A Message from Rabbi Scott Roland
This might be an unpopular opinion, but I am so pleased with all of the snowfall we’ve had lately. If
it is winter, and if it is cold, there may as well be snow falling. If the sky is going to be gray, the
ground should be white. I might feel differently if I had a significant commute, but I find the snow to
be beautiful and festive. It begs us to stay in our pajamas a bit longer, to savor our morning coffee,
and to appreciate our immediate surroundings. Snow days are kind of like Shabbat, except we get
to watch movies and turn on the fireplace. At the same time, the snow invites us outside to play and
to embrace our inner child. We had a bit of an odd beginning to this winter. The weather remained
warm into January, winter break brought significant rain, and the eventual first layers of snow melted
quickly. Finally, the snow is falling regularly and seems as if it is here to stay for a while.
You may have noticed that snow is mentioned twice in the psalms we recite each morning during
Pesukei d’Zimra. The first mention is in Psalm 147. The psalm is about Divine strength, particularly
the feat of building and restoring the city of Jerusalem. Among praises related to the natural world,
we find, ) 41:741( ”
““ The Divine is the one who gives snow like fleece,
who scatters frost like ashes.” Surely you have experienced the wonder of waking up one morning,
looking out the window, and noticing a world that looks very different from the day before. Two
verses later, the psalm tells us, “The One issues a command and melts them, God breathes and the
waters flow.” It takes immense strength to make such a change. How fortunate are we to get to
witness such feats of strength!?
ֵ֣ הַנֹּתן שֶ ֵ֣ לֶג כַצָּ ָּ֑מֶ ר ְּ֝ כְ פ֗ ֹור ֵ֥ כָּאפֶר יְפַז ֵּֽר׃.
Psalm 148 reminds us that every aspect of creation stands in praise of God. Joining in the chorus
of praise we read, “ “ Fire and hail, snow and vapor, storm
wind that carries out God’s word.” Once again, the snow is used as an example of the fulfillment of
God’s command. As the Holy One of Blessing spoke the world into being at the moment of creation,
the processes of the natural world are a daily reminder of the wonders of creation. The psalm
concludes with a reminder that the Divine will lift up those of us who remain close to God.
It may be difficult to think about snow as a blessing when your back hurts from shoveling. It might
be challenging to recognize this wonder of creation when your car is stuck at the end of your
driveway. At the same time, this points to the key challenge of spiritual life. How do we sanctify the
ordinary? How do we remind ourselves to be grateful for God’s gifts in moments when we are hurt,
stuck, or frustrated? The psalms of Pesukei d’Zimra remind us that we have the opportunity to see
everything around us as a tool for praising the Divine, even a foot of snow on the driveway.
Bivracha, with blessing,
A Message from Martha Sivertson, Executive Director
February is one of those “in-between” months that seems to fill up with events for people dreaming
of spring. Aside from the National Football League’s Super Bowl, which, in one sense, can end
winter, there is Ground Hog’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Garden Shows (though probably just virtual
this year) and, most importantly, pitchers and catchers reporting for Spring Training in Florida and
Arizona. Yes, our Boys of Summer begin in February with high hopes of winning the World Series
just eight short months away. As we all practice calling our home-town boys, Guardians, let me
toss out a few other things to do this month (in no particular order):
· Sisterhood is recruiting all women, not just Sisterhood members, to get involved in a number
of activities. Get in touch with Irit Rawraway at gingit4@aol.com.
· The Tzedek committee is wrapping up their small appliance drive for Afghan refugees but
will surely be on to their next project soon. Get in touch with Deborah Coleman at
dacoleman18@gmail.com.
· Chesed will be on-going as are the needs of our congregants. They have a new reporting
system to identify these needs like when a congregant falls ill, there is a death in the
family, a new baby, or an occasional errand to be run. If you would like to be “on call” to
meet some of these needs, contact Martha Sivertson at martha@shaareytikvah.org.
· A Racial Consciousness group has formed since a USCJ workshop was held a few months
ago. This is a small group right now. They are formulating next steps to, possibly, bring
some of this learning to a broader audience. Stay tuned. Also, see Page 5 for the announcement
on the Racial Equity Study Group.
And, if all else fails, take that warm vacation! I will be off to Florida myself from the 16 th to the
22 nd to help my oldest sister pack up her Hobe Sound home and head back to New Jersey, our
familial stomping grounds. She has a small place there near a public garden where she and her
husband, may he rest in peace, spent many volunteer hours weeding and pruning and making
lifelong friends. She, too, has her eyes on SPRING…oh, and Pickleball! She plans to teach me between
box-packing. Maybe that’s what we can do with the south parking lot!
Stay well, everyone. We need you!
Tzedakah Opportunity
Immigrant Resettlement Tzedakah Project Update
This year, about 2000 immigrants are expected to be resettled in Cleveland, including 500 -700 Afghanis.
You can join the effort by bringing to the shul any of the household items listed below by February 23, 2022.
Contact Debbie, debbie@shaareytikvah.org or Martha, martha@shaareytikvah.org before stopping by with
items. The office is, generally, open at least from 9am to 5pm Mondays thru Thursdays.
Please box your items and include instruction manuals and accessories, if any (e.g. vacuum bags), and
attach a note with contact information and estimated value so we can send you an acknowledgment.
Making a direct monetary contribution is also a great option. That way the agency can choose what is
needed and we will avoid the pollution of multiple deliveries. We are currently working with USCRI
https://refugees.org/uscri-cleveland/.
Of course, the needs of the resettlement agencies and new arrivals extend far beyond the items listed. As
we learn of those needs, we will post more in future emails and GATEWAYS. Contact Deborah Coleman at
dacoleman418@gmail.com or 216.991.4510.
New or nearly new:
A Message from our President, Jessi Shapiro
I’m writing this on a typical winter day in Cleveland. The first winter I lived in Cleveland, 2007-08,
I often wondered how to dress for my bus commute downtown. When I asked about the next
day’s weather forecast, my husband Marc, a Cleveland native, invariably answered, “Cold, cloudy,
chance of snow.” And invariably, he was right.
It’s that kind of day today. Worse, there’s a good chance that tomorrow will be the same and that
there are many more cold, cloudy, chance-of-snow days to come before spring. Then there are
the ongoing or recurring stories in the national and international news. Add to that the seemingly
endless disruptions and isolation due to COVID-19, and it’s easy to feel stuck in a repeating loop
of gray and cold.
On a recent day like today, there was a bright spot. I had the pleasure of attending Rabbi Rachel
Brown’s Jewish Questions, Jewish Answers class via Zoom. At the end of the session, Rabbi
Brown asked us when we most feel that G-d is with us. I was stuck at that moment, mired in my
own narrow view of the world, preoccupied with my own shortcomings, worries, to-do lists. I felt as
far from connecting with the Divine as I did from the warmth of May.
But then something happened: I got an opportunity to help someone. As soon as I accepted the
opportunity, even before I actually helped anyone, the gray cloud around me started to lift. And I
realized that I feel most connected to G-d when I connect with other people.
In the early 2000’s, I used to call my grandmother while I was walking to Kabbalat Shabbat
services in Philadelphia. She was just tickled to think that my cell phone made it possible for me
to carry her along across city blocks. How the world had changed since her childhood on the
Lower East Side! The conversation always left me energized, out of work mode, and ready for
Shabbat.
Uplifting connections often happen for me in those in-between moments. A friend texts just to say
“hi” as I’m running out the door. I see a familiar face on Zoom and we have a short “how’s-itgoing”
moment before the meeting starts. No matter how brief the interaction, it changes my
trajectory, focuses me on the blessings in front of me.
Getting the opportunity to help another congregant was truly a blessing. I felt so privileged to
have the ability and time to help, that my winter blues started to dissolve from the moment I
accepted. The time we had to converse and connect was a blessing of its own. It truly felt like a
moment when G-d was with me.
I hope that you’re able to find that kind of joyful connection this month. Perhaps you’d like to
connect by helping with the refugee resettlement effort or by giving Men’s Club a hand at the
Kosher food pantry or by starting a new-to-you class? Maybe you know of someone who could use
a ride, a meal, or just a call to say hello? I’d love to hear how you’d like to connect, and to
connect with you at cstpresident@shaareytikvah.org
Jessi
Sisterhood Corner
Life goes by while we plow along. Except on certain occasions, when something monumental
happens and alters our path in a blink of the eye...
Saturday, Jan 15 th 2022, started as an ordinary day. By early afternoon, however, the news
about Beth Israel Synagogue in Texas, jolted the country, as many of us followed closely and
prayed for a good outcome for their Rabbi and three congregants who were held hostage.
After eleven extremely long, strenuous and scary hours, the hostages were freed unharmed.
A huge sigh of relief and enormous sense of gratitude was felt by so many across the
country and around the world.
We Jews often disagree about this topic or another with friends, coworkers, family members
and fellow congregants. But times like this remind us, and illuminate the fact, that our roots
and our Judaism connect us more than divide us at the end of the day. We know deep down
how our small community has been/is so amazingly wonderful especially in times of need.
Sisterhood Night Out, Sunday, January 23 was designed to allow us to pause and recall
great events from our Sisterhood past, and to recognize needs (perhaps changing needs)
wants and opportunities in the future. We know we got there together! We got to share some
of the activities, lifelong passions and goals in which some of our women have been
engaged more recently.
Let’s continue to keep our goals active and work the plan to our satisfaction while having fun
and as much laughter as possible.
Special thanks to the following women who have offered to share their passion/committee
topics/goals:
Deborah Coleman - Tzedakah Committee head - helping Afghans/refugees
Martha Sivertson - Chesed - helping members in need/being there for one another
Brynna Fish - Keshet/Rainbow (LGBTQ)
Sharon Fagin and Luisa Aviv—Race Consciousness – Being Inclusive
Marcia Silver - Repairing Climate & Saving Our Environment
The Village is an all-volunteer, non-profit membership organization serving older adults living in Cleveland’s
eastern Heights area suburbs. Shaarey Tikvah was thrilled to receive a grant to pay your membership in this
fine organization. The
Village provides no-cost services to members through the help of vetted and trained volunteers. For example,
they offer rides to/from doctors and grocers, telephone check-ins, and help with simple household or technical
tasks. Social, informational and wellness events are regularly scheduled.
For information on how to apply for membership,
call Martha at (216) 765-8300 ext. 101 or
martha@shaareytikvah.org. She can also connect you with several CST congregants
who are already enjoying the Village in the Heights community!
