Well, here we are 

already with our 

first edition for 2022 

and it’s hard to believe another 

year has gone by. I wonder how 

many people are still with their 

New Year’s resolutions? I forgot to 

make mine ha! 

Romance is in the air as Valentine’s day 

will soon be with us and there are many 

restaurants in Out & About magazine for you 

to choose where to take “Your Lady” or “Your 

Man” for a great evening. 

This month celebrates Burns Night on 

Friday 25th. The 25th January marks the 

birthday of one of Scotland’s important 

cultural icons, Robert Burns. Just in case 

you’re not already aware, Robert Burns was 

one of Scotland’s national poets, and is still 

admired today. 

Burns Night is celebrated by relatives and 

friends coming together to have a Burns 

Supper in honour of this national treasure. 

Did you know that every birth month has 

a flower and that every flower has a unique 

meaning and tell a story? In an educational 

sense, flower characteristics such as 

appearance, colour, and scent, have relevance 

as gifts, just like birth stones. Birth flowers 

(birthday flowers or birth month flowers) is 

one of a class of specialized categorizations 

offered by florists 

The January birth flowers are the carnation 

and snowdrop. January’s Birthstone:

during these alcohol fueled rants that 

your boyfriend seems to think are 

acceptable. What I need to know is if 

you are subjected to his

unacceptable that drunken violence 

is a green flag to his harming you 

physically or mentally, or both.

Presbyopia is the normal loss of near focusing 

ability that occurs with age. Most people begin to 

notice the effects of presbyopia sometime after age 

40, when they start having trouble seeing small print 

clearly — including text messages on their phone. You 

can’t escape presbyopia, even if you’ve never had a 

vision problem before. Even people who are nearsighted 

will notice that their near vision blurs when 

they wear their usual eyeglasses or contact lenses to 

correct distance vision. 

Presbyopia: What causes 

it and how to treat it 

from your eyes they get smaller in size, so this is 

only a temporary and partially successful solution 

to presbyopia. If you can still see close objects pretty 

well, presbyopia can cause headaches, eye strain and 

visual fatigue that makes reading and other near 

vision tasks less comfortable and more tiring. 

What causes presbyopia? 

Presbyopia is an age-related process. It is a gradual 

thickening and loss of flexibility of the natural lens 

inside your eye. These age-related changes occur 

within the proteins in the lens, making the lens harder 

and less elastic over time. Age-related changes also 

take place in the muscle fibers surrounding the lens. 

With less elasticity, it gets difficult for the eyes to focus 

on close objects. 

Researchers estimate that nearly 2 billion people 

worldwide have presbyopia. Though presbyopia is 

a normal change in our eyes as we age, it often is a 

significant and emotional event because it’s a sign of 

aging that’s impossible to ignore and difficult to hide. 

In parts of the world where there is no access to vision 

care, presbyopia is much more than an inconvenience 

— it’s a leading cause of vision impairment that 

reduces people’s quality of life and productivity. 

Presbyopia symptoms 

When you become presbyopic, you either have to 

hold your smartphone and other objects and reading 

material farther from your eyes to see them more 

clearly. Unfortunately, when you move things farther

(including reading glasses), contact lenses and vision 

surgery. 

Eyeglasses with progressive lenses are the most 

popular solution for presbyopia for most people

presbyopia to notice they are becoming more sensitive 

to light and glare due to aging changes in their eyes.

Photochromic lenses, which darken automatically in 

sunlight, are a good choice for this reason. 

Another presbyopia treatment option is eyeglasses 

with bifocal lenses, but bifocals provide a more limited 

range of vision for many people with presbyopia. 

Reading glasses are another choice. Unlike bifocals and 

progressive lenses, which most people wear all day, 

reading glasses are worn only when needed to see close 

objects and small print more clearly. 

If you wear contact lenses, multifocal contact lenses 

to correct both distance, far and close with the same 

contact lens are available with many materials and 

designs available. Your optometrist can advise the best 

one for you. 

If you don’t want to wear eyeglasses or contact 

lenses for presbyopia, a number of surgical options to 

treat presbyopia are available as well. One presbyopia 

correction procedure that’s gaining popularity is 

implantation of a corneal inlay. The first step to see if 

you are a good candidate for presbyopia surgery is to 

have a comprehensive eye exam and a consultation 

with a refractive surgeon who specializes in the 

surgical correction of presbyopia.

“Herculaneum” 

After the huge impact of the site 

of Ancient Pompeii, Ancient 

Herculaneum came as rather a ‘letdown’ 

(at first). 

A small site, hemmed in by a low cliff, 

we were presented with a tight grid of 

narrow ‘lanes’ and ruined properties (mostly 

dwellings - a few quite large) in a crater-like 

depression.... I felt I was only getting a tiny 

glimpse of the real Ancient Herculaneum, 

most of which lies buried beneath the Modern 

City. 

The Vesuvius Eruption of AD 79 was huge 

and all-encompassing! 

We were looking down on what had been a 

part of the Port Area, a district that must have 

hummed with activity in Ancient Times.... 

my “Magic Travel Moment” came when we 

went down into the grid of narrow lanes and 

wandered through it.... now I was getting the 

‘feel’ of a suburban neighbourhood, almost 

like the closely-knit intimacy of a bee-hive. 

Real people had lived their lives here some 

2000 years ago.... families, workers, soldiers, 

sailors, rich citizens of the Empire.... questions 

crowded into my mind.... 

Just how healthy was their way of life? 

Were they friendly or reclusive? Where did 

they shop? Eateries? Bars? Meeting places? 

Temples? 

Then I looked up at the top of the low cliff.... 

and was reminded sharply that Modern 

Life sees Ancient Herculaneum from above 

and cares not that it has been so completely 

obliterated. 

Many secrets of Ancient Herculaneum 

remain buried.... will it always be so?

You work hard all day (in the varied 

and interesting world of international 

reinsurance). 

You are part of a sophisticated team that 

brings many skills and much experience to a 

big enterprise, even though you are only ‘a very 

small cog in a very large wheel’. 

Come the day’s end it is time to relax.... 

most of us adjourn to an inviting, nearby bar/ 

restaurant, at the foot of “La Grande Place”, a 

pivotal centre-point in the History of this Great 

City. 

Seated comfortably near a roaring log fire, 

its hearth set in a medieval, carved stone 

niche, conversation among us is mixed, even 

desultory.... after all, we work together every 

day.... now is the time drink our drinks and eat 

our nibbles, not to engage in idle chatter! 


After a while we start to disperse, to head to 

our homes. 

(for me, a cosy little hotel which has become 

my work-base for a year, going home to England 

at week-ends). 

I step out into “La Grande Place”, its many, 

impressive facades soberly lit (NOT floodlit, 

thank goodness!), and, as always, am 

greatly impressed by its atmosphere.... austere, 

powerful, but not cold. 

To add to the “Magic Moment”, I have a rich 

choice of where to eat my evening meal?

Churchill (1874-1965) died. He

courageous leadership and 

defiant rhetoric had fortified 

the British during their long 

struggle against Hitler’s 

Germany. “I have nothing 

to offer but blood, toil, tears, 

and sweat,” he stated upon 

becoming prime minister at the 

beginning of the war. He called 

Hitler’s Reich a “monstrous 

tyranny, never surpassed in the 

dark, lamentable catalogue of 

human crime.” Following the 

war, he coined the term “Iron 

Curtain” to describe the barrier 

between areas in Eastern

We left Francistown in the far 

north of Botswana and moved 

south to Johannesburg. With 

all the hectic and frazzled selling, 

clearing and packing I’d not 

had a moment to even 

think about the changes 

it would bring. I had 

even forgotten 

my panic when 

returning 

from Libya to 

England and 

dithering for 

ages in front 

of the fridges, 

shelves and 

cabinets in the 

supermarkets, 

blown away 

by the variety 

of brands, sizes 

and options on offer. 

When, for over five 

years you can only buy one 

kind of cheese, powdered milk 

in a tin and one cut of consumable meat, 

to be offered so much, was unsettling, and 

indeed, frightening. 

In Botswana, the children ran wild, their 

only dresses were school uniform and the 

rest of the time we were in jodhpurs and 

t-shirts or swimwear. Life was casual and 

we seldom dressed for success. 

Johannesburg was going to be very 

different. 

The first few days were spent unpacking 

and then it was time to go 

shopping. New uniforms 

for the children, smart 

outfits for me as I 

was engaged by a 

very upmarket 

girls’ school 

and teachers 

were expected 

to look 

respectable. 

Glancing at 

my hair and 

nails I saw 

they would not 

do at all. 

There were 

shrieks in the 

changing room as 

we tried on dresses. 

I faced stiff resistance 

from both of them and 

while sorting out one child the 

other escaped. I found her swinging from 

a revolving clothes rack, giggling she 

clutched handfuls of garments and whirled 

around and around. 

As I extricated her, the other had left 

the change room and was peeking into all 

the other change rooms ‘to see what was 

behind the curtains’.

Further delights were in store. While one 

was thrilled to travel on an escalator, the 

other was terrified. While I was attempting 

to persuade the youngest that the teeth 

were not going to eat her up, the eldest was 

whizzing up and down, disappearing in 

the floors above. 

Had we really been in the bush that 

long? Visions of Tarzan being introduced 

to ‘civilization’ flashed through my head. 

By this time I was exhausted, even for 

me the bright, shiny lights of the mall, 

stretching into the distance, were eyewatering. 

Unfortunately, the exit was a 

glass sliding door. Once they discovered 

the doors open and closed just for them, 

another burst of energy inspired them to 

put this to the test over and over again. 

When we finally got outside and were 

waiting at the bus stop, they both sat down 

on the pavement, announcing they were 

tired. I yanked them, none too gently, to 

their feet. 

In less than a week they were about to 

attend one of the top schools in the country 

and I wasn’t sure they would welcome 

jungle rats in class. Our school in Botswana 

was very free and easy. For example, if it 

rained, we let the children out to play. 

Rain is such a precious commodity in this 

semi desert country their currency is called 

‘Pula’ the Tswana word for rain. 

In one way it was a shame that my wildrunning 

free children were to be tamed by 

city life, but of course they adapted very 

quickly. I think it took me a lot longer!

The president, Elinor Gonzalez lives in Las Bassetes where she cares for 

Calpe’s abandoned and sick animals, bringing them back to health and

VALENTINE’S DAY: 

A DAY OF ROMANCE 

Saint Valentine’s Day, also known as Valentine’s 

Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is observed on 

February 14 each year. Many people around the 

world exchanged between loved ones, cards, candy, 

gifts or flowers for their special “Valentine.” The day 

of romance we call Valentine’s Day is named from a 

Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century. 

However, who is this mysterious saint, and where did 

these traditions come from? The history of Valentine’s 

Day–and the story of its patron saint–is shrouded 

in mystery. We do know that February has long 

been celebrated as a month of romance and that St. 

Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges 

of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But 

who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become 

associated with this ancient rite? 

We arrived at a beautifully decorated rThe Catholic 

Church recognizes at least three different saints named 

Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. 

One legend contends that Valentine was a priest 

who served during the third century in Rome. When 

Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made 

better soldiers than those with wives and families, 

he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, 

realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius 

and continued to perform marriages for young lovers 

in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, 

Claudius ordered that he be put to death. 

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been 

killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh 

Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and 

tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned 

Valentine actually sent the first “Valentine” greeting 

himself after he fell in love with a young girl–possibly 

his jailor’s daughter–who visited him during his 

confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he 

wrote her a letter signed “From your Valentine,” an 

expression that is still in use today. Although the truth 

behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories all 

emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic and– 

most importantly–romantic figure. By the Middle Ages, 

perhaps thanks to this reputation, Valentine would 

become one of the most popular saints in England 

and France. While some believe that Valentine’s Day is 

celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate 

the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial–which 

probably occurred around A.D. 270–others claim 

that the Christian church may have decided to place 

St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February 

in an effort to “Christianize” the pagan celebration 

of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, 

or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival 

dedicated to the Roman god of agriculture. Pope 

Gelasius declared February 14 St. Valentine’s Day. It 

was not until much later, however, that the day became 

definitively associated with love. It was commonly 

believed in France and England that February 14 was 

the beginning of birds’ mating season, which added to 

the idea that the middle of Valentine’s Day should be 

a day for romance. 

Valentine greetings were popular as far back as 

the Middle Ages, though written Valentine’s didn’t 

begin to appear until after 1400. The oldest known 

valentine still in existence today was a poem written 

in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, to his wife while 

he was imprisoned in the Tower of London following 

his capture at the Battle of Agincoirt. (The greeting 

is now part of the manuscript collection of the British 

Library in London). Several years later, it is believed 

that King Henry V hired a writer named John Lydgate 

to compose a valentine note to Catherine of Valois. 

In addition to the United States, Valentine’s Day is 

celebrated in Canada, Mexico the United Kingdom, 

France and Australia. In Great Britain, Valentine’s 

Day began to be popularly celebrated around the 17th 

century. By the middle of the 18th, it was common 

for friends and lovers of all social classes to exchange 

small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, and by 

1900 printed cards began to replace written letters due 

to improvements in printing technology. Ready-made 

cards were an easy way for people to express their 

emotions in a time when direct expression of one’s 

feelings was discouraged. Cheaper postage rates also 

contributed to an increase in the popularity of sending 

Valentine’s Day greetings. 

Americans probably began exchanging hand-made 

valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther 

A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced 

valentines in America. Howland, known as the 

“Mother of the Valentine,” made elaborate creations 

with real lace, ribbons and colourful pictures known 

as “scrap.” Today, according to the Greeting Card 

Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day 

cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the 

second largest card-sending holiday of the year. An 

estimated 2.6 billion cards are sent for Christmas. 

Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all 

valentines. Valentine’s Day symbols that are used 

today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the 

figure of the winged Cupid.


Numerous early Christian martyrs were named 

Valentine. Valentine of Rome was a priest in Rome 

who was martyred about AD 496. The relics of Saint 

Valentine were kept in the Church in Rome. The flowercrowned 

skull of Saint Valentine is exhibited in the 

Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome. Other 

relics are found at Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church 

in Dublin, Ireland. Valentine of Terni became bishop 

of Interamna about AD 197. He is also buried on the 

Via Flaminia, but in a different location than Valentine 

of Rome. Jack B. Oruch states that “abstracts of the 

acts of the two saints were in nearly every church and 

monastery of Europe.” A third saint named Valentine 

who was mentioned in early martyrologies under 

date of February 14. He was martyred in Africa with 

a number of companions, but nothing more is known 

about him. 

John Foxe, an English historian, as well as the Order of 

Carmelites, state that Saint Valentine was buried in the 

Church of Praxedes in Rome, located near the cemetery 

of Saint Hippolytus. This order says that according to 

legend, “Julia herself planted a pink-blossomed almond 

tree near his grave. Today, the almond tree remains a 

symbol of abiding love and friendship.” 

According to legend, in order “to remind these men 

of their vows and God’s love, Saint Valentine is said to 

have cut hearts from parchment”, giving them to these 

soldiers and persecuted Christians, a possible origin of 

the widespread use of hearts on St. Valentine’s Day. 

Saint Valentine supposedly wore a purple amethyst 

ring, customarily worn on the hands of Christian 

bishops with an image of Cupid engraved in it, a 

recognizable symbol associated with love that was 

legal under the Roman Empire; Roman soldiers would 

recognize the ring and ask him to perform marriage 

for them. Probably because of the association with 

Saint Valentine, amethyst has become the birthstone of 

February, and it’s thought to attract love. 

While the custom of sending cards, flowers, 

chocolates and other gifts originated in the UK. In 

Norfolk, a character called ‘Jack’ Valentine knocks on 

the rear door of houses leaving sweets and presents for 

children. 

In Slovenia, Saint Valentine was one of the saints 

of spring, the saint of good health and the patron 

of beekeepers and pilgrims and it is said that Saint 

Valentine brings the keys of roots. Plants and flowers 

start to grow on this day, when the first work in the 

vineyards and in the fields commences and that birds 

propose to each other or marry on that day. 

Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have 

given way to mass-produced greeting cards.

U3A Vall Del Pop Ladies 

at Christmas Lunch 

On Tuesday, 14th December 2021, 

the ladies of the U3A Vall del Pop 

got in to their sparkly outfits and 

headed for their Christmas lunch at 

Victoria Station, Parcent. 

We arrived at a beautifully 

decorated room with Christmas 

trees hanging from the ceiling 

adorned with glittery baubles 

and sparkling lights, immediately 

giving a festive ambiance. We were 

all greeted with a Cava or Bucks Fizz 

and canapés. It didn’t take long for 

the chatter and the laughter to start. 

With the snap of crackers and the round 

of the corny Xmas jokes, the food arrived. 

Victoria and David offered us a choice 

of 7 starters, 5 main courses and 6 desserts 

including 

a half bottle of wine and coffee. 

Brilliant value and our thanks to the staff 

for excellent service. 

Suitably replete we finally finished 

and headed home around 5pm

History of Burn’s 

Burns Night is traditionally 

celebrated with a Burns Supper, 

which involves toasts, poetry 

readings and some tasty food! Haggis 

is the centrepiece at all Suppers, and it’s 

served on a large platter that enters the 

room to the sound of bagpipes. 

Burns Night is annually celebrated 

in Scotland on Tuesday January 25. It 

commemorates the life of the bard (poet) 

Robert Burns, who was born on January 

25, 1759. The day also celebrates Burns’ 

contribution to Scottish culture. His best 

known work is Auld Lang Syne.

drink, and verse are celebrated on January 

25, the anniversary of the birth of Robert 

Burns. Burns is regarded as Scotland’s 

national bard. ... Burns’s ode To a Haggis 

is recited before the haggis is carved and 

served to guests. 

Burn’s Night, also known as Burn’s 

Supper, is a holiday celebrated in Scotland 

on January 25th in honour of the poet 

Robert Burns. While this holiday is 

officially a Scottish holiday, many people 

all over the world celebrate it by hosting 

their own versions of Burn’s Supper. 

Robert Burns was a Scottish poet and 

lyricist which was born in Ayrshire, 

Scotland. He was regarded as a pioneer of 

the Romantic Movement. He is not only 

known for his poetry but is also known 

for his original compositions. Although 

he died on July 21st, 1796, he gained 

enormous popularity in Scotland during 

the 19th and 20th centuries. 

Burn’s Night can be traced all the way 

back to a supper held by the friends of 

Robert Burns on July 21st, 1801. They had 

gathered together on this day because 

it was the fifth anniversary of his death 

and they wanted to honour him. This first 

Burn’s Night was held at Burns Cottage. 

That year, the Burns Club was founded 

and a supper was arranged on what the 

founders thought was Robert Burn’s 

birthday–January, 29th. However, they 

then discovered records which showed 

Burn’s birthday was actually on January 

25th. Since then, Burn’s Supper has been 

celebrated on that day. 

One of the traditional ways to celebrate 

Burn’s Night is with a Burn’s Supper. 

Formal or informal and may include only 

friends or friends and family. During this 

supper, ‘Selkirk Grace’ is recited as well 

as the ‘Address to a Haggis’. Whiskey 

and food are also main components of 

this supper. Some of the food which is 

served includes Cullen Skink, Haggis, 

neeps and tatties. Desserts often include 

oatmeal shortbread, whiskey caramels and 

marinated raspberries. 

At the end of a poem read, a whisky 

toast will be proposed to the haggis, and 

the company will sit down to the meal. 

The haggis is traditionally served with 

mashed potatoes (tatties) and mashed 

swede (neeps). 

WORKS BY BURNS 

After the speeches there may be singing 

of songs by Burns (such as Ae Fond Kiss, 

Parcel o’ Rogues and A Man’s a Man) and 

more poetry (such as To a Mouse, To a 

Louse, Tam o’ Shanter, The Twa Dogs and 

Holy Willie’s Prayer).

CLOSING 

Finally, the host will call on one of the 

guests to give the vote of thanks. Then, 

everyone is asked to stand, join hands, and 

sing Auld Lang Syne to bring the evening 

to an end.

night was such a success, they decided to 

continue the tradition every year to honour 

their friend. 

HOW IS BURNS NIGHT CELEBRATED?

MEET THE PIED PIPER 

OF MARKETING 

We are all familiar with Wrigley’s 

Chewing Gum but the story behind 

the Wrigley legend is well worth 

chewing over. The Wrigley legend had 

humble beginnings. 

William Wrigley Jnr., when just 13-years 

of age worked as a salesman for his father’s 

company. Founded in 1891 the Chicago 

firm was a manufacturer of household soap 

and baking powder. As a sales incentive the 

young Wrigley offered free packs of chewing 

gum with every purchase. 

It soon dawned on William that the gum 

was more popular than the baking powder. 

Hey Ho! The young entrepreneur changed 

course and in doing so William Wrigley Jnr., 

changed history. 

He continued to give his product away 

as a lure to buy more. Such was his success 

that every business in the United States and 

soon Europe fell in behind the Pied Piper of 

Marketing. 

By the 1930s, his product was in every 

America home. The American merry 

marketeer had Wrigley’s Chewing Gum 

advertisements in every bus from Seattle to

Louisiana. If you suffered from a toothache 

you went to the dentist. 

The Dust Bowl, the swamp communities of 

Louisiana, suburban Boston, the docklands 

of Portland in Oregon, cowboy country and 

the prairies. Your dentist had displayed in 

the waiting room posters with tips on mouth 

hygiene. These were supplied free of charge 

by Wrigley’s Spearmint Gum which was 

advertised on each display. 

Every American child received a birthday 

card from Wrigley’s Spearmint Chewing 

gum with strips of the company’s product 

attached to the birthday card. 

This is what you call opportunism and 

all business is based on opportunism. The 

ability to see an opportunity, perceive a need 

and fill that need. The first rule of selling 

(actually there are many first rules of selling) 

is to discover what the customer wants and 

sell it to him. 

Due to circumstances beyond my control, 

I became redundant in 1983. I learnt that W. 

H. Smiths the national chain of newsagents, 

were disposing of hundreds of unsold books 

of interest to those interested in outdoors 

activity. I bought the lot for a song, I rented 

a shop and named it Rucksack n’ Rifle, put 

them on display and then realised why the 

books were unsold; no one wanted them. 

As I peered into the abyss where many 

bright ideas end up, a customer strolled in 

with a powerful air rifle in his grasp and 

asked if I could sell it for him. Helpfully, I 

agreed to display the weapon but having no 

idea of the value of such guns I asked for my 

visitor’s advice. 

‘Give me £30 and put a £60 price tag on it.’ 

Placing the air rifle in the window it sold 

within the hour and I pocketed thirty sobs. I 

learnt from it and replacing the books with 

guns and knives I became one of Britain’s 

biggest importers and sellers of such 

products. 

Again, a victim of fate, a couple of gun 

incidents changed the laws and my booming 

business went from boom to bust or bang to 

dust. Being an opportunist, I survived.

and free by PDF downloads. Readers can contact 

the author directly and easily transfer a modest 

donation to his or her bank account if they wish.

hard-pressed writer only about 10 per cent.

Life begins at 40 so the saying goes but for 

many women the best years of one’s life 

starts at 50 years of age. Rather an unusual 

thing for a Russian to say. In Russia, the end of 

child-bearing age normally downgrades women 

to God’s waiting room. 

This is no longer true: I was 55 when I became 

one of the first 50 years old + models receiving 

rounds of applause and bouquets as we took 

to the podium at the Mercedes Benz Fashion 

Week as part of the Vyacheslav Zaitsev Fashion 

Theatre. 

Seasonal fashion debuts are keenly 

competitive. At fashion exhibitions the closest 

attention is paid to detail. Most importantly, the 

models are selected less on their good looks but 

on a presence that commands attention. 

The sensational Mercedes Benz Fashion Week 

was followed by further engagements at which 

the 50 + ladies were the rule not the exception to 

the rule. 

For me, the showcasing of the latest fashions 

included appearing at Moscow’s prestigious 

Ectet Fashion Week and CHAPEAU’s exhibition 

of fashionable hats and others. 

I work at Channel 1 (1tv.ru.) Federal 

Television program, @modniy.tv, on the popular 

show’s Fashionable Verdict’ offering fashion 

advice. At the latter events, I demonstrate 

women’s fashion and cosmetic enhancement. 

There seemed to be an insatiable demand 

for models whose maturity embraces change 

in society. This is especially important. Refined 

visitors and guests choose their fashion with 

care as they too will be the centre of attention at 

high society events. 

My mission is to introduce the best Russian 

designers, stylists, and make-up artists. To talk 

about fashion events with an exciting difference. 

This is an opportunity to showcase the elegance 

of older women whose advantages are acquired 

by worldly experience and time.

instrument, become Thespians so we too can 

take to the stage, acquire new life roles. Many 

women will do as I have done to become 

successful fashion models. In their new role, 

they will enjoy the excitement and glamour of 

the catwalks. 

In the last 5 years, demand for non-standard 

models has increased. Mature elegant women 

are in demand as models for stylish wear, 

cosmetics, etc. The new age women become 

skilled at new professions, make-up stylists, 

fashion designers, hairdressers, photographers, 

everything associated with the fashion industry. 

NELLI KAMALOVA worked as a restaurant 

manager and in personnel work. Nellie 

says, ‘It was only in my older years that I 

discovered my potential. I learned to dress 

nicely, use the right make-up, and keep 

my posture. There was a new lustre in my 

appearance. All of us women, regardless 

of age, are girls inside and want to be 

loved and admired. Present fashion is very 

democratic in terms of both fashion trends 

and pricing.’

used by advertising companies 

to sell products like detergent or 

shampoo. They imply that there is better 

version of the self same product and we 

often can’t tell the difference. It feels good 

to have the latest technology bringing us 

the very best, nevertheless. 

Now we are all starting a New Year that 

has a microcosm of all that is in store for 

us. January is a month of anticipation and 

it passes slowly, revealing a further eleven 

months ahead of us, with all the many 

twists and turns that life in these times 

brings. 

Above all uncertainty is not a clear 

way ahead. Accustomed to planning our 

lives and hopefully having the right to 

a happiness in forward planning; now 

everything seems to be on hold as more 

restrictions are heaped upon us, and any 

form of plan can fade or die. Life could be 

said to be somewhat out of control, but it 

will be expertly managed by testing our 

reserve and our resolve. Nothing seems 

easy under pressure, and accepting second 

best is never an accomplishment, and 

could be another wind up or a distinct 

disappointment. 

Come what may we will get through, 

but that’s cold comfort when we are tried 

and tested, and under pressure. If we are 

unsure of anything then it snags in our 

minds and darkens our days. Our focus 

shifts and we start to suffer in many ways, 

as a knock-on effect has a reaction we 

find it hard to sail through. It is the storm 

that breaks the silence of the night and 

awakens us from the comfort of a deep 

sleep. We can feel the energies 

of the lightning and the 

thunder as they do 

exactly what they 

are sent to do, 

as they seek 

control of the 

elements 

who have 

created 

them. It 

is after 

the storm 

that the 

ions are 

charged 

up and 

the air feels 

clear and 

quite still. 

So too will 

we weather 

the storm of life, 

whatever it may bring. 

The destructive wild force 

of the imminent tempest soon 

passes over us and afterwards the sun will 

shine. That’s a give-on. 

The intensity of life is creation and using 

our specific gifts and getting through any 

way we can, will be our guiding light 

and our survival too. Spirit can lift us up. 

Our faith will see us through and serve 

to illuminate our way ahead. As a child 

asks for a light to be kept on at night and


asks that the door be left open, the loving 

parent understands and complies. One 

day that same door will be 

tightly closed as the child 

accepts the darkness 

without terror. As 

we accept the 

darkness so 

we too are 

enabled to 

illuminate 

our way 

ahead for 

ourselves. 

The 

best way of 

connecting to 

Spirit quickly 

and efficiently 

is to light a candle. 

That burning flame can 

be the fastest way to simply 

connect our higher selves with the 

loving care of the Spirit World. If it seems 

simplistic then let it happen and you will 

see, as it burns, that it represents your 

own light to the Universe. Silence and 

darkness are obliterated in the simple 

process of acknowledging the Source 

and you can use this act of illumination 

to simply send out your message. 

Whether it be in silence in your mind or 

just speaking out loud; this connection 

is yours and yours alone, so say what 

you want to. Be distinct and never hold 

back, because you don’t need to. Sending 

out your wants or needs, or just make 

a statement or a wish to be heard; these 

are the blessings that Spirit knows how 

to handle only too well. They do not 

disappoint and they will not let you 

down especially if they feel that your 

needs are deserved. 

January seems to be a very long month. 

The longest month of the year in fact. 

As Christmas tinsel is removed and 

the coldest weather comes our way we 

appear to be waiting for the New Year 

ahead to rescue us somehow. Maybe it 

will or maybe it won’t. We will be guided 

by fate and steered by Spirit through the 

months that lie ahead. Whatever comes 

next we will deal with anything that 

comes our way, and knowing Spirit are 

always there to listen and assist with the 

highs and the lows is a great comfort. 

As we piece together the jigsaw puzzle 

that is our life, the blank spaces are those 

opportunities that are yet to happen, 

value them and they will work for you 

and help make more memories for you to 

treasure.

January. The Mediterranean has a way of calling 

you when you least expect it. Technically, the 

off-season in the Mediterranean is November 

to March, when most cruise lines move their 

ships to the Caribbean, South America, or Asia 

to meet demand for sailings in warm-weather 

destinations. However, the temperate Med can be 

quite inviting and far less crowded during these 

months. The seasonal resort areas will be closed 

or have limited hours, but the cruise lines know 

which ports are best to visit. There are so many 

short 7 to10 day Mediterranean cruises available 

in the Off-Season. 

There are more ships in the Med all year-round 

than you’d think. 

Norwegian Cruise Line has its 2,018-passengers. 

Norwegian Spirit cruising from Barcelona to ports 

in Spain, Portugal, Morocco, and the Canary 

Islands through until late March. Ocean calls 

it the “quiet season” and has its 930-passenger 

Viking Star sailing half-a-dozen itineraries, mostly 

from Rome and Barcelona. MSC Cruises has two 

ships in the Med this season the 4,488 passenger 

Meraviglia and the 2,550-passenger Orchestra— 

while the 3,724-passenger Costa Diadema is 

hosting seven-night itineraries in the region from 

Barcelona, Marseilles, Savona, and Civitavecchia 

(Rome). By mid to late March, there will be 

16-plus ships from six cruise lines sailing in the 

Mediterranean.

Mediterranean cruise this Valentine’s Day? Or to 

celebrate a milestone birthday or anniversary in 

March? Off-season cruises often don’t sell out, so 

you can be spontaneous and decide to book with 

just a few weeks’ notice. 

The Weather Is Better for Touring. Yes, the 

mercury can dip into the 40s (January is the 

coldest month, yet it rarely gets close to freezing), 

but more likely you’ll enjoy daytime averages in 

the high 50s, 60s, and even low 70s—perfect for 

active days of touring. 

Both Barcelona and Rome—two top cruise 

ports. You’ll appreciate that this time of year the 

tourist hordes are noticeably thinner, lines are 

shorter, and you’ll be able to enjoy the sights in 

comfort. 

Without so many tourists in the mix, you’ll 

be able to experience your destinations more 

authentically. The pace of daily life will be 

a bit slower, and the low-key charms of the 

Mediterranean from November to March may just 

make an off-season cruiser out of you for good. 

The Mediterranean is a fantastic mixing pot of 

culture, art, and cuisine. You have the beauty of 

living on the Costa with nearby, Cannes, France, 

and Italy to visit with all its charms in Venice, 

Naples, Rome, Tuscany, Pompeii, and Florence. 

Again on our doorstep discover the charm of 

Barcelona and Majorca, as well as Sicily, Corsica, 

Sardinia, and much more. 

Winter is from late October to mid-April and 

it’ll be cold in the Northern Mediterranean but 

don’t let that dissuade you from cruising, as the 

weather will still be perfect in Morocco, Egypt, 

and the Canary Islands. 

The Western Mediterranean borders France, 

Spain, and Italy, and most cruises will embark in 

Rome or Barcelona. When cruising the Western 

Mediterranean you’ll visit cities like Rome, 

Florence, Naples, Barcelona, Nice, and Lisbon. 

The Eastern Mediterranean will be warmer, 

and you’ll also be jostling with less tourists as 

the area isn’t quite as popular as the Western 

Mediterranean. You’ll be exploring the black 

sea, and can expect to visit Turkey, Greece, Italy, 

Croatia and Malta, to name a few. 

For those who want to save some money, Island 

Cruises are always a great choice. While the ships 

will be smaller this allows them to get into ports 

that some of the larger ships can’t access. 

Make notes on the type of cruise ship, ports of 

call required and price you roughly have in mind 

to spend. 

Usually ports of call govern the decision 

however, some choose certain ships for the on 

board entertainment catering for older people or 

young families. 

1) Every cruise line has a different style, 

e.g. Celebrity has a mature and luxurious feel. 

Carnival is just that - great for partiers, Disney is 

the ultimate family cruise, and Royal Caribbean 

specializes in activities on and off-board. 

2) Keep the season in mind. Northerly cruises 

are very popular including Alaska and the Baltic 

Sea but only run from late spring to early autumn. 

Warmer climates are generally offered year-round. 

3) A general rule - the longer and more 

expensive the cruise, the older the clientele. 

4) Most cruises don’t include alcoholic 

beverages, tips, off-shore transfers and off-shore 

activities. Make sure to factor those into your 

budget when planning your cruise. Opt for an 

inside cabin for even more savings. 

5) The larger the ship, the less chances you 

might be seasick. Try an inside cabin in the middle 

of the ship, where there is less movement to avoid 

nausea. 

6) Choose a cruise that fits your dining style. 

They can range from cafeteria style buffets to 

elegant sit down dinners. Food is never lacking on 

a cruise ship. 

7) School holidays and holiday times mean 

a ship full of children; off-season is quieter and 

you’ll often get a better deal. 

You can fly from Spain to a destination port. 

There is also the train to Barcelona which is a 

really good bonus to start any holiday. On arriving 

in Barcelona either stay overnight in this fabulous 

town or go straight to your chosen ship. 

There are many types of cruises so be sure to 

find the cruise that is best suited for you.

Christmas? 

Gonorrhoea is an STI caused 

by a bacteria called Neisseria 

Gonorrhoea or Gonococcus, and 

is transmitted by having oral, anal, or 

vaginal sex with a person who already 

has Gonorrhoea. The infection is spread 

through semen and vaginal fluids, but 

it can infect the eyes, mouth, and throat 

in addition to the vagina, cervix, uterus, 

fallopian tubes, urethra, and anus. 

Gonorrhea has been around as early as 

the 1500’s and there are many theories as 

to the origin of the slang terms: the clap 

and the drip. 

There are some differences in how 

gonorrhea presents in men vs women, 

but in general the most common reported 

symptoms in both men and women are: 

• Gonorrhoea discharge – For women and 

men, this includes abnormal discharge 

from the vagina or penis that may be 

green, yellow, or white. 

• Burning sensation while urinating – this 

symptom is common with other STDs and 

is an important sign to get tested. 

• Painful, burning and swollen glands in

throat – This is a very common sign of a 

gonorrhea infection from oral sex. 

Women can also have painful periods, 

bleeding between periods, pain 

during sex, abdominal pain, or a 

fever. 

Men can also have a less 

common symptom of swelling 

or pain in either or both 

testicles. 

Gonorrhea, the clap, can 

infect one or both eyes causing 

discharge, conjunctivitis (itchy, 

red eyes), or sensitivity to light. 

Gonorrhea can also spread or 

infect the anus causing Discharge, 

Bleeding, or Rectal pain. 

The infection can also be passed from 

a pregnant woman to her baby. If you’re 

pregnant and may have gonorrhoea, it’s 

important to get tested and treated before 

your baby is born. Without treatment, 

gonorrhoea can cause permanent 

blindness in a newborn baby. 

Gonorrhoea is not spread by kissing, 

hugging, swimming pools, toilet seats, 

or sharing baths, towels, cups, plates 

or cutlery. The bacteria cannot survive 

outside the human body for long.

I am leaving behind that steep ugly bank 

That was never appealing to eye or to foot 

For during this week I’ve become a large hole 

And into a skip my insides have been put 

By diligent workmen who toil all day long 

Sometimes there’s three - maybe four 

They carry my soil on shoulders so strong 

As my space becomes larger outside her front door. 

Its exciting to wonder what I shall become 

As my dimensions increase with each day 

These deep excavations would seem to suggest 

Foundations being made - deep into my clay. 

I’m waiting to see what will be delivered 

By a lorry tomorrow at 8 

A space has been cleared for blocks to be stacked 

And sand and cement - and bricks by the crate. 

I was proud of being an enormous steep bank 

Which helped to enclose and contain 

The large Spanish house where she lives alone 

Protecting from wind and from rain 

But now I’m excited at the change that’s about 

My future is looking so bright 

I’ll enclose an extension - of that I am sure 

It will make her house bigger - and let in more light. 

I’ll support it proudly, with all of my strength 

Not just a bank anymore 

But an extending large hole which will house ‘who knows what’ 

My function has changed and soon she’ll have a back door.

Cookery

Coffee + Walnut Cake 

This is a simple cake for every day, 

OR you can jazz it up to be a Celebration Cake. 

METHOD 

Cream together - 8 ozs. Sunflower Margarine + 8 ozs. Castor Sugar 

Slowly add - 3 large beaten eggs + 8 ozs. Self Raising Flour 

Stir in 1 tbspn strong coffee + a handful of Chopped Walnuts 

Divide mixture between 3 greased and lined 8 inch (20 cms.) sandwich tins 

(If you only have one tin, use it 3 times as the mixture only takes 10-15 minutes 

to cook) 

Bake at 180 degrees C for 10 to 15 minutes. 

(if it feels spongy to the touch, it is done - if it still looks wet on top, give it a few 

more minutes) 

When cool, sandwich together with coffee butter-cream. 

BUTTER-CREAM 

Beat together - 3 ozs. Sunflower Margarine + 8 ozs. Icing Sugar 

Add 2 tbspns Strong Coffee (or Tia Maria) 

Spread 1/3 on to each of the cakes and sandwich together. 

Scatter chopped walnuts over the top. Chill and slice. 

CELEBRATION CAKE 

For a special occasion, spread the buttercream on only 2 of the cakes. Sandwich 

together. 

Use the other 1/3 of the buttercream to coat the sides of the cake and press 

finely chopped walnut on to it. 

Coat the top with melted chocolate or coffee glace icing (4 ozs. icing sugar + 1 

tbsp strong hot coffee) 

Put into fridge to set, then decorate top with greetings, candles, etc..”

“There was no music in my early life. Then, 

my parents bought a radiogram. We had one 

record - “The Old Rugged Cross’ which was 

played endlessly. 

For my eleventh birthday I 

was given “How Much is that 

Doggie in the Window”. It 

drove my parents mad, 

so my brother and I only 

played it when we were 

in by ourselves. 

Later that year I was 

introduced to Classical 

Music at Grammar School. 

As first formers, we had our 

school dinner at first sitting, 

then had to go to the Great 

Hall for Junior Rest. This meant 

lying flat on the floor, regularly spaced, 

eyes shut. The duty teacher would put on a 

record of classical music and walked round 

the Hall, instructing us on how to relax. 

We started by thinking of our toes and 

slowly worked up our bodies, relaxing each 

part. It was quite hypnotic. By the time my 

concentration had travelled down my arms 

and into my hands - palms upward - I had 

drifted off to sleep to the strains of Swan 

Lake or Peer Gynt. 

This introduction to the light classics was 

reinforced by our monthly visit to hear the 

CBSO (City of Birmingham Symphony 

Orchestra) at Walsall Town Hall. I always 

regarded those afternoons as a real treat - 

unlike my classmates whose only positive 

opinion was :- “At least it gets us off lessons.” 

I was in the School Choir and learned how 

to play the Recorder. I desperately wanted 

a piano but we couldn’t afford to buy one. I 

was 15 when mum heard of someone 

who wanted to sell their piano for 

6 pounds. It was in our house 

before mum and dad realised 

that I would need to go for 

a weekly lesson which 

would have to be paid for. 

The disastrous 2 years 

of my Sixth form left no 

time for the piano, so I was 

never destined to become 

an adequate player. I soon 

noticed when I came home for 

my first holiday as a student, that 

the piano had gone and the sideboard 

was back in from the garage. 

I learned to play the Cello - again not 

adequately, but spent a couple of years in the 

College Orchestra. 

In the Student Lounge there was a record 

player so I was introduced to the delights 

of ‘Pop’ Music, and learned to jive to the 

‘Everly Brothers’. 

My best friend from school years had 

gone into Nursing and lived in the Nurses 

Home at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in 

Birmingham. It was only an hour away on 

the bus and on a particular Saturday night 

during the summer before I began teaching, 

I went to Mary’s party and discovered The 

Beatles.”

It’s therapeutic mending socks 

Using my Girl Guide skills 

Putting down a matrix of parallel lines 

Then weaving a web at right angles 

A perfect darn is a beautiful thing 

It pleasures my eye and I feel creative 

He never buys new nor replaces old socks 

So I am tested beyond belief 

Many hours of patience 

I will not face defeat. 

So again the socks can be worn 

And as the patches of darn begin to meet 

Covering more area than the original sock 

I have created something new 

What a triumph.

What a fantastic Christmas we all had. 

Such a lot of presents for Bentley. 

Alfie and I to open. Here is a photo 

of Alfie and I exhausted after opening and 

playing with our presents. As you can see they 

are all in our toy boxes. I say all. Bentley is 

not in the photo as he tends to take the toys 

to hide them. He is doing that right now. 

We are not bothered, as you can see we are 

really tired but have the comfort of the fire. 

Helping Santa was so enjoyable and I am 

sure he will ask us again next year to assist. 

Alfie gets very excited though. He goes to the 

toy box and sorts out the toy he likes most 

and then he runs around with it in his mouth, 

for people to notice him. However, this is 

short lived as Bentley usually takes it from 

him. They all share very well but if anyone is 

going to be grumpy it would be “Bossy Paws” 

Bentley. He is the smallest but in charge. 

We were bought some lovely, soft beds. I 

sleep enough now and I am very lazy and 

snore loudly but I just cannot resist sleeping 

that little bit extra on my lovely big feathered 

bed. Oh yes I am spoilt but I am worth it. 

Everyone hugs me, so I give them my “Special 

Look”. Yes they melt when they see this look. I 

am told I am gorgeous, handsome and have a 

kind nature and I “lap” it up. My bed is by the 

fire in the lounge and as you can see, I really 

enjoy the heat. 

I love being fussed. Bentley puts his paw 

in the air so he can be tickled on his tummy 

ha!! He likes to be independent but Alfie is my 

shadow. He cannot even sleep on his own. I 

suppose because he is the youngest. 

However, Valentines is just around the 

corner and I did think of contacting my lovely 

Tyson and Alfie taking a well earned nap.

When shooting Rawhide, it 

was said that an enterprising 

assistant spotted Eastwood 

and invited him to meet the 

director. Glassberg arranged 

for an audition although very 

impressed with Eastwood’s 

appearance and stature, then 

6’4” (193 cm), disapproved 

initially of his acting skills, 

remarking, “He was quite 

amateurish”. He attended 

drama classes and arranged 

for Eastwood’s initial 

contract in 1954, at $100 

per week. After signing, 

Eastwood was initially 

criticized for his stiff 

manner and delivering 

his lines through his 

teeth, a lifelong trademark. 

Rawhide was a major success 

for several years but were 

some of the most gruelling 

of Eastwood’s career, often 

filming six days a week for 

an average of twelve hours 

a day. In the show’s first 

season Eastwood earned $750 

an episode. At the time of 

Rawhide’s cancellation, he 

received $119,000 an episode 

as severance pay. 

In late 1963. Eastwood 

signed a contract for $15,000 in 

wages for eleven weeks’ work, 

with a bonus of a Mercedes 

automobile upon completion 

of Fistful of Dollars. 

Eastwood was instrumental 

in creating the Man with No 

Name character’s distinctive 

visual style and, although a 

non-smoker, Leone insisted

A Fistful of Dollars 

proved a landmark in 

the development of 

spaghetti Westerns. The 

Dollars trilogy films were

in rental earnings and turned 

Eastwood into a major film 

star 

Stardom brought more 

roles for Eastwood. He 

signed to star in the western 

Hang ‘Em High 1968. The 

film earned Eastwood a fee 

of $400,000 and 25 percent 

of its net box-office takings. 

Using money earned from 

the Dollars trilogy helped 

establish Eastwood’s own 

production company, Malpaso 

Productions. 

Before the release of Hang 

‘Em High, Eastwood had 

already begun working 

on Coogan’s Bluff. After 

receiving an offer of $1 

million—more than double 

his previous salary. Eastwood 

meet Don Siegel, a Universal 

contract director who later 

became Eastwood’s close 

friend, forming a partnership 

that would last more than ten 

years and produce five films. 

Eastwood films in the 1970s 

and 1980s, included the Dirty 

Harry films and has been 

described as being arguably 

Eastwood’s most memorable 

character 

Eastwood’s career reached a 

turning point in 1971. Before 

Irving Leonard died, he and 

Eastwood had discussed the 

idea of Malpaso producing 

Play Misty for Me, a film that 

was to give Eastwood the 

artistic 

control he desired, and 

his debut as a director. The 

film was highly acclaimed. 

Eastwood received 60 

percent of all profits from 

films he starred in and 

directed, with the rest going 

to the studio. Sudden Impact 

was his final on-screen 

collaboration with Locke. The 

line “Go ahead, make my day” 

(uttered by Eastwood during 

an early scene in a coffee 

shop) has been cited as one of 

cinema’s immortal lines. 

Eastwood in Gran Torino, 

which he also directed, 

produced and partly scored 

with his son Kyle and 

Jamie Cullum. Gran Torino 

eventually grossed over $268 

million in theatres worldwide. 

Eastwood is renowned for 

his efficient film directing and 

ability to reduce filming time 

and control budgets. 

Clint Eastwood has had 

numerous casual and longterm 

relationships. He was 

first married to Margaret 

“Maggie” Johnson in 1953, 

but while dating Johnson, he 

had another relationship. He 

had a 14 year long relationship 

with actress and stunt woman 

Roxanne Tunis that produced 

a daughter. Eastwood and 


Johnson were divorced. In 

1975, actress Sondra Locke 

began living with Eastwood. 

When they separated, Locke 

filed a palimony lawsuit. 

Eastwood had two children 

with stewardess Jacelyn 

Reeves in the 1980s. He 

married for the second 

time to news anchor Dina 

Ruiz in 1996, which lasted 

until 2013. Eastwood has 8 

children. 

Eastwood is a certified pilot 

and often flies his helicopter to 

the studios to avoid traffic. 

Eastwood has had a strong 

passion for music all his 

life, particularly jazz and 

country and western music. 

He is also a pianist and 

composer. Jazz has played an 

important role in Eastwood’s 

life from a young age and, 

although he never made it 

as a professional musician, 

he passed on the influence 

to his son Kyle Eastwood, 

a successful jazz bassist 

and composer. Eastwood 

developed as a boogie-woogie 

pianist early on and had 

originally intended to pursue 

a career in music by studying 

for a music theory degree after 

graduating from high school. 

Eastwood composed many 

of the film scores Clint is a 

true artist in every respect. 

Despite his years of being 

at the top of his game and 

the legendary movies he has 

made, it is said that he always 

made you feel comfortable 

and valued on the set, treating 

people as equals. 

Clint said, “Everybody 

wonders why I continue 

working at this stage. I keep 

working because there’s 

always new stories. ... And 

as long as people want me to 

tell them, I’ll be there doing 

them”.
