My Kaywa QR-Code w.valuecarswarehouse.co.nz Thursday January 20 2022 The Star 25 Ioniq 5 EV a step into the future THE FUTURE is here. Hyundai has launched the Ioniq 5 in New Zealand. If you are thinking from the outset that it is just another electric sport utility vehicle then you have better think again. It is a car that is almost out of this world. Everyone who talked about the Ioniq 5 when it was in my care talked of space age and futuristic – and it is, it looks like something out of Star Trek, it’s a car that I dreamed of as a child, the way I thought cars would look in the 21st–century. It’s not just the way the mattepainted, nature-inspired exterior is styled either, the interior is nothing like I’ve seen before in what would be deemed a mass produced car, the bold, spacious design is highlighted in the evaluation car’s case by light grey leather. What’s more, the Ioniq 5 is the technology champion, it’s engineered with practicality in mind, it has range and it has speed, not withstanding that it is still the practical car we have come to expect from the modern SUV. How Hyundai has rolled all of these aspects into one model to satisfy those who want an electric vehicle kind of amazes me, but it’s here with all those tempting elements that will lure many buyers. The Ioniq 5 arrives in a complicated array of models – six in total. The entry-level car with twowheel-drive and a 58kWh battery pack lists at $79,990. It is the only model in the range that qualifies for the Government’s $8625 clean car discount. The rest of the range carry a 72.6kWh battery pack and arrive in two or four-wheeldrive form. The test car was the range-topping 4WD Limited at $112,990. If you wanted to save $3k you could dispense with the roof-top solar panels and have a vision roof instead. The solar panels are there to help charge the battery pack and power the heating and air conditioning. Hyundai claims a driving range of well over 400km for the Ioniq 5 with the high capacity battery pack, of course there are many factors which govern that, but I drove the evaluation car quite sprightly and it didn’t lower the capacity at any great rate. Therein lies another surprise, the Ioniq 5 has ultra fast charging, you can boost the batteries to 80 per cent from 10 per cent in 18min, if you can hook into an appropriate charge port, a 5min boost will give you 100km of range. The evaluation car came only with a three-pin domestic charge cable and it’s fair to say I was a little bit surprised to see it had an estimated full charge time of 41 RADICAL: The shape of the Ioniq 5 is futuristic. The design cues are carried through to the interior. HYUNDAI IONIQ 5: Fully electric and available in a six-model range starting from $79,990. hours when I plugged it in from empty. But, in effect, an overnight charge will easily take care of that daily commute to the Canterbury townships. I mentioned the Ioniq is fast, in Limited form it will lunge to 100km/h from a standstill in 5.2sec and will fly through a highway overtake in 4sec (80- 120km/h). Hyundai also claim a top speed of 185km/h. The Ioniq 5’s four-wheel-drive system comes through two electric motors – front and rear obviously. In terms of power output the combined total is listed at 225kW, but the most interesting figures are those of combined torque – 605Nm in total – those outputs available instantly and everywhere in the speed band, it is a quick car and one that feels exciting to drive. First, though, you need to familiarise yourself with the controls, there’s a wealth of technology in the car and the layout is like nothing you’ve seen anywhere before. The display graphics dominate the interior and the functions are deep, the system is reasonably intuitive, but you’ll need time to remember the drive lever (gearshift) is on the right hand side of the steering column. Other than that, the Ioniq 5 • Price – Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited, $112,990 • Dimensions – Length, 4635mm; width, 1890mm; height, 1605mm • Configuration – Electric motors, four-wheeldrive, 225kW, 605Nm, automatic • Performance – 0-100km/h, 5.2sec drives much like the feel you get in any EV, although there is strong retardation through motor braking that eases somewhat the pressure you need to put on the brake pedal. There are also individual power preferences through selecting the drive mode that best suits your driving style. I took the Ioniq 5 through to Darfield and return, and drove it vividly; of course, it is stunningly quiet and swift, and covers distance effortlessly. It rides on huge 20in wheels and there’s a lot of rubber on the road, as a consequence there is a lot of steering feed and good loading on the steering wheel. A couple of challenging corners near Burnham were met with dignity and accuracy. The weight of the batteries is contained sandwiched in the floorpan which keeps the centre of gravity low, and even though it is tall (1.6m) the Ioniq 5 doesn’t move over the suspension, body movement is all but negated. A sporty driving sensation is constantly on offer if you are tackling a long open road journey. The Ioniq 5 is also a car that will suit all driving styles and all journeys. You can’t market any car as an SUV unless it meets all criteria, and I’m pleased to report the Ioniq 5 covers the bases in that respect. It also has much kit, column space doesn’t allow for a comprehensive detailing but to say it wants for little in terms of comfort, convenience and safety. The Ioniq 5’s in-your-face design is well matched through its ability. There’s no doubt Hyundai has put research and development into the vehicle. It’s a bold statement, but it also reeks of functionality and will certainly satisfy those who want to be in the electric revolution early. Hyundai is also building on the Ioniq 5 concept, there is a sedan looming and a larger SUV in the manufacturing process.
