Newspaper Rock•Petrified Forest National Park•Created by ancestral Puebloan people based along the
Puerco River between 650 and 2,000 years ago. Some of the ancient artists may have lived at Puerco Pueblo,
located less than one mile north of this site.

The Desert Southwest
Left: Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway brochure promoting tourism to the Desert
Southwest from1937. Accommodation was provided by ‘Fred Harvey’ Hotels built
beside the railway or in tourist centres. Pioneering architect Mary Colter worked with
the Fred Harvey Company from 1902 to 1948; designs included La Posada, Winslow
and buildings in the Grand Canyon National Park. Entrepreneur Allan Affeldt
undertook the restoration of La Posada in 1994, re-opening in 1997.

Rope Bridge•San Juan River•Bluff•Constructed by volunteers in 1957, the bridge allowed Navaho Nation
children to attend school in Bluff and families to access shops and utilities without a considerable detour.
Washed away in floods in 2006, yet to be replaced.
