THE
GAFFER
Awarm welcome to
you as we host the
Severnside derby, a
match always highly
anticipated. Today we
extend that welcome
to Steve Morison, his coaching staff, players and
supporters.
It was a nice feeling to oversee a win in my first
Severnside derby in August. Andi Weimann scored
a brace in South Wales
that day, with his winner
a volley from Antoine
Semenyo’s cross.
Antoine impressed me
last weekend against
Fulham but I had no
complaints about the
final score. We didn’t
defend set-plays well, we
didn’t physically compete
and we were punished for
simple mistakes.
We did create more in the
box but we need to be
more consistent across
the park as a foundation
to build from.
Looking forward, we all know how much Saturday’s
game against Cardiff means for the fans, in
particular what it means for bragging rights off the
pitch.
But of course it’s another difficult ask at this level.
We are playing against a team in and around where
we are in the table, so we have to make sure we
ONLY WE CAN
TURN OUR FORM
AROUND, I’M
LOOKING FOR
IMPROVEMENT
AND I NEED TO
SEE A POSITIVE
PERFORMANCE.
are at our best. Only we can turn our form around,
I’m looking for improvement and I need to see a
positive performance. That hasn’t always meant a
positive result but it’s all we can do to give ourselves
the best chance of securing three points. We need
to inspire the fans more and then feed off that
energy.
I know you are eager to see movement in the
transfer window. We know the financial situation
and we have to manage transfers activity
accordingly. I’m not
saying we are ruling
out anything before
the window closes at
the end of the month,
but we will only allow
players to leave if it
allows us to bring
someone else in.
Rest assured, I am in
regular meetings with
our CEO Richard Gould,
so we are clear about
what is doable, that our
decisions are not hit
and miss – we’ll try to
make the right decision
for the club.
But for now, the focus is on the Severnside derby,
creating a magnificent atmosphere at Ashton Gate
with a bumper crowd in the stands and providing
the platform to get three points.
Enjoy the game!
Cheers,
CARDIFF CITY
DID YOU
KNOW?
Before its closure in 2009, Ninian Park was the
club’s home for 99 years, even housing the Welsh
national team. A record 62,634 fans watched a
fixture against England there in October 1959. The
site has since been converted into a housing estate.
8
KEY PLAYER
JOE RALLS
It has been 11 years since Joe
Ralls made his Cardiff City debut,
clocking up 292 appearances in
all appearances since then. The
midfielder even scored on his
Championship debut, a 2-1 defeat to
Hull City in October 2011.
Except for a year on loan at Yeovil
Town in 2013/14, where the Aldershot
youth product played under former
Robins manager Gary Johnson, he’s
been part of the Bluebirds’ plans ever
since and has been a prominent figure
once again this season.
The 28-year-old has featured 16 times
during 2021/22 to date, grabbing five
assists and a Man of the Match display
against West Bromwich Albion.
Each of his five assists have come
since November, with two arriving in
a single game as 10-men Cardiff lost
3-2 to Sheffield United. He also set up
Mark McGuinness’ last-gasp equaliser
in the 2-2 draw with Birmingham City in
December.
DESPITE A PROMISING START, THE
BLUEBIRDS HAVE PICKED UP JUST SIX
WINS FROM THEIR 25 LEAGUE MATCHES
TO THIS POINT.
After losing just once in their
opening six league games – a
2-1 Severnside derby defeat to
today's opponents – the South
Wales club saw their fortunes
nosedive from mid-September
when they suffered a club record
eight losses in a row, part of a
10-game winless streak during
which they suffered crushing
defeats against Blackburn
Rovers (1-5) and West Bromwich
Albion (0-4).
That poor run of form led to
Mick McCarthy’s departure as
manager after just 10 months
in the position, with coach
Steve Morison announced as
his replacement until the end
of the season after a temporary
spell in charge in which he
stopped the rut with a 2-1 win
against Huddersfield Town.
The 38-year-old former Millwall
striker has been unable to
build on his positive start, and
his side head to Ashton Gate
without a win in their last five
Championship games.
They do, however, have an
Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round
tie against Liverpool at Anfield
Andy King is challenged by on-loan Bluebirds midfielder Ryan Giles – since
recalled by Wolves – during the Robins' 2-1 win at Cardiff City Stadium in
August. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it was the first Severnside derby to
be played in front of both sets of clubs' fans since November 2019.
in early February to look forward
to after beating Preston North
End in the Third Round thanks
to Mark Harris’ extra-time
strike. It will be their first trip to
Anfield since October 2018 – a
game which was part of their
most recent Premier League
campaign but ended in a 4-1 win
for the Reds.
With the past two matches
between the two sides in BS3
having been played behind
closed doors, this afternoon
could see former Robins Marlon
Pack and Aden Flint play in front
of the Ashton Gate fans in Cardiff
colours for the first time. Flint
was sent off against West Brom
on January 2nd as tensions
flared at the end of the game –
but saw his resultant three-game
ban later rescinded.
Cardiff have also bolstered their
squad with the arrival of Leeds
United midfielder Cody Drameh
on loan until the end of the
season.
INTRODUCING
HER GAME TOO
City is proud to
partner with
Her Game Too
and support a
positive change for women in
football. The relationship will
be launched today at Ashton
Gate, and City Women’s match
versus Charlton Women at
the Robins High Performance
Centre tomorrow.
The Her Game Too campaign
started in May 2021, founded by
Caz May and a group of female
supporters passionate about
football and working to eradicate
sexism in the football industry.
They want women and girls of
all ages to feel confident and
safe sharing their opinion about
football online and in real life
without fear of sexist abuse.
Her Game Too co-founders Leah
Case and Eve Ralph said: “To
collaborate with a club we both
support in Bristol City is huge
for us. We’re really excited as we
have both been coming to Ashton
Gate for more than 18 years.
“I don’t think it will feel real until
I see it at Ashton Gate and the
Robins High Performance Centre
this weekend. I’ll definitely sit
back then and realise we’ve
done something big when I see
the campaign being promoted
and advertised at a club I have
supported my whole life.”
ABOUT
HER GAME TOO
The campaign started with
a video of sexist messages
received by the founding
members and when that went
viral, it began to take off.
“We have since partnered with
many football clubs which
has helped promote the cause
and create a positive change,”
they said. “We want to have a
platform where people can report
the issues they face as well
as educate people on what it’s
currently like for females in this
industry.”
Bristol City Women Chairperson
and Bristol City Men’s Board
Director Gavin Marshall said: “We
as a club are delighted and proud
to partner with Her Game Too. We
fully support and understand that
this campaign can empower and
create positive change for women
in football. We encourage all fans
to come and watch the team they
support and in no circumstances
should they feel unsafe whilst
doing so. We believe that football
is for everyone and we want to
play our part in the movement
towards that goal.”
The Robins Foundation has
invited young players from their
weekly Wildcats sessions to enjoy
the fixture at the Robins High
Performance Centre on Sunday.
TOMAS KALAS IS RELISHING THE
Tomas Kalas knows a thing or
two about the importance of
Saturday’s rivalry.
There’s just four places and
seven points separating the two
sides when they meet at Ashton
Gate and both teams will be
looking for some momentum
to move away from the lower
regions of the Championship
table.
There’s plenty to play for and
an exciting encounter is surely
guaranteed for the lunchtime
kick-off.
“You often notice a brilliant
atmosphere in this game,
whether we’re playing at home or
away, and it shows people really
care about it,” Kalas told
THE ROB NS, as he eagerly
awaits the upcoming derby.
“So do we as players and our
preparation remains the same
for this one as much as any. It’s
exciting and we want to deliver
for the fans, and give them a win
to celebrate.”
Kalas was a key figure in the
South Wales win back in August,
where Andreas Weimann netted a
brace – his winner a scintillating,
unstoppable backpost volley!
Kalas reflected: “Of course I
remember our goals well. We
went there with a strong mindset
and physicality, which was
important because Cardiff are a
physical side themselves. 4
so that was really nice and
it meant a lot.
“When we played them
at home last season it
didn’t go so well but with
the win away back in
August hopefully we can
take all six points from
this season’s Severnside
The Robins head into it
after back-to-back defeats
to Kalas’ former loan club
Fulham. The first of those
was in the Emirates FA
Cup, though extra-time
was needed for the London
The defender praised City’s
“energetic” display that day
and he’s been encouraged
by recent performances,
during an inconsistent
campaign overall.
Kalas said: “It’s been up
and down, we’ve had a lot
of games which we haven’t
seen off when we probably
should have. We’ve also
got something out of
games when we shouldn’t
have as well, so there’s
been a mixture of different
fortunes. We’ve been good
at times but not so good
as well.
“We know we need to
prove to ourselves we are
capable of competing
at this level. We need
to repeat the good
performances and get rid
of the bad ones. We owe
the fans a lot in terms of
putting results together,
but we need to look at
ourselves and prove we are
good enough.
“I believe we can do that
but we need to start
sooner rather than later to
pick up some consistency.
We are never satisfied
with one or two good
more to be where we want
“Introducing the young lads
the club to have the young
Following the 4-0 win at Bolton
Wanderers, City would complete their
1985/86 league season with one win,
one draw and one loss to finish in a
disappointing ninth position. Fortunately the dream of
a first-ever final at the Twin Towers was still alive…
The Southern Area final of the Freight Rover Trophy
against Fourth Division Hereford United was a twolegged
affair. The sizeable number of City fans who
travelled to Edgar Street saw their team dominate the
first leg only to emerge on the end of 2-0 defeat. After
Bobby Hutchinson lost possession, Paul Maddy found
Stewart Phillips, who evaded Brian Williams’ rash
challenge to shoot past Keith Waugh on 33 minutes.
Then, a minute before the break, Ollie Kearns guided
the ball in at the near post from Mick Carter’s corner.
Evening Post correspondent Richard Latham was
upbeat, however, and believed – along with others and
I was one of them – that City had the attacking flair to
overcome the deficit on home soil. In the second leg
Cooper’s men bombarded the Hereford defence without
success until the hour mark, when a two-minute blitz
shocked home and away fans alike. Bulls keeper Kevin
Rose allowed a tame Glyn Riley header to somehow slip
through his grip – and City to taste blood. Two minutes
later Howard Pritchard’s fiercely driven ball across the
area was deflected into his own net by Mel Pejic to
level the aggregate score.
No more goals in the 90 minutes meant the tie entered
extra time. Players were sinking on their knees as the
match headed for a penalty shoot-out. Then, in the last
minute, Hutchinson headed down an Alan Walsh cross
and Steve Neville coolly set himself before firing home
the winner amid jubilant scenes reminiscent of ten
years previously when City won promotion to the First
Division. At last, for the first time in their history, City
were going to Wembley!
CITY IN CARTOONS
with club historian David Woods
City were the FA Cup giant-killers of the 1934/35
season. Starting with a 2-0 home win over
Gillingham, a trip to Millmoor followed where
Rotherham United were defeated 2-1, prior to three
tussles with Bury culminating in a 2-1 victory at Villa Park.
This saw Bob Hewison's side travel to Fratton Park in the Fourth
Round on January 26th where they held First Division Portsmouth
to a goalless draw, before memorably winning the replay 2-0 at a
packed Ashton Gate.
City’s cup heroes were captured in the above cartoon which appeared
in the ‘Bristol Evening World’ on the day of their Fifth Round meeting
with Preston North End at Ashton Gate. They would draw this game
0-0, only to see their cup run finally end in a 5-0 replay defeat.
ON THAT
STEVE SMITH LOOKS BACK
AT AN INTERVIEW WITH
'CANNY SCOT' DONNIE GILLIES
As we
shiver in the
stands, here
is former
Bristol City
utility man
Donnie
Gillies
explaining in the 1977 Shoot!
Summer Special why defending
is better than scoring...
“The main difference is the
pressure. Playing up front you are
expected to score goals. If you
miss you are a dead loss. Score…
and you’re a hero.”
Donnie should know, for not only
did he score the first top-flight
goal at Ashton Gate in 65 years
against Stoke City in August 1976,
he also grabbed the equaliser in
the dramatic 2-2 draw at Coventry
City that ensured First Division
survival at the end of that season.
“If a striker misses a chance, his
ears will be burning for days...
you just don’t have to score at the
back. Which all adds up to the
fact that I am happy in defence. I
suspect, too, that manager Alan
Dicks is equally happy. At least he
keeps playing me there, although
he did move me back up front for
a short spell [in 1976/77].”
It was at the start of the 1975/76
promotion campaign that Gillies
switched to the back when fellow
Scot Gerry Sweeney was injured
against Oxford United. Substitute
John Emanuel took over in attack:
“Unlucky for Gerry Sweeney? Not
really, for when his injury cleared
up Gerry came back into the side
as a midfield player and has done
a marvellous job.”
By the summer of 1977, Don had
clocked up 155 appearances for
the Robins, with 23 goals to his
name since his debut in March
1973 at Nottingham Forest.
“Nowadays I’m facing the ball
most of the time. If I am beaten
on the turn, the pace I required
up front is more than useful in
getting another tackle in on your
opponent.”
He has high praise for his fellow
defenders too: “My task is
made easier because I have the
assistance of Gary Collier and
Geoff Merrick. Thank goodness
Geoff and Tom Ritchie didn’t
accept the chance of joining
Arsenal last year.”
The canny Scot had already
gained nationwide notoriety by
netting the winner against Leeds
United in the FA Cup fifth round
replay on a muddy Elland Road
pitch in February 1974 as a
striker. And it was his time in the
Highland League that put him in
good stead: “Heavy grounds don’t
bother me. Fort William has the
highest rainfall in Britain – around
87 inches a year. Ask the Met
Office if you don’t believe me.”
With a Division One season under
his belt, Donnie was reserved
about City's future in the higher
echelons: “I’m not going to say
we’ll win the First Division title
within a few years. One thing I do
know, however, it won’t be for the
want of trying.”
