HOOPS
The Gaffer
FIRSTLY, MAY I EXTEND A WARM WELCOME TO RUSSELL
MARTIN, HIS STAFF, PLAYERS AND ALL ASSOCIATED WITH
SWANSEA CITY FOOTBALL CLUB.
S
wansea have played a number
of games less than most teams
in the division and as such, are
sitting in a somewhat false lower league
position. We are very aware of the
quality they possess in their ranks and
the statistics highlight their ability to
dominate the ball and create numerous
problems for opposing teams. We need
to prepare well and deliver a
performance of intensity and purpose if
we are to emerge with the much
sought-after three points. Alas, due to
Covid protocols we are not permitted to
share a post-game drink with Russell
and his staff, but we wish everyone a
safe journey home.
I am writing these notes on the coach
as we return from a hard-earned
victory against a very strong Coventry
team. Very often, we have fallen foul
of not taking the rewards that a good
performance has justified – however,
on this occasion there is no doubt
that our opponents should feel very
frustrated at not emerging with the
spoils. They displayed a higher level
of intensity, especially in the second
half, and we rode our luck on several
occasions.
We started well, got an early goal
that was taken very calmly by Andre
Gray and should have been able to
go forward and control the game.
However, despite dominating the
closing stages of the half, we failed to
capitalise on some good opportunities
and were made to pay shortly after
the half-time break. A well-worked
corner was struck sweetly home and at
1-1 it was Coventry very much in the
ascendancy.
Despite our opponents dominating
much of the period, it was a moment
of quality, with Chris Willock crossing
for Albert Adomah to finish, that
sealed the win and allowed us to
leave the stadium with all the points
The players, I hope,
know that I will always
safely secured. In addition, we stood up
defensively and protected our goal with
an evident desire and resilience.
The players, I hope, know that I will always
seek to give an honest appraisal and we
know that the better team on the day
lost the game. However, the overriding
factor is that the players found a way to
win. Despite being way below our normal
level and despite missing players from
the squad, they dug in, showed character
and won the game and for that, they
deserve enormous credit.
As the players left the dressing room
prior to kick-off, we spoke about the
4000+ QPR fans who had made the trip
to Coventry to support the team. We
highlighted the responsibility we have as
a team to each and every supporter and
set the target of being able to ensure
they all enjoyed the journey home. I hope
very much that this was indeed the case!!
Last week’s victory over West Brom
was significant for many reasons of
course, however one key aspect must
be highlighted as it deserves so much
praise. In starting the game, Albert
Adomah broke the Championship
appearance record by competing in his
456th fixture, a quite remarkable feat.
Not only should Albert take much pride
in recording this number of appearances,
but also in his level of professionalism,
his work ethic, his desire to impact
both individually and collectively, plus
of course his love for QPR! Albert is a
pleasure to have in the squad and is
undoubtedly highly regarded by everyone
at the club. My sincere congratulations to
‘Uncle’ on this magnificent achievement.
Finally, we now enter a run of games that
involves playing on average once every
four days for the next six weeks. The
squad will be challenged and demands
will be faced and there will be occasions
when we have to dig deep. However,
with your continued support playing
a vital role, I hope very much that we
can continue to deliver the level of
performance that ensures you enjoy
watching the team play.
Enjoy the game!
UNCLE ALBERT
TOPS THE LIST
THERE was plenty to
celebrate after the Hoops’
dramatic late win over West
Brom earlier this month –
and that included a personal
distinction for Albert Adomah.
The popular QPR winger became,
in terms of appearances, the
most experienced player at
Championship level by clocking up
his 456th game in the second tier.
Aside from two Premier
League outings during his time
at Middlesbrough, Adomah
has been operating in the
Championship ever since August
2010, when Bristol City signed
him from Barnet.
He also featured for Boro at
this level, as well as Aston Villa,
Nottingham Forest and Cardiff
before signing for Rangers in
October 2020.
The West Brom game moved
Adomah moved ahead of
previous record holder Luke
Chambers, the former Forest
and Ipswich defender who is
currently at Colchester.
Blackpool centre-back Richard
Keogh – who is also a popular
figure among QPR fans, for
different reasons – is third on the
list, with recent Rangers arrival
David Marshall in fourth place.
FIXTURE CHANGES
QPR’s Championship clash
against Millwall at the Den has
been rearranged for Tuesday
15th February, kick-off 7.45pm.
The game was originally
scheduled to be played 10 days
earlier, but Rangers’ progression
to the FA Cup fourth round
on the same date forced a
postponement.
As a result, the club requested
that the trip to Barnsley three
days earlier on Saturday 12th
February – originally moved to
8pm for live coverage on Sky
Sports – revert to its original
3pm kick-off time.
QPR chief executive Lee Hoos
said: “I would like to apologise
to fans for the inconvenience
caused and clarify the reasons
for the change back to 3pm.
“We were concerned by the very
limited recovery time available for
the squad. Travelling back from
Barnsley after an 8pm fixture, to
arrive home in the early hours of
Sunday morning before visiting
Millwall on Tuesday, presented a
significant issue.
“I would like to thank both the
EFL and Sky for their assistance
in changing the kick-off time back
to 3pm at the request of QPR.”
Fans who have been financially
impacted by purchasing nonrefundable
fares are advised to
contact the club. Visit www.qpr.
co.uk for further information.
Meanwhile, Rangers’ visit to
Sheffield United, which was
postponed last month following
an outbreak of Covid-19 cases
at the club, has now been
rescheduled for Tuesday 5th
April, kick-off 7.45pm.
A SUDDEN SHORTAGE OF
GOALKEEPERS FORCED QPR TO ACT
SWIFTLY – AND DAVID MARSHALL
ANSWERED THE SOS CALL. THE
EXPERIENCED SCOTLAND STOPPER HAD
WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC 13

HOOPS
David, your move to QPR
came about very quickly,
was it a straightforward decision for
you to make?
It was a whirlwind couple of days, really.
Making the decision was not an issue –
I was going to leave Derby during January
anyway, but I was keen not to let it get
to the end of the window. Sometimes
that’s out of your hands because clubs
like to do their business late in the
month. I spoke to (goalkeeping coach)
Gavin Ward on Monday afternoon, then
I got a call at 6.30pm and the plan was
to get down as soon as possible and
train on Tuesday. We couldn’t get the
paperwork done until the next day but I
managed to train with Gavin on Tuesday
afternoon. It was an easy decision to
make because there was an opportunity
to play straight away and the cherry on
top of the cake was that QPR are flying
high in the league. So I got a clear sense
that it was the right place for me.
It’s often the way, but of course the
opportunity came about through
someone else’s misfortune – you must
have sympathy for Jordan Archer?
I know Jordan personally from our time
together with Scotland, we have a good
relationship and yes, it’s an awkward
feeling when you benefit from another
player’s disappointment. I saw him do his
shoulder at the end of the penalty shootout
and that was terrible luck. It was good
to see him at the training ground the
other day, from what I understand the
surgery went well and hopefully he’ll keep
making good progress.
How did you find your debut against
West Brom? I’d imagine a win and a clean
sheet must have ticked the right boxes…
Yes, I couldn’t really have asked for more
than a 1-0 win! I enjoyed the fact it was
14 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

HOOPS
So I got a clear sense that it
was the right place for me
a vital promotion game – going straight
into a huge match against a rival like
West Brom added to it. They were ahead
of us in the table going into the game,
so to beat them was important – it
gives the boys a bit more belief and the
atmosphere around the stadium was
incredible too. It was a big win for the club.
Having spent the majority of your
career in the Championship – and won
the title with Cardiff City in 2013 –
what do you feel a team needs to be
successful at this level?
Nice of you to mention the high point,
because I’ve experienced life at both
ends of this league! I know it’s a cliché but
consistency really is the key – that’s the
reason the boys have got to where they
are and it’s vital to keep it rolling, chipping
away and putting pressure on the teams
around us and taking our chances against
rivals when those come along. It’s only a
big result if you follow it up with another
and you can’t afford to let yourselves get
either too high, or too low on the back of
one game. What’s also important is that
the quality of the squad is there – at the
moment we’re missing a few lads who are
away at the Africa Cup of Nations, yet the
quality is still really high.
During those eight years at Cardiff, you
must have experienced some keenlycontested
battles against tonight’s
opponents, Swansea City…
The first few years I was at Cardiff, we
certainly did – and then Swansea got
WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC 15

HOOPS
QPR have given me an
opportunity and hopefully I
can repay the club. It’s a
massive few months coming
up and we’re in a good
position, so there’s no reason
why we can’t be thinking
about promotion
promoted to the Premier League, so
we were trying to catch them up. Once
we did go up, it was a big moment for
me to play in the first Welsh derby in the
Premier League and we managed to win
that one, 1-0 at home, although they
beat us in the return game at the Liberty
Stadium. Swansea do have a unique style
of playing – certainly different to most
Championship teams – and I think Russell
Martin’s added to that since he’s been
there. If they get a run together, they’ll
certainly be targeting the play-offs.
You mentioned Swansea boss Russell
Martin, someone you played with at
international level – was he always
one you’d have expected to become a
coach or manager?
I know Russell quite well, he’s a good
mate and I hope things go well for him,
just not this evening obviously! He always
seemed like one of the players within the
squad who had a future in coaching – he
was captain at Norwich for a long time
and a strong voice in any dressing-room.
I’ve run into Russell a few times since he
finished playing because the coaching
licences also take place where the
national squads are based and he had a
great start at MK Dons, which got him
the opportunity to manage Swansea. He
HOOPS
That was a big occasion
at a fantastic stadium and
it’d be amazing to top this
season off at Wembley, as
long as we win!
doesn’t deviate from his style of football
regardless of results, he sticks to his
principles and always will do.
On the subject of Scotland, you’re not
too far off 50 caps – presumably that
must be an added incentive to perform
well for QPR, with the World Cup playoffs
coming up?
It’s been a strange few months in that
regard. Obviously I’ve played for Scotland
over the last three or four years, including
the European Championships last
summer, so then not being involved at
all with Derby has been tough. Playing
for Scotland again is in the back of your
mind, but first and foremost you have
to be thinking about club football – if
you’re not playing and performing, you’re
never going get those international
caps. QPR have given me an opportunity
and hopefully I can repay the club. It’s
a massive few months coming up and
we’re in a good position, so there’s no
reason why we can’t be thinking about
promotion. If that goes well, then I’m sure
the Scotland thing takes care of itself.
You kept a clean sheet against England
at Wembley in the Euros last summer –
what would you say to a return visit in
May for the Championship play-off final?
That was a big occasion at a fantastic
stadium and it’d be amazing to top this
season off at Wembley, as long as we win!
But, before we start thinking about the
play-offs, let’s try and get ahead of that
lottery – I honestly think it’s possible.
HOOPS
Columnist
I
THE JOURNALIST AND BROADCASTER PENS HIS
LATEST COLUMN…
’m starting to believe anything is
possible with this QPR team.
As I looked ahead to Coventry, reflecting
on the progress they’ve made and momentum
they’d gathered under Mark Robins in recent
seasons – not to mention their impressive
showing even in defeat here at Rangers in
September, I’d have taken a point.
I believe we’ve played far better on numerous
occasions this year. The performance on
Saturday, though, was a rugged display against
a strong side. We were under intense pressure –
and produced two pieces of attacking quality to
win the game. Indeed, it was the kind of display
which characterises promotion-winning teams.
Believe me, I’ve seen my fair share of those
in 20 years covering the EFL, and we’re now
in contention for automatic promotion for
good reason.
I had planned to get to Coventry, but GB News’
new weekend breakfast duo of Anne Diamond
and Stephen Dixon invited me to appear on their
show to preview the day’s football and discuss
the latest on the Novak Djokovic saga.
It left me cutting it fine to reach Coventry by
train, especially as planned engineering works
meant a rail replacement bus service on part of
the journey. I was tired after getting up for work
at 4am, and I faced a similar wake-up time for
work the following day. I ruefully gave it a miss.
QPR made a brief chat about football
shirts during Anne and Stephen’s Sunday
morning show – the latter even challenging
me to post a picture of myself in a QPR top on
Twitter. As you can see, that’s exactly what I did.
The ‘Dennis the Menace’ number always goes
down well with Rangers fans and neutrals alike.
Finally, a word on the support at Coventry – it
was nothing short of magnificent, as it has been
away from home throughout the campaign. We
shall keep it up, I’ve no doubt.
OPPOSITION
OVERVIEW
O P P O S I T I O N O V E R V I E W
ASIDE from their rapid rise and fall during the late 70s and early
80s, Swansea’s recent seven-year spell in the Premier League
ranks as the pinnacle of the club’s history.
Known as Town until city status was conferred on Swansea in
1969, the South Wales side won three promotions in four years
under the stewardship of John Toshack – only to drop back to the
bottom rung of the Football League ladder even more swiftly.
But Swansea’s star rose again following their move from the Vetch
Field in 2005 and they worked their way up again, ascending to the
top flight in 2011 and winning the League Cup – the first major
trophy in their history – two years later.
Relegation in 2018 inevitably led to a rebuilding process, with the
task initially handed to Graham Potter and then Steve Cooper, who
steered the Swans to the play-offs in successive seasons.
Cooper’s departure last summer meant the baton passed to former
MK Dons boss Russell Martin, but it has been a patchy campaign so
far, with the team hovering around lower to mid-table.
Russell Martin is in his
second managerial
post, having taken
over at Swansea after
almost two seasons in
charge of MK Dons.
During almost nine
years at Carrow Road,
Martin twice helped
the Canaries to secure
promotion to the
Premier League,
captaining them in the
second of those
The 36-year-old took
his first steps into
coaching while still a
player at Walsall,
eventually moving to
Milton Keynes for a
final swansong in
January 2019.
Martin featured in the
side that clinched
promotion to League
One, but hung up his
boots during the
following season when
the Dons invited him to
take charge after Paul
Having initially kept
THE expiry of Freddie
Newcastle allowed
Hamer the opportunity
to establish himself as
Swansea’s number one
keeper has certainly
done that this season.
Beginning his career at
Reading, the 34-yearold
impressed during
three separate loan
and a three-year spell
between the posts for
Charlton, helping the
Addicks to gain
promotion from League
He moved on to
Leicester, making 12
Premier League
appearances for the
Foxes and seven more
for Huddersfield,
leaving the Yorkshire
side a year ago to join
Swansea as back-up to
Woodman.
With more than 200 Swansea
appearances under his belt, Kyle
Naughton has been an integral
part of the Welsh club’s defence
since his arrival from Tottenham
seven years ago.
Having launched his career with
hometown side Sheffield United,
the England Under-21
international eventually moved to
Spurs in 2009 alongside fellow
Naughton was also loaned out to
Middlesbrough, Leicester and
Norwich before eventually
departing White Hart Lane
permanently in 2015, with
Swansea stumping up a £5m fee
ROUTLEDGE
FLYING winger Wayne Routledge became a popular figure at
QPR when he arrived from Aston Villa in 2009 – having turned
down a permanent move to Cardiff, where he had been on loan.
After scoring seven times in 49 appearances for the R’s, the former
Crystal Palace and Tottenham man signed for Newcastle and
helped the Magpies to clinch the 2009/10 Championship title.
However, Routledge moved back to W12 on loan the following
January, playing a pivotal role during the second half of the
campaign as he went on to repeat that title success with Neil
Warnock’s side.
He joined Swansea that summer and spent a memorable decade
among the Jack Army, playing in the club’s 2013 League Cup
triumph and netting 33 goals in 304 appearances before eventually
hanging up his boots last year.
HOOPS
OUR CLUB AMBASSADOR’S
VIEWS ON ALL THINGS QPR…
G
ood evening everyone and welcome
back to the Kiyan Prince Foundation
Stadium for tonight’s game against
Swansea City.
After losing in the play-off final last season,
Swansea had a new head coach in Russell
Martin take charge just before the season
started, but have had an indifferent campaign
to date and currently sit in 17th position in the
table. I am sure they will be looking to improve
that league position in the second half of the
season as they have a talented squad and
come here on the back of two good results.
They drew away at Huddersfield and won at
home on Saturday against Preston, so they
will come here full of confidence. Like every
team in this division, they will provide tough
opposition for us to overcome and get the
three points we are hoping for.
We come into tonight’s game having won our
last four league matches, which has put us
in a very good position in the table. Since my
last notes, we have picked up two tremendous
victories against West Brom and Coventry. In
the West Brom game, Charlie Austin came off
the bench to head a late winner against his
old club after great work from Chris Willock.
I thought we played extremely well in the
second half and really got at a very good and
well organised team. I said on commentary
with Nick London, who is great to sit alongside
at every game, that when we play at a high
intensity in the way we close opponents down,
move the ball quickly and put them under
pressure, we are a very good side. We also
defended really well throughout and it was
great to get a clean sheet – that always gives
you the platform to win games. That win felt
like a big three points as we leapfrogged West
Brom in the table.
We were then faced with another tough
game on Saturday, when we made the trip
up to Coventry and came away with another
tremendous three points after a 2-1 victory.
Having taken an early lead with a very good
finish from Andre Gray – again after excellent
work from Chris Willock – Coventry really
came back at us very strongly. New signing
David Marshall was called into action several
times in the opening half-hour and showed
what a very good goalkeeper he is with vital
saves to keep us in front. I was impressed with
Coventry on the day and you can see why
they’ve enjoyed a good season so far. They
scored a stunning equaliser before the game
was immediately stopped due to an incident in
the crowd. It is something we have seen a few
times recently and full credit must go to all the
medical personnel who were quickly on hand
to deal with the situation facing them. I speak
for everyone when I sincerely hope the person
involved is safe and well and makes a speedy
HOOPS
recovery and I send them the best wishes of
everyone connected to QPR.
Due to the incident that took place, the game
was stopped for some 13 minutes, which
must be very difficult for all the players to stay
focused as they wait for the restart. Once it
did resume, Coventry pushed us hard but we
again showed good grit and determination
to withstand what they threw at us and it was
brilliant to see Albert Adomah head home a
fine Willock cross and win us the game. We
were not at our best on Saturday and when this
happens it is so important to pick up points, so
to get all three was fantastic.
Due to the position we have got ourselves into,
it seems every game is now an important one
and tonight will be no different. We will be going
all out to get another valuable three points but
know we will have to really work hard and play well
to do that.
I think it is very important to take each game as
it comes and just focus on ourselves, making
sure our preparation and performances are
where they need to be. Get this right and you
will usually get the results you are striving for.
Mark and his staff, all the players and everyone
behind the scenes at the club have worked
incredibly hard and we are in a very good
position. However, we all know that there is so
much work still to be done and a long way to go
this season, so we must remain totally focused
on the job in hand and the next challenge. That
challenge is tonight and one to look forward to.
I have to mention our supporters again and
say what incredible backing you are giving the
team both at home and away. The atmosphere
and noise here in the second half against West
Brom was brilliant and then we had 4000 fans
travelling to support the team at Coventry
– amazing and thank you for that support. It
really is so appreciated and does make a huge
difference to the players.
There is a real togetherness around the club at
present, on and off the pitch, and this will be so
important in the coming weeks and months ahead.
Get behind the team again tonight. Be loud and
be proud of who we are. We are QPR!
Enjoy the game,
HOOPS
MIKE, it’s been 40 years since our
run to the 1981/82 FA Cup final,
but it only seems like yesterday,
doesn’t it?
It does. We had a great run in the cup
and I have good recollections of those
games – particularly in the later stages
of the competition.
One of the biggest fixtures was
Crystal Palace at home in the
quarter-finals. It was a huge
needle game as several QPR men
– Terry Venables, Terry Fenwick, Clive
Allen and yourself – had previously
been at Palace…
It was a big fixture for me especially,
because Terry Venables originally took
me to Crystal Palace when he was
there and I wouldn’t say I had the best
of times. Then when Terry moved to
QPR, I was one of three players who
followed him, so it was nice to play my
old club and get a result on the day. It
was a really tight game and there
wasn’t much in it. Palace had a very
good side at the time and it was end to
end stuff, with the crowd right behind
us. We left it very late as Clive Allen
managed to snatch the only goal with a
couple of minutes to go – that secured
the result and put QPR into the
semi-finals.
We had the plastic Omniturf pitch
at Loftus Road during the cup run
and critics used to say that it gave
us a big advantage. Did the surface
suit our players?
It suited us as a side, yes. But from
what I can remember, our league
form was always very good at home
before the artificial playing surface
was installed. Then when the Omniturf
came along, I think it did give us an
advantage. You don’t need plastic
nowadays though as the grass
pitches in the present era are totally
different to what we were used to in
the 70s and 80s.
HOOPS
On to the semi-final against
top-flight West Brom at Highbury,
all the build-up before the game
was about Albion’s in-form striker
Cyrille Regis. The pundits said he
was unstoppable…
Cyrille was a very good player, a top
goalscorer and obviously one of their
danger men. But big Bob Hazell had a
fantastic game for Rangers at the
back, along with Glenn Roeder. Bob
kept Cyrille very quiet in the game and
didn’t give him too many chances.
Again, it was a very close match and it
was always going to be the one goal
that would decide it.
Clive Allen scored the winner for us in
the 72nd minute when he blocked a
clearance by West Brom defender Ally
Robertson and the ball cannoned into
the net. It must have been a
tremendous feeling at the final whistle…
We were lucky enough that Clive got
himself on a clearance and it
rebounded into the goal. QPR had a lot
of fans there on the famous North
Bank. In fact, we had great support
right through the cup run. And when
the players got back into our
dressing-room at Highbury, it was an
unbelievable scene with all the
celebrations going on. I think we were a
little bit shell-shocked that we had
actually got ourselves to the final!
Let’s talk about your style of play,
Mike. You played wide left for us –
was that always your position during
your career?
I appeared as a wide player in my early
days at Charlton Athletic, but then they
sold centre-forward Derek Hales and
the manager started to play me as a
striker. I did really well up there.
However, it was always tough to get
decent left-sided players in those days.
So when I linked up with Terry Venables,
I found myself playing out on the left
again and I quite enjoyed that role at
HOOPS
QPR. We had a very good attacking
side, with Simon Stainrod and Clive
Allen supported by John Gregory as a
forward-running midfielder, so I was
pleased to be part of that.
On to the final against Tottenham
Hotspur at Wembley Stadium. In that
period, it was the biggest match on
the football calendar, wasn’t it?
Without a doubt. I sat indoors on many
occasions watching the FA Cup final
and you would see the big build-up
– the team coaches arriving at the
stadium, all the players getting off.
Then the pre-match things that went
on, the warm-ups, meeting the Royal
Family before kick-off and the game
itself. It was an amazing day.
What was the preparation like for the
Rangers players ahead of the final?
We had a good night in the hotel on
the eve of the match, everyone was in
good spirits. I don’t know if the lads
got a decent sleep though because of
the huge occasion the next day. But
we went out at Wembley and gave it
our best shot.
We forced a 1-1 draw against
Tottenham in the first game. Glenn
Hoddle gave Spurs the lead before
Terry Fenwick headed our equaliser…
Yeah, I can remember Hoddle scoring
after we got ourselves in a little bit of a
mess around the edge of the box.
Then we were pushing to try to get an
equaliser. We had a throw-in on the
left, it got a little bit of a flick-on and
Terry had come up from the back. He
managed to get his head on it and
scored to put us back in the game.
You had a good career - what did it
mean to you personally to appear in
an FA Cup final?
There were so many great footballers
who had played in the 1960s and
1970s and never got to the final. So it
was an amazing day for me, something
HOOPS
His man-management was
really good. He was very
friendly with the players,
always chatty and he liked
a bit of a joke with the lads
and stuff like that
you would never forget. Maybe you
thought you would never get there.
QPR did well, as a Division Two side
against a top Division One club, to take
them to a replay. I thought we did
ourselves and the club proud. Terry
Venables performed magnificently to
put that Rangers team together. We all
got on well with one another as a tight
group, so we would help each other
out on the pitch and that carried us
right the way through our FA Cup run.
What was Terry Venables like as a
manager?
His man-management was really good.
He was very friendly with the players,
always chatty and he liked a bit of a joke
with the lads and stuff like that. But he
set out how he wanted us to play. We
had a 4-4-2 formation and we all had
our roles in the side. Terry used to say
to us: “Look, you’ll have some good
games, you’ll have some bad games.
But at the end of the day, you’ve got
your jobs to do in the team. As long as
you do them, you will stay in the
starting line-up.” I’ve seen one or two
interviews and programmes about
Terry on the box and he was very bright
in his coaching, with lots of new ideas. I
thought it held us in good stead for the
three or four years that Terry was in
charge at QPR and he did a great job as
manager of the club.
The replay took place at Wembley on
the following Thursday evening and
we did everything but score in that
1-0 defeat…
There wasn’t much in either of the
games against Tottenham. Sometimes
it is all about the team that gets the
opening goal. Spurs went ahead in the
first game and we fought back – then in
the replay, it was very close again. I
suppose there were chances at both
ends that could have been taken. But it
was Spurs who went on to win the cup
with a penalty by Hoddle.
You are now 69 years old, Mike – what
are you up to these days?
I’m retired from work now. I haven’t
been to many professional football
matches lately, but I go to watch
Billericay Town FC who are just down
the road from me. In fact, I was
surprised to bump into Clive Allen in
the club bar at one of the matches just
recently! We had a good chat about
some of the things that happened
back in the old days. I also currently do
a little bit of coaching with the
Under-23 players at Brentwood Town
FC, so I am keeping myself busy. I still
look out for the QPR results and follow
my old teams. It is nice to see the R’s
doing well again.
THE PROGRAMME: 16 pages, price 30p
A BATTLING performance by Queens Park
Rangers earned a replay in very windy
conditions by the seaside.
After QPR held their own for the opening 45
minutes, Division Four outfit Blackpool
reverted to a very direct approach. Towering
striker Dave Bamber featured prominently as
their target man, with crosses and set-plays
peppering the danger area.
Indeed, the home side might have been
awarded a penalty 10 minutes after the
break. Ronnie Blair definitely appeared to be
impeded by R’s centre-half Ernie Howe in the
box. However, referee Keith Hackett ignored
noisy protests by the hostile home crowd and
waved play on.
Despite all the pressure, Rangers held firm,
with man of the match Peter Hucker pulling
off a string of sprawling saves in goal.
Blackpool manager Allan Brown was incensed
by the main talking point and he said
afterwards: “It should have been a penalty.”
Brown didn’t comment on another
controversial incident where QPR midfield
maestro Tony Currie leapt up to punch the ball
away from Bamber’s head right in front of goal.
Hoops boss Terry Venables was in a more
relaxed mood after the final whistle. He told
the waiting press pack: “We didn’t perform well
today, especially in the second half, but I am
still very pleased with this result. It will be a
different story at Loftus Road for the replay.”
In the News of the World match report, Martin
Leach wrote: “Rangers live to fight again on
their own artificial turf, thanks to Blackpool’s
bad finishing and referee Keith Hackett’s
strength of mind.
“…After a rocky start, Rangers began to take
over against a side that curiously tried to
out-football possibly the Second Division’s
most talented team.
“…when Blackpool at last began to bustle and
push in the second half, Rangers disappeared.
Glenn Roeder and goalkeeper Peter Hucker
were heroes in the siege, but chances were
thrown away.
“Referee Hackett’s moment of truth came
after 55 minutes. Blackpool looked worth a
penalty when Ronnie Blair was flattened by
Ernie Howe. Certainly it looked easier to give
a spot-kick than refuse it. But Hackett – last
season’s FA Cup final ref – stood firm.”
How did you get scouted?
I got scouted playing Sunday league for my local
side Ickenham Youth. I played there from when
I was seven until I got picked up by QPR. The
majority of the boys in the team got picked up
by other clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea.
Have you always played in the same position?
I got picked up as an U9s forward and have
been all over the pitch, position wise, going
through the early development phases at QPR.
I played midfield and full-back until around
U13s, when I first played at centre-half and
have been there ever since. I’ve seen many
players and coaches come and go over the
years, however the philosophy of the first team
is seen throughout the academy.
What’s been the highlight of your career so far?
Probably receiving my scholarship, which is a
reward for my hard work over the years. Not just
me but also my parents, who have travelled miles
and put in the hours to help me get to training
and matches. To be full-time, you’re living the
professional footballer lifestyle and becoming
accustomed to being in every day, which can be
physically and mentally demanding at first.
Who’s your favourite player/inspiration?
My favourite player is Sergio Ramos – he’s
aggressive but also composed on the
ball, which is what a centre-back needs in
modern football. He has been one of the
best defenders in the world for the past 10
years and he’s won everything there is to win
trophy-wise. It shows the winning mentality
he has and how that’s impacted his personal
performances and his team’s.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
I’m hopeful I will be playing first-team football
consistently – QPR is the dream. However, I’ll
be grateful just to be playing in a first team
consistently for someone, as high up the
league ladder as possible!
What are your targets for the rest
of the season?
To secure myself another contract at the
club and to keep developing as a player,
becoming a more powerful and commanding
defender. Hopefully I can get minutes with
the U23s in the second half of the season
which will be a test, while giving me the best
preparation for the possibility of playing 23s
football next year.
An interesting article by
Alan Smith in the Guardian
newspaper, back in 2015,
explained how the Saudi
Super Cup had come to
Loftus Road…
“What had started off as
a pipe dream of the Saudi
Arabia Football Federation
(SAFF) to take their season
curtain-raiser on the road
became a reality when they
realised both teams would
be in Austria for pre-season
training. At that juncture,
with both clubs happy for the
game to be held overseas,
the federation sent a party to
London to secure a location
to host the game. ‘We chose
London because of the
amount of expatriates living
here and also the amount of
tourists,’ SAFF’s Mohammed
Ahmed told the Guardian.
They scouted some other
venues, including Fulham’s
Craven Cottage but, keen for
a cosy atmosphere, decided
upon W12. Then there
46 WWW.QPR.CO.UK // @QPR // @OFFICIALQPR // OFFICIALQPRFC

HOOPS
were the political and social
considerations. ‘We wanted
to show off the best of Saudi
Arabia,’ Ahmed says. ‘We are
passionate about football,
it is our national sport and
we wanted to spread the
word.’ The ferocious din
that greeted the teams as
they made their way on to
the pitch, the fervour with
which the national anthem
was sung, and the incessant
cheers of support would
suggest the venture was a
success, even if there was a
sense that the majority here,
who forked out between
£25 and £75 for a seat, were
already converted.
It was genuinely a lot of fun
and the hope, according to
SAFF, is that on the back of
this success it will become
an annual event. ‘We want to
show our football off around
the world and we want this to
happen again,’ Ahmed said.
The match was big news
in Saudi Arabia. Both teams
share the King Fahd stadium
in Riyadh and regularly attract
crowds of 50,000
for important league games.
The national broadcaster,
MBC, showed the game
live, the press area was
oversubscribed, and the
game was expected to be
the lead story in newspapers
back home...
The concept of playing
these type of games abroad
may be relatively new, but
the idea appears destined
to increase in popularity.
Others in Europe have tried,
notably with France’s Trophée
de Champions and Italy’s
Supercoppa and, considering
his previous desire to play a full
set of league games around
the world, it cannot be much
longer before the Premier
League’s chief executive,
Richard Scudamore, is
angling for the Community
Shield to be played away from
Wembley too.”
WONDERFUL STORIES...
JIMMY CORKHILL
I DISCOVERED many years ago that inviting a
lady to watch QPR away from home was a really
good way of getting to know her. But it could
also be the make-or-break point in a budding
relationship.
Back in the 1990s, I was dating someone who I
will call ‘Tina’. She seemed very streetwise when
we were out and about in London.
But problems arose when I asked her to
accompany me to see the R’s play up at Everton.
I quickly discovered that she was very naive
about the rest of the country and had no idea
how to behave.
Just before we set off on the train from Euston,
an excited Tina said: “Ooh, so what’s the
Liverpool area like then?”
And I replied: “Well, it’s like Brookside on the telly.”
“What are you talking about Tony?” she said.
“They all talk like the people on Brookside.”
“Oh don’t be so stupid!”
“What do you mean?”
“Nobody talks like that. It’s a made-up accent
for the television. It would be really ridiculous if
people spoke in those voices in real life.”
“Yeah, they do. They’re called Scousers.”
“No, I don’t believe you. You‘re winding me up.”
Anyway, when we arrived at Liverpool Lime
Street Station, we jumped in a taxi to get to
Goodison Park. The cab driver started talking
and Tina was amazed that the Brookside accent
did actually exist.
She said: “Ooh, you sound just like Jimmy
Corkhill! Ooh, say this...‘Calm down, calm down
Terry or I’ll call the bizzys’...Come on, I want to
hear you say it!”
The bemused cabbie played along with her and
repeated the stereotyped Liverpudlian phrase.
But he gave me a strange look when we arrived
at the stadium and I paid the fare.
Rangers won the match 5-3.
|| MEMORY LANE||
AS A SPORTS JOURNALIST WITH THE EALING GAZETTE,
MIKE DONOVAN WAS A MAINSTAY OF THE LOFTUS ROAD
PRESS BOX IN THE 1970S AND 1980S. IN EACH MATCHDAY
PROGRAMME, HE LOOKS BACK ON THOSE UNFORGETTABLE
DAYS OF COVERING QUEENS PARK RANGERS…
ROBBIE James and Jeremy
Charles were on opposite
sides when QPR played
Oxford United in the 1986
Milk Cup final; the former
joining his suffering Rangers
team-mates in their
disappointment as the ontarget
latter celebrated a 3-0
Wembley triumph.
But the pair were on the
same side for Swansea in
1981 as today’s visitors
completed a remarkable
odyssey of moving from the
fourth division to the first in
five seasons. In fact, Charles
made his competitive career
debut as a substitute for
midfielder James as the
Swans beat Newport County
in August 1976.
More relevantly for home
readers of this column,
James and Charles wore the
hooped shirt together in the
mid-1980s when former
Oxford boss Jim Smith was
in charge in W12; following
another Swansea lad,
Leighton James, who played
on the wing for Rangers in
the late 1970s. They were
Swansea Jacks – a common
nickname of someone from
the south Wales city and one
proudly used by Cliff Jones,
a legendary Wales flanker
who was exiled in the English
capital at Tottenham , to
describe himself – in a new,
albeit temporary, home.
I remember feeling for
Charles when he arrived at
QPR for £100,000 in 1983,
moving from the Vetch Field,
the predecessor to the Swans’
Liberty Stadium, in the wake
HOOPS
of the Welsh club’s relegation
from the top flight as Rangers
were promoted to it.
The natural line for an
introductory feature was clear
to me – for the Gazette’s sake
rather than my own – when we
sat down together in a light,
airy office overlooking South
Africa Road. What’s it like
to follow in the footsteps of
famous relatives? Charles was
the son of former Swan and
Arsenal defender/striker Mel
and the nephew of dad’s fabled
brother John, considered the
greatest Wales international of
all in certain circles.
My instinct was and remains
that anyone would want to
prove their own worth, rather
than rely on reflected glory.
After all, it is a risky business
comparing yourself to
legendary figures and almost
inevitably, you come up short.
But Charles was tolerant
of my inquiries – a friendly,
intelligent chap – and stayed
at Loftus Road for a year
before Oxford came calling.
Having earned 19 Wales
caps and notched his lone
full international goal with
a winning strike against
Bulgaria, injury forced him into
retirement in 1987.
James arrived from Swansea
via Stoke City for £100,000 in
1984. Like Charles, he figured
He was part of the
memorable night of 5th
March 1986 when
Rangers completed a
two-leg semi-final victory
over Kenny Dalglish’s
Liverpool at Anfield
in John Toshack’s ‘fourth to
first in five’ team which found
itself finishing sixth in its
debut season at the top level.
But Swansea’s descent
through the trapdoor the
following season meant
James was soon pottering
off to the Potteries before
manager Alan Mullery brought
him to QPR in October 1984.
He was an integral part of
the Rangers side as they
maintained top-flight status
for the three campaigns he
served with them (one they
held onto until 1996).
James played alongside
the likes of Gary Bannister,
Terry Fenwick, Warren Neill,
Michael Robinson, Martin
Allen and Alan McDonald. He
was part of the memorable
night of 5th March 1986 when
Rangers completed a two-leg
semi-final victory over Kenny
Dalglish’s Liverpool at Anfield
to secure their decider date
with Oxford the following
month. Impressive when you
consider their hosts had been
European Cup finalists the
previous campaign and were
destined to secure the league
and FA Cup double by the end
of the season.
DAVE
MACKAY
Football’s
Braveheart
The
Authorised
Biography
Forewords by Derek Mackay and Denis Law
James went on to complete
782 league games, moving
from Loftus Road to Leicester
City, back to Swansea and
on to Bradford and Cardiff. It
put him fourth in the all-time
appearance list behind Peter
Shilton, Tommy Hutchison
and Terry Paine. He was
also the youngest player to
make 100 and 200 league
appearances. He brought
down the curtain on his
league career after 20 years
in 1993 by helping Cardiff seal
the third-tier title.
James, who gained 46 Wales
caps, slipped into non-league
with Merthyr Tydfil and Barry
Town. He became playermanager
of Llanelli, just 10.5
miles from Swansea, and
tragically collapsed and died
on 18th February 1998 while
turning out for the town’s
team against Porthcawl.
James, who has a sculptured
bust displayed at the Liberty,
was only 40.
In a tribute in When Saturday
Comes, Huw Richards wrote:
“It was typical of Robbie, who
died playing in the Welsh
League for Llanelli, that he
should still have been playing
meaningful football at the
age of 40. He had been doing
so for a quarter of a century,
since breaking into Swansea’s
reserve side at the age of
15. The statistics of his
career speak of endurance,
consistency and quality.
“If Robbie was fun to watch,
he also looked as though
he was having fun – and no
player is more eagerly relished
than the one whose skills are
supplemented by a sense of
genuine enjoyment.”
Robert Mark James certainly
entertained the Rangers
faithful when he stopped off
at Loftus Road in the middle
of a remarkable journey. Along
with Charles and Leighton
James, he proved the
Swansea Jacks could make
their mark in the heart of
west London and, of course,
outside of it.
Mike Donovan is an author
and award-winning journalist.
He produced Queens Park
Rangers Greatest Games
in 2013, with Stan Bowles
helping to promote it and
Les Ferdinand writing the
foreword. He has a feel for
the Bush and was taken to
Cooke’s Pie and Mash shop in
the area’s market by his mum
(who worked in the area) and
dad, attended concerts at the
QPR FC WOMEN 1
Demi Edwards’ clinical strike right on half-time
was enough to ensure a winning start to the
calendar year for the R’s at Wadham Lodge.
The FA Women’s National League clash began
in very cagey fashion, with both sides keen to
maintain possession but unable to carve out
any significant chances.
Edwards managed to test home goalkeeper
Naomi Ogunde before Seaward were awarded
a golden opportunity to take the lead from the
penalty spot on the half-hour mark.
However, Hoops keeper Katie McClean –
making her first appearance after a spell on the
sidelines – reacted well to push Abbey Dell’s
spot-kick around the post.
Lifted by McClean’s save, Rangers pushed
forward and skipper Vicky Grieve was unlucky
not to break the deadlock with an audacious
40-yard effort that clipped the crossbar.
But Steve Quashie’s side eventually pulled
ahead after a fine solo run from wing-back
Kasha Petit, who cut the ball back to Edwards
and she was allowed time to turn and fire into
the bottom corner.
Seaward pressed for an equaliser after the
break, but found the Hoops defence in defiant
mood and the visitors might have increased
their advantage.
Ellie Searle’s cross was met by Brogan Moore,
who was unfortunate to guide her effort over
the bar, while Sue Kumaning’s attempt brushed
the left-hand post – but ultimately Edwards’
goal proved to be enough.
NCS PROGRAMME WINS AWARD
Congratulations to the QPR in the Community
Trust NCS (National Citizen Service) team,
whose autumn 2021 activities earned them a
Programme of the Week award.
The NCS programme engaged with almost
50 young people from Hillingdon, Brent and
Westminster, providing them with a variety
of outdoor activities such as climbing the 02,
Laser tag, London Bushcraft and Go-Ape.
Workshops included emergency life-saving
skills, money management, CV & employability
as well as guest speakers such as Ray Paul (the
founder of BBC Radio 1Xtra), who provided the
young people with a taste of potential careers
after leaving school.
The programme also involved the theme of
climate change, supported by Hammersmith &
Fulham Council and attended by the borough
mayor, with a day of workshops at the Lyric
Theatre in Hammersmith.
Participants were given the opportunity
to devise their own social action projects,
which included renovating a community
centre, sorting and delivering donations for
Afghan refugees in Kensington & Chelsea and
organising a charity football match at a school
in Wembley.
Stephen McCarthy from QPR’s NCS team
explained: “We are so glad that the participants
had such a good time and we really enjoyed
working with them.
“Hopefully now we can build off this momentum
and deliver a great programme in summer 2022.”
QPR will be running courses in Westminster, Brent
and Hillingdon from 27th June to 26th August.
Columnist
THE FOUNDING EDITOR OF QPR FANSITE ‘R’ GENERATION
DISCUSSES THE LATEST GOINGS ON IN W12…
I
don’t know about you, but I quite
enjoyed that West Brom game. It felt
significant. I brought a friend along, a
Man United fan, to watch with me and he said
afterwards, with the tone of a man who’d just
witnessed a miracle, “Mate. QPR are actually
good.” I think that insight sums up exactly how I
felt about the team after the game.
You get tested in lots of different ways in the
Championship and some tests matter more
than others. I’d actually say we don’t have to
be winning games like West Brom. Realistically
we could go through the whole season not
beating a single team in the top six and still finish
comfortably in a play-off spot. It’s the games we
can win that we should be winning. But when it
comes to the big boys at the top, we truly send a
message when there’s a positive result.
From the off, there was a pace to the game. Both
teams had tactics and strategy and ideas on how
not to lose to the other. There were very few
clear-cut chances, our defence was doing what
it does and theirs was doing the same. You could
tell from that first half, as my Man United friend
confidently predicted, this game was going to be
won through one single moment.
Step up Charlie, Charlie, Charlie, Charlie, Charlie,
Charlie, Charlie Austin. I’ll be honest. I spoke to
Charlie at the end of last season. Charlie was
my hero growing up, I was a striker because
of Charlie, I wore the number nine because of
Charlie, I named my dog Charlie because of – you
guessed it – Mr Austin. I notice I have used the
word Charlie about 60 times in this paragraph,
but I just can’t not. Charlie was my guy. So, when
it came to actually interviewing him, I was not
exactly calm. Our conversation flew by and
afterwards I felt awful – I was so flustered by the
situation that I couldn’t get my words out and
conducted a rather below-par interview.
But then he stepped on the pitch and I
remembered that he wasn’t an interview subject,
a feedback system for my own journalistic
insecurities, but a footballer. A footballer who
loves my club, who loves the game and knows
how to play it. The man is a hero. That’s what
he is, that’s what he does. You can’t be a hero if
there’s no day to save and that’s our advantage in
this promotion scrap. We have passion, we have
heroes. At the end of the day, with two teams that
are both good but fighting for different things,
you need an ace up your sleeve to beat your
opponent and we have plenty.
