1. Welcome
A big welcome to the Ngee Ann-Adelaide Education Centre – a joint venture between The University of Adelaide and Ngee Ann
Kongsi. To help you have an enjoyable time in Singapore and to help you with possible questions that you may have, we have
developed the Ngee Ann-Adelaide Information Handbook. The Handbook provides information about the Ngee Ann-Adelaide
Education Centre, its history, what it stands for, what to expect in the teaching and learning environment, what we expect of you,
and what to expect in Singapore generally.
The Ngee Ann-Adelaide Education Centre is one of five Campuses that the University operates from and that comprise the
teaching and learning network of the University (North Terrace, Roseworthy, Waite, Thebarton, and Ngee Ann-Adelaide). Located in
Singapore but with an Asia-Pacific perspective, the Campus provides an important strategic base for the University as the growing
influence of China and other tiger economies pervade world economic development and world affairs.
Although many students attending classes in Singapore are Singapore-based University of Adelaide students, the University
encourages its students to develop an international perspective. Thus, Australia-based University of Adelaide students may also
enrol in Singapore classes where these students are looking to obtain an Asian cultural experience as well as a quality University
of Adelaide educational experience. (Similarly, we encourage our Singapore enrolled students to travel to Adelaide to experience
an Australian cultural experience while completing their studies; thus, you may find Singapore-based students in Adelaide classes
from time to time.) The ability for University of Adelaide students to enrol in courses on the University’s different campuses (subject
to timetabling and meeting Visa requirements) is one of the distinct advantages that the University can offer its students. It is an
integral component of providing a demonstrative Life Impact experience for its students.
As you would expect, our core aim in Singapore – just as with the University’s other Campus environments – is to provide a world
class teaching and learning experience for the University’s students. Thus, Ngee Ann-Adelaide Education Centre has the same
academic standards as are applicable in Australia.
We strive for the delivery of quality programs and appreciate that we must be relentless in innovating and vigilant in overseeing
quality at all levels. We appreciate that being at the lecturing “coal face”, you may be privy to seeing and hearing things that can
help us in the delivery of our courses. If there are issues or matters that you are aware of that can help us improve the quality of our
service, please let us know.
Thank you for being a valued and integral part of the University’s Ngee Ann-Adelaide Singapore team. We can only function if there
is cooperation and trust between the team in Adelaide and the team in Singapore.
We look forward to working alongside you in growing Ngee Ann-Adelaide Education Centre and establishing our presence as a
pre-eminent Asia-Pacific centre of teaching and research excellence.
2.3 The University of Adelaide
http://www.adelaide.edu.au/about/
http://www.adelaide.edu.au/learning
http://www.adelaide.edu.au/staff/
The University of Adelaide is consistently ranked in the top 1% of universities in the world. It offers a high-quality education
experience that is recognised internationally and that leads to satisfying and rewarding careers. It has produced numerous Nobel
Prize winners and more than 100 Rhodes Scholars. It is a member of the Group of Eight (Go8) that comprises Australia’s top
research-intensive universities.
The University of Adelaide Vision, Mission, and Values
The University’s mission, vision, and values are core to its plan and these are reproduced below.
Vision
The University of Adelaide will build upon its tradition of innovation through high-impact research and excellent teaching
across a broad range of disciplines and professions. It will be a growing, internationally focused and financially
sustainable institution, enterprising in its approach to new opportunities as they arise, and clear and consistent in its
essential directions. It will provide a vibrant intellectual environment that will be satisfying for staff, rewarding for students,
and engaging of the community, engendering a sense of pride in our contribution to contemporary society.
Mission
To be recognised internationally as a great research university and an Australian leader in research and teaching
excellence, committed to the positive impact we can have on the lives of our students, staff and alumni as well as the
local, national and international communities.
Values
1. We will pursue excellence in all that we do.
2. We will act with fairness, integrity and responsibility.
3. We will respect the rights and responsibilities of freedom of inquiry and expression.
4. We will encourage innovation, creativity and breadth of vision.
5. We will be engaged with the local, national and international communities.
6. We are committed to producing graduates recognised worldwide for their creativity, knowledge and skills, as well as
their culture and tolerance. Our graduates make an impact on the world.
Some key points about its history:
• An economic, social and intellectual leader: The University of Adelaide’s importance to South Australia - and beyond
- began in 1874. Founded on the basis of generous donations from Walter Watson Hughes and Thomas Elder, it is
the third-oldest university in Australia and has always been a progressive, outward-looking institution. For well over a
century, its graduates, teachers and researchers have been making outstanding contributions to a number of fields.
These range from science, medicine and engineering, to law, the social sciences and performing arts. It means it has
played a vital role in contributing to the economic, social and intellectual life of the State of South Australia for more than
130 years!
2012 NGEE ANN-ADELAIDE EDUCATION CENTRE ACADEMIC STAFF HANDBOOK
5

6
• Ahead of its time: It is a university ahead of its time. It was a pioneer in the teaching of science, being the first in
Australia to develop a science degree, and in music education with the establishment of the first Conservatorium of
Music, Chair of Music, and Doctorate in Music. Similarly, it has been a leader in the area of gender equality and can
claim to be the first university in Australia, and only the second in the world, to grant degrees to women. Its outstanding
women graduates include the University’s first female graduate, Edith Dornwell (BSc, 1885). It also graduated the first
female surgeon, Laura Fowler (MB, 1891), and the first woman elected to a University Council in Australia, Helen Mayo
(MBBS, 1902). And then there is the distinguished career of Dame Roma Mitchell LLB (1934), Australia’s first woman
judge, Queens Council, University Chancellor, and Governor of an Australian State.
• World-leading research: The University’s reputation for world-leading original research was built by staff members
such as William Bragg, Thorburn Brailsford-Robertson, Douglas Mawson, Hugh Stretton, and J Robin Warren. They
are just a few of the many hundreds who have engaged with the University’s long-standing commitment to excellence in
research, learning, and teaching.
• Graduates with impact: Its graduates include prominent individuals who have made significant contributions to their
fields nationally and internationally and include Howard Florey, Lawrence Bragg, Marcus Oliphant, and Hugh Cairns.
• Building history: The University’s built history can be witnessed across its Australian campuses at North Terrace, Waite,
Roseworthy, and Thebarton which are home to some of the city’s finest buildings and architecture. These include the
Mitchell Building, Bonython and Elder Halls, located along Adelaide’s cultural thoroughfare North Terrace, and Urrbrae
House. And across these campuses continues a tradition of community engagement and vibrant intellectual and social
life that can again be traced back to our origins. In Singapore, the University operates out of the historic Teochew
Building.
Since its establishment in 1874, the University of Adelaide has been amongst Australia’s leading universities. Its contribution to the
wealth and wellbeing of South Australia and Australia as a whole - across all fields of endeavour - has been enormous.
Studying at the University of Adelaide means being part of a rich tradition of excellence in education and research, with world-class
academic staff and a vibrant student life.
Adelaide has a fine tradition of exemplary scholarship and ground-breaking research, and its unique relationship with industry and
other organisations ensures that our research expertise is translated into tangible benefits for the global community.
Adelaide’s research is at the leading edge of knowledge, with research earnings consistently the highest per capita of any university
in Australia. Analysis of the impact of publications and citations shows that the University of Adelaide is ranked in the top 1% in the
world in 11 research fields.
As an innovative and forward-looking University, it has major strengths in wine and food, health sciences, biological sciences,
physical sciences, information technology and telecommunications, environmental sciences, and social sciences.
2.4 About The Ngee Ann Kongsi
Teochew Building
Established by a group of prominent Teochew family members from the Ngee Ann county in Canton (Guangdong) under Mr Seah
Eu Chin, the Kongsi (which means “Company”) initially looked after Teochew immigrants’ religious needs as well as funeral rites.
But as the Teochew community grew and flourished, it started focusing on the needs of the young, especially in education. In
keeping with the enterprising spirit of the Teochews, the Kongsi has since grown into one of the leading foundations in Singapore,
reaching out to the community without regard to race, language, religion, or social status.
The financial returns from its flagship building, the prestigious shopping complex and office tower Ngee Ann City, enable the Kongsi
to continue to contribute to society.
The Ngee Ann Kongsi’s engagement with larger community continues in the following forms:
4. Council for Private Education
12
http://www.cpe.gov.sg
In alignment with the Singapore Private Education Act 2009, a Council for Private Education (CPE) was established in Singapore
to regulate the private education sector. All Private Education Institutes (PEIs) are required to comply with the regulations under the
new Act in order to operate.
NAA is registered as a Private Education Institution under the provisions and regulations of the Private Education Act 2009 in
Singapore. The registration period is valid for 4 years from 14 September 2010 to 13 September 2014.
Registration number: 199703922R.
All teaching faculties assigned to teach at NAA are required to submit their academic and professional qualifications for approval
prior to their teaching assignments. For further information, please contact the Academic Director.
5. Teaching and Program Quality
Students enrolled in NAA are awarded equivalent degrees to onshore programs. Hence pertinent University academic policies and
procedures apply to all students in Singapore. Academic policies and procedures relevant to NAA are Teaching Excellence and
Program Quality Assurance.
Appendix 1: Resources to Support Teaching and Program Quality provides a range of resources that are designed to support
teaching and program quality. Appendix 2: Relevant University Sites provides a series of University’s URLs that may be useful
for lecturers.
5.1 Teaching Excellence
NAA desires teaching excellence in the academic team that lecture on Adelaide’s programs at NAA. Student Experience of
Learning and Teaching (SELT) surveys are administered at the end of each course during the last intensive (refer http://www.
adelaide.edu.au/policies/101/). This is a mandatory requirement stipulated by the Council for Private Education.
The SELT survey for your respective course will be conducted during the last intensive of your course. The schedule of the SELT
survey will be indicated in the Welcome Note in the Lecturer’s Kit. Lecturers are required to strictly adhere to the schedule. The
Student Service Administrator/ Executive will be assigned to conduct the surveys. Lecturers are required to leave the room during
the survey which will take an approximate duration of 15 mins. Lecturers are strictly prohibited from interfering with the SELT survey
process nor influence the students through any form of communications.
In line with the University policy, there are minimum University standards expected to be achieved for lecturer SELT results (refer to
http://www.adelaide.edu.au/sp/selt/expectnstnds.html). Key information to note:
Expectation Standards
As part of the University’s desire to improve the student’s learning experience, it has identified key questions from the Standard
Teacher, Course and Program SELT survey which will be used as indicators of quality.
For each of these questions a high level of broad agreement is expected as indicated on the next page. The minimum level of
broad agreement required by our staff, courses and programs increases each year to 2012.
Reports indicating the level of achievement of teachers, courses and programs in meeting the expectation standards will be
provided to Heads of School and Executive Deans. The SELT Expectation Standards can be downloaded from http://www.
adelaide.edu.au/sp/selt/download/SELT_Expectation_Standards.pdf
5.2 Program Quality Assurance for Adelaide Programs offered at NAA
Programs offered at NAA are subjected to quality review as part of the cyclical review process undertaken by the Quality and
Reviews Unit of the University of Adelaide. The Quality and Reviews Unit operates within the Division of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor
and Vice-President (Academic) and facilitates and contributes to a systematic and structured approach to quality assurance
processes and quality enhancement at the University of Adelaide. The Quality and Reviews Unit contributes to the achievement of
the University’s commitment to have a robust system for quality assurance by:
• Conducting program and academic unit reviews;
• Providing support to university-wide quality assurance related committees;
• Managing and providing administrative support to the University’s quality assurance related frameworks;
• Coordinating and contributing to quality assurance and quality enhancement activities, both internal and external to the
University; and
• Providing advice and information to support quality assurance and quality enhancement within the University.
The Quality and Reviews Unit provides a focus for continuing quality enhancement activities and processes with the University.
6. Program and Course Administration
This section addresses the administrative policies and procedures relevant to teaching at NAA.
6.1 Recommeded Textbooks for Courses
Please submit to the NAA Program Administrators or UoA Offshore Coordinator your recommended textbook titles at least four
months prior to the commencement of your course. Please note that NAA still has a category of students who are entitled to free
textbooks. Hence, we encourage recommendations of only one textbook as compulsory and other titles as optional. Please refer to
pg 3 for the contact.
6.2 Course Workbook
Please email to the respective Program Administrators (please refer to pg 3 for the contact) / UoA Offshore Coordinator your
Course Workbook for printing at least four weeks prior to the commencement of your course. Before doing so, please ensure that
your Course Profile complies with the University’s policy in terms of content and format. If in doubt, please check with the relevant
personnel in your School, namely the Program Director or School Coordinator.
6.3 Articulation Agreements
Program Directors for the respective programs are responsible to ensure that articulation agreements relevant to the programs are
current. A review of the relevant diploma courses for which the University is providing advanced standing should occur annually and
in adequate time for the following year’s program marketing materials to be developed.
6.4 Specialised Hardware/Software/Equipment
Please contact the NAA Program Management staff for any specific hardware/software/equipment you need during lectures at least
12 weeks prior to the course commencement. This relates to items that you require in addition to the “standard” hardware/soft-
ware/equipments provided in the classroom (such as computer, projector, and whiteboard).
Please refer to pg 3 for the contacts of the respective Program Management staff.
6.5 Classroom Setup Arrangement
For specific seating arrangements in a classroom, please contact the relevant NAA Program Administrators at least 4 weeks prior to
the commencement of your course.
6.6 Lecturer’s Kit
Lecturers are encouraged to visit NAA in the morning on the same day of teaching to collect the Lecturer’s Kit from the General
Office and to test the Audio and Visual equipments.
The Kit includes a Lecturer’s Welcome Note, whiteboard markers, Class Attendance list, key to the classroom, student name tags,
Lecturer Feedback form, and IT & Audio Visual Facilities Rectification Service Request form, and Examination Instruction form.
Lecturers are encouraged to use the relevant form(s) if they have suggestions about improving their teaching and/or student
learning experience.
14
2012 NGEE ANN-ADELAIDE EDUCATION CENTRE ACADEMIC STAFF HANDBOOK

6.7 Computer and/or Projector
All classrooms are equipped with a desktop computer and projector. Wireless network is also available.
For technical problems with the desktop computer and/or projector (or any other equipments) in the classrooms or lecturer’s rooms,
please notify the NAA Student Service Centre for urgent attention or alternatively submit the IT & Audio Visual Facilities Rectification
Service Request form. Please refer to Appendix 3 for a sample of the form. The form is also available at www.NAA.edu.sg.
6.8 Student Attendance Records
A copy of the Class Attendance list will be provided in the Lecturer Kit. The CPE stipulates the requirements for regimental recording
of a student attendance and absenteeism on a daily basis. All NAA students are required to attain a minimum of 80% of attendance
per course. Eg. 80% of 30 teaching hours of 1st and 2nd intensives is 24 hours of attendance.
Lecturers are required to ensure that the Class Attendance list is completed with lecturer’s signatory at the end of each teaching
day.
It is recommended that after the first “rest break” each day, students’ attendance on the Class Attendance list is crossed out and
latecomers or absentees are marked appropriately.
Lecturers may receive request from students for approval to be absent from class and it is important that the lecturer should inform
the Program Management staff, as there may be administrative and course fee charges to be incurred. The CPE also requires a
submission of official documents, eg. medical certificates, employer’s letter, air ticket etc for validation of reason for absence.
6.9 Examination Instructions
If there is a scheduled examination for a course, lecturers should submit specific examination instructions by completing the
Examination Instruction form in the Lecturer Kit. Please refer to Appendix 5 for a sample copy. Please submit the form at the end of
the last intensive to the Student Service Centre.
Lecturers are required to be available to receive calls from NAA during the examination duration for pertinent queries with regards
to the examination papers by student or invigilators. Queries will be communicated via the NAA Chief Examination Invigilator. It is
advisable that lecturers should have a copy of the examination paper on hand during the examination duration.
Examination question papers should only be submitted to the NAA Chief Examination Invigilator (dorisng@NAA.edu.sg) at least
2 weeks prior to the examination date. It is important that the examination paper has been checked thoroughly for any errors,
omissions, and/or discrepancies before mailing it out to the NAA office and attention to Doris Ng.
To ensure the accountability of examination scripts received by the lecturers for marking, lecturers may verify the correct number of
scripts to tally with the Attendance Slips collected for the exam.
6.10 Changes to Assessment Deadlines
Please inform the NAA Program Management staff if there are changes to the submission deadlines for any item of assessment in
your course (for example, extensions granted to a student); and/or if you require any additional student consultation sessions to be
held to discuss any items of assessment. Please also inform the NAA Program Management staff if you wish for any assignments to
be submitted in hardcopy.
2012 NGEE ANN-ADELAIDE EDUCATION CENTRE ACADEMIC STAFF HANDBOOK
15

6.11 Feedback to Students on Grades and Queries
In terms of student assessment and feedback:
16
• Please provide students with feedback within two weeks of the assessment submission deadline. This should include
both the marks you awarded together with comments that support the marks you have allocated. The timely submission
of marks and feedback comments are essential for guiding improvements in a student’s future assessment items.
• All students have access to MyUni and are expected to use this. Therefore, please manage your course through MyUni
including, where applicable, using the Discussion Forum or via Announcements. Please ensure that the MyUni Grade
Book is kept up to date, as students will be accessing this to track their results. Please avoid posting the results via
email or on lists that are based on student numbers. Student ID numbers lack confidentiality and privacy laws
need to be observed. MyUni provides the mechanism by which you can abide by these requirements.
• Please ensure you respond to student queries in a timely manner. Given the geographical distance between students
and most lecturers, email (or Skype) provides the best way to do this.
7. Adelaide University Alumni Association Singapore
Formation of AUAAS
The AUAAS started as the University of Adelaide Alumni Singapore – a Network of the Australian Alumni Singapore (AAS) in
1995. With the establishment of the NAA and the consequent growth in alumni population, our patron – the late past President of
Singapore, the Honourable Mr Ong Teng Cheong – encouraged the Network to set up a distinct body to meet the diverse interests
of the alumni.
A Protem Committee led by Network President, Mr Michael Khor, PBM, JP was set-up and the AUAAS was officially launched on
6 April 2002 at the NAA.
Membership
Membership is free and the NAA will contribute S$10 towards the Adelaide University Alumni Association Singapore (AUAAS) Fund
for every new AUAAS member.
As a member of the Adelaide University Alumni Association (Singapore), you will be able to participate in our activities and link up
with an invaluable network of alumni. To register your interest, please email your contact details to auaas@NAA.edu.sg.
Please encourage the students to join the Alumni either as an Associate Member or Ordinary Member upon graduation.
10. About Singapore
Source: YourSingapore website - http://www.yoursingapore.com/content/traveller/en/experience.html
Singapore is a bustling cosmopolitan city populated with high-rise buildings and landscape gardens. Brimming with a harmonious
blend of culture, cuisine, arts and architecture, Singapore is a dynamic city that’s rich in contrast and colour. In fact, you can even
say that Singapore embodies the finest of both East and West.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Singapore is the truly cosmopolitan nature of her population, a natural result of the country’s
geographical position and commercial success. Established by Thomas Stamford Raffles as a trading post on 29 January 1819,
the small sea town of Singapore soon attracted migrants and merchants from China, the Indian sub-continent, Indonesia, the Malay
Peninsula and the Middle East.
Located in Southeast Asia, Singapore has a land area of about 710 square kilometres, making her one of the smallest countries in
the world and the smallest in the region – hence the moniker “The Little Red Dot”. Although small in size, Singapore commands an
enormous presence in the world today with its free trade economy and highly efficient workforce. Also, her strategic location in the
region has enabled her to become a central sea port along major shipping routes.
Other than having a sound business infrastructure and favourable economic climate, another factor for Singapore’s rapid growth is
due to a stable and competent ruling government.
At present, Singapore’s population stands at about five million people, with English as the main language of instruction, and a
mother tongue for each major ethnicity. One of the distinctly Singaporean things you’ll notice on our island is a ubiquitous collage
of cultures. Coming together as a society and living in harmony, there are four major races – namely the Chinese (majority), Malay,
Indian and Eurasian. Each community offers a different perspective of life in Singapore in terms of culture, religion, food and
language.
Almost everyone in Singapore speaks more than one language, with many people speaking as many as three or four. Most children
grow up bilingual from infancy, learning other languages as they become older. With the majority of the literate population bilingual,
English and Mandarin are the most commonly used languages in daily life. While English is the main language taught in schools,
children also learn their mother tongues to ensure that they stay in touch with their traditional roots.
10.1 Currency
The currency used in Singapore is the Singapore dollar. Coins come in 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, and $1. Notes come in denominations of
$2, $5, $10, $50, $100, $500, $1000.
10.2 Public Transport
Taxi
Source: http://www.taxisingapore.com/taxi-companies/
All Singapore Taxis are fitted with electronic meters; are all air conditioned; and are all 5-seaters (including the driver) unless
otherwise stated. About 90% of taxis have radio-phones and call booking is done via GPS or digital voice dispatch. Singapore
passengers must wear seat belts at all times under the Singapore law. The total fleet of taxis in Singapore is about 23,000 so a taxi
is never far away.
MRT
The Mass Rapid Transit or MRT is a good way of getting around Singapore. The MRT is a rapid transit system forming the major
component of the railway system in Singapore, spanning the entire country. The MRT network has 141 stations. The SMRT
Corporation and SBS Transit operate the MRT. They also run bus and taxi services, thus facilitating integration of the public rail, bus,
and taxi networks. MRT services operate from around 5:30 am and finish before 1 am. Frequencies typically occur every three to
eight minutes.
10.3 Healthcare in Singapore
Singapore’s healthcare system is of a high quality so if you are ill and need to see a doctor or go to hospital, you are in good hands.
Many Singaporean doctors have trained in Australia, the USA, Canada, and the UK. Pharmaceutical products are available from
pharmacies such as Guardian. Some supermarkets stock a limited range of pharmaceutical products as well.
Please seek information from hotel helpdesk if you require any medical care.
11. Singapore Hotels near NAA
Most of our visiting lecturers from Australia stay at either the Park Hotel or Novotel Hotel in Clarke Quay (a popular tourist
destination) as these two hotels are near NAA and we have negotiated corporate rates at these hotels. Hotel rates vary depending
on peak and non-peak seasons. If you are staying at the Novotel Clarke Quay or the Park Hotel, it will take around 10 mins ton walk
to NAA by crossing over to River Valley Road and walking along Tank Road.
Breakfast and internet services are provided for lecturers at Novotel Clarke Quay and the Park Hotel.
11.2 Novotel Hotel
Clarke Quay is a historical riverside quay in Singapore, located within the Singapore River
Planning Area. The quay is situated upstream from the mouth of the Singapore River and Boat
Quay. Clarke Quay is also the name of a road along the quay, part of which has since been
converted into a pedestrian mall. Clarke Quay was named after Sir Andrew Clarke, Singapore’s
second Governor and Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1873 to 1875. Clarke Quay
was the centre of commerce during the late 19th century. Today, Clarke Quay is still buzzing
with life and activity. The waterfront godowns now play host to a colourful kaleidoscope of
restaurants, wine bars, entertainment spots and retail shops. The bustling market atmosphere
of bygone days comes alive amidst the rows of charming shop houses, pushcarts, and five-
foot-way merchants. Today five blocks of restored warehouses house various restaurants and
nightclubs. There are also moored Chinese junks (tongkangs) that have been refurbished into
floating pubs and restaurants. The Cannery is one of the anchor tenants of the place.
12. Getting from the Singapore Changi Airport to your Hotel
Depending on traffic condition and where you are staying, it takes about 20-30 minutes to get from the Singapore Changi Airport to
the City. The simplest way to get to your hotel when you arrive at the Airport is to get a taxi. The taxis are located near the exit from
where you pick up your bags in the Arrival Hall after you exit the Immigration Counter.
There will be people at the taxi rank who will direct you to a vacant taxi. If you prefer to pay the taxi driver by credit card, you need to
advise the taxi attendant of this and he/she will direct you to an appropriate taxi. Note that not all taxis take credit cards. It will cost
you around SGD$30-SGD$45 to get from the Airport to your hotel depending on traffic and the time of day you are travelling (there
are higher taxi charges when you travel during peak hour).
13. Places to Eat and Shop around NAA
Some of the eateries close to NAA include:
• Liang Court – Located next to the Novotel Hotel. Includes a range of shops, eateries, and the Meidi-Ya
Supermarket. Starbucks, McDonalds, Subway, Kinokuniya bookshop as well as a Money Charger is located next to
the Novotel at the street level. For more information on nearby Money Changers, do log on to: http://search.insing.com/
ts/banking-finance/money-changer?neighbourhoods=Clarke+Quay
• UE Square – Opposite the Park Hotel. Includes a number of shops, eateries, Starbucks and the Cold Storage
supermarket. There is an ATM opposite if you need to withdraw cash.
• Clarke Quay – Range of restaurants, cafes, night clubs, and various shops (near the Novotel Hotel)
• Robertson Quay - Range of restaurants, cafes, night clubs, and various shops (near the Park Hotel)
• Eateries are available at the shophouses at the corner of Mohamed Sultan Road and River View Road – near Tank
Road and UE Square – that provide a range of inexpensive traditional dishes.
Most shops are open until around 10pm and most are open 7 days a week.
Appendix 1 provides a range of items that new and continuing academic staff teaching at NAA may find useful.
www.adelaide.edu.au/clpd/teaching
A1.1 MyUni Support for Staff
www.adelaide.edu.au/myuni
A1.2 Making Teaching Easier
Making Teaching Easier (MTE) is a MyUni-based gateway to self-access learning and teaching resources for all NAA teaching staff.
Log on to http://myuni.adelaide.edu.au/ and select the course “Making Teaching Easier”.
MTE provides instant desk-top access to a range of resources including introductory support for new teaching staff and ongoing
support for experienced staff. The content is sharply focused, generally as one or two-page guides to a teaching query or issue.
MTE focuses on the following seven areas
• Teaching for Learning
• Using Technology in Teaching
• New to Teaching at Adelaide
• Sessional Teaching Program
• Support Student Learning
• Researching Learning and Teaching
• Rewarding Teaching
A1.3 Copyright Induction for Staff
Log on to http://myuni.adelaide.edu.au/ and select the course “Copyright Induction for Staff”.
Copyright is a set of exclusive rights conferred on authors/creators of works or copyright owners to protect their works against un-
authorised use. Copyright protects the expression of ideas in a material form; it does not protect ideas, concepts, styles, techniques
or information. Copyright in Australia is governed by the Copyright Act 1968. International treaties also apply.
Copyrighted materials are consistently being used and created within the University community. In making use of materials, the
University and every member of its community has legislative compliance obligations relating to copyright which pose a high risk if
they are not met. This is reinforced by the University’s Copyright Policy.
The Copyright Induction for Staff course, which is available through MyUni, aims to introduce lecturers to the basics of copyright
legislation as it applies to teaching or research work at the University of Adelaide.
A1.4 Sessional Teaching Program
www.adelaide.edu.au/clpd/sessional/stp/
The sessional teaching modules are a self-access introduction to some basic principles of learning, teaching, assessment and
evaluation. They are designed to help you in the preparation of your teaching programs. They are also a resource to return to while
teaching.
2012 NGEE ANN-ADELAIDE EDUCATION CENTRE ACADEMIC STAFF HANDBOOK

The modules are intended to stimulate your ideas, with a combination of your own personal experience, reflecting on how you
yourself learn, what worked for you as a learner, and what you observe in your students (together with the ideas and experiences of
others as recorded in scholarly writings on higher education).
There are also links to more in-depth discussions of the underlying principles. These are intended to help you work out your own
approaches based on the ideas and experiences of others.
A1.5 Digital Resources Management Centre
www.adelaide.edu.au/library/drmc
The Digital Resources Management Centre (DRMC) provides a centralised service for the processing and copyright management
of all journal articles, book chapters, and other text materials that are required for teaching purposes by staff members of the
University of Adelaide.
A1.6 University Assessment Policies
This section highlights some important policies that lecturers should be aware of. They should be read in conjunction with relevant
University policies listed in Appendix 2.
• Assessment for Coursework Programs Policy
www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/700/
• Examinations Policy
www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/64/
• Unsatisfactory Academic Progress by Coursework Students Policy
www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/1803/
A1.7 Assessment and Examination Procedures and Guidelines
This section provides details about important items that you should be aware of when it comes to assessment items and
examination procedures.
A1.7.1 Grade Descriptors
www.adelaide.edu.au/policies/700/
The generic grade descriptors are to be interpreted within the context of the year-level of the course and within the scope of the
assessment task. Assessment tasks include, but are not limited to, examinations, essays, and assignments.
The descriptors provide a general guide to the standard of work that is expected at each grade level. Schools and disciplines
should develop discipline-specific elaborations of these descriptors and more detailed descriptions of what students are expected
to do to achieve at the various levels. In developing discipline-specific descriptions, schools and departments might find it useful
to refer to taxonomies such as Bloom’s taxonomy or the Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes (SOLO) taxonomy. These two
taxonomies are useful in formulating objectives, planning teaching and learning activities, and devising assessment tasks. The
Teaching and Educational Development Institute of the University of Queensland have produced two leaflets outlining the use of
these taxonomies that you may find useful.
A1.7.2 Coursework Grading Guidelines
www.adelaide.edu.au/sas/grading_guidelines.pdf
1. Hurdle Requirements
A hurdle requirement is an assessment task mandating a minimum level of performance as a condition of passing the course. The
Assessment for Coursework Programs Policy limits the setting of hurdle requirements to the following:
• Not more than 3 assessment tasks with hurdle requirements per course
• No hurdle requirements in assessment tasks weighted at less than 20% of the total assessment.
Exemptions to this requirement can be approved by the relevant Executive Dean on pedagogical grounds. These must be reported
annually to the Assessment Monitoring Committee. The policy requires that students be fully informed of:
• Any hurdle requirements
• How their attainment of the hurdle requirements will be monitored
• How they will be informed if they do not attain the requirements
• Their entitlements under the Special Consideration in Assessment Policy.
As a matter of good practice, the Assessment Monitoring Committee recommends that Hurdle requirements should:
• Be determined on pedagogical grounds
• Be used only where it is necessary to ensure the mastery of core Discipline elements (especially in Disciplines where
there are professional and / or technical applications as is the case for example with placements in the Medical and
Health Sciences)
• Be used to enhance student performance rather than to compel performance
• Be applied sparingly to courses
• Be used to meet minimum competency standards or to demonstrate “fitness to practice” for courses related to
professional practice
• Be designed to match assessment tasks and reflect the weighting of the task in the overall assessment
• Be measurable
•Permit academic replacement assessment opportunities as per the Special Consideration in Assessment Policy.
