Kalajoki and its surroundings are full of
unique sites with long stories to tell. The
old town Plassi radiates history with its
country market and idyllic wooden houses
built on the banks of the Kalajoki river.
The lively city centre of Kalajoki has
been renewing at a fast pace in recent
years, and there is something new to see
every year. The Kalajoki city centre is just
8 kilometres away from the Hiekkasärkät
holiday area, so shopping, lunch, and
culture are all a short bicycle or car ride
away. Remember to also visit the lovely
and slowpaced rural villages of Kalajoki.

farm animals in Etelänkylä, and visit the

MAAKALLA ISLAND
On a clear day, the pearl of Kalajoki, Maakalla,
can be seen from the mainland. The
island sits in the Bothnian Bay, roughly 18
kilometres from the mainland, and can be
reached by boat during the summer. Enjoy
the swelling sea, the unique landscape with
fishermen’s huts and, the bare but beautiful
nature. Step back in time and experience
the rustic 18th century wooden
Maakalla church! You can reach Maakalla
for a day trip aboard the sails of the reconstructed
replica of a traditional sailing

RAHJA ARCHIPELAGO
The mesmerising Rahja archipelago entices
travellers to spend their day island hopping.
The area comprises some 100 islands and
is located less than 10 kilometres from the
Hiekkasärkät holiday area, which makes it
the perfect destination for a day trip. The
archipelago is unique in Europe since it includes
all types of habitat of the land uplift
coast, from the sheltered forests of the inner
archipelago to the open sea islands of the outer
archipelago. The serene island landscape
is perfect for paddling, SUP-boarding, and
fishing, or for cross-country skiing in winter.

THE HIEKKASÄRKÄT DUCKBOARD
TRAILS, VIHASLAHTI AND
MARISTONPAKAT
A duckboard trail, more than 2 km in
length, runs along the shores of the Hiekkasärkät
holiday area and continues as a
gravel path to the Vihas-Keihäslahti nature
reserve. The trail is suitable for walking
and cycling, and it is also wheelchair
and stroller accessible. At the end of the
trail in Vihaslahti, travellers have access
to a birdwatching tower, a fire pit and a
shelter, information board, and a toilet.
Vihaslahti is home to a variety of bird
species that feed and nest in the area.
The beautiful Maristonpakat area is only a
stone’s throw away from Vihaslahti. The
Maristonpakat sand dunes can be explored
with the brand-new duckboard trail.
SIIPONJOKI NATURE TRAIL
The 20-kilometre Siiponjoki nature trail
starts from the northern section of the
Hiekkasärkät area and crosses through
magnificent pine forests, boulder fields,
and wetlands until it reaches the sand
embankments of the Siiponjoki river.
Siiponjoki is a beautiful hiking destination.
Families with younger members can
take a shorter trail starting at the Pleuna
rest stop and following the path running
along the river.

The most diverse outdoor adventure park in
the Nordic countries offers a unique venue
for challenging yourself in exciting ways
– perfectly safely. High ropes courses of
different levels with ziplines are a fun way
to have an adventure when the ground is
not frozen. You can also try out the Bungee
Trampolines and X-Tower, Europe’s tallest
adventure tower with its 330-metre Mega
Zipline down to the beach, climbing wall

You can enjoy family fun time in JukuPark,
open from June until early August! Slip
down the water slide, enjoy the WaterPlay

SuperPark Kalajoki offers the joy of exercising

centre that offers rehabilitation courses
by the Social Insurance Institution of

The rehabilitation courses are funded by
Kela, and they are free of charge for the
customer. The courses help you to find

HAVULA MANOR
Plassi, the old town of Kalajoki, takes visitors
back in time to the old city centre of
Kalajoki with its market square, riverbanks,
and idyllic wooden houses. In Plassi, you can
visit Havula, the Art Nouveau villa of sawmill
owner Oskari Santaholma, and a small fishing
museum. Alternatively, you can simply enjoy
the atmosphere of the main street and the
old wooden houses along the riverbanks. The
best way to learn about the history of Plassi
and to enjoy its sights is to book a guide to
take you on a tour. Havula’s museum tours

13. SUMMER THEATRE FOR
CHILDREN AND ADULTS
In the summer of 2022, the Kalajoki Summer
Theatre, next to the campsite and adventure
park, will offer theatrical experiences
in July and August. Experienced local
theatre enthusiasts, directed by a professional,
are sure to provide you with the perfect
summer theatre experience. The traditional
Children’s Venetian Festival is held on the
last weekend of August and includes plenty
of magic and music. The summer theatre
seats 450 people in its covered seating area.
The stage is also partly covered. During the
intermission, the audience is served coffee
and sweet rolls, as is customary in Finland.

you straight to the middle of the famous
beaches. In the Free Fall jump, you can

activities. The adventure park staff
are also happy to help with the planning

Pakka also has plenty of things to do on
ground level and during winter. Archery
tag, bubble football, archery competitions

WaterPark JukuPark is located at the centre of the tourism area of the Hiekkasärkät sand dunes in Kalajoki. In
connection with the waterpark, you can find the 18-hole Adventure Golf course and the summer restaurant Kompassi.
The Pirates Hideout children’s playground that was opened in 2021 as well as children’s Fantazy Minigolf make
JukuPark a superbly diverse adventure park where the whole family can enjoy a fun day.

JukuPark has about 20 wild water slides for
you to slide down into heated pools. One of
the most popular activities is the WaterPlay
area, suitable for water lovers of all ages.

JOE-Scooter brought electric scooters to Kalajoki
in summer 2021. The reception was very
positive and the people of Kalajoki and visitors

getting around the tourist area on short trips.
For the summer of 2022, JOE-Scooter will
increase the availability of electric scooters in
the Kalajoki area and will also introduce electric-powered
JOE mopeds. The Road Traffic
Act treats electric mopeds as two-wheeled
motorised vehicles with a maximum design
speed of 45 kilometres per hour or less. Unlike
an electric scooter, riding an electric moped
requires at least an AM/120 licence and you
must wear a helmet

MARINAN PORTTI
AN AMAZING VIEW DIRECTLY OVER THE SEA
The sea view has been the major starting point in the design of Marinan Portti. The apartments are designed so
that nearly every one of them has a view over the sea, and you can admire the stunning sunsets of Kalajoki from

MAMMA LEONE
A PERENNIAL FAVOURITE AT THE
CENTRE OF KALAJOKI
Mamma Leone, the most legendary restaurant
in Kalajoki, moved to new premises
in the centre of Kalajoki in the summer
of 2021. The new location is at the old Kalajoki
fire station, within a stone’s throw of
the previous one.
For more than three decades, Mamma
Leone has been the restaurant to go to
for a good meal and an enjoyable evening
in the centre of Kalajoki. Mamma Leone
opened in 1987, and it quickly gained popularity
as the best pizzeria in the area, to
which people flocked from near and far.
“We have a lot of customers who visited
us as kids with their parents, and who are
now bringing their own children to Mamma
Leone. I’m always happy to see the
many holidaymakers and tourists among
our customers who come back year after
year,” says Ilkka Koski, who runs Mamma
Leone.
The customers of Mamma Leone have
long been used to getting the restaurant’s
delicious dishes as takeaway, and the same
service is still available. This means that
the restaurant has a long tradition. Koski
says that the cornerstone of the operation
is their expert personnel.
“We want to offer delicious food that’s
consistently of high quality.” On weekdays
round the year, Mamma Leone serves
a very popular buffet lunch.
Mamma Leone’s pizzas are still famous,
and the restaurant has many classic dishes
with enduring popularity. They are accompanied
by a wide range of options for drinks
as well as an à la carte menu. Every now
and then, the restaurant creates a new hit,
such as the first hot wings in Kalajoki with
the original Siipiveikot sauce served as far
back as 2003.
