are lit… And when the wonderful smells of
sugared almonds, hot chestnuts, and fresh
baked apples fill the air; when you can hear
beautiful Christmas music everywhere and
strings of light chains illuminate the streets
and houses – then it is finally time for advent.
For many people it is the most beautiful time
of the year and they love to spend it in Salzburg.
During the pre-Christmas season a stroll
through the beautifully decorated streets of the
old town is a wonderful experience.

The historic Christmas Market on Dom and Residenzplatz
is among the most beautiful Christmas markets in the
world. The market with its unqiue ambiance has been
around since 1974 and even though it is quite small the
festively decorated stalls – from crafts to culinary delights –
make sure no wishes remain unfulfilled. An impressive
extra here is the sound of the best brass players in the
province who, during the traditional tower-brass sessions,
play beautiful tunes off of the bell tower, the Christmas
museum’s terrace, and the Cathedral gallery.
A trip to the scenic Christmas Market in the courtyard of
Hellbrunn castle lawakens childhood memories, it brings
back that feeling of eagerly waiting for Christmas and
sharing in many old customs. More than 700 festively
decorated fir trees, an 8-metre Christmas angel and the
castle’s facade – where 24 of its windows have been turned
into a huge advent calendar – all make for a beautiful advent
experience. Just like on many other Christmas markets,
both, young and old, can do their own baking here: classics
like cinnamon stars, vanilla crescents, “Linzeraugen” (nut
cookies filled with jam), or a delicious fruit loaf. 31
