It is with great pleasure I extend this felicitation
message on the occasion of launching a volume in
appreciation of the great service rendered by Ven. Dr.
Pannila Sri Ananda Nayaka Thero, the chief Sanghanaka
of the Sinadi Siv Korale and the chief incumbent of the
historical Arahanta Rajama Vihayara at Attanagalle. Ven.
Dr. Pannila Sri Ananda Nayaka Thero, who is celebrating his
75th birthday is a monk with exemplary character leading
the noble conduct of monkhood with precise understanding
of fruition of recluseship based on the Buddha's admonish
that "Parattham patipajjatha" (serve for the benefit of
others).
As a nationally and internationally famed monk,
yeomen service has been rendered by Ven. Dr. Pannila Sri
Ananda Nayaka Thero diffuse over many different areas
as monastic, social, national and academic etc. Ven. Dr.
Pannila Sri Ananda Nayaka Thero holds competency in
foreign languages such as English, Japan etc. started his
international Buddhist missionary works based on USA
in early 1983 and was able to expand its vistas to Taiwan
also later on. He didn't confined his service to that point.
After understanding the value of continuance of that
missionary process for the benefits of world he initiated
valuable project to produce monks nurtured with proper
recluses' attitudes and capability in international Buddhist
missionary services.
He annually donates school equipment for students in
low income families. Not only that, with the great intention
of strengthening national education and producing a
future generation fostered by moral values and qualities
he has donated and added more than 33 huge buildings for
national education system by now.
As Buddhist monk dedicated for social well being
when people are at great stake irrespective of ethnic or
religious differences of victims Ven. Dr. Pannila Sri Ananda
Nayaka thero always generously appear to help them
providing necessary aids such as building houses and
donating dry food rations, donating medical equipment
and medicines to hospital etc.
I congratulate Ven. Dr. Pannila Sri Ananda Nayaka thero
on his 75th birth day and wish that with the blessings of
the triple gem he may have vigor and strength to continue
his great service for the long lasting of Buddhism and wellbeing
of society.

The Chief incumbent of the historical Attanagalla
Raaja Maha Viharaya, Ven. Dr. Pannila Ananda abhidhana
Nayaka Thero is a popularly known revered Buddhist leader
in Sri Lanka and the international Buddhist world. Apart
from the office of chief incumbent of the Attanagalla Raaja
Maha Viharaya he has been appointed the Chief Sangha
Nayaka of the Seenadhi four Korales of Sri Lanka for the
Siyamopali Maha Nikaya by the Malwatte Maha Viharaya.
He is well educated and fulfilled with all disciplines
and qualities needed for a Theravada Buddhist Priest.
He has done so much of social service and is a major
donor to the infrastructure of public schools in need. His
contributions have helped thousands of children who are
in need of assistance for the supply of equipment and
books for their schooling.
Venerable Ananda Nayaka Thero has come a long
way in his services for the advancement of quality life to
all Buddhists. He is a definite asset to the Maha Sangha
and the Buddhist people in other countries of the world.
Eleven years since his birth in 1947 he was ordained in
robes as a samanera. Later he gained his higher ordination
under the guidance of his scholarly teachers became the
revered leader as a in the Bhikhu sector and achieved the
highest levels in Sri Lanka. His scholarly knowledge and his
dedication to the service of Buddhism and social service,
he is today revered, respected and popularly known among
the Buddhist people of the world. We are honored to be
associated with him and remain supportive of his good
deeds at all times in the future.
It is very much a worthy cause that celebrations are
been organized to celebrate his 75th birthday this year,
whichl gives all his devotees a chance of showing their
appreciation for the invaluable religious and social services

Being the Chief Sanga Nayake of Attanagallc Maha
Vihara and Sinadi Regions of Malwathu Sector Most
Venerable Ananda Maha Nayake Thero of Pannila is an
exemplary monk who follows the Doctrine of Lord Buddha's
Daana Perfection.
His great personality enriched with his unblemished
character really leads to a Bodhisatta who follows the
Perfections.
The yeoman service he renders to the needy and
poor stricken people of this country is remarkable and
commendable. The distribution of equipments require for
the hospitals, modernization of school buildings in keeping
with their requirements, construction of buildings needed
for the schools including libraries, granting of scholarships
are some of the remarkable contributions and services he
extended.
In addition, he played the major role in construction
336 complete houses for the helpless victims of the
Psunami in 2004. He follows the principle of welfare for
all human beings in keeping the doctrine of Lord Buddha.
We wish our Most Ven Maha Nayake Thero all success
for the future plans and a life span free of illness requires
to continue the enormous service with vigour and strength

The components were added to enhance the honor of the
Attanagalla temple as well as about 38 school buildings were
developed for the students who live in this area, thus the service
he has done for them will be memorable. No words to express the
greatness of the dedication that he has showed by offering monthly
scholarships for the poor students.
Many of donations were given to heal the suffering people
such as to build a ward for Buddhist monks and a children’s ward.

It is with great joy that I send my greetings and best
wishes on the occasion of the 75th birthday of the Most Ven.
Dr Pannila Dhammakeerthi Sri Ananda Nayake Thero, the
chief incumbent of the Aththanegalle Raja Maha Viharaya
and prelate of the Malwatte Chapter. Indeed, I consider it
a privilege to have been able to know Ven Ananda Thero
personally and work with him closely on several occasions.
His friendly ways typify the treasured spiritual style of an
indigenous Buddha Shrawaka.
The Ven Nayake Thero, as I know, has a great heart that
opens to all most generously which we see from his many
efforts and his dedicated will to serve all irrespective of
racial and religious differences. The great brotherhood that
Buddhism promotes, which does not limit to the human
beings alone, but extends beyond to all sentient beings
that live and strive ceaselessly, is reflected consistently in
his pedagogical vision of formation and education. Born
in a Buddhist island which is an icon of cultural wealth
and world heritage, we are endowed with a civilization
that espouses compassion and love. Thanks to the many
sacrifices of patriotic Monks who lived in the past, we have
inherited that rich tradition which we must protect and
bequeath to our posterity. I have personally experienced
that uniquely affable and heartfelt quality in Ven. Ananda
Thero who came to pay a brotherly visit to me when we
were grieving over the mindless mayhem on the Easter
Sunday of 2019 and offered us help.
We see in Rev. Ananda Nayake Thero those sterling
qualities of a dedicated monk who devotes his time and
talent to uplift the lives of others and of children, trying to
raise the standards of education in schools and promote
interfaith harmony and national reconciliation among
students of all ethnic communities in this country.
Today, more than ever before, our country needs candid
and courageous men like our Ven. Thero who will stand in
solidarity with the suffering masses. We are living at a time
when the public morale is very low and there is a collapse
and complete breakdown of credibility in civil leadership
and the State apparatus in general. The only institute in
which there is still little hope is religion. Therefore, I wish
that our Ven. Nayake Thero may receive every blessing from
above and be given good health, peace of mind and long
life to serve many more years in our Motherland.

I am also pleased to be able to comment on the
magazine that is being published on the occasion of the
75th birth anniversary of the chief incumbent of Attanagalla
Rajamaha Vihara, Mahopadhyaya, Dr. Pannila Sri Ananda
Nayaka Thero. It is important for all of us to appreciate
that the Venerable Nayaka Thera was a great man who was
not religiously or nationally narrow-minded. He looks at
people of all races, Sinhalese, Tamils ​and Muslims alike by
the same eye.
His efforts for the development of Sri Lankan
education were immense. Following in the footsteps of
the Buddhist philosophy he inherited, he has made a great
contribution to its development as well as to the education
of children of other races, including Tamils ​and Muslims.
The service he has rendered not only academically but
also socially and healthily is unparalleled. Most honorable,
Pannila Sri Ananda Thero also performed various social
services such as building hospitals and libraries. He also
assisted the displaced people during all disasters such as
droughts, floods and landslides.
It is worth mentioning here that the Tamil people in
the villages of Ampara and Tampitiya who were displaced
by the war in the North and East in the year 2000 were
provided with essential food items such as dry food. In
addition, a drinking water project was launched for the
children of Kalaivani Primary School, Kegalle, who were
suffering without a drop of drinking water, to meet their
drinking needs. Scholarships are also given every month
to build the education of Tamil children in the surrounding
area. I have heard of that he has completed 33 school
buildings for children and will soon be handing over five
more school buildings to students. I believe other tasks will
be taken place as health and education.
Therefore, I wish him the protection and blessings of
the Skandeshwara Mahaswamy of Kataragama with all the
deities.

The social services of national importance rendered
by the most venerable Pannila Sri Ananda Thera are
indeed praiseworthy, including the proposed bequest of
the fully-furnished three-storied building in Polonnaruwa
Abhayapura Vidyapaya, two-storied building in Kotugoda
Primary School, three-storied building in Meerigama
Bandaranayake Maha Vidyalaya, three-storied building
in Algama Maha Vidyalaya, three-storied building in
Buthpitiya Maha Vidyalaya, three-storied building in
Pasyala Maha Vidyalaya to the students of the respective
schools in commemoration of his 75th birth anniversary
falling in January 2022, and also his previous donations such
as the three-storied building to Thihariya Al-Azhar Central
College in 2017 and buildings to various hospitals around
the island. This is a testament to the service the venerable
Thera has rendered towards the field of education and
social integrity, which elaborates his excellence as a monk.
The purpose of the mission of Venerable Sri Ananda
Thera by giving leadership, according to Buddhism, to build
a righteous Sri Lankan society and for the well-being of all
Sri Lankans, without any ethnic or religious differences is to
build a prosperous motherland full of peace, brotherhood
and affability, that is enriched by ethnic and religious unity
achieved through improved education.
Our humble opinion is that the highest respect Sri
Lankans as a whole could afford for the Venerable Thero is
to get together and work tirelessly towards achieving his
supreme purpose, for which he has dedicated his entire life

The Chief Incumbent of the historic Attanagalla Rajamaha
Viharaya Ven. Dr. Pannila Sri Ananda Nayaka Thera, is indeed a pious
monk adhering devotedly to the practicality of Buddhism.
The service rendered by Ven. Pannila Sri Ananda Nayaka Thera
for the expansion of the Sri Sambuddha Sasana is immense. The role
played by Most Ven. Pannila Ananda Thera towards the progress of
the social, educational, cultural and health spheres is a reflection of
the Buddhist philosophy that Nayaka Thera learned and uniquely
practiced.
Educational infrastructure is an important factor in maintaining
a positive teaching and learning process. Realizing this, the Most
Venerable Thera's contribution to the development of schools in the
Gampaha District as well as in other areas is highly commendable.
The service rendered by Ven. Pannila Ananda Nayaka Thera is
so great, inordinate and generous.
The commitment shown by Ven. Pannila Ananda Nayaka Thera
to overcome every disaster that occurred in the country affecting the
people depicts his Bodhisattva quality. Irrespective of communal and
religious differences, every one respects the Nayaka Thera for the

Thero who entered the ordination called “Pannila Ananda”
and came to higher ordination in the year 1967. There are
many examples in the life of Ven. Thero who have made
invaluable contributions in many fields such as Sasana
perpetuation, patriotic service, general social welfare
and educational advancement of lay clergy students. I
gratefully appreciate the philanthropic services rendered
by Thero in the USA, Taiwan and many other countries
beyond the motherland, as a Buddhist monk. Thereby, Ven.
Thero bring great glory to our country. Ven. Thero was the
pioneer to create Buddhist revival in the region by making
the Attanagalla Rajamaha Viharaya a central temple of
the Bodu Vihara lineage and was the Chief Incumbent
of many temples and a Maha Thero, who endowed many
monks with great insight to the Sasana, as a patriarch of
the Sangha. I gratefully acknowledge the contribution of
Thero to the recovery of the lives of the people who were
devastated by the various catastrophic situations faced by
the nation, including the Tsunami disaster, as well as the
services rendered for the betterment of war heroes' welfare
and health services. It is my belief that Thero is playing
a national role in the development of Buddhist temples,
providing facilities for educational institutions including
schools, awarding educational scholarships, developing
libraries as well as programmes aimed at social upliftment
for the prevention and correction of narcotics. I congratulate
Ven. Pannila Sri Anandabhidhana Thero on Thero’s 75th

It gives me great pleasure to wish my dear friend, Ven.
Dr. Pannila Ananda Nayaka Maha Thera, a very happy 75th
birthday. Ven. Ananda and I have tracked a great deal of
mileage together on this current earthly journey. He has
been one of my closest associates and confidantes since
he was ordained in 1958. Ven. Ananda and I were even
roommates together at the University of Kelaniya.
Ven. Ananda has many talents, and is a born leader. He
is an accomplished linguist, having first mastered Pali with
Honors at the university; then Japanese at Kyoto University
in Japan; Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan; and also Spanish
while here with me in Los Angeles.
I invited him to join me here in America in 1978, and
we became the co-founders of the Los Angeles Buddhist
Vihara at that time second Sri Lankan Buddhist Vihara in
America. We both faced numerous difficulties – including
being ridiculed, stoned, and mocked by strangers on the
streets for wearing our orange robes. At the time, most
people had never met or even seen a Buddhist monk in the
US. In those early days we were young, progressive in our
thinking, and interested in reaching out to American people
so we could spread the Buddha’s teachings here. Eventually
we founded Dharma Vijaya Buddhist Vihara on Crenshaw
Boulevard in 1980.
Ven. Ananda and I co-founded the Houston Buddhist
Vihara in 1988, and he became its
first Abbot. He was influential in bringing Ven. Alavala
Subuthi and Ven. Watogala Saranasiri to America who
subsequently founded their own temples in Las Vegas,
Nevada and Riverside, California. Ven. Kaburagalle Nanda
was also brought to America by Ven. Ananda and founded
Dallas Buddhist Vihara. He was responsible for bringing
Ven. Ven. Dr. Basnagoda Rahula to America, and sent him to
the university; he became a Professor of English Literature.
He is currently the Abbot of the Houston Buddhist Vihara.
There are now over 100 Sri Lankan temples in the country
and Ven. Ananda assisted many of our new American
temples.
Ven. Ananda built 35 school buildings for the
Gampaha District. He also built a special wing for monks
in the Wathupitiwala Hospital furnished with a high-tech
MRI machine. He also started the Pathiraja Pirivena in
Attanagala, where ther are twelve temples. He was awarded
the title of Mahaopajjraya by the Malwatta Chapter. He
serves as the Preceptor for all monks in Sri Lanka receiving
higher ordination from this Chapter.
My friend for over sixty years is a highly-accomplished
Sangha member, of whom I am very proud. I wish him long
life and the Blessings of the Triple Gem to continue his
service to the sasana.
