It is with great joy that I send my greetings and best
wishes on the occasion of the 75th birthday of the Most Ven.
Dr Pannila Dhammakeerthi Sri Ananda Nayake Thero, the
chief incumbent of the Aththanegalle Raja Maha Viharaya
and prelate of the Malwatte Chapter. Indeed, I consider it
a privilege to have been able to know Ven Ananda Thero
personally and work with him closely on several occasions.
His friendly ways typify the treasured spiritual style of an
indigenous Buddha Shrawaka.
The Ven Nayake Thero, as I know, has a great heart that
opens to all most generously which we see from his many
efforts and his dedicated will to serve all irrespective of
racial and religious differences. The great brotherhood that
Buddhism promotes, which does not limit to the human
beings alone, but extends beyond to all sentient beings
that live and strive ceaselessly, is reflected consistently in
his pedagogical vision of formation and education. Born
in a Buddhist island which is an icon of cultural wealth
and world heritage, we are endowed with a civilization
that espouses compassion and love. Thanks to the many
sacrifices of patriotic Monks who lived in the past, we have
inherited that rich tradition which we must protect and
bequeath to our posterity. I have personally experienced
that uniquely affable and heartfelt quality in Ven. Ananda
Thero who came to pay a brotherly visit to me when we
were grieving over the mindless mayhem on the Easter
Sunday of 2019 and offered us help.
We see in Rev. Ananda Nayake Thero those sterling
qualities of a dedicated monk who devotes his time and
talent to uplift the lives of others and of children, trying to
raise the standards of education in schools and promote
interfaith harmony and national reconciliation among
students of all ethnic communities in this country.
Today, more than ever before, our country needs candid
and courageous men like our Ven. Thero who will stand in
solidarity with the suffering masses. We are living at a time
when the public morale is very low and there is a collapse
and complete breakdown of credibility in civil leadership
and the State apparatus in general. The only institute in
which there is still little hope is religion. Therefore, I wish
that our Ven. Nayake Thero may receive every blessing from
above and be given good health, peace of mind and long
life to serve many more years in our Motherland.
