Panthera was
available at the stall, with a focus on
trials to combat non-alcoholic fatty
liver disease, which affects one in
three adults in the UK.
The early stages of non-alcoholic fatty
liver disease can be brought on by
obesity or a sedentary lifestyle, causing
excess fat to build up around the liver,
which can lead to liver cirrhosis and
liver failure. Panthera’s trials are
investigating medication to reverse the
condition in its early stages.
In the care of Panthera, those who
do become involved in clinical trials
around non-alcoholic fatty liver
disease will receive a health check, a
one-to-one with a healthcare clinician
and a fibroscan – a specialist
ultrasound of the liver.
Stuart Young, CEO of Panthera Clinical
Research, said: “The need to develop
new medicines is more prominent
than ever, people are living longer,
but quality of life is also of paramount
importance.
“Panthera works closely with local
healthcare providers and partners
like PNE to offer opportunities
for more people to get involved in
research and help advance new
medicines in a safe and ethical
environment. It’s a great privilege
to support PNE and the local
community.”
Those interested in the
services of Panthera can still
get involved in their work
children aged five to 11-years-old.
Children can experience an exciting range of activities
on the Soccer School provision, with themed activities
and tournaments running, and medals and certificates
available for high-performing participants.
Meanwhile, the Activity Zone provision includes multisports
The provisions run with the support of PNECET’s fully
Covid-19 measures will remain in place to ensure
the safety of all children involved, as well as parents
All children will have their temperature checked with
an infrared thermometer upon arrival and those with
temperatures above 37.6 °C will be unable to attend. If
you, your child or anyone else in your household has
Covid-19 symptoms, please do not attend.
Handwashing stations and facilities will be available at
all times of the day for children, with all equipment to be
sanitised before each session throughout the day.
Children who attend either provision must wear trainers
and have suitable clothing for both indoor and outdoor
facilities. Children must also bring a packed lunch and
labelled water bottle, with soft drinks not permitted.
Those taking part in the Soccer School provision can wear
trainers or astro-turf moulds, but not studded football
boots. Shin pads are also required.
One-day bookings are available at £12 per day, while it’s
THE ONE AND ONLY
RAWCLIFFE
REFLECTS ON
MORECAMBE DRAW
Women’s first team coach David Rawcliffe reflected on the 1-1 draw against Morecambe Reserves
as one of frustration.
Follow the women’s team on Twitter @PNE_WFC.
The Shrimps took a first-half lead
before Abi Cookson equalised for
the Lilywhites almost immediately
after the half-time restart, but the
visitors were unable to complete the
turnaround with a second goal as the
spoils were shared.
Rawcliffe felt the hosts’ opener after
half an hour brought North End
to life and was pleased with their
improvement after the break.
He told The One And Only: “From our
perspective, it took us a while to get
going. We were fairly slow starters.
“Morecambe scored with a good
finish into the top corner, our ‘keeper
didn’t have a chance with it. As it has
done before, that woke us up a little
for the last ten to 15 minutes of the
first half, which was a lot better than
the first 30 minutes.
“At half-time, we made some changes
to try to improve the tempo and
changed some personnel too to
freshen it up a bit. We asked the
girls to raise it and get us back in
the game.
“We started the second half really
well and came out of the blocks
quickly, scoring within a minuteand-a-half
of the restart. Within
five minutes, we’d had a couple of
chances that we really should have
taken to get us ahead.
“For the first 15 to 20 minutes, we put
them under real pressure without
finding that finish. That’s our Achilles
heel at the moment. The game then
became quite open and in the end the
draw was probably a fair result in
terms of the opportunities created.
“We had another right at the end,
but we couldn’t quite take it. It was a
frustrating game because we felt it
was there to be won, but Morecambe
defended well, counter attacked well
and we just couldn’t find the finish.”
While Rawcliffe might have hoped for
more against Morecambe, the point
maintains a solid run of form for the
women’s team – with five wins, two
draws and only two defeats in their
last nine league outings.
“The positive is we didn’t lose and
that keeps our run going,” Rawcliffe
continued. “The frustration is we
want the team to move on and move
up the league.
“The three points were there for
us but we couldn’t take them. It’s
frustrating we couldn’t win but we
made sure we didn’t lose.
“The girls played very well in the
second half. We want to be more
aggressive, more clinical and keep
the tempo going. We will continue to
work on that.”
Rawcliffe is confident the squad
can continue to compete well in
the league.
“We believe we have a team and a
squad that is capable of competing
in this league. For us it’s about
consistency and making sure that
team is there week in, week out, and
we can do that in both training and on
game days.
“It’s just the inconsistency of injuries,
people not being available, and Covid
as well has had its impact. We are
continuing to improve as a team and
we’re seeing good spells of what we want
the team to do on the pitch, we just need
to do it for a full 90 minutes now.
“Since October, we’ve put in some
good performances and we want to
keep those standards high. We have
to keep the bar high so the girls
have something to aim for and to be
successful at this club.”
PNE COMMUNITY AND EDUCATION TRUST
LANCASHIRE POLICE SEASON CARD
INITIATIVE: HARLOW-MAI AWARDED
SHEFFIELD UNITED TICKETS
Throughout the 2021/22 season, Preston North
End Community and Education Trust [PNECET]
has been working alongside PNE Football Officer,
PC Paul Elliott, to distribute match tickets for
Preston North End home games to deserving
members of the local community.
Utilising funds from the Proceeds
of Crime Act, Lancashire Police
purchased four PNE season cards at
the start of the campaign, with the
tickets used to recognise and reward
local supporters for acts of kindness
and bravery, good-will gestures
and more.
Together, PNECET and PC Paul Elliott
are distributing the tickets to
different people
for every home
game, with up to two adult and
two junior tickets given away for
each fixture.
Most recently, young supporter
Harlow-Mai was recognised for
the support and care she showed
for her dad, Will, when he became
unconscious at home.
Will collapsed at home and spent 30
minutes unconscious, during which
time Harlow-Mai raised the need for
help with her mum and neighbours.
This led to Will getting the help he
urgently needed, as he was later
discovered to have had Sepsis.
Will said: “I believe Harlow-Mai
deserves this as on Friday 17th
December 2021 Harlow acted bravely
and did not think of anyone else apart
from myself.
“I collapsed at home and was
unconscious for around 30 minutes,
she acted swiftly
and contacted her
mother who then
raised help. My
poor nine-year-old’s
words were that
she thought her dad
was dead.
“She got help from a
neighbour who acted
and got the ambulance
involved. The hospital
told me that if Harlow
did not act when she
did, it could have been fatal.”
Harlow was rewarded for her
bravery and care for her dad by
being invited to the rearranged
Sheffield United game earlier this
month. She was able to attend and
enjoy the game with her family,
including her dad Will.
Nominations for other deserving members of the community to receive complimentary match
tickets through Lancashire Police’s season card initiative are welcomed and can be sent via
email to community@pne.com.
Frankie McAvoy will have the
season’s kick-off in mind when
Preston North End are put to
the test against Manchester
City this evening.
The Lilywhites head coach
is to start pushing the players
towards 90-minute run outs in
the three friendlies this week,
starting with the visit to City’s
Academy Stadium.
North End go to Wigan
on Friday night and then
host Manchester United
at Deepdale the following
afternoon.
There is scope to use the
full squad in the three games
but instead of a 60/30 split in
terms of minutes, McAvoy
needs some of the players
going for longer.
Something resembling the
team he has in mind to face
Hull on the opening day of the
season, should also be seen at
some point this week.
McAvoy says ‘five or six’
McAvoy said: “In these
games we will be close to
where we see the starting XI
being. This will give us an idea
of where we are at.
“It goes without saying that
Manchester City will be tough
even though they won’t have
all their players available.
“It’s likely for a good
“What we have to do then
is make sure we are really
structured behind it,
“When we do have the ball
we need to be courageous and
brave enough to make passes
“Manchester City feel that
“The important thing is
that we get more game time
into the guys’ legs and see how
we are progressing.”
One PNE player who needs
more action is Alan Browne,
the skipper having played his
first 45 minutes of pre-season
in last Saturday’s 1-1 draw with
Accrington Stanley.
Browne has revealed he
had keyhole surgery on a hip
injury at the end of last season
and his rehab meant he was
only able to start training
towards the end of the squad’s
time in Scotland.
With that first bit of action
under his belt, the midfielder
will now be looking to give his
match fitness a boost.
Tonight’s game (7pm) could
pit three Preston players
against their former club.
Ched Evans started his
career at City, while City paid
£6.2m to land Scott Sinclair
from Swansea nine years ago.
Greg Cunningham’s first
taste of English football was
with City, the Irish left-back
playing four times for them
after being a trainee.
The games this week will
come too early for Matthew
Olosunde as he recovers from
an Achilles tendon knock.
THREE of
the BEST
This season, we want supporters to
share with us their favourite three things
about being a PNE fan, whether that be
a favourite goal, kit, player, match or
memory. It’s up to you!
All you need to do to take part is email
media@pne.com with the subject ‘Three Of The
Best’ and include the following information.
Sixty to 90 words about each of your three picks,
explaining why you have chosen them, and also
attach a high-resolution photo of yourself, as well
as your date of birth.
Lucas Fortune, 10
1. MY FIRST GAME
My first game going to watch Preston North End was our 1-1
draw against Wolves in February 2018. It was the first proper
game I watched, and a chance for me to understand the sport.
Alan Browne opened the scoring with a header, with Callum
Robinson getting the assist, while midfielder John Welsh got sent
off. In general it was a superb result for us because they played
half an hour with an extra man!
2. ONE OF OUR OWN
A superstar for me is Joe Rodwell-Grant. In the one cap I saw
him play he was pretty good, but it wasn’t enough time to score.
He will never get out of my head, I loved him, I screamed and
clapped him off! I can’t wait to see him bagging goals, maybe out
on loan or for PNE. I was actually delighted Joe went to Bamber
Bridge because hopefully he can come back and get the chance
to rack up games for North End.
3. GOAL FEST
One game which has stuck in my head months later is a match
we played in pre-season, the one against Brig. I am grateful we
played that, because if not then Jamie Thomas wouldn’t have
come to PNE! As well as that, Noah Mawene scored and assisted
that day, and we scored eight goals! That day I was actually at
Guisborough Town, so as soon as I came home I sprinted to this
exact laptop I am using now to watch the highlights with my
grandad so we could celebrate together.
